The Ilkley Moor alien photo, taken in 1987 by retired police officer Philip Spencer, is one of the UK's and the world's most debated pieces of alleged extraterrestrial evidence. While walking across Ilkley Moor in West Yorkshire, Spencer claimed to have seen a strange, small humanoid figure. He snapped a photo just before the being fled, and shortly after, he reported witnessing a silent, flying craft in the sky. The blurry image shows a figure with an odd, non-human shape, which many interpret as an alien. The case is made even stranger by Spencer's claim of missing time and a subsequent experience of hypnosis, during which he recalled being taken aboard a craft. Despite skepticism and controversy, the photo remains a staple in UFO lore . . . but is it real?-----------------Head to the Strange Places home website, asylum817.com to keep up with all things Strange Places, as well as the host. This week, the boys are really happy to have the company of Chris Mullin - journalist responsible for exposing the false convictions of the Birmingham Six , author and ex-labour MP. We all know the tropes - Geoffrey Boycott incarnate, ferret-leggers and folk singers gambolling about Ilkley Moor without appropriate headgear - but why is Yorkshire God's Own County? Exiled Yorkshireman Rick Broadbent sets out to find out whether Yorkshireness is something that can be summed up and whether it even matters in a shrinking world. Along the way he meets rock stars, ramblers and rhubarb growers as he searches for answers and a decent cup of tea. Now Then is a biographical mosaic of a place that has been victimised and stereotyped since the days of William the Conqueror. Incorporating social history, memoir and author interviews, Now Then is not a hagiography. Broadbent visits the scenes of industrial neglect and forgotten tragedy, as well as examining the truth about well-known Yorkshire figures and institutions. Featuring Kes, the Sheffield Outrages and the most controversial poem ever written, as well as a heroic dog, a lost albatross and a stuffed crocodile, Now Then is an affectionate but unsparing look at a county, its inhabitants and their flinty vowels. This is a funny, wise and searching account of a place that claims to have given the world its first football club and England its last witch-burning. It does include cobbles, trumpets and stiff-necked, wilful obstinacy, but it is also about ordinary Yorkshire and its extraordinary lives. https://www.waterstones.com/book/now-then/rick-broadbent/9781838957360 Eamonn: Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism as I understand it. Thus wrote Orwell following his experiences as a militiaman in the Spanish Civil War, chronicled in Homage to Catalonia. Here he brings to bear all the force of his humanity, passion and clarity, describing with bitter intensity the bright hopes and cynical betrayals of that chaotic episode: the revolutionary euphoria of Barcelona, the courage of ordinary Spanish men and women he fought alongside, the terror and confusion of the front, his near-fatal bullet wound and the vicious treachery of his supposed allies. A firsthand account of the brutal conditions of the Spanish Civil War, George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia includes an introduction by Julian Symons in Penguin Modern Classics. https://www.waterstones.com/book/homage-to-catalonia/george-orwell/julian-symon/9780141183053 Chris Mullin: How they broke Britain by James O'Brien Something has gone really wrong in Britain. Bold and incisive as ever, James O'Brien reveals the shady network of influence that has created a broken Britain of strikes, shortages and scandals. He maps the web connecting dark think tanks to Downing Street, the journalists involved in selling it to the public and the media bosses pushing their own agendas. Over ten chapters, each focusing on a particular person complicit in the downfall, James O'Brien reveals how a select few have conspired - sometimes by incompetence, sometimes by design - to bring Britain to its knees. https://www.waterstones.com/book/how-they-broke-britain/james-obrien/9780753560341

One midsummer's morning, c. 1820, William Butterfield opened the door to the Wells, a healing spring on the edge of Ilkley Moor. He was startled to find a band of little creatures dressed in green from head to foot, who were noisily disporting themselves in the water. As he watched, they scurried over the eight-foot-high wall, and disappeared. Is there any way to determine exactly what William Butterfield saw that morning? Were they insects, lizards, or, as William believed, fairies? Simon and Chris investigate. In the early morning of December 1, 1987, Phillip Spencer was on a leisurely stroll through the moors between his home and that of his father-in-law. An amateur photographer in his early retirement, Phillip was determined to make the most of the frosty one-hour journey. It was a perfect opportunity to snap some shots of the famously beautiful sunrise over the fog-blanketed bog. He had no idea that he was headed straight into what has become one of the most revered and controversial alien encounters in UK history.TAKE MORE THAN ONE PICTURE!Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling is created for adult audiences only. UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young
In the 1980’s, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park of northern England, a retired policeman had a very unsettling experience. On December 1st 1987, retired policeman Phillip Spencer set out on a walk across a windswept Ilkley Moors in the early hours of the morning, taking with him a camera in the hope of photographing the ‘strange lights’ that had recently been reported in the area. As well as it being dark, the moor was swirling with mist and Mr Spencer doubted that he would get any pictures at all, despite having loaded his camera with ultra-light-sensitive film. Suddenly, to his immense surprise, he spotted a human-like creature ahead of him in the gloom. He clicked the camera and duly photographed one of the most talked-about photographs in the history of unexplained phenomena. Although very blurred, the photograph appears to show a ‘humanoid’ figure over 1 metre high, that bears an uncanny resemblance to the ‘Greys’ of UFO legend. Spencer claimed that he ran after the creature, which entered a ‘dome-shaped’ craft that rose rapidly into the sky before he could get a shot of the craft. Spencer remained adamant that what he had seen was an alien, and donated the photo to UFO watchers. Analysis carried out at the Kodak laboratories in Hemel Hempstead suggested that the picture had not been interfered with in any way, but a later computer analysis of the photograph by US Navy expert Dr Bruce Maccabee was inconclusive. When the retired policeman took the photograph on the Moors, of the strange ‘human’ looking creature and saw the craft, he believed the incident lasted merely a couple of minutes, yet when he reached his father-in-law’s house in the village, his intended destination, he noticed that the village clock was an hour fast, or so he thought. It wasn’t – and he appeared to be have ‘lost’ some time. It was this which led him to suspect something else had happened to him after seeing the strange figure on the gloomy Moors. He suspected it was possible he had been abducted. In fact, he would later claim that he had indeed been abducted by an alien craft. When he walked across the moor that early morning, he had with him a compass to help him find his way, and through the gloomy fog he saw the strange-looking being ahead of him on the slopes of the moor. Intrigued, and too surprised to feel any fear, he found himself running toward it, trying to get closer and make out what it was, and it was then that he realized there was a flying craft of some sort, with a dome on top of it, rising up from the moor. It disappeared from sight within seconds however, and the unidentified creature was gone too. He hung around for some time, hoping that both would return so that he could figure out what it was he had just witnessed but neither returned and so he made his way to the village. His compass however was now of no use to him – it was pointing south now instead of north and when he got to the village, his watch said a different time to the village clock. He had lost an hour of time. The photograph that Spencer took was first analysed by a wildlife expert. He concluded that whatever was in the photograph was not any known animal. There was no way to ascertain what the creature in the photo was however. It was dark and quite blurry given the conditions of that morning but analysis of the image in the photo concluded that the strange figure hadn’t been superimposed or added in later, and indeed the photo had not been tampered with at all. It was after this odd encounter, that the policeman began to experience strange dreams at night. It was this that led him to undergo hypnotic regression, organised through the researcher Peter Hough, to try to get to the bottom of what had happened to him on the moor. A Dr Jim Singleton conducted the session and surprisingly it seemed that from Spencer’s recall, his encounter with the creature came after his abduction, and indeed, in his words, the creature was “waving goodbye to him” when he ...
Hello people, Welcome to episode 33 of the when in Yorkshire Podcast - this is a special one - the first episode recorded in front of a live audience at the Podcast Social Club in thirsk. It was great chat and a real education for me in to the world of brewing and I got taste some the brewery’s beers which I can honestly say we’re all very tasty however my favourite being the American pale ale; Hendrix which Luke gives a nice insight into. Now once you’ve listened to myself and Luke chat about his history with beer and brewing not just in ilkley but across the world - then why not get along to the ilkley brewery on 6th December for their winter social event where they will have 20 of their beers on offer to sample. Tickets start from £5 and include a beer and go up to £15 which can include food and a beer. I’m very excited to get along so check out https://www.ilkleybrewery.co.uk/event/winter-social/ and grab your tickets I’ll see you there. We do discuss some the beers and a description of each is here: HENDRIX - AMERICAN PALE ALE Clean and fresh, the American way. Brewed with oats to soften the brazen hoppy edge. Big citrus flavours, with background tropical fruitiness and a slight piney bitterness. HANGING STONE - OATMEAL STOUT Rich and creamy, with a bitter finish of forest fruits and coffee. Aromas of chocolate and smoke. Named after Celtic runes scattered across Ilkley Moor. VIRGIN MARY - ALCOHOL FREE PALE Mary Jane re-imagined. For that time when you want a beer, but don’t want to “drink”. When you want maximum flavour, minimum guilt. Low carb, low calorie and alcohol free. Did you know that a ripe banana can have 0.5% alcohol in it? MARY CHRISTMAS - SPICED AMBER ALE An Amber ale infused with spice and all things nice. Brewed with dried vine fruit, orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg and molasses, this is simply Christmas in a glass.

In this episode of the Scarecast, we will be going over three cases: **************************************** Dolly's Dip & The Death of Regena Dolly Young (1:05) In 1984, The Los Angeles Times did a story about a horrible accident involving 48-year-old, Regena “Dolly” Young on Disneyland’s ‘Matterhorn. One day, on the attraction, Regena fell off of her bobsled and was fatally trampled by an incoming bobsled. An analysis of the incident revealed that an unbuckled seat belt was the main issue that could have brought about the accident. It is still unclear whether the seatbelt trouble was caused by a ride malfunction or something that Regena intentionally did, which some reports claim could have been done to help out her child who was also on the ride. What is clear is that while on the ride, Regena stood up as the bobsled sloped downward when there was another track overhead. This sudden drop flung Regena upward, causing her head to smash into the track up above, which threw her out of her sled onto the track it was riding on. When she landed, she was still alive but unconscious, but then about thirty seconds later another bobsled came speeding along and ran her over. She was instantly killed and supposedly wound up lodged in the structure so tightly that the track had to be taken apart to get her out. This accident became so notorious, that the place where Regena died was coined “Dolly’s Dip”, based off of her nickname. Ever since she died, it became evident that the ghost of “Dolly” started to haunt the Matterhorn. Many people reported they frequently saw her ghost and heard its eerie wails throughout the attraction, specifically in a large cavernous area near the center of the ride. **************************************** Harold The Doll (5:54) Greg Mishka first posted his doll, Harold, on eBay back in 2004. Greg had been pursuing a career as a filmmaker at the time and was adamant to fully disclose the experiences he had with the doll to potential buyers. He explained that ever since he bought the doll from a flea market in Florida, his life had been turned upside down and flooded with bad luck. Greg’s cat mysteriously died, his girlfriend broke up with him, and he would constantly have migraines. After he was told by a priest to burn Harold, Greg attempted to set the doll alight, but it simply wouldn’t burn. Instead, the doll was put in a small wooden coffin and Greg decided to store it in his basement. Unfortunately, he started to hear the voices of children playing in his basement. The eBay listing quickly gained a lot of traction. Many websites published articles discussing Greg and Harold, forums would discuss them, and at one point the Coast to Coast radio show, hosted by Art Bell, spoke about the doll. Suspicions surrounding Harold started to grow, even more so when a video was uploaded to the internet. In this video, viewers can see the doll’s arm and mouth moving. Greg claims that the doll spoke and said the word “Harold”, which is why he decided to give it that name. At first, Greg had hoped to just make a little extra cash from selling the doll, but with all the attention it was receiving, more and more bids were being made. **************************************** The Ilkley Moor Alien (15:54) In 1987, a metropolitan policeman in London quit his job of four years in order to move closer to his wife’s family. The man went by the fictitious name, Philip Spencer, and that year, he moved to the West Yorkshire area of Ilkley Moor with his wife and child. Later that year, on the morning of December 1st, at around 7:15 am, Spencer went out on a walk to visit his in-law’s. It was particularly dreary and overcast that morning, and Spencer would have to cross the Ilkley Moor to reach his destination. Spencer had heard tales of mysterious lights that had been seen around Ilkley Moor, so he brought along his camera just in case. He also took his compass with him, to help with navigating through the early day fog. It had been a few months since Spencer started living there, so he prepared for any sudden mist or rain, which was characteristic of the area. As he traveled through the moor, Spencer decided to take a shortcut, which led him up a steep slope and past a group of trees. When he got close to the trees, he noticed a barely audible humming noise that he assumed came from an unseen aircraft above the fog. Unexpectedly, something darted past Spencer’s field of vision and he turned to check it out. At about 30 feet away, Spencer saw a small green creature that was around four feet tall. The creature proceeded speedily through the trees, and the bewildered Spencer shouted “Hey” at it, expecting to figure out its identity. In response, the little being turned toward him and waved. It was then that Spencer remembered his camera, and he swiftly took it out and photographed the creature. The creature then continued onward up a slope that led to a quarry at its summit. Spencer on impulse followed the peculiar being, curious to find out more about it. As he neared the end of the path, he suddenly froze in astonishment at what appeared in front of him. Spencer observed a large silver object that rose from the moor; it looked like two saucers conjoined at the edges with a domed top. On top of the dome, there was a white cube with a pattern of holes carved into it. Spencer then noticed the humming sound he heard earlier, was coming from the craft, and now blared loudly around him. Regrettably, the shock of everything prevented him from capturing a photo before the object disappeared into the sky. ...................#.92................ By Elder Almeida Depression Depression is running through my head. These thoughts make me think of death, A darkness which blanks my mind. A walk through the graveyard, what can I find? Black shadows walk in between the graves. How many lives have not been saved? Six feet under, if not more, How I'd like to go down and explore The feeling of lying in a box. I can't get out; is it locked? Is it day or is it night? Are birds singing or have bats taken to flight? I know one day this is where I'll go. Am I afraid? I don't think so! Will I be able to explore the feeling of death After I've taken my last breath? Or will I be a shadow in between the graves? Will I know how many lives have not been saved? After this life is there another one? With a different moon and a different sun. I won't go to hell as I'm already there, A place full of sadness, a place full of despair. So there's nothing to live for, no future, no past, So I might as well end it, end this life at last.
