Detailed Synopsis: The Theme for this show is ‘Persecution'. And in the next half an hour you will get to hear a five poem of different styles of poetry from people on this theme. There are some people, tribes, communities, all around the world which are being persecuted for different reasons, quite often because they are seen as weaker or a threat of some kind, whether the threat is religion, caste, ethnicity, their social status or the colour of their skin. And we witness this being continually repeated throughout history by people, groups, countries and nations in some way or form. Strangely enough, all of the poems I received on this theme focused on the persecution on Muslims, however I hope this show will give you a small example of the pain felt by some of those being persecuted, and perhaps even move you, or allow you to see the whole of mankind with a more compassionate heart, regardless of who they are. The first poem is from the very talented poet Sister Faiza Kiran, a truly poetical jewel with her inspiring poem from Hartlepool, titled Paradise Lost. The next poem is quite specifically about the persecution of Ahmadi Muslims, from a wonderful poetical star the acclaimed poet Zafar Bhatti from the midlands in Leamington Spa with his poem titled ‘The Silent Voice'. This is then followed by another poet also from the Midlands, from the aspiring young Sabahat Ahmad, full of talent who reads his wonderful poem titled Sunset with such admirable gallant and paints the grim reality of those being persecuted. A wonderful poem is next, about the treatment of Muslims in Palestine, a story of the bondage of its subjects by those bringing closer its frontline, from an Imam, Mansoor Clarke who is a Missionary of Islam, with his very moving poem that which would make any human very emotional. The final poem is from the acclaimed poet Muddabir Khalid who brings an inspiring style on the dire persecution of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community who are being forced to live in a state of exile, being put to trial, without release, living a life in exile for their beliefs. Are we any closer to normalizing Islam in the United States? Qasim touches on other varied topics he's well-informed on, all with eloquence and humility. How the reality of American Muslims building this country and fighting in every war needs to be more deliberately communicated; the potential positives of being trolled, which he calls collateral education; helping our nation become a more perfect union and making the American Dream accessible to all; the number of times he was pulled over by police post-9/11.… We're moved by his embodiment of humanity, present in his many, many actions, constantly asserted beliefs, and showing compassion just for compassion's sake. A sustained and compelling critique of the doubt/belief binary in the anthropology of religion and Islam, Nicholas H. A. Evans’ Far from the Caliph’s Gaze: Being Ahmadi Muslim in the Holy City of Qadian (Cornell University Press, 2020) presents a riveting ethnography of a community’s strivings to materially embody and establish the certainty of its religious identity. An organizational ethnography of the Ahmadi community in its founding city of Qadian in Panjab India, this book charts the multiple ways in which the Ahmadiyya cultivate their fidelity to the caliph that combine bureaucratic operations, polemical encounters with Muslims and non-Muslims, and the expression and dissemination of piety through technology like satellite television. In our conversation, we engage a range of themes including the Ahmadi-caliph relationship as the antidote to secular politics, “enchanting bureaucracy” and utopian counter-publics, “heroic polemicism,” the productive outcomes of ritual failures, and global outreach through technology as a mode of theological success. This lyrically written book brings together just the perfect dose and mixture of intellectual history, ethnographic brilliance, and theoretical nuance and sophistication. While centered on South Asia, its conceptual intervention in the anthropology of religion will and should spark conversations among scholars of Islam, religion, and anthropology more generally. It will also make a delightful text to teach in various undergraduate and graduate courses. SherAli Tareen is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College. His research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions and debates in early modern and modern South Asia. Ahead of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare's death, Trevor Barnes reports on the religion of Shakespeare's England, and the influence of the Bible on his language. This week's Channel 4 documentary "What British Muslims really think", has been heavily criticised by members of Muslim communities for putting across what they see as a skewed picture of Islam in Britain. The programme's executive producer Samir Shah and author and activist Shelina Janmohamed discuss. Liz Leonard examines the current religious landscape of Scotland, in light of the recent Scottish Social Attitudes survey which suggests that most people in Scotland are 'not religious'. What is it like to live in Britain as a member of the persecuted Ahmadi Muslim sect? Author Adil Khan profiles the history and beliefs of Ahmadis following the discovery of leaflets in a South London Mosque calling on them to be killed. The three Christian denominations which run the Church in Jerusalem, believed to be on the site of Jesus' tomb, have reached an agreement to carry out much-needed repair work. Archaeologist Martin Biddle explains the rich history of the shrine. Producers: Dan Tierney Peter Everett Series producer: Amanda Hancox.
