Back at the beginning of 2025, I decided that I wanted to double-down on my mastery of GURPS as the roleplaying game system that I actually consistently enjoy. Alongside that I decided that I wanted to take on the challenge of developing my own science-fiction space-based game. This would involve creating a sector of space and working out the basis for different approaches to SF play within it. With a month of anxious dithering behind me, I found inspiration while sitting with the face-to-face group prior to continuing our current Cthulhu investigation: one of the players expressed, not for the first time, a desire to play something SF. Given my realisation that I have transitioned towards a more improvisational style at the table, I determined that it would be fun to create a framework within which we might play. This episode is drawn from the play notes that I made one Sunday in February 2025, which were then posted on the Roleplay Rescue blog at roleplayrescue.com. Why share them here? Well, firstly they turned out to be a truly enlightening series of notes for me as a potential science-fiction GM, unlocking many of the doors to playing SF that I had experienced being closed tight ever since my earliest experiences with Traveller in the late 1970s and early 1980s.Big thanks to Carl D and Brian for taking the time to record some messages.Game on!New Frontiers Map:https://roleplayrescue.com/2025/02/06/new-frontiers-part-v/Roleplay Rescue Details:Voice Message:speakpipe.com/roleplayrescuePatreon:patreon.com/rpgrescue Email:roleplayrescue@pm.meBlogroleplayrescue.com Bluesky Social:https://bsky.app/profile/ubiquitousrat.bsky.socialMeWe:https://mewe.com/p/roleplayrescueRoleplay Rescue Theme by Jon Cohen from Tale of the Manticore:https://taleofthemanticore.podbean.com/Logo and artwork by MJ Hiblen:https://www.patreon.com/MJHiblenART/ Hosted on Acast. It was a cold November evening on the 26th, 2004, in Van Buren, Missouri, when the events that would soon unravel in the small, unsuspecting town began to take shape. Two men, Lance Shockley and his sister-in-law's fiancé, Jeffrey Bayless, embarked on an innocent enough drive in Bayless' truck. But as they made their way, something went wrong. Under Shockley's control, the vehicle careened off the road, plunging into a ditch. But it wasn't the crash that would raise the most questions—it was what happened afterward that would haunt everyone involved. As the investigation unfolded under Highway Patrol Sergeant Carl DeWayne Graham, Jr., the small town would see another person lose their life. Study after study suggests that human brain development is greatly diminished by the use of digital media. One such study shows that for every hour of media a child consumes per day under the age of three, the risk of ADHD at age seven goes up by 10%. As new technologies, including AI, emerge, what can be done to protect mental health and brain development against them? For insights about the effect of technology on neurodynamics, Harvesting Happiness Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with a leader in the fields of social and consumer neuroscience, Psychiatrist Dr. Carl D. Marci.Dr. Marci shares research about the effects of social media and new technologies on a developing brain and unpacks the central tenets of his newest book, REWIRED: Protecting Your Brain in the Digital Age. We know there are so many things we can and should be doing for our patients to help them achieve better outcomes and reach their goals. What do you know about priming? Are you doing anything that primes their system for learning? If so, how are you measuring it? How do you know it's working? Join us for a discussion on the latest research, inspired by a podcast by the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy of the APTA released on June 29, 2023 where the authors of a 2023 article discuss their interpretation of the findings: “A Systematic Review on the Effects of Acute Aerobic Exercise on Neurophysiological, Molecular, and Behavioral Measures in Chronic Stroke.” Staying up to date with the latest research can be challenging. Finding time to discuss that research with others is also a challenge - so join us today and listen in on our discussion! We will discuss the key takeaways from the research including the recommendation to perform 20-30 min of aerobic exercise. This bout gets them in the intensive zone, creates aerobic priming that helps them get the heart rate up, so their brain is primed for learning during cognitive, functional or gait activities in the session. Rewired is one of the most important new books I have read that has yet to get significant media attention. Dr. Marci is a Harvard psychiatrist and social neuroscientist who uses incontrovertible scientific evidence in this remarkable and sobering book. He has a chapter titled ‘The Power of the Prefrontal Cortex' that describes it as the ‘most highly evolved part of the modern human brain.' It performs executive functions and is an ‘orchestral conductor of neuronal symphonies' in our brain. One of the central premises of this book is that our obsession with social media and cell phones is rewiring our brains and causing irreversible damage. Specific advice on what we can do to have a healthy tech-life balance is given and discussed. Please listen to this fascinating and essential conversation at this pivotal time in human history. We need to control our technology and not allow our technology to control or unduly influence us. Learn more about Steven Hassan and Freedom of Mind Resource Center.
