This was originally episode 21, and co-hosted with good ol' Cam. It's only available in the Patreon Vault now, but we wanted to give you a little Halloween treat and remind you of this insane episode while the season of spookiness is still upon us!Ashley goes over the history of haunted houses and how they've become more and more intense and well... extreme, over the years, while saying "super" a ridiculous amount of times. She also covers the infamous McKamey Manor. "The Manor", as it's affectionately called by owner Russ McKamey, is a "home haunt" in Russ' backyard where his "actors" and himself torture people for hours on end, without a safe word, while filming it all. The videos are then put on YouTube as torture porn for others to enjoy (or be utterly disgusted and enraged by)!You should also check out episode 22 on extreme haunt, Blackout. And the bonus interview with Jon Schnitzer, creator of "Haunters: The Art of the Scare". He filmed at McKamey Manor over the course of a few years while making his documentary! Royalty-free image by Mayur Gadge from Pixabay Halloween--as in October 31, 2021--may be over. But for fans of horror, it never really ends. Our previous Over Coffee® episode, "Creatives at Halloween", explored creating scary experiences from a maker perspective. This week, for one more "scare" before we move on, we'll look at three other aspects of "scary" creativity. Interactivity, storytelling and the psychology of the scare are in the spotlight--courtesy of Fun Train VR CEO Douglas Nabors, filmmaker/The Brain Factory co-owner Jon Schnitzer, and legendary scare actor/educator Shar Mayer. So--boo! And enjoy. On this edition of Over Coffee®, we cover: A look at Fun Train VR's hit virtual-reality game, "The Exorcist: Legion VR"; A preview of Fun Train's just-announced, scary new title, based on a beloved classic and scheduled for 2022 release!; The principles that guided Jon, in creating his top-rated documentary "Haunters: The Art of the Scare"; How one factor in Jon's production process can also lead to creating a great haunt experience; Shar's strategy, for an effective "scare"; And, her professional standards, for creating something scary!

Over Coffee® | Stories and Resources from the Intersection of Art and Science | Exploring How to Make STEAM Work For You

An Over Coffee® special-edition podcast   Halloween, 2020, is going to be largely virtual.  Think virtual costume competitions, staying-in events and at-home entertainment. Fortunately, a number of creatives, at the intersection of art and science, are up for the challenge.  For this special-edition podcast, we're profiling three previous guests whose work you can enjoy from your home. Filmmaker Douglas Nabors is the Founder/CEO of Los Angeles-based Fun Train VR.  Since our 2018 conversation, Fun Train has been updating their first title, top-rated horror experience The Exorcist: Legion VR. (Image courtesy of Fun Train, and used with permission.)   Today, Douglas emails, the game can be played on the new Oculus Quest 2 headsets!  AND Fun Train has now added MR support to their five-chapter deluxe experience! Not to be confused with XR, MR, or mixed reality, allows a player to juxtapose their VR experience with their physical environment.  The results, with The Exorcist: Legion VR, which Fun Train warns is "not for the faint-hearted", will be truly scary this Halloween. And Fun Train is currently putting finishing touches on a new and very different classic title experience: Tarzan VR!  No release date has been announced as yet, but we'll update you as soon as we know! Summoning the "inner monster" Meanwhile, legendary scare actor/haunt producer Shar Mayer can tell you all about creating a monster--makeup, that is!  And it doesn't take expensive ingredients or previous experience. Shar, whose work includes casting and training actors for Fullerton extreme haunt The 17th Door, talked with us onsite during ScareLA 2018.  She shared her story AND gave some amazing Halloween makeup tips, which we're excited to include here. And in addition to our coverage, you can learn more about Shar's creative career in the great documentary, "HAUNTERS: The Art of the Scare" by filmmaker Jon Schnitzer.   It's a fascinating look at the talent, work and sometimes controversial thought behind extreme Halloween haunts. STEAM gets "spooky" Last, but never least, is one of our all-time favorite makers. We first met STEAM educator/freelance  technologist Mitchell Malpartida  in February, 2018, when he appeared as a special-edition panel guest.  He taught everyone how to create a robotic Valentine! And he continued creating fun stuff, both for his family and his students.  Today, he's the founder of Nevada-based Masterful Creations STEAM Academy!  In addition, he's teaching at this week's free International STEAM Summit, which runs from now through Friday, October 23rd. Last Halloween, Mitchell and his family created three maker projects, including a robotic diorama.   He also taught students how to create Day of the Dead sugar skulls--and the chemistry involved!  This year, he has another fun-scary maker project in the works--and we can't wait to tell you about it! On this edition of Over Coffee® we cover: What was involved for Douglas in creating The Exorcist: Legion VR; The story that greets players when they begin the game; How some moments in the game are scary enough to even startle Douglas!; And, a peek at a forthcoming new title from Fun Train, based on a beloved classic!; Halloween monster makeup tips from Shar; How to use common kitchen ingredients to make a scary monster face (zombie or otherwise!); A technique to create monster makeup (Shar says anyone can do this!); How Mitchell and his family created a fun-spooky Halloween diorama with robotics and 3D printing; What they're currently creating for Halloween 2020; And, a post-Halloween project which Mitchell used to teach schoolchildren chemistry plus creativity!

The videos are then put on YouTube as torture porn for others to enjoy (or be utterly disgusted and enraged by)! There was a lot to go over with the happenings at, and the mysteries surrounding, Mckamey Manor, so we decided to make this a two-parter. Make sure to tune in next week when Cam talks about Blackout! It was one of the first extreme haunts, and is still one of the most intense. It promises a "psychosexual immersive horror experience", and it delivers! People of Planet Earth, what is CRACKIN'?! Ya boys are back with yet another episode of Heroes of Noise. We'll start of by saying that this episode should have been longer. Much longer. Thing is, we were plagued by multiple technical difficulties and had to edit the show down for the sake of quality. But that's not to say we don't give you close to 2 hours of what we do best. This week we briefly discuss the pilot episode of Season 11 of Doctor Who starring Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor, The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix, Apostle (also on Netflix), DC Universe's Titans pilot, The Man in The High Castle (Amazon), Camping (HBO), and finally we talk about the documentary Haunters: The Art of the Scare.  We would like to dedicate this episode to our friend, guest, and longtime listener Johnny Bucks. Happy Birthday, mate! We love you. Lastly, we will be attending Hollywood Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood this Sunday (10/21). If you plan on being there, please hit us up via Twitter, Facebook, or Twitter and let us know you're there. Let's hang and have some fun. We'll be recording for our Halloween episode and would love to include you on it.  So without further ado, let's get busy with episode 39. Put us in your earholes pronto. I always introduce this series by saying that, in “Behind the Screams,” we explore the world of fear, shock, and horror by talking to tastemakers in the genre. I can say without questions that the guest for this episode fits that bill better than anyone I’ve interviewed so far. I was lucky enough to sit down with Jon Schnitzer, director of the fantastic documentary HAUNTERS: THE ART OF THE SCARE. Enjoy...

Director/Writer: Jon Schnitzer Synopsis: Part of the “hobby” docs sub-genre, like King of Kong, this documentary gives us an introduction into the history of haunted attractions, some explanations as to why people have always been drawn to attractions like these, & finally & most compellingly, it shows us some of people responsible for creating the scares. We meet a few lucky haunters who have been able to parlay their passion into a successful career, but by & large we follow the ones who still have day jobs, & who are balancing their hobby with the other aspects of their lives with varying degrees of success.Haunters official websiteIntro/Outro music courtesy Peter Perfect.
