This episode is for you - dear parent - and it's about sugar. and our kids. And Halloween. And all. that. Halloween. candy! But really, the tips Ciara Spencer gives in this episode are ones we can work on the rest of our parent lives. The way we behave around fun foods, treats, sugar, and more is likely how our children will be as adults. Connect with Ciara, HERE Connect with Leyla (host), HERE The concept of being neutral about candy and sugar and not putting it on a pedestal is so smart. And to me, beats micromanaging. Raising intuitive eaters is my mission. I want nothing more than my kids to have a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. I'm passionate about getting as much information out about this topic as I can, which is why I brought Ciara on the podcast to talk about Halloween candy! Letting your kids trust their own hunger cues and their bodies. I think you'll really enjoy what Ciara has to say. If you like it, or don't, please feel free to let me know or leave a review!

#38: The podcast is back!!:) I am so happy. It's been one year, to the day. This episode is for YOU, you're going to feel very motivated to take action on your project or goal today. Let me tell you about our guest, Cam Palu. Cam is one half of the dynamic duo known as Camiah. She's a fun haver, email coder, coffee drinker, video creator, artist, drawing maker, wannabe chef, kid wrangler, and wishful comedian. She's also my friend who I met when I worked at a digital marketing agency in Denver. She's very good at helping people START the things they have been wanting to start. She volunteered to be my first guest for the reboot of my podcast after the maternity break. Cam was a guest for episode 6 of the show (back when it was still called Present Not Perfect). That episode was titled "How To Be Creative Everyday. Why Just Starting Eliminates Fear" Cam is so wise and motivating. This episode is all about STARTING and DOING. She has some really great insights on why you can't over think it and why you must just start today. You will always adjust and get better. But starting NOW, is what it's all about. Cam is out to make the world a kinder, more inclusive space. Like, how amazing is that? But you know what the best part is? She is actually living this every day in how she shows up in the world and how she raises her two boys. She is teaching her two kids how to make others feel seen. I almost teared up at this part. She said, many people don't ever feel seen in their day to day life. So whether it's saying hi to someone one the street, or going up to a kid in class because you can just tell that he has a tough home life. We talk about this in the episode too. Please hit me up on Instagram. I would love to know what you think! Or what project you're starting. Let me know how I can help. Hey there! It’s Leyla. I wanted to give an update on the podcast. As I’m recording this I am 39 weeks pregnant and about to pop literally any day now… I am so excited to welcome my second baby girl into the world. Check out my Instagram @LeylaSarper I am sure it will be filled with baby pics and story updates. The plan for the podcast is to take a break while I’m on maternity leave so I can fully be present with the new baby and my family and try not to be a sleep-deprived zombie. But I’ll be back! I’m guessing starting back up Dec 1st, but who knows, maybe I’ll just wait till the new year. I’m just playing it by ear. It could be sooner too! I’m not going to put any hard deadlines on myself. Thank you for supporting the podcast with your time. It means the world to me that you’ve listened to one episode, or a few, or more! I know, you’re devastated there won’t be any new episodes to listen to, so I will recommend my favorite podcast, The Skinny Confidential, The GaryVee Audio Experience, and The Motherly Podcast. All solid choices. 2020 has been...challenging. But has also been a blessing in disguise for many of us as we’ve had to take a good hard look at what we want to do in life. Now is the time to take action. Take messy action. Do not fall into the perfection trap. Just move forward. And don’t care what people say. They will try to talk you out of it potentially or give their reasons why you won’t be good at that thing. Don’t listen. You know what’s the truth because you’ll feel it in your gut. Listen to your intuition. Don’t have regret. Just try and remember there’s really no such thing as failing. Just learning! I love you and I know you can do it. See you over on Instagram :) Love, Leyla

Kristin Darga is the Founder of Impact Founder™, a keynote speaker, award-winning author, performance, and executive coach. She has worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs, many teams in companies, and as a four-time founder, she understands the highly satisfying yet distressing road of entrepreneurship. In this episode, we talk about pivoting your business and life during the pandemic and what that can look like, how Kristin has dealt with the many changes & setbacks that happened as a result of our current situation, how life has never been certain, like ever. Today, we are hearing over and over again how we’re living in “uncertain times.” Among the gems you’re about to hear, one of them is about not missing the hustle and how things used to be. #29: In this episode, I talk with my dear friend Kelsey Harbert. Kelsey is a neuroscience student at the University of Colorado. Kelsey is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things neuroscience, the study of the brain and its impact on behavior and cognitive functions. What we discussed for the podcast is how to be a better listener! Something literally everyone could improve on if we’re being honest. I know I need a lot of help in this area. And I feel that those around me do too. What about you? Kelsey will explain the practice of Reflective Listening and how it can really help improve your listening skills and relationship with your partner, or anyone else for that matter. Kelsey has been practicing this with her partner for a while now and she can attest to how much it’s made a difference in her life. Especially now, during quarantine and social distancing, where we are spending so much more time at home, it’s important to improve our communication skills. Listening is a major part of communication, but it’s something we’ve never really been formally taught how to do effectively. Plus, add smartphones and streaming tv, it can feel like even when we are speaking to someone, the person on the other end might be glancing around, totally distracted. I dunno about you, but it feels awful when it’s being done to me. And then, I must admit, I do this to others! Here is what you can expect: What Reflective Listening is. The overall goal is to create an environment that’s a safe space for you and your family - where you don’t feel alone - and heard and listened to. The different ways to categorize it: 1) For you and your partner 2) For you, yourself The signs that you’re not listening to others The signs that you’re not listening to yourself Which responses should we avoid when listening to someone? Not problem solving, pity, saying something like, “that’s crazy that’s happening to you” because these actually make people feel alone. You just want to be heard - people just want to be heard and listened to. To connect with Kelsey: www.instagram.com/askelseydoes/ To connect with Leyla: www.instagram.com/leylasarper/ Thank you for checking this episode out! #25: Mary MacCarthy, is a Los Angeles-based independent journalist who worked as an international television reporter and anchor for 15 years, for networks including PBS NewsHour, Rocky Mountain PBS, France 24, and many others. She's also a single mother to a 9-year-old diva. During this moment we are all living through, Mary is a journalist looking at how people are getting by during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mary has been following the COVID-19 pandemic very closely and was very much ahead of the curve when it comes to knowing what was going to happen in the United States. She is the most educated person I have spoken to personally about what’s happening. I have seen so much misinformation online. In this episode, I was able to ask Mary some questions that I’ve been really grappling with regarding the coronavirus, our response to it, and what we should do next. Obviously, neither one of us are medical experts or scientists, so please visit CDC.gov for the latest. We are simply concerned citizens, moms, humans of this planet who want to weed out some of the bullshit and misinformation going around and figure out what we can do moving forward. I hope and your family are doing okay as you’re listening to this. It’s gonna take time, but we will get through this. How Mary was tracking COVID-19 before most of us knew it existed How to (or sadly not) get tested The mixed messaging on masks - yes, wear masks or face coverings people. Why Americans have trouble respecting the stay at home order Some of the trends I see on Facebook about what people are saying (including herd immunity, just quarantining the elderly, and people downplaying this) Answering some questions we got on Instagram including prophecies and aliens!? Will life as we knew it before COVID-19 go back to how it was before? Homeschooling and being with your kid 24/7 Some of the positives that have come from this! How this is such a patriotic moment for Americans to come together, do their duty, and help each other out as best we can. #24: Bennie Fowler Thank you for being here! Most likely you’re listening to this one from home. This is an unprecedented time we are going through with the coronavirus pandemic. And I hope you are doing okay. It’s impacting our everyday lives, local communities, and world. At the time of this recording on March 23rd, most of us are self quarantining and practicing social distancing or some of us are even mandated to by state order to stay home. I recorded this episode with Bennie on May 19th. Here’s some background info on Bennie Fowler. He is a six-year veteran of the NFL. He spent four years with the Broncos and was a member of the Super Bowl 50 championship team in 2016. And also his thoughts on being present, the power of mindset, and as difficult as it may be to be bunkering down right now, this is also such an opportunity for us to do some of that difficult inner work, create healthy habits, and set goals. Topics we cover in this episode: Coronavirus & how it’s is affecting daily life Tips on how to stay on track during the quarantine Bennie’s best selling book Silver Spoon: The Imperfect Guide to Success Catching Peyton Manning’s last pass and his experience working with him Mindfulness Goal Setting Importance of Routines Mindset & Mental Toughness Bennie shares stories and advice that will help you overcome what's holding you back. He also gives great tips on how to practice mindfulness. Something we could all use in these crazy and uncertain times we are experiencing. I hope you can take away some inspiration for whatever you’re up to, or just some practices you can employ to get through each day. Love you & we’re all gonna get through this and be okay :) Leyla

#22: In this one, I sit down with Julie Pero. She's an amazing mama and blogger in Denver, CO. This episode is mainly for parents or parents to be! Julie Pero is a mom and the writer of the personal blog, Mommy’s Magic. I met her at a coworking event and loved what she had to say about intuitive parenting and she gave me some advice for a friend who was struggling with being a new mom and not having a strong support system. She started Mommy’s Magic as a reaction to her own journey through motherhood; seeking answers to the unknown and learning how to trust her instincts above all other logic. Without family readily nearby to help, she’s had to find her own way, make mistakes, and learn to trust her gut feelings & intuition. Julie is creating a community of mothers to share stories, wins & losses & lessons learned. I think you’ll enjoy Julie’s wisdom around trusting your gut and taking everyone’s advice with a grain of salt. #21: In this episode, Leyla sits down with Video Marketing Expert, Mike Kilcoyne and talks about all things around this topic like why it’s so important for your business or personal brand, why you’re probably afraid to start, why people tend to give up too easily. #18: In this episode, I chat with Heather Sager about public speaking, how to be a better communicator in day to day life, and how battling invisible illnesses has affected each of us (Heather's story is so inspiring!) The topic of public speaking really freaks us all out to some degree but what if we stop and think about our message, our why, and our intention. It would really help us get present and realize it’s not about us, it’s about the person or people we’re speaking to and how we can help them. This episode is packed with so many tips on how we can be more effective communicators in our everyday life all the way to being on a stage. Heather Sager is a speaking coach and communication expert. She helps people structure their ideas, clarify their message and hone their speaking skills so they can deliver magnetic live presentations, videos, and workshops that grow their authority. Bonus Episode #1: Hey you! On a whim, the day before Christmas Eve 2019, I decided to record my first solo episode in the Target parking lot. This is the full story of how I started my podcast and what occurred just before that was the catalyst to me starting when I did. The reason I want to share this story is simply to show you what was going in my head, my worries, fears, hesitations about starting my podcast because I know many of you are going through the same thing. You have a thing that you want to do, or start, or try, but for some reason or another, you're waiting, you're planning, and overthinking to put it simply. You gotta just START. No more waiting. It doesn't need to be perfect to start. You can improve and learn and adjust as you go. But you gotta start. like... now. In addition to my story, the second half is some of my favorite quotes or sayings that go with this theme of STARTING and TRYING. I'm so excited for you to embark on your journey and I hope this short episode will bring some motivation for you. Happy HAPPY 2020. I can't belive it's 2020. Let's make this the year we START. The. THING! Love you, XO Leyla
#16: Hey you! You're going to get a lot of value from this episode. This topic literally does apply to every person. It’s about this thing we’ve been chasing to no avail - it’s called work-life balance. And what a breath of fresh air it was to speak to someone who’s life work is to help educate us that work-life balance is a myth, it’s unattainable. Instead, Dana is teaching people that we can consciously choose where we spend our time and energy, and which facets of life we choose to settle. I love that she’s taking the term “settling” and giving it a positive connotation. It was amazing to be able to speak to Dana and get some clarity on what she means by all of this. Here’s a quick bio on her before we jump into the episode… Dana Look-Arimoto is an executive and leadership coach, mentor, inventor of Stop Settling®, and the author of Stop Settling, Settle Smart: Rethinking Work-life Balance, Redesign Your Busy Life. #10: Have you ever felt like you’ve traded in brain cells for your baby? 'Mom Brain' is something I’ve heard thrown around on the regular and I say it myself constantly when I have a lapse in my memory or do something silly. When I did further research into it, however, I realized there isn’t that much information on the topic readily available in easy to digest formats like youtube videos or podcasts. I was so happy to sit down with Dr. Mehlenbacher to try to understand what’s going on with our brains during and after pregnancy. Spoiler alert: lack of sleep is a HUGE part of it. But it is much deeper than that too. It was fascinating to learn about this. Here’s a bit more about our guest: Dr. Karla Mehlenbacher is a Board-Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, holistic autoimmune practitioner and founder of Take Root Brain & Body.
