Mike and I had a great time talking to Bill Summers (who was in Herbie Hancock's band The Headhunters)! We talk about various drums, his first meeting with Herbie Hancock, and the famous sound Bill created for one of the best known Jazz songs ever ... called Watermelon Man... Bill even demonstrates for us how the sound was created. About Bill: During the 1990s, Summers played with Los Hombres Calientes along with co-leader of the group, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and Jason Marsalis. However, Summers has a much longer musical career, often working behind the scenes on film scores for various movies such as The Color Purple and the television miniseries Roots with Quincy Jones. He also played with Herbie Hancock during The Headhunters years, and is mentioned in passing by the liner notes of The Headhunters' 2003 release Evolution Revolution as contributing to that recording. Check out the Headhunters newest album (sections of 4 of the new songs can be heard on our podcast) THE HEADHUNTERS - Speakers in the House released in November 2022: Speakers In The House is the legendary jazz-funk ensemble's first new album in 11 years. Co-lead by percussionist Bill Summers and drummer Mike Clark with support from NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison on alto saxophone, The Headhunters latest studio effort arrives just in time to celebrate this American music institution's 50th anniversary in 2023, having formed around Herbie Hancock's classic recording, Head Hunters, in 1973. An eight-track set available on Ropeadope Records, highlights from Speakers In The House include the New Orleans' second-line grooves of "Rocking At The Mole House," the world music-influenced jazz-fusion of "Kongo Square" and a modern post-bop re-imagination of the classic Headhunters' composition "Actual Proof," first released on their 1974 album, Thrust. Joining Summers, Clark and Harrison for the recording are keyboardist Stephen Gordon and bassist Reggie Washington plus special guests Jerry Z on organ, One Drop aka Scott Roberts on drums, Fode Sissoko on Kora and Ashlin Parker on trumpet. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site) Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. In the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen tremendous movement to defund the police and move into communities and economies of care across the country. This is long, long, overdue, yet we notice some real resistance from those who are just beginning to get involved with this work when it comes to imagining a world without the police. However, at this point, can any of us look to the world and feel confident that the police care about us? This week we’re re-releasing our episode with Mariame Kaba on Moving Past Punishment. Mariame joins us for an expansive conversation on Transformative Justice, community accountability, criminalization of survivors, and freedom on the horizon. We invite you to take a listen to this episode this week as a resource to feel empowered to further conversations on abolition, the movement to defund the police, and the violent and oppressive history of policing against our Black, Indigenous, and brown relatives, as well as to hopefully find the organizations in your community that have been doing this work since the beginning. Mariame Kaba is an organizer, educator and curator who is active in movements for racial, gender, and transformative justice. She is the founder and director of Project NIA, a grassroots organization with a vision to end youth incarceration. She has co-founded multiple organizations and projects over the years including We Charge Genocide, the Chicago Freedom School, the Chicago Taskforce on Violence against Girls and Young Women, Love and Protect and most recently Survived and Punished. Music by Wyclef Jean, Jason Marsalis and Irvin Mayfield. Visit our website at forthewild.world for the full episode description, references and action points.
On this week’s episode, we explore the importance of place and placemaking with guest Teju Adisa-Farrar. Teju begins this conversation by sharing how the exploration of human geographies encourages us to think about and reclaim our understanding of the environment, community and power. How have spaces been historically weaponized against us? How can we remake our shared places so that they are in alignment with our values? Teju is a Jamaican-American writer, poet and geographer. Her work centers on climate and environmental justice, adaptive responses, ecological resilience and cultural equity. Music by Jason Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins and Irvin Mayfield, Rebirth Brass Band. Visit our website at forthewild.world for the full episode description, references and action points.
If we want a just and humane world, we must create one in which apparatuses of oppression are no longer considered reasonable. This week on For The Wild, we are joined by Mariame Kaba for an expansive conversation on Transformative Justice, community accountability, criminalization of survivors, and freedom on the horizon. Mariame addresses punishment as an issue of directionality while reminding us why it is vital to have the prison abolition movement in conversation with the movement for climate and environmental justice. When we engage with these issues and shape our actions out of a commitment to removing violence at its core, we are working to transform our world beyond recognition into something teeming with possibility, beauty, and life. As a Researcher in Residence at the Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW), Mariame Kaba works with Andrea J. Ritchie, fellow Researcher in Residence, on a new Social Justice Institute (SJI) initiative, Interrupting Criminalization: Research in Action. Mariame is on the advisory boards of the Chicago Torture Justice Memorials, Critical Resistance and the Chicago Community Bond Fund. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications including The Nation Magazine, The Guardian, The Washington Post, In These Times, Teen Vogue, The New Inquiry and more. She runs Prison Culture blog. Mariame’s work has been recognized with several honors and awards. Music by Wyclef Jean, Jason Marsalis and Irvin Mayfield
This week on the podcast we begin to traverse into the history of reproductive justice and how colonization, sexism, class, and racism impact all areas of birthing and medical practices. Ayana’s conversation with Roots of Labor Birth Collective extends beyond most reproductive justice discourse. It will stretch you to think about justice, autonomy, and decolonization. As a part of our healing month, Roots of Labor reminds us that we must confront the legacies of violence we have suffered under, both as perpetrators and survivors. Music by Jason Marsalis, Irvin Mayfield, & Climbing PoeTree
If there s one thing everybody around the world knows about New Orleans, it s that we were the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The other thing they probably know is, we re the birthplace of jazz. The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra was, for a time, one of the most successful and well funded jazz institutions in the city. Today, a new CEO, Sarah Bell, is guiding the orchestra out of the financial crisis it found itself in when its founder, Irvin Mayfield, ran afoul of the law. And one of the most influential voices of the city s recovery from Hurricane Katrina, Garland Robinette, has left radio to continue a career as a visual artist, co owning with his wife, Nancy Rhett, Robinette Studios. Artist and media luminary Garland Robinette, and NOJO CEO Sarah Bell join Peter Ricchiuti on this edition of Out to Lunch. We find out what it s like for Garland to go from being one of the city s most influential voices, to sitting down behind an easel, alone, painting. And find out from Sarah what it s like trying to run an orchestra when people know more about your criminal record than your latest record. Photos at Commander s Palace by Alison Moon. This is a unique episode. This episode I'm the one answering all the questions. Noah Jackson interviews me about my recent pilgrimage to Africa. At age 11, Darrian began studying music at the Academic and Performing Arts Center under Dr. Perry Combs and several other inspiring music educators, including Alvin Fielder, London Branch and Chad Anderson. These musicians played a huge role in his early development and would also serve as his mentors. In 2008, Darrian moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he took over the drum chair in Ellis Marsalis's quartet. He stated, "I love playing with Mr. Marsalis; he allowed me to grow and explore the music without consequence." Darrian continued to play with Ellis until his departure from New Orleans in December 2012. Darrian is a rising star, drummer, composer, and band leader of The Session, a group comprised of unique characters he shared the bandstand with while playing in Jason Marsalis' vibe quartet. Darrian has performed in over 30 festivals worldwide. He has also performed at renowned venues such as The Kennedy Center, Herbst Theatre, Saenger Theatre, Aladdin Theater, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Snug Harbor, Smoke Jazz Club, and Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse. In addition to performing, Darrian taught percussion classes at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Performing and teaching are two of Darrian's greatest passions! It s the Little Things in life that make you happy, right That s why Shanece Gransam and Katy Channing called themselves The Little Things and you won t find a cuter, happier, ukulele playing, harmonizing couple anywhere. Shanece and Katy met in Florida but couldn t run away quick enough to get to New Orleans where, unlike Florida, people don t come up to you in restaurants and suggest that being a biracial lesbian couple don t cut it. We re angling for an invitaion to Katy and Shanece s "full on Hindu wedding." As you ll hear on the show, the brides are planning on both wearing saris. Kris Gabik knows how to make The Little things household words. Kris s brand storytelling biz, 84 Flash, did it for Irvin Mayfield, Tales of the Cocktail, and the Ritz Carlton Hotel, so how hard could it be to sell two "totally hot" girls Kris is right on it after the next maragarita. Rachel Dangermond is one of Happy Hour s favorite guests. Never short of an opinion or a quick comeback, Rachel is handing on the family trait to her son, Tin, who makes his debut on this episode of Happy Hour threatening to punch a guy s lights out, reminiscing about Spain, giving The Little Things some musical career advice, and begging for trains. Andrew Duhon is about to head off to India. Before he goes he tries out a brand new song about dancing in Heaven. All the photos on this page are at Casa Borrega and were taken by Douglas Engel. Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the youngest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and Ellis comprise New Orleans’s venerable first family of jazz. Jason is well known for his prodigaldrumming. Working with the Ellis Marsalis trioas well as the Marcus Roberts trio, he hasfine tuned his playing in two of the mostdemanding settings in modern jazz. However, with the release of 2008’s “Music Update,” listeners are now recognizing Jason for hisunique sound on the vibraphones. Jason has appeared at many of the foremost jazz venues through the US and Canada, and has toured Europe on the summer festival scene. His playing is unique; drawing from a wide range of influences, Jason performs original music as well as many hidden gems in the jazz literature and beyond As a drummer, Marsalis collaborates frequently with his brothers Delfeayo and Branford, in addition to Marcus Roberts and Ellis Marsalis. When he is not filling the drum chairs in these groups, Jason performs as a vibraphonist with his own quartet, and with musicians such as former Harry Connick drummer Shannon Powell, Irvin Mayfield, and others. Audio samples of Jason’s work on vibes are available at his website: WEBSITE: http://www.jasonmarsalis.com.
