From ‘Scandal' to social justice, Black Twitter has dominated digital discourse, a phenomenon Prentice Penny explores in his new Hulu docuseries, “Black Twitter: A People's History,” based on Jason Parham's 2021 feature for Wired. Penny and Parham, along with J Wortham of the New York Times Magazine, join host Brian Stelter to discuss Black Twitter's cultural impact, and its future.
For all the influence Twitter has had on our culture, no community there has made quite as much impact as Black Twitter. The virtual community grew from a loose online hangout to an influential cultural force that directed conversations about race and culture not only on social media, but in our society at large. A new documentary miniseries from Hulu called Black Twitter: A People's History charts that monumental trajectory. This week on Gadget Lab, we chat about the rise and solidification of Black Twitter with showrunner Joie Jacoby, director and executive producer Prentice Penny, and WIRED senior writer Jason Parham, who wrote the WIRED cover story the docuseries is based on.Black Twitter: A People's History premieres on May 9th on Hulu. Victor Gabriel and Duran Jones and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new Sundance film Hallelujah, poverty and justice, drama, death and belonging, resilience, oppression and innocence lost, Cornel West, James Baldwin and why storytelling and human experience are intimately connected.Victors Directors Statement: "A theme that is ever present in my life is the question “How do I overcome my suffering? Is it even possible?” More specifically in this story it is the idea of grieving the people I have lost, the loved ones we have all lost. A sub theme is the idea of belonging and finding home. Where is home? As someone who has been abandoned, displaced, neglected and had to move around and live with different people, home is nebulous at best. But what I realize for me is that though I may never “belong”, I am deeply loved by many people. And being loved is more important to me than belonging.”Synopsis:Chetty and Paper are two brothers who refuse to grow up. But due to unforeseen circumstances, they are now in charge of their nephew HALLELUJAH,a strange book quoting black boy and their quiet niece Lila. Sitting in the backyard, supposedly watching their niece and nephew, the two brothers become so distracted they don't notice when Hallelujah attempts suicide. What follows is a funny moving story about family, the people we have left behind, and the people who are still with us.About Victor and Duran:Growing up in poverty, Victor Gabriel realized that water in cornflakes doesn't taste as bad as you think it would. He wandered without a home before eventually ending up in Compton, CA. Now as a black male writer/director and recent MFA graduate of AFI Conservatory, he has turned to filmmaking as way for him to wrestle with his own suffering as well as the suffering of others. He holds an MA in Clinical Psychology and has been working as a Marriage and Family Therapist with survivors of trauma in Compton/Watts/South Central for the past several years. His short film BLACK BOYS CAN'T CRY, won the Social Impact Award at the Hollyshorts Film Festival and is currently being shown in others. His favorite movie is Richard Donner's Superman. He likes Red Vines and thinks Twizzlers are trash. BIG FACTS.Duran Jones is a 2007 graduate of Hampton University, with a BA in Broadcast Journalism. He is an accomplished independent rapper and songwriter with a keen sense of storytelling. In 2017, he completed his first short film titled BLKMGC, an urban musical based on the shooting death of Tamir Rice at the hands of police. Duran is also known for his 2011 tribute to Trayvon Martin and his subsequent interview on CNN.Now a Producing Fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory, his goal is to tell stories for people of color that are truthful and impact the global community. While studying at AFI he graduated from the 2020 PGA Power of Diversity workshop, where his pilot “Daywalker” received interest from Mary Parent, Gary Lucchesi and Prentice Penny.Image Copyright and Credit: BLK Magic Content and Victor GabrielF2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. How can white people leverage their privilege and allyship in creating a more inclusive Hollywood? What should individual artists of all backgrounds do to instigate systemic change? Prentice Penny, Aldis Hodge, Bob the Drag Queen, Rashida Jones, Justin Simien, Simone Missick, Jonathan Majors, and Janet Mock gave us frank answers to these questions and more. For Black listeners, there’s plenty of actionable advice on working in the biz; for non-Black listeners, we hope these conversations provide perspective, reflection, and a call to action. As Prentice says in a previously unaired clip, fighting for authentic representation and ending discrimination in Hollywood isn’t solely the responsibility of people of color: “It should be on the system to fix the system.” Check out coverage of the Black Lives Matter movement here: https://bit.ly/3a7QWo9 Joining this week’s Backstage casting insider segment is Destiny Lilly, New York theater casting director and advocate for actors and artists. What does a TV showrunner do? More to the point, how many other tasks does a TV showrunner tend to take on? What is their relationship to actors? In today’s deep dive episode, Ben Sinclair of “High Maintenance” and Prentice Penny of “Insecure” reveal the creative and logistical processes of keeping a hit show...running! Writer-director-editor-actor Ben Sinclair became a pioneer of short form content alongside Katja Blichfeld by developing a community of filmmakers around “High Maintenance.” First a hit Vimeo web series, then as of 2016 a half-hour anthology series on HBO, “High Maintenance” features snapshots of modern New York City life, each episode featuring Ben as a cannabis courier known only as The Guy. Ben’s critically acclaimed work has earned him a Writers Guild of America Award. Multihyphenate Prentice Penny got his start in Hollywood writing on the hit sitcom “Girlfriends,” before contributing to the writers’ rooms on, and often producing episodes of, “Scrubs,” “Happy Endings,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and more. He is the showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s hit “Insecure,” created by and starring Issa Rae, now nominated for eight 2020 Emmy Awards including outstanding comedy series. Prentice also wrote and directed the acclaimed Netflix film “Uncorked.” For more on showrunners and their advice, check out Backstage.com: https://bit.ly/33yDl4J --- Backstage has been the #1 resource for actors and talent-seekers for 60 years. Our latest remotely recorded pod is the first to come with remotely recorded, socially responsible interviews, as Chris Hewitt has lovely chats from a minimum safe distance with Military Wives' star, Sharon Horgan, and Prentice Penny, writer and director of the charming Netflix drama, Uncorked. Either side of those, Chris is joined-ish by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Ben Travis, as they talk the week's movie news (Marvel release dates ahoy!), review Who You Think I Am, Uncorked, and Trolls World Tour, and answer listener questions. Oh, and our new fact section gets a new name, while Ben reveals a hitherto unheralded skill. Enjoy.
As we continue to scramble for freshly released material, Netflix has the hook up! Our first film is THE PLATFORM, originally known in its origin country of Spain as EL HOYO. Andy has Five Good Questions for Noah about the hugely popular flick. The second consecutive Netflix film is Prentice Penny's drama, UNCORKED. Andy saw this one, so Noah tosses Five Good Questions at him. In the latest PICK SIX segment, we're hitting close to home yet again (pun intended) during the quarantined times. We are ranking the BEST HOME INVASION FILMS of all time. Finally, we end an already darkly themed episode with a revisit of one of the most gut-wrenching documentaries ever released. The THROWBACK CHALLENGE is Kurt Kuenne's 2008 film, DEAR ZACHARY: A LETTER TO A SON ABOUT HIS FATHER. Phew. We're gonna need some sedatives and a slew of light-hearted flicks on the immediate docket ASAP. Cheers! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-film-harmonic/support
