Forget about George Orwell's 1984. That book is a downer. Fanacek's 1984 will lift your spirits as we explore such shows as Crazy Like a Fox, One Day at a Time, and Murder, She Wrote. We'll also crack wise about some forgotten television shows that included the murderous Delta Burke, monkeys with alien superpowers, and a gay dude in Philly. It might be the greatest podcast episode of all time. I said "might be".
Strap on your legwarmers and take a trip back to 1984 with this episode of Nostalgia Junkies! We're diving deep into the pop culture archives, revisiting everything from the iconic debut of ThunderCats to the controversial "Smack Heard 'Round the World" (see video here). In our This or That segment, sponsored by Throwback Buys (use code NJPod for 15% off!), we're debating classic tech like Pac-Man vs. Donkey Kong arcade games and Walkman vs. Discman. Plus, we'll settle the score once and for all: Terminator or RoboCop? Get ready for a nostalgia overload as we explore the December 1984 movie scene with Beverly Hills Cop, Dune, and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo. We'll also reminisce about favorite TV shows like the premiere of Crazy Like a Fox, and the farewell of Captain Kangaroo, Pryor's Place, and Pooh's Corner. And of course, it wouldn't be 1984 without some musical magic! We'll revisit the release of Foreigner's "Agent Provocateur," featuring the iconic "I Wanna Know What Love Is," later covered by Wynonna Judd and Mariah Carey. We'll also celebrate the launch of VH1 and the global phenomenon, "We Are the World" by USA for Africa. In this devotional session, the speaker reflects on the obedience and faith of Noah, highlighting how Noah responded to God's commands to build an ark despite never having seen rain or a flood. Drawing parallels to modern times, the speaker encourages listeners to remain steadfast in their Christian walk, even in the face of discouragement and opposition. The message underscores the importance of yielding fully to God's will, standing strong in faith, and encouraging oneself and others in the Lord. 00:00 Introduction and Greetings 00:14 Reflecting on Elijah A. We made it! We finally decoded a very important ancient Mayan manuscript and found the temple described in the old document deep in the jungles of El Salvador. As we were standing at the entrance, we saw in front of us a very long paved road, leading to a circular pyramid. Each paving slab had a different symbol on it and we knew from the manuscript that we had to align them to make our way safely across. As keen as we were to get to the end, we also knew we had to get back out alive. After all, the secret underground pathway we had discovered was protected by an ancient Mayan Curse by Sylvain Plante and Joe Slack from Crazy Like a Box. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with John Rubinstein, Iconic Stage, Movie & TV Star About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, John Rubinstein, is a highly acclaimed, multi-award winning actor, composer and director whose illustrious career and body of work have made him a respected and beloved icon. He made his Broadway debut starring in “Pippin”, for which he won a Theatre World Award, followed by “Children of a Lesser God”, for which he won a whole slew of awards including a Tony and a Drama Desk Award. He also starred in “The Caine Mutiny Court Martial”, for which he received a Drama Desk Award nomination, “M. Butterfly”, “Love Letters”, “Ragtime” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Off-Broadway, he starred in “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead” and “Counsellor at Law”, for which he received the Lucille Lortel Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play, as well as nominations for both the Outer Critics' and Drama League Awards. He's appeared in over 200 movies, TV shows, made-for-TV movies and miniseries. Some of his most popular feature films are “Getting Straight”, “The Boys From Brazil”, “Someone to Watch Over Me”, “Another Stakeout”, “21 Grams”, “The Candlelight Murders” and “Being the Ricardos”. On TV you've seen him in dozens of TV shows including “Family”, for which he received an Emmy Award nomination, “Crazy Like a Fox”, “Bureau of Alien Detectors”, “Star Trek Enterprise”, “The Young and the Restless”, “Desperate Housewives”, “Dear White People”, “Claws” and many more. His TV movies include “The American Clock”, for which he received a Cable Ace Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, “M.A.D.D.: Mothers Against Drunk Drivers”, “The Gift of the Magi”, “Norma Jean and Marilyn”, and “Liberace”. And some of his noteworthy miniseries are “The French Atlantic Affair”, “Roots: The Next Generations”, “The Two Mrs. Grenvilles”, “When we Rise”, “Feud”, and “Headless: A Sleepy Hollow Story”. He's directed many stage productions, including “Les Liaisons Dangeureuses”, “Macbeth”, “Wait Until Dark”, “Brigadoon”, “Guys and Dolls” and many other shows. Our guest is also a brilliant composer, which comes as no surprise, given that he's the son of the greatest pianist of all time, in my opinion, Arthur Rubinstein. And he's the grandson of the renowned Polish violinist, conductor and composer Emil Młynarski. He's written the music scores for a number of movies and TV shows including “Jeremiah Johnson”, “The Candidate”, “Family”, “The Ordeal of Patty Hearst”, “Johnny Belinda”, “China Beach” and “A Walton Wedding”. And believe me, I'm just scratching the surface of this man's prodigious body of work. The No Nonsense Show Episode #765 Today's episode is about nature. Is killing natural? Is a person crazy if they choose murder? Is it okay to to murder as long as you eat your victim? That seems to work in the animal kingdom. So we are held to a higher standard than them. I get it. I think if you murder someone, you should be forced to eat them. After explaining a bit about why I had to cancel my September trip to Acadia - which I should have been leaving for this upcoming Sunday already - we move the conversation to something a bit more important in the long-run: paper choice. This ties sweetly into what we were talking about in Episode Sixteen, Environmental Impact. Clearly that episode has made an impact on my own thinking. And while speaking on paper choice, the conversation makes a minor shift toward eBooks versus Zines, as Ben and I discuss future projects we are currently working on. The Dean Von Music Podcast Show Coming to you Live from Las Vegas, Nevada
This episode is going to dive deep into the song “Crazy Like Me” a song I wrote in the mid 80 during the time I was singing, playing keyboards and my 12 string acoustic guitar in the band Danger. Crazy Like Me was one of those songs you just write without any expectations of playing the song out live or even recording it. Funny how you only remember the good parts, I'm sure there is a whole lot more that went into writing this song, but all I can remember is playing in our rehearsal studio, sitting on the edge of the drum stage and the only one in the room was the bass player, Mark Canaday, who was very “instrumental” in all of the songs I wrote for Danger, his bass playing and arrangement took the songs in a more progressive nature, if I remember correctly Mark's influences were the The Dixy Dreggs (AKA) The Dreggs, Jeff Beck amoung other Rock, Jazz and Progressive Rock Groups, and have a Bass Play that could sing was a real treat, in my experience playing in bands, it was hard to find someone who could sing, or a band member that even wanted to sing lol. Nothing sends chills up and down one's spine like tight harmonies. Take for instance the Beatles, Eagles, Boston, The Mama's and the Papa's, Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Alice in Chains and many more that could bring the Vocal harmonies to Life. I have my 12 Ovation Acoustic Guitar in my hands and would love to play my original acoustic version of the song, and then I would like to play the recorded version with Danger, this song has been recorded many times, I was not in the studio at the time but when the band was recording music tracks for the song Crazy Like Me somewhere in the North Hollywood area, the bass player for Great White stepped in the played the bass tracks for the song, this story was kept private at the time because Great White was under contract under their new recording label Lots of crazy shit goes on the studio, for instance when we recorded Crazy Like Me, I had laid down my acoustic guitar tracks, to me I thought I did a pretty good job but the lead guitar player Denny Barry must have thought otherwise, because he re-recorded all of my a acoustic guitar tracks, this was kept quiet for many months until one day I said to Denny, man those guitar tracks came out awesome, that's when he confessed and said, well man I had to redo the guitar tracks, I took no offense after all Denny's was the lead guitar player. The song Crazy Like Me was recorded many times by other artists, one artists who was a guitar player asked me if he could re-record the song on his new album, not sure what happened after I gave him permission but I never did hear the finished recording, all I know is that his label paid me very generous to license it. Crazy Like Me was one of those songs that touched peoples heart, I think because I believe that everyone feels like “am I the only one who feels this way” and am I just “Crazy”! trust me there has been many times where I felt this way and though know-one else could ever feel this bad or go thru some of the shit I went thru, this led me to right the song, Crazy Like Me.
