The Eve of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ 24 December 2024 - 4 p.m. A Festival of Lessons and Carols Some early childhood Christmases in my native Ohio were spent at my aunt's home in Youngstown, where my father was born. His mother, Grandma Mary, was still on this side of heaven and holding forth from the kitchen, bracciole and hot sausages simmering in her pot. What I remember most after the smells, was the travel. An hour's drive in the snow and ice, my dad's hands flying from the wheel as he issued commentary on the evening, me braced between my younger sisters in adjoining car seats, and my mom pregnant with our next sister, calming us with songs of Judy Collins. All of us were draped with blankets, guarding us from the unreliable heat of an aging Volkswagen Rabbit.

Two weeks before the Whites' trip to the Pacific Northwest, Edie receives a message from a close maternal match (estimated first or second cousin) named John Lukas, in Northwest Indiana. Edie knows they are related through his paternal grandmother, Mary, and that most of her numerous descendants remained in the Hoosier State. An exchange of several daily messages yields no clue how one of them made it down to Louisiana by 1970.   As the departure date for Washington State draws closer, so do Edie, Justin, and Rachel. Two days before her flight to SEA-TAC, John Hart emails Edie, "There is a high probability that Debbie/Deborah Abrams is your birth mother." Justin replies that he's never heard their father mention that name before.   Get your signed edition of The Little Girl at the Bottom of the Picture: A Journey of Selfless Discovery at LittleGirlBook.com. Here are the talking points: What was it like 30 years ago to be talking about “green homes”?I imagine things are quite different now compared to back then.  In your observation, what is the biggest progress in the business of green homes and what is still the biggest challenge in your  work? What do you think is the most effective term to use to describe the homes you and I are promoting?  “Green,” “eco,” “healthy,” and/or “high performance.”?What is your advice for me to reach more of the right people who would be more receptive of the idea of “green,” “healthy,” or “high performance” homes?

The very first place we learn about how to treat other people is our family of origin, and I am very fortunate to have a beautiful and loving family. This week on the podcast, we hear from my Grandma Mary. This is my mom’s mom and I have been told that she, my mother, and I have similar sounding voices - what do you think? Grandma Mary was a Depression-era baby, and her parents were Italian immigrants. This means two things: 1. She can make a killer baked macaroni and 2. She knows how to scrimp and save every penny and crumb to make a delicious meal. This week she talked with me about the importance of using fresh, organic ingredients, something she was doing long before it was cool. We talked about her parents, who were from Rivisondoli, a small mountain town in the Abruzzo region (remember what Shari told us about that?). Grandma has fond memories of delicious food, singing Italian songs, and the integral role of the church in her community. We talked through some of her classic recipes, and the joy that sharing a meal with friends and family brings. “A good meal with good friends - it’s almost a sacred thing, really.” Grandma was raised in northeast Ohio in the “Italian Ghetto” as she calls it. She was married at 19, and she had to grow up fast because she went on to have four children. Grandma is an incredibly talented artist, and she is also extremely intuitive when it comes to relationships with people. She is also tough as nails. In thi episode she shared advice about growing one’s own food, cooking meals with simple ingredients (including her delectable meatballs and sauce), and the importance of getting back to the basics of home and family during COVID.

Who:  Andrea Vahl - Speaker, Social Media Strategist and Coach, Author of Facebook Marketing for Dummies, and creator of Grandma Mary What We Talked About:  How to bring more creativity and more of YOU to your business.  Andrea reveals how she took a risk, did something different from everyone else in the Facebook marketing space, and created the character, Grandma Mary.  She explains why it's so important to take a risk and follow your ideas to fruition and she gives practical advice for making that happen. Why I Like Andrea:  As a former improv comic, it won't come as any surprise that Andrea is brave.  Well, she's taken that same courage and creativity and brought it to her business.  She was willing to follow through with the idea of edutainer, Grandma Mary, even when others told her she was crazy or that the idea was “weird.”  Andrea shows what happens when you trust your instincts and follow your inner voice rather than listening to the peanut gallery. Great Line:   What matters is understanding what is fun for you. Where to Learn More:  http://www.andreavahl.com http://www.themindawareshow.com
