This week we dive into the patch notes that have the recent changes to the Burning Blade encounter as well as the functionality changes to the Blunderbuss. It's interesting to discuss options for people and if this change came too soon given the reason for the shift in meta for PVP on smaller ships. All that and more on this week's episode! Jagbags favorite Sherrie Adams joins Jagbags once again and this time the subject is Jack White. Which albums are his best? What incarnation was better -- White Stripes, the Raconteurs, or the Dead Weather? Sherrie goes through her top 5 albums with the guys and listens politely as they list their incorrect choices. Beave reads faxes from a hurt Bruce Springsteen, wondering when Sherrie would like to talk about his music -- while Sherrie pronounces him the "Middle Manager" as opposed to "The Boss". We also talk Jack White's guacamole scandal, and why specifically he hates the Black Keys. Tune in for ultimate rock riffs!

For this episode, we got to sit down with Joel Mora. If you're from around the Houston area, you most likely know him as the longtime drummer of punk rock stalwarts, The Hates. If you're from around the Galveston area, you know him from Blunderbuss, Red Cap and Worthless Cause. If you're from anywhere in the country, you know him as the owner of the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe, which he and his wife Angela took over in 2018 from the original owner, Rex Bell. Did we mention he started up Old Quarter Records, as well? Joel has been on all sides of the musical landscape and we were happy to sit down with him to discuss life in the independent music world as a musician, fan, label owner and venue owner. This is our longest episode yet, but there was a lot to cover and we're really excited with how it came out! We hope you dig it! Check out upcoming shows at the Old Quarter on their website: https://oldquarteracousticcafe.com/
They're at times his biggest fans, and at times his stalwart adversaries -- they're rock journalists and they have something to say about Jack White. And say it they have, ever since the early days of the White Stripes music reviewers were (and are) an ever-present aspect of how the public perceives Jack White the artist. In this first episode of an new recurring series, we're going to take a long hard look at the critical responses to each of Jack White's 5 (at the time of this recording) solo studio albums - from Blunderbuss straight on through to Entering Heaven Alive - in an attempt to analyze the music reviewer reaction to Jack White's body of solo work. We're also thrilled to be joined by Consequence of Sound staff writer Jonah Krueger, who himself reviewed Jack White's latest album, and who offers an invaluable perspective on the responsibilities inherent in the role of the rock journalist. This episode of the Third Men Podcast is going CRITICAL. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Single Sonic Seven is an album created in collaboration with musicians on all seven continents. The two year-long project's roots are found in quarantine-era Berlin, while its final path was deeply shaped by a personal connection to the war in Ukraine. I spoke with Single Sonic Seven producer Ethan Miska about the project. Ethan shared some wisdom and insight about collaborating with so many people on a single project. We even spoke about how his new hobby of making his own peanut butter made him a better producer and how a little (but not too much) chaos can help our creativity. The Folly of Climate Alarmists with James Bacon Virginia's best journalist, Mr. Jim Bacon today joined The Two Mikes to discuss climate and education issues in the state. On the climate Issue Mr. Bacon said that the state government had plans for extensive offshore wind farms and on-land solar-panel farms as part of its attempt to meet zero-carbon requirements by 2045. The first step toward the wind farm is the construction 0f a $500 million boat that will be used to move windmill blades out to the base of each windmill. Virginia's game plan seems a bit ambitious and also more than a little expensive, especially because solar and wind power will never supply more than 30-percent of the state's electricity requirements. Given this reality, excessive focus on building such alternate energy facilities would yield disastrous results for Virginia's citizenry and industries if the electrical grid was ever severely challenged or badly damaged by weather or other causes. At the moment, the state's plans sound a bit like hopping off of one horse when another is not available. On education, Mr. Bacon said the state's K-12 education system is in a catastrophic state, especially in high poverty areas. The entire K-12 environment appears to be a mess as teacher resignations have risen to unprecedented numbers, and the feeders for new teachers -- Virginia's teacher colleges -- are now producing teachers who are advocates of wokism not education. Mr. Bacon added that there may be a bit more optimism regarding the state's overall system of public universities as Governor Youngkin's administration is appointing anti-wokism members to the board of the state's public universities. --Mr. Bacon's writings, blogs, and reporting can be found at: Bacon's Rebellion: http://www.baconsrebellion.com/wp/ The Blunderbuss: https://www.baconsrebellion.com/wp/the-blunderbuss/ Please go on the www.twomikes.us website Contact page to send questions or inquiries Sponsors Our Gold Guy: https://www.ourgoldguy.com EMP Shield: https://www.empshield.com/?coupon=twomikes www.TwoMikes.us

In this episode, we look at the the follow up to Dead Weather's first album, sophomore drop Sea of Cowards. This album is more or less of the same ilk to the former album, showing iterations of what works and even what doesn't about the group. Nonetheless, this band was known for incredible live shows and electric energy. The next album we look at is the solo debut of Jack White. Just before 2011's Blunderbuss was released, the White Stripes announced they would not be coming back. This meant that Jack White was no longer tied to band with self-imposed limitations -- he was the conductor, and fully able to expand his ideas. It would become clear that there is a difference between a song written as Jack White for the White Stripes, and the songs Jack would write in the studio with studio musicians. Jack would be criticized for leaving his Little Room, but this moment was earned time and time again, and the album has some of Jack's best moments.--Jack White rose to legendary musician status via his breakthrough band, The White Stripes. Coming out as a blues rock, punk aesthetic garage rock band with child-like drummer Meg White, The White Stripes paved the way for a lot of acts to come. As their success grew, Jack White branched out into other projects, including the classic rock inspired "super group" The Raconteurs, and Led Zeppelin-spirit revival, hard as nails "super group," The Dead Weather. As Jack gained momentum elsewhere, The White Stripes came to an end, leaving room for Jack White to explore a solo career. Throughout his solo career, he started honing his comfort material -- country, blues, and fuzz rock -- moving toward new grounds with experimental noise, high tech production, and unexpected plot twists.Tyler, being a conseur of pop and knower of all things music, and Greg, a Jack White super fan, have a lot to say on Jack White, including a plethora of insights and context into the creation of this music, the cultural impact of Jack White and his embedded philosophies, and the growth of self and artist.

Today, Darren and Gary are discussing all things Blunderbuss including history, kit assembly, and turkey hunting! The Blunderbuss is a very unique muzzleloader so it is only fitting that the History is equally unique. When most people think of the Blunderbuss they think of pirate ships or Elmer Fudd but the Blunderbuss is much more than that. In addition to being the ideal choice for clearing ship decks, the Blunderbuss also played a crucial role in settling the frontier! Tune in to this episode of the Muzzle-Loaders Podcast to learn even more about the Blunderbuss!

Our show is an open book, take a look! And if you do... you might just find our latest album analysis & review episode waiting for you -- highlighting 2011's epic ROME project, originated by Danger Mouse and Daniele Luppi and contributed to by the likes of Jack White, Nora Jones and more! Sometimes referred to as one of the "lost" Jack White solo projects, this album of gorgeous material intended to evoke the feeling of classic "spaghetti westerns" like The Good the Bad and the Ugly was a playground for soundtrack enthusiast Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse), who made a name for himself as DJ and producer on such projects as The Grey Album and both hit records by Gnarles Barkley. Of course, when Jack White was approached to contribute both lyrics and vocals to several tracks on the record, Jack jumped at the chance to participate in one of the grandest musical experiments of the decade, and explore time as a solo artist in the era prior to Blunderbuss, Lazaretto and the other personal projects that would see the light of day over the course of the next decade on TMR. Joining us for this discussion today is Coppersound Pedals brainchild Alex Guaraldi, whose triplegraph pedal has graced many a Third Man release for years now. We'd like to thank Alex for joining us on this journey and hope you all enjoy listening to this discussion as much as we enjoyed having it! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We have finally made it into the beginning of Marcus' story in this week's episode covering Ch. 6, 9, and 12 of Time's Convert. We're discussing family dynamics, problematic stereotypes, being a product of one's time, , infectious diseases, and more. Plus, this week in our reading we get a special cameo from OG Sarah Bishop! Content warning for discussion of domestic violence.
Blunderbuss is an adjective that means a frequently blundering person. Our word of the day sometimes refers to a firearm with a short muzzle. The word is derived from the Dutch word for ‘thunder.’ But blunderbuss can also refer to a person prone to many blunders, for example: I don't think it’s such a good idea to leave Tim in charge of the cash register this weekend. Knowing what a blunderbuss he can be, there’s a chance the till will be way off.

How's quarantine going? Drinking gasoline again? Well, behave yourself (!) and listen to the second installment in the three-part epic we could only call - LAZARETTO: Album Analysis & Review! When last we left our deep dive, the massive success and excess creative energy brought about by the Blunderbuss project gave way to instrumental sessions that would eventually evolve into Jack White's second solo album. With lyrics cribbed from some teenage hand-scribbles discovered in White's attic, Lazaretto at last came to life in the early summer months of 2014 - to massive sales and fanfare. This episode, we welcome special guest Ryan Brady (Take it Away: the Complete Paul McCartney Archive Podcast) back to the show to walk through the entire track listing of Lazaretto with us as we spelunk the cavernous depths of Jack White's infinite imagination. (But that's not all Ryan will be helping us do! Tune in May 15th for the continuation of Ryan, Paul and James' Lazaretto discussion on the NOW HEAR THIS podcast!) All this, plus album reception, the answer to the mystery cover shoot location, Dirk the Butt Guy, our own personal rating of the album and much, much more awaits you in this massive lily pad of an episode. So pour yourself just one drink and bring those troubles of yours right down to their knees - we're here fighting for your love on the Third Men Podcast! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Bored rotten during quarantine? The Third Men Podcast is here to pass you some coffee, cotton and a new entry into our deepest of deep-dive episodes - it's LAZARETTO: Analysis & Review vol.1 (of 3)! For Jack White's sophomore solo LP, the third man took the lessons of his smash debut Blunderbuss and expanded them into one of the most complex recordings of his entire career, spanning 18 months, dozens of musicians, and an unlikely co-writing partnership with...himself? During touring breaks in 2012, Jack and his two bands, the Buzzards and the Peacocks, would lock themselves in the studio to lay down some badass instrumental music which varied wildly in genre, tempo and structure. With these collections of sound pictures safely in the vault, Jack & co would return to their world tour...but how would White apply lyrics to music he was so subsequently disconnected from? Enter Jack White's 19 year old self, appearing in the form of plays, poetry, lyrics and other assorted mind-scribblings unearthed in an attic and ripe for the picking. This blend of past and present would establish a new and exciting trajectory for Jack White's musical future, and this week we get into the nitty gritty on just how that story came to be. Plus, Third Person Derrik Ferguson takes us on a tour of HIS Jack White past in the form of some incredible concerts in each of Jack's various incarnations over the past 20 years. It's all here in part one of a triptych of episodes dedicated to our continued survival down in the Lazaretto... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Due to the coronavirus, the UK has been under lockdown, and people only allowed to leave their homes under very strict conditions! However, one blunderbuss felt the urgent need to go shopping and dressed up like a bush in order to disguise himself from the police lest he is discovered walking the streets! Blunderbuss is another word for a stupid, blundering fellow. Neighbors happened to catch some video of the man covered head to toe in leaves as he tried to scurry from the street to his door, stopping from time to time and assuming a pose as a ‘shrubbery’ to avoid drawing any attention to himself. At one point, he even trips and falls clutching his precious grocery bag! What’s another word for a clumsy person? A gawkhammer! The short video of the bushman has gone viral on TikTok with the caption, Neighbor Sneaking Out To Get His Shopping. The question is, how would the police handle this anyway? With a bottle of Roundup perhaps?

About This Episode "Limiting myself to a genre has never really been my thing," says Pokey LaFarge. "I'm most purely a rambler. I'm traveling the world all the time, and my songs have been directly influenced by my travels. You're liable to hear something in my songs that sounds like traditional jazz; next thing you know, you might be hearing something that sounds like Bob Dylan's Nashville Skyline mixed with the chanson singers of France, or a waltz mixed with cumbia, or soul mixed with swing." Ever since his first record, 2006's self-released Marmalade, LaFarge has been a difficult specimen to pin down, indeed. Though he was raised on a healthy diet of blues, bluegrass, ragtime, Western swing and old-time country — and though he has consistently demonstrated a decided affinity for pre-1950s menswear — the Illinois native is by no means a throwback or a museum piece. Timelessness, and refined good taste, is LaFarge's raison d'être, and his influences are as multi-hued and wide-ranging as the rhythms that buoy his starkly poetic songs — rhythms that are steeped in the very essence of jazz. "With me, lyrics are the most important thing," he explains. "But when it comes to music, it's just as much about the groove — something about the groove that makes me want to move, you know? There's always a little bit of swing to it, something that's got a bounce. I mean, people have been swinging for hundreds of years!" LaFarge's deft way with words and music — as showcased on such dynamite discs as 2008's Beat, Move and Shake, 2010's Riverboat Soul, 2011's Middle of Everywhere, and 2015's Something in the Water — has won him raves from critics, and inspired a devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic. Jack White, recognizing LaFarge as a kindred spirit, asked him to sing and play mandolin on White's 2012 album Blunderbuss, took LaFarge and his band the South City Three out on tour as a supporting act, and signed him to Third Man Records for 2013's Pokey LaFarge LP. LaFarge also performed the White-penned "Red's Theater of the Absurd" in a saloon scene in Gore Verbinski's 2013 film The Lone Ranger, an appearance which eventually led to landing the recurring role of country legend Hank Snow in CMT's 2017 series Sun Records. LaFarge has played big stages like the Ryman, Red Rocks and Bonnaroo, but he's equally at home ripping it up in any small theater, nightclub or roadhouse that'll have him. With each of his albums, up to and including 2017's critically acclaimed Manic Revelations, LaFarge has evolved and reinvented himself as an artist, preferring to continually refine his sound and tinker with his approach instead of resting comfortably in one spot. "Early on, I was into leaving things open to interpretation," he says. "It was like me solo, performing as if I was a full band. Or it was me and three other guys — the South City Three — all string instruments, performing as if we had a horn section. And then I got the horn section and the drums, and everything was so loud and all the space was filled, that I had to dial it back. Maybe it's hard for the fans to keep up sometimes, but my favorite composers are the ones that you can't describe what their music is, and every single record is different from the one that preceded it." LaFarge switched gears again in 2018, uprooting himself from his longtime home of St. Louis, Missouri, and settling in Los Angeles. "People know me as being a midwestern boy," he says, "but I really needed a change of scenery, some new challenges, new inspirations, new routines, things like that. St. Louis being a small town, I was well known there. You're kind of under a microscope, people put a lot of weight on you, and some of them are looking to hate on you seemingly because you became a successful artist — you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. Out here, I'm more anonymous, and that's great. There's freaks everywhere, you know? I'm with my people now!" The West Coast has always held a special allure for LaFarge; after graduating high school, he hitchhiked to Southern California and supported himself by busking. But Los Angeles has also been the home of two of his biggest heroes: Tom Waits and Charles Bukowski. "It's kind of cool to be living where my favorite music composer is from, and my favorite poet is from," he laughs. "I'm loving hanging around this place. There are some cool ghosts here." There's also a palpable sense of freedom in L.A., something that's brought about a further recalibration of LaFarge's creative vision. "I think in some respects in the past, I was playing a character," he says. "I created that character, but then people got used to me, and they wanted me to play it; and when I didn't, they said I was out of character. Yeah, I want to create characters in my songs, but I would also like to be honest about who I am, and have my work chart the progression of that exploration. But is that even possible? I don't know. When you're changing all the time, maybe the trick is just to do whatever you can to keep the demons away." After a decade spent mostly touring, recording and touring some more, LaFarge is looking forward to easing up on the gas pedal, and taking a more considered approach to his writing. A book of poetry is in the works, something he's been wanting to do for years. "As a poet first, I've had a hard time getting my poetry into my music," he says. "The forms of American song that I've come up playing, they have distinct chord progressions and structures, and then I'm trying to fit my poetry, which is very fluid, into these boxes. It's almost like living a dual life. I'm gonna keep trying to fit my poetry into my music — but I also wonder, because poetry has become so damaged by the academic world, is it now dead in the minds of most people? So that's going to be an interesting thing to play with." There will be more Pokey LaFarge music, as well, though its sound and format have yet to be revealed. "I'm messing around with different ideas of how and when to release songs," he says. "It may be a song a week for a couple of months, or maybe some EPs. I'll be experimenting with different musicians and collaborators, different producers and backing bands, while I continue to play solo shows and write new material with my acoustic and my electric guitars. And, who knows, maybe the occasional acting thing." It's an exciting time to be Pokey LaFarge — and the next few years are going to be an exciting time to be a Pokey LaFarge fan. "You're going to hear a myriad of different styles and presentations," he promises. "Hopefully more piano, a little more electric guitar. A lot more minimalism, a lot more space between rhythm and melody. A lot more poetry. And it's going to be weirder and darker and more beautiful and sexier going forward. That is my pursuit." The Third Men Podcast is thrilled to present this extended interview with legendary recording artist Mr. Dominic Davis! Growing up in the Detroit area, Dominic and childhood pal Jack White uncovered the world of music together from attic to garage to stage. Whether it was recording in the attic as "The F*ck-Ups", or watching the Gillis brothers tear up a live set, Jack and Dominic nurtured a love for music that would lead both musicians to spectacular new heights. Though their paths diverged for a time, they found their way back together again in a big way at Third Man Records - with Dominic playing a key role in such milestone projects as the Blunderbuss tour, the Lazaretto LP and the restoration of the lost White Stripes track "City Lights" to name but a few. Dominic is one of the top bass players working in music today, lending his incredible talents not only to Third Man projects, but to The North Mississippi Allstars, the hit TV show Nashville and many, many more. You can also catch Dominic in the recent hit PBS documentary American Epic, along with its fantastic accompanying soundtrack! We cover it all, and even get some exciting, exclusive bits of information on upcoming projects to share with you the listener! So grab a stranger's hand and listen to this episode as closely as you can! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Hit the road with the Third Men Podcast as we follow along with Jack White’s first-ever solo tour, the explosive world-wide 2012 Blunderbuss tour! For this inaugural solo outing, Jack took with him missing pieces from each of his prior bands, both in song choice as well as stylistic inspiration. Never one to take it easy on himself, Jack created not one, but TWO touring bands to journey with him on the road – one all male:the Buzzards; one all female: the Peacocks. Each band rehearsed upwards of 70 songs from the Jack White catalogue, and performed varying versions of each without the aid of a set list for the better part of an entire year! It was a revolutionary idea, and helped create a unique and energetic atmosphere for a tour that no fan would soon forget. We give you all the details, plus Third Man Steven Scott stops in to share his tour memories at the Roseland ballroom in NYC…plus a rather rag’n’boney trip to Third Man Records in Nashville! The White Stripes put him on the map, but The Raconteurs cemented his status as a rock god and the Dead Weather doubled down on the gothic grunge that had been bubbling under the surface. But from mid 2010-mid 2012, we really didn't know what move was next. So from the release of the Dead Weather's Sea of Cowards, to the debut of his solo masterpiece Blunderbuss, we take an extensive look at Jack's jam-packed transformation in our very first 2-part episode. (oh the irony!)Plus, Third Woman Clara from the Jack White Hub stops in to discuss the final installment of the Sea of Cowards era: Rolling in on a Burning Tire! Loose Cannons (1990) is a “comedy” where Gene Hackman, Dan Aykroyd and Dom DeLuise go on the run, attempting to expose a conspiracy around a sex tape of Adolf Hitler. It sounds a lot better than it actually is. In the second half it’s all Jurassic World, as Harlo skypes in for our roundtable discussion of the biggest movie opening […]

Good luck next week!! Black-Eyed News: In a year of declining album sales, Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience was the biggest selling album of 2013, according to Billboard. A total of 2.43 million copies sold. While the ranking is certainly an honor for Timberlake, it's less flattering for the record industry as a whole: The 20/20 Experience was the only album to sell over 2 million in 2013, which marks the lowest top-seller in SoundScan's 22 years of tracking sales. The previous low came in 2008, with Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III selling 2.87 million copies. Rounding out the top 10 was Eminem's acclaimed The Marshall Mathers LP 2 (1.73 million), Luke Bryan's Crash My Party (1.52 million), Imagine Dragons' Night Visions (1.4 million), Bruno Mars' Unorthodox Jukebox (just under 1.4 million), Florida Georgia Line's Here's to the Good Times (1.35 million), Drake's Nothing Was the Same (1.34 million), Beyoncé's surprise LP Beyoncé (1.3 million), Blake Shelton's Based on a True Story (1.11 million) and Jay Z's app-backed Magna Carta...Holy Grail (1.1 million). What do we think this means to the future of album sales? Total sold in top 10 14.67 Million average of 1.46 million per but 7 of those albums were not even close to that number. Editorial Aside: What is to blame for the low sales? Piracy claims the record company; the artists say streaming is the villain here. But how about the cost of an album at the store. Not a digital copy but a hard copy. I have seen them for as much as $18 in the store. Also quality some of the stuff is just not that good. Back to the Numbers: The top single sales were led by a different set of artists. Robin Thicke's ubiquitous "Blurred Lines" came in at Number One with 6.5 million sales. Mackemore and Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" was a close second, with 6.15 million. The other top sellers were Imagine Dragons ("Radioactive," 5.5 million), Florida Georgia Line ("Cruise," 4.69 million), Lorde ("Royals," 4.42 million), Katy Perry ("Roar," 4.41 million), P!nk featuring Nate Ruess ("Just Give Me a Reason," 4.32 million), another from Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ("Can't Hold Us," 4.26 million), Bruno Mars ("When I Was Your Man," 3.93 million) and Rihanna ("Stay," 3.85 million). http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/justin-timberlakes-20-20-experience-tops-2013-album-sales-20140103#ixzz2pZu3Stlq Phil Everly, whose hits with his older brother, Don, as the Everly Brothers carried the close fraternal harmonies of country tradition into pioneering rock ’n’ roll, died on Friday in Burbank, Calif. He was 74. The group’s official website said he died in a hospital near his home in Southern California. His son Jason said the cause of death was complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. With songs like “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” “Cathy’s Clown,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream” and “When Will I Be Loved?,” which was written by Phil Everly, the brothers were consistent hitmakers in the late 1950s and early 1960s. They won over country, pop and even R&B listeners with a combination of clean-cut vocals and the rockabilly strum and twang of their guitars. They were also models for the next generations of rock vocal harmonies for the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Simon and Garfunkel and many others who recorded their songs and tried to emulate their precise, ringing vocal alchemy. The Everly Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in its first year, 1986. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/05/arts/music/phil-everly-half-of-pioneer-rock-duo-dies-at-74.html?hpw&rref=arts&_r=0 Blues man Tabby Thomas, a well known & widely influential Baton Rouge musician, club owner, radio DJ and recording artist, and the father of blues musician & actor Chris Thomas King, has passed away. He was 84 and just four days shy of his birthday. Born Ernest J. Thomas in Baton Rouge January 5th, 1929, Thomas owned and operated a blues club called Tabby’s Blues Box and Heritage Hall for nearly three decades until it’s closure in 2004. “There was something about Tabby’s Blues Box,” wrote Chelsea Brasted for the New Orleans Times Picayune, “An intangible quality seeped out of the joint on nights when legends were being made on its stage, solidifying its place in local music lore.” Thomas has long been one of the best known blues musicians in Baton Rouge. Having learned music in a local church Choir as a child, and following an Air Force stint, Tabby relocated to California and began a touring and recording career, notably with Hollywood Records and the well-known Excello Records label. Returning to Louisiana, Tabby’s records were quickly played on local radio on New Orleans’ WBOK. His music earned him a spot at New Orleans’ famed Dew Drop Inn venue — a premiere live blues room that was host to Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Guitar Slim and dozens more top acts of the time. He caught the attention of Louis Armstrong, who arranged for the Eric Shaw Agency to book Thomas a tour. Tabby’s son, Grammy award winner Chris Thomas King, found his first experiences at the club that he helped his father create. He signed his first recording contract with Sire Records, a subsidiary of Warner Brothers, at Tabby’s Heritage Hall. King went on to sell more than ten million records, earning a Grammy for Album of the Year for his cover of Skip James’ “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” track on the O! Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. King famously played bluesman Tommy Johnson in the film. http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/famed-baton-rouge-bluesman-passes-away/ Rolling Stone Magazine recently published a story reporting that Allman Brothers bass player Oteil Burbridge, the man who has been providing the lower end for the Allman Brothers for decades is leaving the band. Fans of the band immediately began protesting and about the shake-up. “We’re here to assure you that that is not true,” said Oteil, refuting the claim on Social Media, “and he will be playing with the Allman Brothers throughout 2014. Happy New Year and thank you to all the fans for your support!” Oteil also had this to say on his website: “For the record…. It was an amazing experience recording and playing with the Zac Brown Band and with Dave Grohl in November. It was an awesome time and a reunion of sorts for me with old friends Chris Fryar, Penn Robertson, and Eric Pretto (the drummer, bass tech and guitar tech for ZBB, respectively) who I’ve known for over a decade. I am proud to be part Zac’s record. 2014 will mark the beginning of my 16th year with the Allman Brothers and as we celebrate the bands 45th anniversary, it reminds me what a huge part of my musical life this incredible band has been. I’m really grateful and proud to be such a big part of the ABB history. And we ain’t done yet! I certainly hope to work with the Zac Brown Band again in the future. They are incredibly talented and great guys. Wherever I land in the future, I hope my fans understand that my primary concern is for the wellbeing of my family and will continue to bring you the highest level of groove and improv that I can muster.” http://www.americanbluesscene.com/2014/01/trucks-says-oteils-staying-put-despite-rolling-stone-story/ and Lastly Jack White has a new album in the works, and it looks like it could be coming out soon. In a recent chat with fans on the message board of his label, Third Man Records, White dropped the news: "I'm producing two albums this month, and finishing them," he said. "One of them is mine." Assuming White is referring to a solo album, this could mean a follow-up to 2012's Blunderbuss will be appearing shortly. In an interview with Rolling Stone last February, White mentioned that he had 20 to 25 songs already written. "It's definitely not one sound," he said of the new material. "It's definitely several. Like you heard in Blunderbuss, there's many different styles there. I don't pick my style and then write a song. I just write whatever comes out of me, and whatever style it is is what it is, and it becomes something later." http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/jack-white-finishing-up-new-album-20140105#ixzz2pZxGOBhK Blues In The Area: 1/10 FRIDAY Ronnie Earl - The Katherine Hepburn Center for the Arts (8pm) - Old Saybrook, CT Dan Stevens - Perks & Corks (9pm) - Westerly, RI Johnny Hoy & the Bluefish - Chan's (8pm) - Woonsocket, RI Blues Alley - The Mona Lisa Restaurant (8-11pm) - Wolcott, CT Eight To The Bar - The Knickerbocker Cafe (8pm) - Westerly, RI 1/11 SATURDAY The Alexis P. Blunderbuss Swan Hunt Blunderbusses are strange guns and the people who enjoy shooting them are perhaps even stranger, including me. When I first saw one advertised in Sportsman’s Guide I knew that I would need to get it and wring it out. FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP19. Jack White. 07.13.12July 9th marked the birthday for one of Detroit’s most notable musicians, a player who simultaneously revolutionized and resurrected true American Blues, but never let one type of music define who he was or who he would be collaborating with.In the documentary It Might Get Loud Jack White stated that Son Houses’s Grinnin In Your Face is his favorite song of all time. The grit and simplicity of this song may shed light on the why White uses tried and true techniques to keep his relatively fresh concepts in a lo-fi time capsule.White started banging on a drum set at age 6, and mulled around the garage rock scene of Detroit for years, contemplating where his overactive drive lead him. His Catholic upbringing would find him as an altar boy in younger years and nearly bring him to a seminary in Wisconsin, with aspirations of becoming a priest. His musical mind would eventually get the better of him when he realized that the school may not let him play his new amp in the dorms. In 1997 Jack created The White Stripes, a highly stylized two piece, with his now ex-wife Meg White, known for their simplistic writing and garage band static. The early years of the band created rumors about what the true relationship was between Jack and Meg. And in 2003 as the duo’s infamy continued to expand, Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips touched on the hype, and insanity that surrounded The White Stripes, on the song titled Thank You Jack White. Two years down the road Jack’s creativity and thirst for collaborative art would help cast the mold for The Raconteurs: a legit four piece featuring two members of the Greenhornes, bassist Jack Lawerence and precisionist Patrick Keeler. The band’s first full length was recorded in the home of the bands 4th member, Brendan Benson: a multi-instrumentalist and successful solo artist. Both Raconteurs albums claimed gold success in the UK.2009 was the year of the super group, bringing the US rock genre powerhouses like Dead By Sunrise, Atoms For Peace, Tinted Windows, and Them Crooked Vultures. Jack White was not going to be left out. Even if the band didn’t admit to being labeled as a super group it was hard to deny The Dead Weather combined the talents of Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, Allison Mosshart of The Kills and the other “Jack” Jack Lawrence. White and Allison credit Captain Beefheart as a major influence on the band’s sound as did the band I featured a couple weeks back Jukebox The Ghost. Here’s a taster of that influence. It wasn’t till his 37th year on this planet; White would use his partners in musical genius to help create his solo album Blunderbuss. This new album defines what White is through and through. The album uses almost exclusively 1st takes with limited track doubling, coupled with recording done using analog tape, and ribbon mics. The signature sound brings forth exactly what White wants. A warm tone that sounds best played from vinyl. A vinyl that can be purchased from Jack’s record store/ label 3rd Man Records. Marketing ploy or not a thank you is deserved to a man who cherishes American music at its greatest and stopped at nothing to shine a beacon on what great music sounds like and how it is created.Happy Birthday Jack White.Tracks Heard In This Podcast: Grinnin In Your Face – Son House Let’s Build A Home – The White Stripes The Hardest Button To Button – The White Stripes Thank You Jack White – The Flaming Lips Store Bought Bones – The Raconteurs Cut Like A Buffalo – The Dead Weather BlunderBuss – Jack White

In this episode I will be reviewing Jack White's debut solo album Blunderbuss.
This week Lando and I are discussing a wide range of topics, starting out with what finally put me over in deciding which TV survivalist I like better. After that, we move into the awesomely alternative Alzheimer's helmet that Terry Pratchett is using before talking about the new WETA blunderbuss and whether Steve Jobs has the right to alter the truth about his health. Finally, we discuss the big presidential inauguration and what it means to us, if anything. Enjoy!Opening Music: "Alive WIP v2" by George CarpenterClosing Music: "Blau.ton" by Rauschwerk
