Today's conversation is one of my favorite in recent memory. I have the privilege of speaking with 26-year-old track and field star Gabbi Jennings. Gabbi is from Slidell, Louisiana, where she attended First Baptist Christian School. Gabbi notched 44 state titles in Track and Cross Country during her time there. Yes, you read that right. FORTY FOUR. Gabbi then competed at Furman University and was a three-time All-American. During her time at Furman she had PRs of 2:04.66 in the 800m; 4:12.60 in the 1500m; 4:37.46 in the Mile; 15:33.59 in the 5k in track; and 16:55.1 in the 5k in Cross Country.  Among her notable achievements in college include qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries in an unprecedented four events (800m, 1500m, 5k, 3k Steeplechase). Gabbi came in 20th at the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in the Mile. She graduated with a degree in Communication in 2020. Gabbi would go on to sign a professional contract with Team Boss and eventually Adidas. In 2022, at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she came in 4th in the Steeplechase, running a new PR of 9:25.05. She also represented the United States in 2022 at the NACAC Championships winning the gold in the Steeplechase. Most recently, she ran a 9:07.70 in August at a Diamond League event in Rome.  In today's conversation, Gabbi and I dive deep into her backstory, how she won 44 state-titles, what winning her first one as a 5th grader meant, her years at Furman and how they shaped her, how she's striving for more in this next stage of her professional career, learning under Emma Coburn, her thoughts and ambitions for the future, and much more. This one was fun, deep, full of wisdom, all the things that make a great podcast. Lace-up your shoes, throw in the AirPods, and be blessed by the stories and wisdom of Gabbi Jennings. Tap into the Gabbi Jennings Special.   If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! I would also appreciate it if you share it with your friend who you think will benefit from it.  If this episode blesses you, please share it with a friend! “For me, the most important thing is practicing winning and practicing trying to win. Because at the end of the day, PRs are awesome and running super fast is great, but people aren't going to say, ‘Oh, well, 9:03, the third fastest time.' They're going to say ‘Val won,' right? And so for me, I just want to try to win. That's all I care about. I don't even care if we run slow because I just want to win.” Valerie Constien was on the show about two months ago so if you haven't heard that episode, I think it sets thighs up perfectly for more context on her comeback from a torn ACL last year. I enjoyed hearing from the listeners that they felt more invested in Val's comeback and were overjoyed to see her running well at the Prefontaine Classic and at the Trials knowing more about her. At the Trials, Val put together one of the best races of the entire 10 days. She won the women's steeplechase in 9:03 – which moved her to No. 3 on the all-time list behind Courtney Frerichs and Emma Coburn. The whole race was epic and I'd encourage people to watch it on YouTube. Val qualified for her second U.S. Olympic team. She will be joined in Paris by Courtney Wayment and Marisa Howard. In this episode, we unpack that U.S. Olympic Trials final and then look ahead toward Paris, where Val is thinking that she has a shot at a medal. Emma Coburn is only 33 years old, but sports a running resume that's hard to match. She has won 10 National Championships in the 3000-meter steeplechase. It almost seems that USATF should rename the event the “Emma Coburn Steeplechase.” Coburn has also won an Olympic bronze medal, and World Championships gold. Her husband, Joe Bosshard, is now her coach, and also coach to a small but select elite group training in Boulder under the name Team Boss. Unfortunately, Coburn sustained a serious injury in an early-2024 competition, and required ankle surgery. That means she'll miss this year's Olympic Track Trials and the Olympic Games in Paris.  Bad luck for sure. But also a good position from which to discuss the inevitable high and lows of global racing, which Emma does in this podcast. She also talks about: # Her dog Arthur, and how he got that name in honor of the great New Zealand coach, Arthur Lydiard. # How she was born and raised in a small, high-altitude Colorado town, and spent her youth pursuing various outdoor activities. (Sorta like a young Kenyan.) # How she ran her first steeplechase only because her father insisted she enter a couple of events to justify their lengthy car drive to the meet # What she learned from her college coaches at the University of Colorado # Why she decided to be coached by her husband, the person “who knows the most about me” # How she's dealing emotionally (and financially) from the missed Olympic opportunity this year # Why she plans to be a steeplechase runner forever, rather than switching to another eventYou can learn more about Emma Coburn by following her on Instagram. "That Olympic stamp on my running resume didn't really change anything. That's why 2022 was so hard for me. I had built up these expectations and I felt that I still had to prove to myself because it seemed like it wasn't enough. That pressure didn't bode well for me. I suffered injuries and sickness...At the end of the day, World Championships and Olympics are just another race. If you're racing just to make the team, you're not going to be happy because someone else could get that spot. That's when I changed my mindset. I don't know if you've seen the show Fallout but in the first episode the ghoul says, 'I do this shit for the love of the game.' That's kind of how I feel." Val Constien is a professional runner for Nike and was a member of the 2021 Olympic team in the steeplechase. We had her on the show in the spring of 2021 and it was a memorable episode because she announced herself to the U.S. as a contender to make the team and then backed it up at the Trials. Following the Games, she remained unsponsored for more than a year. We talk about how Tokyo didn't ultimately change a whole lot for her but her passion for the sport remained. She won the 2023 U.S. Indoor 3000m title and then signed a contract with Nike. However, in her first race in the pro kit, she tore her ACL at the Doha Diamond League and that 2023 season was a wrap. She underwent bilateral ACL reconstruction and thought maybe she wouldn't race again until 2025. Things quickly changed and she accelerated through her recovery and is back to racing. In her first steeplechase race in a year, she went on to win the Sound Running Track Fest in 9:27.22. That's her fastest steeple opener. She's now back in the conversation to make the Olympic team in the steeplechase since it's a bit wide open without Emma Coburn. I think you might find someone to root for in Val after this conversation. We sat in a stew of uncertainty before recording this awesome (and healing) episode! The main training topic was a pair of studies looking at longevity outcomes in serious athletes. Extra-hard training seems to have longevity benefits compared to general population lifestyles, contrary to some warnings you might hear! Let's all plan on doing uphill treadmill runs in the nursing home. The big conversation was in the spirit of sharing all of the ups and downs of life. TW: deep discussions of pregnancy uncertainty. Megan courageously shared her current health status, and how she is thinking about vulnerability in a tough time. Over the last 4 years of this podcast, we have opened up about everything, and our lives have opened up with so much love as a result. We got this, whatever "this" ends up being, even if it takes a while. And we discussed so many of our favorite topics! Our theory is that talking about interesting things (and making jokes) is restorative. Other topics: Conan O'Brien's commitment to the bit, how the new Jim Walmsley video played a role in our weekend, fitness return after David's accident, caffeinated gels and fueling workouts, AI bots and how we think it may change human interaction as we know it, a new study on sodium bicarbonate and the placebo effect, the Cocodona 250 and multi-day ultras, Zwift's price increases, Emma Coburn's toughness, and hot takes. There may even be a poetry reading at the end. Stick around to find out... If you dare! Welcome back to more than running with Dana. I'm your host Dana Giordano, and on this show, I talk to the women in and around the running community who inspire me daily. I started this podcast when I was running professionally and I felt like the deeper stories of women were not being amplified. Stay for real conversations about confidence, mental health, body image, motivation, and of course, running. This episode of More Than Running is supported by New Balance. This is a mini-series featuring New Balance's Stolen Starts ambassadors and Team New Balance athletes. This episode was recorded back in December but was postponed due to personal events for our guests. I have often felt like the ends of our running community have felt so separate and what better way to celebrate women in running by round table conversations with the women making change within their communities and reaching new heights on the professional track circuit. On the community end of the spectrum are the women of The Stolen Starts, a women's running collective started in 2021. 10 ambassadors make up The Stolen Starts and include women from London, South Korea, Berlin, LA, Paris, and more. Each woman in the collective was selected because they are each powerful advocates for specific causes in their respective communities. In this episode, we meet Elodie Watrin a talented musician from Paris who uses her platform to promote sustainable practices. On the other end of the running spectrum and the world, we met Emma Coburn, Olympic Bronze medalist and 10x USA National Champion in the Steeplechase. Emma Coburn is also highly passionate about sustainability and shares her outlook on how to be connected to her own environment. Over the next 45 minutes, you will hear an incredible conversation about sustainability, running, community, and more. It's like going on a run with your favorite people. Elodie and Emma are both more than running, and I hope you enjoy this series! MTR is a CITIUS Mag podcast and is edited by Mike Zurolo.

On this special bonus episode of More Than Running, I chat with 5x World Championship qualifier Molly Huddle about everything she is excited about for Eugene 22. We primarily cover women's distance events with a heavy bias toward the hometown, our team, Team USA! Molly competed in the World Championships in 2011 Daegu 5k, 2013 Moscow 5k, 2015 Beijing 10k, 2017 London 10k, and 2019 Doha 10k. Molly's decade of dominance was briefly paused due to the birth of her first child Josephine this past April. Molly in her words is a "track nerd" and has been enjoying this season off the track by being a fan and providing insider knowledge on social media. In addition to new motherhood, Molly also launched a book this year How She Did It with Sara Slattery about 50 inspirational women in running, many of who are competing at the World Championships. Molly is also the host of the Keeping Track podcast and is an advocate for all things parity and equality in women's sports. I am already calling myself out about the goof of missing the women's steeplechase smh. However, we are in good hands with Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs, and Courtney Wayment. Molly and I needed another hour to record! I hope you all enjoy this preview and are getting excited about the World Championships starting on FRIDAY. ▶ Follow Dana: Twitter | Instagram | Tiktok ▶ Follow Molly: Twitter | Instagram | SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS Hayward Magic: @HaywardMagic is the Instagram home for the true track & field diehards, dreamers and fans. “I do enjoy watching other 1500m runners who have done other special things over the years and trying to learn from that – not necessarily copy it but learn to emulate the patience. That's sometimes challenging. It's a lot of instinct. I had race instinct before but I didn't have fitness. How I raced at USAs is not that abnormal in how I went about the race but now I have the fitness to finish it.” The guest for this episode is U.S. Olympian and New Balance 1500m specialist Cory McGee. She and I go way back to when I first started covering the sport and I'm stunned it's taken me this long to get her on. I was with her when she made the U.S. team for the 2013 World Championships but needed to hit the qualifying time. I watched it happen in Europe that summer and it's been so cool to see her not just stick with the sport through some rough patches but figure out how to breakthrough and make teams again. She qualified for last year's Tokyo Olympics and fulfilled a lifelong dream. This year, she backed it up by making the 1500m team for the World Championships. She's got a personal best of 4:00 for the 1500 meters and 1:59 for 800 meters. You'll hear how her mindset has changed to cement the fact that she belongs in the Team USA kit and is ready to contend against the world's best. Plus, we also chat about this thought I've had after USAs on how Emma Coburn's experience, mentorship and skill set helps the women around her on Team Boss. SUPPORT THE SPONSORS GARMIN: Music. "I'm excited to just put myself in it and be a part of it and give myself a chance. I think incredible things happen when you believe in yourself and stay in the here and now and give yourself the chance." On June 11, 2022, Brigham Young University graduate Courtney Wayment Smith made NCAA history. Competing at NCAA Championships, she ran the 3000m steeplechase in 9:16 — not only taking a commanding win, but breaking the collegiate national record (previously held by now-Olympian Courtney Frerichs) in the process. That time also put her at #5 on the all-time U.S. women's steeplechase list, behind Frerichs, Emma Coburn, Colleen Quigley, and Jenny Simpson. To celebrate, Courtney signed with an agent (Ray Flynn) and signed her first professional contract with On! The icing on the cake: Courtney competed at USATF Outdoor Championships this past weekend, where she finished second in the 3000m steeplechase, earning her a spot on Team USA heading into next month's World Athletics Championships. Needless to say, it's been an exciting summer for Courtney, who lives in Provo, UT, and will continue training with her BYU coach Diljeet Taylor.
