Before beginning the story of the ten plagues which G-d brought upon Egypt, it presents the genealogy of the first three tribes of Israel – Reuben, Shimon and Levi. Rashi (6:14) explains that the Torah wanted to tell us about the family background of Moshe and Aharon, the ones who confronted Pharaoh and brought the plagues, and who descended from the tribe of Levi. It therefore began from the first tribe, Reuben, and continued until it reached Moshe and Aharon. The Torah concluded this section by stating, “This is Aharon and Moshe, to whom G-d said: Bring Beneh Yisrael out of the land of Egypt… They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh, king of Egypt…this is Moshe and Aharon” (6:26-27). Rashi, explaining the need for the seemingly repetitious phrase, “this is Moshe and Aharon,” writes: “They kept to their mission and their piety from the beginning until the end.” The Torah goes out of its way to emphasize that Moshe and Aharon remained committed to the goal of bringing Beneh Yisrael out of Egypt, until the very end. They retained their devotion, and their righteousness, throughout the entire process. It is common for people to grow weary and give up. When we start something new, like a new project or new spiritual undertaking, we are filled with excitement and enthusiasm, which fuels us and keeps us going. Inevitably, however, this excitement wanes with time. It is all but impossible for the enthusiasm felt at the beginning a new endeavor to last. Whether it's a new personal project, a new community project, a new business, or a new hobby – people so often give up in the middle, once the excitement that had kept them going wears off. This is one of the reasons why it is customary to make a festive Siyum celebration upon the completion of the study of a Masechet (tractate of Gemara), or of another significant portion of Torah. We celebrate not only the accomplishment itself, but also the person's persistence, his long-term commitment to the goal. It is relatively easy to begin a Masechet, and to study the first several pages. But seeing the project through to completion is far more difficult. Rashi's comments here teach us to follow the example set for us by Moshe and Aharon, to persist in pursuing our ambitious goals even after the initial excitement has waned. If we've taken on an important, meaningful project, let's apply ourselves to see it through to completion, despite the challenges and proverbial “bumps in the road” that we will inevitably encounter. In order to achieve, we must be prepared to put in the work even when we feel like giving up. Like Moshe and Aharon, we must be committed to making it until the end, to achieving the goals that we've set out to achieve.

Surprisingly, the Torah in Parashat Vaera interrupts the story of the Exodus from Egypt with a genealogical record of the first three of the tribes of Israel – Reuben, Shimon and Levi. It lists the names of the first several generations that descended from these three sons of Yaakob. Once the Torah reaches Moshe and Aharon, members of the tribe of Levi, this section ends, and the story of Yesiat Misrayim resumes. The commentators offered different explanations for why the Torah found it necessary to list the names of the descendants of these tribes. A particularly insightful approach was taken by Rav Samson Raphael Hirsch (Frankfurt, Germany, 1808-1888), whose yahrtzeit is observed around the time this Parasha is read, on 27 Tebet. He explains that Moshe's singular, exceptional stature of greatness gave rise to the concern that people would look to him as a type of divine being. We know of other religions that elevated their leaders to G-d-like status, Heaven forbid, finding it necessary to claim that the founder of their faith was more than just a human. Judaism, however, outright rejects such a notion. We of course admire and revere our spiritual heroes, but we firmly believe that they were human beings, sharing the same physical properties as the rest of us. At no point did Judaism ever embrace the notion that a human being can be a divine being. And for this reason, Rav Hirsch writes, the Torah elaborates on Moshe's family background. It wants to emphasize that Moshe, like us, was produced by a father and mother who got married, and that he had siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a large extended family. Before Moshe confronted Pharaoh to bring the ten plagues and put the miraculous process of the Exodus into motion, it was necessary for the Torah to emphasize that Moshe was human, no less human than anybody else, a member of a family. Rav Hirsch's explanation brings to mind a brilliant insight of the Hatam Sofer (Rav Moshe Sofer, Pressburg, 1762-1839) to explain an otherwise perplexing comment of the Midrash. When the time came for Moshe to pass away, G-d said to him, "Hen Karebu Yamecha La'mut" – "Behold, the time of your death is approaching" (Debarim 31:14). The Midrash relates that Moshe responded by questioning why G-d used the word "Hen" in this context, in informing him of his imminent death. Moshe had used this same word earlier, in describing G-d's unlimited power and dominion over the earth: "Hen L'Hashem Elokecha Ha'shamayim U'shmeh Ha'shamayim" ("Behold, G-d owns the heavens and the upper heavens…" – Debarim 10:14). Why, Moshe asked, would G-d use the word that he had invoked in praising Him to announce that he would soon leave this world? The Midrash does not tell us how G-d responded to Moshe's complaint, why He chose to use the word "Hen" when informing Moshe that he would soon pass away. The Hatam Sofer explained that G-d used this word precisely because Moshe's death served to preserve the belief in G-d's exclusive, absolute dominion over the earth. Moshe's passing was, of course, a painful loss, but it was a crucial reminder that he was only human, that despite his unparalleled stature of greatness, he was not a divine being. And thus G-d informed Moshe about his imminent passing with the word "Hen" – hearkening to Moshe's pronouncement of G-d's unlimited rule over the earth, a tenet of faith which was reinforced by Moshe's death, as his mortality demonstrated that he was human, and not a G-d.

In our study today, the 2 1/2 tribes of Israel – Reuben, Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh – are going to be set free to return to their families and earthly inheritance because they had faithfully helped their brothers in the 9 1/2 tribes overcome their enemies. For 7 years, these 2 1/2 tribes lived away from their families and the comforts of home to keep their word of going to war with their brothers until God gave them victory over their enemies. Now they are sent home with all of the blessings of warfare and to be reunited with their wives, children and loved ones. Before they cross the Jordan, while they were still in The Promised Land, they built a monument, large enough for everyone to see. It was actually a memorial or token of remembrance to remind them not only the faithfulness of God, but their unity with their brothers on “the other side of the Jordan.” Unfortunately, when the rest of Israel heard about what they had done, they mustered an army at Shiloh and prepared to go to war against their brother tribes. Did you catch that? When Israel heard about this altar or memorial, without hearing the whole story from their brethren on the other side, they decide that they were sinning against God and it is time for war! When the delegation from the 9 1/2 tribes confronts their brothers in the 2 1/2 tribes on the other side of what was the meaning of this altar, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh assured the others by Jehovah, the God of gods, that were not in rebellion against the Lord and did not build the altar to sacrifice offerings. The truth was they built the altar as a memorial because they loved the Lord and feared that in the future the children of the 9 1/2 tribes would say to their children. “What right do you have to worship the Lord God of Israel? The Lord has placed the Jordan River as a barrier between our people and your people and you who chose to dwell of the other side of the river have no part in the Lord.” (Joshua 22:24,25) The fear was that this rumor would be believed and thus discourage the descendants of the 3 1/2 tribes from worshiping Jehovah. But they could reply, "Look at the altar of the Lord that our fathers made. Yes, it is patterned after the altar of Jehovah, but it is not for burnt offerings or sacrifices; it is a symbol of the relationship with God that both of us have.” (v 28) The name of the altar was Ed, which means witness or testimony (v 34). The real intention of building this altar was to be a witness or a testimony of the unity of the 12 tribes for future generations. An important lesson that is tucked away in Joshua 22 is that people and churches that are judged falsely are damaged when rumors or gossip are acted on as absolute truth. Beloved, when you hear a rumor about something or someone, before you come to a decision yourself, make sure that you go to the source of the matter and get all of the facts. Had the 9 1/2 tribes not gotten the full story, a civil war between the tribes on the two sides of the river would have broken out! How many wars that have broken out amongst God's people may have been avoided if after we heard a rumor about someone, we had gone to the person and gathered all of the facts about the situation first? What peril lies in the incompatibility of Christian with Christian! How easily misunderstandings occur, and with what damaging results! How rapidly they spread, and the farther they go the worse they get, until often an evangelical church is completely ruined by this very sin. Why is it we are all so ready to listen to gossip? Why is it that we are so quick to impute the worst motives to other people? Why do we believe so quickly a rumor concerning another person's character, and then repeat it with hundredfold exaggeration? The devil has used gossiping, slandering, backbiting Christians to infect other Christians to divide more churches and destroy more lives and ministries than drugs, alcohol and sexual sin combined.
