Actor Donovan W. Carter’s starring role in HBO’s popular sports comedy series “Ballers,” has quickly established the DC native and former UCLA football player as a sought after actor and performer. On the show Donovan plays the role of the young and talented NFL defensive tackle ‘Vernon Littlefield,’ who is doing his best to self-navigate his newly found wealth and status within the NFL’s elite social circle, which is fraught with opportunists and enablers only out for themselves. “Ballers” was created by Stephen Levinson (Entourage) who also executive produces the series with an assorted array of talented colleagues such as Julian Farino, Denis Biggs, Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg, and Peter Berg among others.

"Yearly campaigns shouldn't be a reinvention of who you are. There should be a core of what you are & what you stand for & what you look like." On this week's show, Surf Melendez joins me to discuss his non-traditional path to the Miami Dolphins where he is Managing Director of Content & Creative for the team overseeing a group of talented creatives that are working with ownership to build an in-house agency. From an architecture degree at Florida, to a career in the restaurant industry & finance, we touch on Surf's eventual landing at ad agency Crispin Porter Bogusky where he launched into the creative world. Due to the crazy hours of advertising and having kids, Surf tell of life change and a passion for sport that lead to Adidas where he created for running, training & football. The want to move back home pointed him to the Miami, where they were wanting to build an in-house agency and serendipitously, the CMO used to be at CP+B client BK. We discuss the team's moves to cultivate a creative culture, their campaigns, controlling what goes out from a marketing perspective and their approach to building a global brand. Finally, Surf leaves us with wisdom on building brands from within organizations. Be sure to stick around after the ending for some extra audio regarding a Dolphins/Marvel collab. In this episode we take a look at HBO's Ballers starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The script describes Spencer Strasmore as mid-30's, black, former All-pro running back. Always ran hard. Grew up in Virginia Beach.... and producer and writer Stephen Levinson always claimed that he had Dwayne Johnson in mind for the role... We explore more of these subtle and not-so-subtle differences between the written pilot and the final production of Ballers. Joining Dwayne Johnson are relative newcomers John David Washington (Denzel Washington's son), and Omer Benson Miller. The hilarious Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, Children's Hospital) provides excellent comedic moments as Strasmore's coworker/immediate manager and wannabe baller. By the same people that brought you Entourage (Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson) Ballers brings a smaller extravagance and peek into a world we only wonder about. Follow Spencer Strasmore as he comes to terms with his new place in the world, while balancing the challenges and opportunities his friends, family and former life present.
