The Voice of Insurance
Ep244 Ian Gutterman: Insurance Hot Potatoes and Movie Sequels

The Voice of Insurance

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2025 50:11

Today's episode is different because I'm not talking to an industry CEO, but somebody who has made a career of holding industry CEOs to account. Since before the turn of the millennium Ian Gutterman has been analysing the insurance industry on behalf of investors and in that time has sparred with all the top CEOs and executive teams. Analysts and journalists are kindred spirits – we both sit on the outside of the industry looking in and we both tend to speak to the same sorts of people, although we tend to ask different sorts of questions when we do. After a while we tend to seek each other out to compare notes. Journalists seek out the smartest analysts with the strongest personalities and the best communication skills and get them to explain some of the more technical and academic questions driving the industry. Ian is a journalist's dream because he is incredibly intelligent but also refreshingly direct. Ian has personality and strong convictions in abundance and in this episode we cover all the big questions affecting the industry today, from when the 15-year bull market for intermediary valuations might come to an end, the wider consequences of the California wildfires and whether the insurers really have a proper handle on cat risk, to whether recent bouts of casualty reserve strengthening are now the end of the matter, or the lessons from the insurtech boom and why Venture Capital and insurance don't mix. Ian and I had a lot of fun on this recording. Listen on and I think you will too Enjoy the podcast NOTES Ian writes a really strong insurance blog at https://iansbnr.com/ I always read it and I highly recommend you do too. It rarely pulls any punches. In the first episode of 2025, Ian is joined by Aaron Carter from the financing desk to discuss recent adjustments in the short-end. The show begins with the duo discussing the importance of the Bank of Canada's move to change the way monetary policy is implemented, namely moving back into a corridor system. Aaron gives his ‘big picture' view on why this is a real game-changer for CORRA, and his expectations around the evolution of the spread to the target rate. Ian takes time discussing the various administered rates in the Canadian short-end and how to think about the subset of arbitrage opportunities. Aaron finishes the episode by describing the incoming tri-party repo system and how that will interact with monetary policy going forward.

Jackie Wassilie emailed: “So..just listened to my first podcast..it was the absolute fastest hour! Totally entertaining in my early quiet morning hour. Awesomeness!” Ryan Weyls shared a photo from Wolfe Tones in Norwalk, CT on March 13: “Hi Marc, here's a photo of the Wolfe Tones from what they say is their last tour of the US. In a nod to our modern era, they had a keyboardist playing bass lines and synth strings, and a laptop was visible onstage as well. The Mac might have been for the slide show or a click track, or both. I'd prefer a live bassist but their extra man made it work with his Roland. Have a great weekend. Patrick Rieger emailed photos right before St Patrick's Day: “Hello Marc, Celtic Pittsburgh was part of the Saint Patrick's Day parade for the first time this year, and it was also my first parade on such a scale. I was part of two tiny parades for other occasions, but nothing like this. Pittsburgh Public Safety estimated 200,000 spectators would be lining the 1.4 miles route, and it certainly looked it. Emerging from under a railroad bridge to reach the start of the parade route and seeing the sides of the streets of downtown Pittsburgh packed with so many people cheering and whooping was a thrill. Some people were even watching from a parking garage. We had seven people marching. Three members marched, as well as some people who volunteered to march with us. Two people were from the Lady MacGregor Lodge #73 of the Daughters of Scotia based in Youngwood, PA. Besides groups honoring Irish and Celtic culture, there were other groups in the parade, including a Ghostbusters fan group. The radio program who interviewed Susan Borowski and I, The Saturday Light Brigade, asked people downtown for the parade to call in and let them know how the parade was going, so I called while we were waiting in the staging area. I have attached some photos, most to show the size of the crowd, and one of the reviewing stand.”

CRASH HOT POTATOES

5 Minute Food Fix

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2023 5:19

[RECIPE IN SHOW NOTES]    One of Simon's favourite foods is... the POTATO. And our cookbook The Food Fix has 3 roast potato recipes in it, THREE!, and they're all different! But this one is a doozy. It's based on a 90s recipe by Jill Dupleix.    Want more food tips? Check out the 5 Minute Food Fix Instagram.    RECIPE   CRASH HOT POTATOES (SERVES 4 as a side)  Cook your potatoes (12 to 16 small potatoes, unpeeled)  in boiling salted water until just cooked when tested with a skewer – about 15 minutes. Drain.  When ready to cook,  place the potatoes on a baking tray lined with baking paper.  Heat the oven to 210C fan-forced (230C conventional). Use a potato masher, the heel of your hand, or the bottom of a water glass, to squash each potato flat – don't worry if it breaks up a bit, that only means more crisp bits at the end. Brush the tops with olive oil (3 tbsp), add a little butter to each one (optional), and scatter with sea salt, pepper, oregano and thyme sprigs.  Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until super-crisp and golden, a bit scorchy at the edges, and serve hot. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We constantly have Celtic music on in our house and we are planning a trip to Ireland this summer.  Our trip three years ago got squashed due to the pandemic." Travis Senzaki replied: "Hi Marc, thank you for continuing to put out this podcast year after year! This St. Patrick's Day, the podcast is really my only connection to Celtic culture, so I'll be spending the evening listening with my kids. Over the years of listening, I have moved from the US to rural Japan, where there is no other access to my Irish roots. I have to travel to even find Guinness on tap. But thanks to you, my kids have picked up on Celtic music (or "Daddy's car music", as they call it) and even recognize it when some of the common themes find their way into movie or game music. I hope to continue sharing this music and culture with them as they grow older, and your podcast remains my best resource to do so. Thank you! Thanks again for all you do! I'm looking forward to listening to the St. Patrick's Day episode(s) over a glass, even if I have to pour it from a can. Slainte!" Sarah Shorter replied: "Good morning Marc. We are enjoying some autumn sunshine down in new zealand. I'm listening with my son (18 months old) and he loves the show. St Patrick's for us will be attending play centre (a parent run education centre) where we will be making shamrock fairy bread.( green sprinkles on buttered bread cut out with a cookie cutter) quite a conglomeration of celtic and new zealand cultures. We will also be bringing in a play list to share with the kids ( aged 0 to5 ) I'm just putting it together now starting from the best of 2022 and 2023 Playlist.. Kia Ora"

I have a show on Wednesday night and will be playing an interview with Kyf Brewer with the Barleyjuice Band from Pennsylvania and playing a few new tunes from Daori Farrell, the High Kings, Doolin', Barleyjuice and Martin Hayes. I hope that you have a great time and fun shows." Eric Guarin (gwa - reen) emailed a question: "Hi Mark, over time the Podcast has included bands from literally all over playing a pretty wide variety of music. Some of it strays quite far from trad pub music - I'm not complaining, it's all great, but it does make me wonder: How do you decide what to play and if it is "Celtic" enough? Cheers,"

Hot Potatoes in Romans: 23. God, the Gospel, and Israel (Romans 11) | Michael Bouterse

Thrive Harbor

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2019 57:01

Periodically in Thrive's Romans series, we're pausing to take up a "hot potato in Romans"—a topic that is culturally "hot" and hard to handle. In this talk, Michael Bouterse, Thrive Harbor's local director, addresses what Romans 11 says about Israel—a nation and people group never too far from political and theological controversy. The story of Israel as told in the Old Testament revolves around God's promise, expressed and developed through multiple covenants, to one day bring salvation through a Messiah descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In Romans 11, Paul reveals that even though God has temporarily cast Israel aside due to their rejection of Jesus as Messiah, their being cast aside is neither total nor permanent. One day God will again take up His dealings with the Jewish people. He will regather them to their ancestral homeland, visit salvation upon a Jewish remnant, and, as a result, bring renewal to the entire world. These events belong to Israel's future, not because human beings are righteous, but because God is faithful; and for that reason, the future of Israel is one of the greatest exhibits in Scripture of God's lavish, unmerited grace. Scripture passages cited (or alluded to) in this message include Genesis 3:14-15; 5:29; 12:2-3, 7; Deuteronomy 28:15, 20-21; 2 Samuel 7:12-16; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26; Isaiah 2:2-4; Matthew 1:1; Romans 11:1-32; Isaiah 11:11-12; Ezekiel 36:8-12; Zechariah 10:6-10; 14:4; 12:10; 13:1; and Genesis 45:1-7.
