In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the goalie situation. Zach Fucale and Hunter Shepard are UFA's at the end of the season. The question of if the Bears should bring them both back is complicated. The Bears recently signed Mitchell Gibson. From Nova Caps: "The Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli is reporting that the Washington Capitals have signed goaltender prospect Mitchell Gibson to a one-year deal. Gibson is also expected to sign an amateur tryout agreement (ATO) with the Hershey Bears, which will allow him to join the team this season." Seems like a solid option for years to come. Later Dan talks about James van Riemsdyk. In a piece in the Hockey Writer's they talk about him being a viable option. Dan weighs the pros and cons and how he doesn't really fit the narrative of the team getting younger. In the final segment Dan talks about Caps prospect Henrik Rybinski and where he fits in with the Capitals long term plans. According to The Hockey Writer's "The Capitals signed Rybinski to a three-year entry-level contract in March 2022, and he has been playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hershey Bears since the start of the 2022-23 season. He has transitioned well to the professional level, with four goals and 12 assists for 16 points through 44 games, as well as a plus-5 rating and 18 penalty minutes. Brian Maclellan had a productive second day off free agency as he signs Dylan Strome to address the situation at second line center. Strome is coming off a strong year with the Chicago Blackhawks that saw him dish 22 goals and 26 assists in 69 games. Back in 2018-19, the 25-year-old had a 51-point season, followed by a 38-point seaon in 58 games in the COVID 19 shortened 2019-20 seasonIn the second segment I talk about the changes in net with Carl as we reflect on a great free agency with Brian Maclellan. Mac swung for the fences and landed the biggest goalie in free agency Darcy Kuemper. The Capitals also solidified the backup goalie situation by signing Charlie Lindgren. Charlie doesn't have a lot of NHL experience, but in his brief stint in the NHL has played very well and also performed at a high level in the AHLIn the final segment I talk about the future of the Washington Capitals. Better late than never! Me and my buddy Zach Sexton broke down each playoff series, our favourite regular season storylines and some of our expectations for this years cup run to make sure everyone goes into it primed and ready! Just two giant hockey fans gushing about the highs and lows of our respective fandoms and making sure everyone knows our picks for when they all crash and burn. I think there is a little something for everyone in this episode! If you enjoy what you hear and want to check out some of Zach's hockey writing head over to historicallyhockey.com and let him know you heard him here! Might push Monday's episode with the legend Shaun Newman to Wednesday to give you all a chance to enjoy this episode! But also might just release it Monday anyways because It's an amazing conversation I've thought about almost every day since we recorded it! It shall be a surprise for everyone (possibly including me lol) This dog is just taking up all my time!

Excellent time chatting with longtime & veteran college hockey writer Neil Koepke in this episode! Neil joined Fred Pletsch and I to talk about several topics, great listen for the college hockey fan or hockey fan in general with Neil, who has nearly 50 years of covering the sport! We started out talking about his younger years as a goalie, growing up in Cleveland, going to Ohio State as a goalie for 1 year, there he played for Harry Neale, who later in his career, spent several years as the top analyst for "Hockey Night in Canada", Neale was a founding force in Ohio State's hockey program. Later in his college years Neil transferred to the University of Detroit, it was there he started to find his way a journalist/writer covering hockey. Neil spent several years on the University of Michigan hockey beat before he started on the beat of Michigan State hockey in the mid 80's, he's still on the beat today covering Spartan hockey and college hockey! We talked about some his fondest memories of covering the Spartans, the late, great Ron Mason, his top players and moments in Spartan hockey history, and so much more in this entertaining episode!!

Since 2005, Brad Schlossman has covered North Dakota and the world of College Hockey for the Grand Forks Herald. Brad joined Fred Pletsch and I recently to chat about a wide variety of topics, first we talked about how he got his start as a journalist with the Herald, he started in 2003 and in 2005 was moved to the North Dakota hockey beat, since then, he's become an outstanding writer covering North Dakota's program extensively and one of the best in the business. We also discussed the man who previously covered North Dakota, Virg Foss, who spent a half century covering the sport, Brad shared with us the impact Virg has had and continues to have on his career. We also talked about one very memorable World Junior Hockey Tournament Brad covered, which featured him having several one on one sit down interviews with a young Alexander Ovechkin! We looked back on North Dakota's impressive 2019-2020 season, the won the NCHC Penrose Cup as the league's regular season champions, plus, some of Brad's most memorable players, coaches and games he's covered, and we also got his thoughts on 3 on 3 hockey in overtime and if oneday we see that excitement of 3 on 3 become universal in College Hockey!
