We’ve heard a lot of fun origin stories on the Proof to Product Podcast, but today’s episode with Dani Paquin, founder of the jewelry company Agapantha, is an extra sweet and serendipitous start-up story. Dani founded her jewelry company in 2004 somewhere on a dusty road as she was touring the United States as a singer-songwriter. Between tours, Dani worked at her home in Brooklyn assembling jewelry for other designers, but at that moment on the road, she finally realized she had to bring her own designs to life. So Agapantha was born and an important artistic shift was made. What does Agapantha mean? It's the first flower that Dani's grandmother taught her to say. Today, Dani pays homage to her and the inspirational women in her life by naming each collection after someone special. Her delicate, minimalist layering jewelry that is sold in boutiques around the world and Agapantha recently celebrated 15th years of business. On today's episode, Dani shares her start-up story. We talk about how she slowly and thoughtfully grew her jewelry line over the years and how she scaled production for a handmade product. Dani also encourages all of us to just keep going - because you never know where things will lead. ON TODAY’S EPISODE: How Dani got started making jewelry What inspires her work The way Agapantha has evolved over the years How frequently Dani releases new pieces Pain points of catering to both retail and wholesale The first role Dani hired for The importance of training and trusting your team How Dani shifted her business model and scaled up What she learned from 15 years of entrepreneurship Beneficial mistakes and resources that helped Dani get where she is today Advice for individuals just starting out KEY TAKE-AWAYS: “Let's be real. We're all trying to do the job of about one million people.” - Dani Paquin “I've been working really hard to find great people that I can trust and I can give things away. To try to start focusing more on what I'm really good at and what I want to do.” - Dani Paquin “There are times where even if we have a team, we still have to get our hands dirty. It's still our company. We have to do the work.” - Katie Hunt “It took me a long time to be okay with having someone in my space that I didn’t feel like I needed to talk to or feel like I had to entertain. That's a big change when you're used to working alone.” - Dani Paquin “Manufacturing is one of those big pivots decisions. It's an opportunity for growth but it can be scary.” - Kaite Hunt “I'm in the midst of my first project where I'm manufacturing overseas for a much larger scale project than we could do on our own here. It's really exciting and really scary. But I feel like a doorway into something new.” - Dani Paquin “Ultimately it always comes back to how much I love what I do and I don't want to do anything else. Just to just keep going, one day at a time. One foot in front of the other. You do your best.” - Dani Paquin “Once you embrace making mistakes and failing, not as a failure, but as an opportunity for growth, then you know what not to do. You have to get through that In order to go farther. There's no way to do it without that.” - Dani Paquin “If you meet someone and you have an instinct about them, that you're not going to get paid or something's off, trust your instincts. Don't be in a store just to be in a store.” - Dani Paquin “We're artists and designers and that doesn't mean we’re bad at business. But often it means that the business side is not what we’re focusing on.” - Dani Paquin “It's always nice to have an outside perspective weighing in on your business decisions because it's so personal to you. It's so close to you. It is your art.” - Katie Hunt “It's okay to say "no" to some things that don't feel right. Keep going. Or know when to quit.” - Dani Paquin LINKS Website: http://www.agapantha.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agapanthajewelry/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/agapanthajewelry/ SUBSCRIBE To subscribe on iOS, go to the iTunes page and subscribe to Proof to Product. Two episodes ago I released the podcast that made me feel the most vulnerable so far… Andrew Eggelton and I discussed all of the ways in which we block ourselves from allowing the love we crave into our lives. In that episode Andrew and I talked about the love that we feel for each other, and in THIS episode I talk to Andrew’s partner Dani Strong about how she felt when she heard her partner and another woman talking about the love they feel for each other. In an old paradigm of relationships, Dani could have seen me as competition. She doesn’t. She sees me as someone who contributes to the happiness of her partner – and that makes her happy. This episode is the first time Dani and I have ever spoken (besides online messages to organise the podcast). Together we have a completely unscripted, even-we-don’t-know-what-we’ll-say discussion about how Dani felt when she listened to the episode, the new paradigm of inviting unconditional love into relationships, and the inner work it takes to open to this abundance of love. Dani Strong is a holistic nutrition coach who helps women fuel their lives and achieve their goals through making loving choices around food and lifestyle – and she definitely embodies this commitment to love over fear. This episode was so potent it transformed an area of my life and helped me find more love where I had been struggling to for weeks. I know you will feel the transmission of this new paradigm around relationships too. Enjoy! • How Dani felt as she listened to the podcast where her partner Andrew and I talked about our love for each other • Why we’re so afraid to hear our own guidance • How Dani defines romantic love, and how Kiara is questioning it all • How we are all trained (particularly women) to see getting married as the end goal for happiness – and how we are now entering a new paradigm of relationships that’s based on unconditional love – if we choose it • Mine and Dani’s experience with jealousy, and how to release it • Why taking the barriers and conditions off love actually creates more love inside of romantic relationships • How speaking our feelings and experiences as they come up actually diffuses the triggers and takes the power out of old patterns • How to speak truthfully without allowing the fear to take over • The one tool that Kiara uses to feel grounded in every new experience and path outside of her comfort zone • How we create unnecessary and unhealthy pressure in our romantic relationships by blocking off love in other relationships • Why if you really love someone you will want them to make the choices that will serve them most – even if that’s not being with you • The break-down of the old need to compete with other women and the welcoming in of sisterhood and more love • The power of asking yourself ‘how do I feel when I believe this thought?’ to guide you to always choose love • An energetic transmission that feels like an un-picking of the threads of our resistances and conditions that we place on love in the old paradigm JOIN THE TRIBE – Head over to https://www.facebook.com/groups/lightworkersrising/ to join a community and sacred space for lightworkers. Join the conversation under the podcast post to tell us what resonated for you, and ask any questions you have for Kiara and her guests. Untangled | stories about untangling from society's giant rule book
Dani Gallagher is the folk herbalist behind Roaming Soul Apothecary, a collective of wildcrafted plant medicine. Dani says her untangling began in her late teens when she became sick with a mysterious illness. Passed around from doctor to doctor to doctor for over a year, nobody could tell Dani what was wrong. It was an encounter with an herbalist in Dani’s local town who introduced her to the world of plant medicine and helped Dani to slowly begin to heal. Listen in as Dani and I explore: + The story of leaving her job, joining a local community farm and remembering her connection to nature. + Her newest project – The Wild Grown Bus – where Dani is converting an old school bus into a full time tiny house and apothecary. + How Dani began to break down inner walls to hear and feel her true self. + How fear of the unknown can stop us from connecting to who we truly are and what we truly desire. + Monetary sacrifice in the Untangling journey. RESOURCES + Ignite: Podcasting for Changemakers – the doors to Ignite are now open. + The Art of Money, Bari Tessler + Roaming Soul Apothecary – Dani’s online shop + The Wild Grown Bus Go Fund Me page + Join the Untangled Community Facebook group – a movement of women supporting each other to untangle themselves and remember their gifts. ABOUT DANI GALLAGHER Dani Gallagher is the folk herbalist behind Roaming Soul Apothecary, a collective of wildcrafted plant medicine respectively harvested with the Earth’s rhythms. She travels along the Missouri, Mississippi and Illinois Rivers in the Midwest Heartland collecting plants, wildcrafting medicine, and working as a shepherdess and consultant with local folk’s animal herds using natural rearing methods. She is often found in the middle of a goat herd, out in a field or garden somewhere, tucked inside a beehive, or set up with her apothecary in her tent at local community events talking deep conversations. It was through these conversations that she felt pulled to start The Full Moon Tribe, a monthly women’s circle nested on a bluff over a mighty river that connects women to their wild nature through plants, storytelling, rhythm and cycles of the moon. She has a deep love and respect for intuitive guidance, protecting wild places, and this ever evolving plant medicine journey which proves more exciting, beautiful, and full of light with every step. Her work with women and the healing power of plants is deepening further still while she is renovating a school bus into a project she calls The Wild Grown Bus. The bus itself will be converted into a full time tiny house and apothecary designed to spend the next two years traveling and continuing working and collecting stories with herbalists, healers, crones, midwives, land stewards, and beekeepers. You can stay up to date on her projects by signing up for her newsletter on her website and by following along with her stories on Instagram page.
