The mountains were filled with trees and creeks. The loneliness was called the Dead Hills. They were thirty miles wide. There were thousands of hills out there: yellow and barren in the summer with lots of juniper brush in the draws and a few pine trees here and there, acting as if they had wandered away like stray sheep from the mountains and out into the Dead Hills and had gotten lost and had never been able to find their way back...poor trees..." The podcast heads west for this October's horror fiction episode, where they find a couple cowboy killers recruited from a brothel to vanquish a mischievous monster in an isolated mansion out in Eastern Oregon. Richard Brautigan's rugged, experimental, very funny The Hawkline Monster: A Gothic Western begins as a travelogue of turn-of-the-century frontier life and makes a drastic shift to the surreal when the two gunmen (who don't put any lace on their killings) reach their sinister assignment. Artist and American Western history expert David Lambert is on hand to offer his take on whether countercultural cult poet/novelist Brautigan passes muster as a western writer, or if Hawkline Monster is a xerox copy of an audacious literary achievement. Lambert talks with hosts Christopher Funderburg and John Cribbs about the unmistakable Brautigan-ness of the novel, how the book fares when it moves into much stranger territory in its second half, and the fascinating decades-spanning background of multiple failed movie adaptations. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of fantastic musicians who've been intimately involved with each other's lives and work for the past decade and a half: Cate Le Bon and Huw Evans. Le Bon and Evans each have their own incredible discographies that wouldn't have been the same without the other: They're not in a band together, but each has been a key component of the other's work over the years, starting when they were young and romantically involved. Though they're no longer in a relationship, they're still a huge part of each other's lives. And as you'll hear in this conversation, they like to give each other shit—to the point where while recording I wasn't sure if there was some real hostility happening. (There wasn't.) Evans records under the name H. Hawkline, and this week he'll release his fifth album, Milk For Flowers. It's his most personal and intense yet, though strong emotions remain shrouded in what he once called “strange pop.” Hawkline first found a bit of fame in his and Le Bon's native Wales as a TV presenter, but found his musical voice with a unique blend of classic-sounding songwriting flecked with psychedelic and folk influences. He's worked with Tim Presley of White Fence a bunch; as you'll hear, Presley even played a pivotal non-musical role in the creation of Milk For Flowers. Le Bon produced it, helping to shepherd some intense feelings onto tape. Here's the title track. Evans was there right at the start of Le Bon's career, as you'll hear in this chat: They were living together, and he convinced her to start playing her otherworldly songs outside of their house. He even had to come up with her stage name in order to create a flyer: What may or may not have been a reference to Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon stuck. The two eventually moved to Los Angeles together and continued making music: Le Bon has amassed an unforgettable discography—you know immediately when you hear her music. (Jeff Tweedy once said he could always tell when it was Le Bon playing guitar, which sounds like a compliment to me.) Le Bon's latest album is last year's Pompeii, a grand, height-of-the-pandemic record that feels like an amazing high-wire act, with saxophone, clarinet, and synthesizers all complementing her voice, guitar, and bass. And it's a matter of some debate, as you'll hear, whether Evans contributed any bass as well. Check out “Remembering Me” from Pompeii. In addition to giving each other grief about song titles and bass parts, the two talk about their history together, about how Le Bon narrowly avoided recording a song that sounded like Jane's Addiction, their different writing styles, and about how the story of Le Bon's first gig was like “a shit indie film.” Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Huw Evans and Cate Le Bon for letting us in on their chat. If you liked what you heard, please followTalkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and be sure to check out all the other podcasts in our network, including Jokermen, Craig Finn's That's How I Remember It, and more. A smorgasbord of fresh tunes from H. Hawkline, Andy Shauf, Sorry Girls, Tennis, Black Belt Eagle Scout, Jenny Hval, Fever Ray, dumb & TJ Felix, who'll be in-studio next week as a special guest co-host. Pretty good ep.
Bandaríski rapparinn og söngkonan Lauryn Hill túrar nú um heiminn í tilefni 20 ára afmæli fyrstu og einu sólóplötu sinnar; The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. Platan sló í gegn á sínum tíma og er löngum orðin klassík í sögu hiphopsins. Í Lestinni í dag verður fjallað um eitt lag af plötunni í þætti dagsins; lag sem skiptir tónlistarkonuna miklu máli enda lag sem fjallar um fæðingu Zions, fyrsta barns hennar og Rohans Marley. Marta Sigríður Pétursdóttir, kvikmyndarýnir Lestarinnar, fjallar í dag um nýja heimildarmynd eftir Grím Hákonarsonar, Litlu Moskvu, sem fjallar um Neskaupsstað og ítök sósíalista og Alþýðubandalagsins þar í 52 ár. Og Karl Ólafur Hallbjörnsson fjallar í pistli sínum í dag um tímaflakk og hugtök tímans. Umsjón: Anna Gyða Sigurgísladóttir og Eiríkur Guðmundsson

Rob and Callum are back with another new music podcast, this week playing a handful of great things from the stinking UK. There's a good soul/jazz/funk scene going on in England so we have some Bastien Keb, some ace post-punk from H. Hawkline and hardcore punk from Sheffield's Rat Cage. There's also some real good Oz indie stuff from Rat Columns and Dag, some spoken word soul funk from Nicotin's Famous Honey, country from Julia Lucille and some sweet soul music from Finland's Pratt & Moody. This is called the Crumbscast for no better reasons than that I like the name and that it starts with a song called Crumbs, the new single by Jonnie Common. Given I've had to try and think up unique names for all of these bastard things anything which sounds good and has at least a tenuous link to the topic at hand will do. I've not done a podcast for ages actually, but the last one was the one just before the independence referendum, and I still feel so utterly let down and disappointed with how that went that I've been unable to really talk about it since. On you go, Westminster, you're doing a decent enough job really - at least a better one than we could ever hope to do on our own. Is that really the message we just delivered to the world? Yes, yes I think it is, at least to some degree. How sad. So you see, probably a good thing that I waited at least a couple of weeks for the worst of the depressed bitterness to wear off. I almost get dragged into it at the start of the podcast, but like a champ I manage to break free and deliver an hour (and a little bit) of the usual awesome music that no-one's really heard of because the world is WRONG about music. Sorry. 01. Jonnie Common - Crumbs (00.22)02. Tired Tape Machine - Your Ghost (07.30)03. Passion Pusher - BLT (17.18)04. Allison Crutchfield - Supermoon (22.22)05. So, as I said last week, we should now be stumbling back to something vaguely resembling equilibrium here at Song, by Toad. The releases are out, nowt else has a fixed date, we're cruising into Summer and dammit I better find something to do soon before I get a fit of the lazies. Which is what happens to me when I have too little to do.So this podcast is a fairly normal trip through a pile of shiny new songs, with a brief detour to mark the occasion of Mrs. Toad and I celebrating our sixth anniversary, which we did this weekend just past. Dress Sexy at My Funeral may sound like a rather inappropriate song for an anniversary, but I like it nevertheless. The sentiment has a certain degree of 'fuck you' to it, which is one of the things which makes our relationship rather fun to be in, from my perspective. And as I said when introducing the Billy Bragg song, it's a funny thing to think that Mrs. Toad and I first met at school as fifteen year olds. And presumably back then we were just normal high school kids thinking about normal high school things, with not the slightest inkling that this embryonic friendship would turn out to be the most important relationship in our lives. Which I think is rather sweet, actually.01. Ringo Deathstarr - Rip (00.22)02. H. Hawkline - Black Domino Box (07.36)03. Smog - Dress Sexy at My Funeral (15.51)04.
