Hold on to your ba-ZOOM-bas, ladies and gentlemen, it's time for Part 5 of The Collectors, a limited series in which The Horror Avengers reveal their deepest, darkest secret love affairs with their various collections — especially their personal movie collections! In this fifth installment, Count Mackula interviews The Southern Gentleman, GregaMortis — the Head “Creepture” of Land of the Creeps. In an intimate and wide-ranging interview, Mackula chats with GregaMortis to journey through the decades of his collecting passion, starting with his childhood days of toyline preferences and fondly remembered visits to the legendary Kmart in Elkins, West Virginia. Greg shares stories of his earliest collecting obsessions, providing a glimpse into the roots of a lifelong pursuit that would be both challenged and reborn. Listeners will hear the dramatic and heartfelt account of Greg's personal “Burning” — a pivotal event in the mid-1990s when, under pressure from his former religious community, he was compelled to destroy much of his cherished media collection. But like any great collector with a resilient spirit, GregaMortis rose from those ashes, beginning around 2001, to rebuild a vault of cinema and memorabilia that now spans VHS tapes, laser discs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and modern 4Ks! Victory! GregaMortis has been keeping Horror alive ever since! You also get to hear about Greg's enthusiasm for collecting vintage TV Guides from the 1970s and '80s. He explains his philosophy on upgrading films across evolving formats — and what he gains (or loses) in the process. And of course, no collection is without its tragedies. Greg recounts “The Great Fall” — the unfortunate toppling of his homemade movie shelves. Episode 151 offers more than just a peek into a movie-lover's media treasures; it's a tribute to the emotional ties we form with the things we love, the resilience it takes to reclaim joy, and the communal bond that collectors like Greg and Mack share across generations with listeners like you! Don't miss this badass edition of “The Collectors Series” with the unforgettable GregaMortis! Listen, you'll love it! Also, in case you missed them, here are the first three installments of this series: Ep. 088: The Collectors – Part 1 and Ep. 094: The Collectors – Part 2 and Ep. 098: The Collectors – Part 3 and Ep. 102: The Collectors – Part 4. CD 1730 With a Great Ending and not a Great FallBro Jason: *2 Thessalonians 2:3:"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;*Revelation 1:8: "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty."The Bible, especially in the King James Version (KJV), provides several examples and warnings about individuals and even nations that started with promise but ultimately strayed and faced negative consequences. These narratives highlight the importance of perseverance in faith and obedience. Here are some KJV scriptures and biblical examples that illustrate the theme of starting well but not ending well:General Principles: * Ecclesiastes 7:8: "Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit." (While not directly about a bad ending, it emphasizes the importance of the outcome over the initial state.) * Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." (Often, a good beginning is ruined by pride or a change in heart.) * Galatians 5:7: "Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" (This speaks to those who once followed the right path but were diverted.) * Luke 9:62: "And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." (This emphasizes the need for continuous dedication and not turning back once committed.)Support the show
This week's lightning round, sponsored by the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Simbe, Mirakl, Ocampo Capital, Infios, and ClearDemand, is packed with laughs and unexpected questions. Chris and Anne start by debating what the official Omni Talk uniform would be, inspired by Starbucks' new black-on-green dress code (0:01). Then they reminisce about epic faceplants, including Anne's “Great Fall of Lisbon” (1:17), and react to Jewel suing Kroger over her removal from the Wellness Festival (2:09). Chris unveils his Chris-apalooza music lineup—Elvis, the Beatles, and the Jackson 5 (2:37)—while Anne keeps things grounded with crosswalk tech that talks like Lil Jon (3:25). It's retail banter with a side of absurd. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Shelby Saville, author of the book And They Had a Great Fall. Shelby resides in a suburb west of Chicago. Despite her city living, she's a small-town girl at heart. She grew up in a town of 2000 people where she spent her teenage years at her typewriter late into the night. Her stories brought her to a world beyond the 1.6 square mile radius of her town. Her first writing job was for the Lacon Home Journal, where she covered the news of the town. She particularly loved writing obituaries, taking great care to convey the life of someone's friend … sibling … lover…. But still the city was calling. She moved to Chicago when she got her dream job in the advertising industry. Throughout her career she realized she had an interest in digital media. She's spent the last 25 years at Publicis Media where she's focused on media investment – quite simply – how advertising space is bought and sold. Most surprisingly, she found her career in numbers, not words. She's returned to the world of words with her debut novel, And They Had A Great Fall. It's a second chance love story, set in a foreign city with a dash of a celebrity secret romance. Writing this novel has felt like coming home as the two sides of her brain merge. When not at her computer, she can be found hanging with her husband, Scott, teenage daughter, three dogs and one mean cat. In my book review, I stated And They Had a Great Fall is a wonderful romance that had me in all of my emotions. For me, it was particularly poignant since we learn early on that Kat lost her husband to cancer five years earlier - and she is having a heck of a time moving forward. Although she is much younger than me, has a young child at home, and was in the midst of an important corporate career, I still felt a kinship. Kat's love interest, Jake, is someone well outside her norm. Everything about his life is what she claims to abhor - messy, emotional, spontaneous, and all-in. Jake sees that she offers a stability and sense of purpose he craves. But what happens when two broken people find one another and try to fix the other without first fixing themselves? I laughed. I cried. I raged. I cheered. But most importantly, I connected. This book should be on your TBR. Nick LiBassi had a great childhood growing up in Bergen County, New Jersey. He enjoyed playing many different sports and being outside with his family and friends. Remember, there were no cell phones to monopolize our time back in the day after all. Having watched and learned a great deal from his grandfather and uncle, who were carpenters, he knew early on that a life in construction and carpentry was in the cards. That is until life dealt him another hand. Nick is my guest this week, and his story is unlike any I've had the pleasure of highlighting. "From a great fall to the highest of heights", is an episode you will not want to miss!
(1) A Good Creation; (2) A Great Fall; (3) A Gracious Restoration.
-1- A Good Creation- -2- A Great Fall- -3- A Gracious Restoration.
The nation of Israel had never been so spiritually alive. God kept every promise to David, and the nation flourished. The nation was politically stable, unbelievably wealthy and militarily powerful, and at the peak of this unprecedented prosperity, David was on the precipice of spiritual disaster. How could this be? How could he have resisted so many temptations in dangerous, difficult days, and then yield at the height of success? The greatest enemy of our souls is the selfish pride at the core of our fallen natures. If we look deep enough, this is what we will find feeding the strong sinful cravings of our appetites, and this is why prosperity can be so spiritually dangerous. Adversity keeps us humbly desperate for God, but seasons of success can be our most perilous because we are so easily deceived into thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think. I pray this weekend you would join us as we learn to walk in humble desperation for God so that we might glorify Him in every season. — Pastor Chad
Back on the show is friend Jim Dussias. Jim has had a great fall season since our hog hunt in Georgia. He's shot two deer and a hog, each with different types of weapons. He's in a relatively target-rich environment, so he's been able to be picky and enjoy just being able to watch deer. We talk about his three hunts, what he's working on and what adventures are coming up. It's great to talk to him and I'm looking forward to hunting hogs with him again in March! Being a muralist is risky. From balancing on high-rise scaffolding to navigating busy public spaces, beautifying building facades comes with its own set of liabilities. There's an art to recognizing potential hazards and putting necessary precautions in place, but unfortunately, accidents are bound to happen. On today's podcast episode, Scott “Sourdough” Power sits down with muralist Amandalynn to discuss the artist's unexpected fall from a scaffold earlier this year. Based in North Carolina, Amandalynn is a conservator and art director whose large-scale murals steep cities in lush botanicals and feminine magic, providing a brief escape from crude, masculine architecture and urban anxiety. In March 2023, Amandalynn plummeted from the security of her painting scaffold while working on a client's ceiling. “The first thing I thought when I opened my eyes was, ‘Why is there paint all over [my client's] books?'” she tells Scott. “I wasn't comprehending why I was looking at books. Then I tried to move and realized that something was really wrong.”The fall shattered Amandalynn's ribs and pelvis. After a trip to the ICU, the muralist returned home, supported by friends, patrons, and a “circle of witches” who cared for Amandalynn during her recovery. “It was incredibly humbling to see everyone come together and donate to me,” she says. “People are still trying to give me money!”Sometimes bad things happen to good artists, but Amandalynn proves there's light at the end of a dark tunnel. In this episode, she shares the story of her terrible tumble, how it could have been prevented, and the challenges she faced during recovery. Tune into today's special episode of Art World Horror Stories to hear how Amandalynn turned her trauma into a learning experience. “It has been pretty beautiful in the last year since I started back up again,” she says. “I've enjoyed my work a lot more.”Key Points From This Episode:The story of the fall that took Amandalynn out of commission for six months.Ways that this accident could have been prevented (hint: it's why guardrails exist!)Reasons that artists need personal liability insurance or worker's compensation coverage. What the pain was like and why it looked like Amandalynn was covered in tar.How Amandalynn's ambulance ended up in a ditch on the way to the ER.Why ending up in ICU was a godsend and how Dr. Axelrod screwed her back together. The “circle of witches” that cared for Amandalynn once she returned home.Radical acceptance and the importance of learning to ask for help.Insight into Amandalynn's recovery process, which included rigorous physical therapy.Lessons that she took from this experience, including the value of slowing down. For more information, please visit http://notrealart.com/art-world-horror-stories-amandalynn
