How happy is Singapore? Despite Singapore being a country often defined by fast-paced lifestyles, high levels of stress and an unrelenting drive for progress, Singapore fared relatively well in UN's 2023 World Happiness Report, ranking 25th-happiest out of 137 nations. However, what is stopping us from aiming for first place? Simon Leow, Co-Founder, Happiness Initiative shares with us on what his social enterprise is doing to promote happiness in Singapore. According to the 2023 World Happiness Report, Singaporeans are happier this year compared to a year ago! But, how do we measure happiness? A number of factors including social support, income, health, freedom, generosity and absence of corruption - all evaluate the differences among peoples' happiness levels in different parts of the world. To give us a better understanding of the report Nick Powdthavee, Professor of Economics at Nanyang Technological University and Simon Leow, co-founder of Happiness Initiative share their insights on the matter.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The True Crime genre is a cultural juggernaut for a variety of reasons, but despite its popularity, their focus is often far from the whole truth. From the perspective of the victims, grief and trauma often linger on, and the suffering doesn’t end when the detective cracks the case and puts the criminal behind bars. In this Season 2 Finale episode of the Screwed Up Moments podcast, we explore the hidden side of True Crime with the story of Jan Canty, a widow to a gruesome murder victim, who decided to speak out after 30 years of silence. Home is comfort. Home is security. Home is where our sense of belonging is fulfilled. But for some, home can be dysfunctional and terrifying. A place that brings up resentment rather than love, and which creates traumas instead of rosy memories. In this episode of the Screwed Up Moments podcast, we explore this perspective of home with the story of Jessica Goh, someone whose experience was far more complicated than what your basic internet platitude would suggest. Hello guys, here is another episode of Screwed Up Moments Plus, hope you all are doing well. So, as we all know and as I keep reiterating from the Screwed Up Moments episodes, this show is brought to you by a Singaporean Social Enterprise called Happiness Initiative. Social enterprises in my view, have always been fascinating to me, they are halfway between a for-profit business and a non-profit entity. Basically a business with a social cause. And in this episode, we will be examining that a little further! Where in the previous Screwed Up Moments Plus we were able to learn a little bit about the co-founders of Happiness Initiative and why they started Screwed Up Moments, today we are going to be learning about their social enterprises as well as those of others! I was fortunate enough to attend the local festival Music for a Cause back in August 2019, and I managed to capture a bunch of short interviews with some very interesting people around this very subject. So yeah, hope you find it interesting! Do check out Happiness Initiative they are a really cool entity, and hope you learn something new about social enterprises! Enjoy! President Trump built his personal brand on wealth using tag lines like, “You have to be wealthy in order to be great.” Shortly after Trump's election, Bard MBA in Sustainability students Heather Bowden, Lauren Hill, Nick Shore and Catherine Tedrow spoke with filmmaker John de Graaf, who documented the consumption phenomenon of the 1990s. Their conversation explored the connections among consumption, income inequality, social media and climate change in the context of the election. John de Graaf is a documentary filmmaker and author. Fifteen of his films, including the popular Affluenza, have been broadcast nationally on PBS. He is also the co-author of the books Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic, now in its third edition, and What's the Economy For, Anyway? De Graaf's work investigates the intersections of sustainability, consumerism, health and happiness. He is a senior advisor for Earth Economics, a non-profit ecosystem services organization. He is also a co-founder of the Happiness Initiative and recently served as an advisor to the government of Bhutan as it development its Gross National Happiness project proposal for the United Nations.
Guests Laura Musikanski, Executive Director and co-founder of The Happiness Initiative, and John de Graaf, co-founder of the Happiness Initiative and Executive Director of Take Back Your Time, speak with Diane Horn about the Happiness Initiative and discuss how happiness is key to a more sustainable future.
Jeff Vander Clute Compassionate Action: New Stories, Healing, and Thriving Communities Join us for this conversation between Commonweal’s Michael Lerner and Jeff Vander Clute, executive director of New Stories — an educational organization serving as a resource center, creative collaboratory and project incubator in support of emerging new stories for who we are as humanity, what we are becoming, how we are changing, and where we are going together. Jeff Vander Clute Jeff is helping to build a world based on compassion, joy, and the creative expression of humanity’s potential for thriving. He is one spark among many in the emerging Thriving Communities movement, and he is quietly working to weave a meta-movement in which the various movements of Compassion, Happiness, Peace, Resilience, Wisdom, and Thriving Communities are all in conscious relationship. Jeff is the executive director of New Stories, and a founding editor of the Great Transition Stories project. Previously, as a software engineer, Jeff created an online publishing platform used by over 30 million people and a social-networking platform called Thrive, used to “connect the global heart.” He serves on the boards of the Compassionate Action Network International, the Happiness Initiative (board chair), and New Stories – all 501(c)(3) non-profits working to bring forth a restored, “restoried,” and thriving world. Alexa Clay is an author, economic historian, and director of thought leadership at Ashoka Changemakers. She is co-author of The Misfit Economy, a forthcoming book that looks for economic innovation in the black and gray markets of pirates, hackers, and urban gangs, among others. We begin by talking about economics in the 17th and 18th centuries and its close bonds with philosophy and psychology. From there we trace the increasing abstraction of economics into a formalized, quasi-scientific discipline that has become indecipherable to most people affected by it. This leads to a discussion of agency and other types of economies that have sprung up on the fringes of our global economy. Can these "misfit economies" offer a substantive critique of our current economic system? Do they offer better systems or address the problems of endless growth highlighted by Wes Jackson, Jan Lundberg, and David Korten? Alexa and I talk about these questions in the body of the episode while Micah and I will return to them in our conclusion. Alexa's conversation has a wealth of interesting connections. Editing has left a few on the cutting room floor, but many remain: Douglas Rushkoff and quantification, Colin Camerer and neuroeconomics, Lawrence Torcello and the philosophy of John Rawls. There are far more implicit connections, of which Micah and I talk about Gabriel Stempinski and the sharing economy and Laura Musikanski's Happiness Initiative.
Guest John de Graaf, Executive Director of Take Back your Time, and co-founder of the Happiness Initiative, speaks with Diane Horn about the Happiness Initiative and the Happiness 2012 strategic gathering about Happiness, Compassion, and Sustainability at Seattle University on August 24th and 25th.
Laura Musikanski is the co-founder of the Happiness Initiative and the former Executive Director of Sustainable Seattle. We spoke about her efforts to encourage governments and citizens to rethink gross domestic product as a measure of progress. In lieu of viewing progress in strictly material terms, Larua is advocating a future in which policy decisions are guided by a model of happiness quantification adapted from Bhutan. Laura's conversation has several points of resonance with Cameron Whitten, both because of her focus on social justice and her prioritizing collaborative conversation over specific methods of reform. Her methods of measuring and promoting happiness make an interesting complement (juxtaposition?) to the neuroscience and behavioral economics of Colin Camerer.
