'Lefty's' 27 victories account for nearly half (45.8%) of the last-place Philadelphia Phillies 59 wins.November 2, 1999 Ken Griffey Jr., who wants to be nearer his family in Orlando, asks the Mariners to move him to a team that is closer to Florida. The superstar outfielder will get his wish in February when Seattle trades him to the Reds for Mike Cameron, Antonio Perez, and Brett Tomko, and minor leaguer Jake Meyer.Pat Gillick signs on with the Phillies and will lead them to the 2008 World Series Title. Today's Birth boy Bob Feller A farmboy from Van Meter, Iowa, Feller was only 17 when he struck out eight members of the St. Louis Cardinals in three innings of an exhibition game. After this awesome display of pitching, Feller was advised to seek voluntary retirement from high school in order to sign a pro-baseball contract. In his first major league start, against the St. Louis Browns, Feller fanned 15 hitters and never looked back. For twenty years, all with the Indians, the teenage phenomena dominated AL batters with his blazing fastball and bending curve. He hurled three no-hitters, including the only opening day gem, notched 12 one-hitters, served in World War II, and won 19 games for Cleveland's 1948 World Championship team. Feller was the second big league star to enter the service for World War II (following Hank Greenberg). He lost almost four seasons to military duty but was still at the top of his game when he returned. His first year back from the war he set a new record for strikeouts in a season (348 in 1946). While in the U.S. Navy, Feller won eight battle stars.

Manager Joe Espada joins The Matt Thomas Show following the Houston Astros losing 7-9 to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday at Minute Maid Park. Framber Valdez started on the mound and set up the Astros with a 6-1 lead through four innings. However, the fifth inning brought trouble as Valdez gave up seven runs and sent 10 Angels to the plate. Valdez tied his career high for runs allowed with eight, and the Astros would lose 9-7, their largest blown lead of the season. After the game, catcher Yainer Daiz, Valdez and Espada all said Valdez deviated from the game plan and shook Diaz off on some pitches. "It's a learning experience for both guys." When asked why Valdez was left in the game, Espada said "we've been going through our bullpen pretty heavily here" during this homestand, and "it's asking a lot," so starters need to go deep into games. Monday's outing was one of the worst of Valdez's career; however, Espada still has confidence in the starting pitcher's ability. "He has one of the best sinkers in the game." Jose Abreu was demoted to the Florida Complex League on May 1, but during the weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers, general manager Dana Brown said José Abreu will play a few more minor-league games and could join the Astros in Oakland this weekend. Abreu "has a much cleaner swing" and "he sounds like he's ready to go...I think it will be beneficial" for Abreu to play in a minor-league game. Espada also talks about Kyle Tucker's spot in the batting lineup, Jake Meyer's recent success, getting players back from the injured list and Joey Loperfido's value as a left bat.

The Mann on a Mission Podcast

“ We rarely get to fully control the environment around us. What we have much more control over is our attitude. So even when it's tough, fix a smile and face up to the challenges in front of you.” Jake Meyer is a world-record breaking British mountaineer, adventurer and keynote speaker. Jake was only 14 when he set his sights on wanting to climb the ‘7 Summits' –the highest mountain on each continent. At 6.30am on the 4th June 2005, aged only 21 and 135 days old, he reached the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world and his 7th continental highpoint. At the time, he was the youngest Briton to climb Mt Everest, and the youngest man in the world to complete the 7 Summits. Not content with just the 7 Summits, he also led a team which broke the record for the fastest ascent of the highest mountain in each of the 48 states in the contiguous USA. This culminated in 48 mountains, 350 miles of trekking, 100,000ft of climbing and 15,000 miles of driving in 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes. Since 2008 Jake has been focusing on trying to climb K2 in Pakistan, the second highest mountain in the world and arguably the most difficult and dangerous in the world with a 1 in 5 death to summit ratio. He made attempts in 2009 and 2016, but on both occasions he was forced to turn back on his summit attempt, mere hours from his goal. Undeterred, in 2018 he returned for a third time, and on the 21st July 2018 he finally stood on the summit of K2. In doing so he joined an extremely small group of some of the world's best climbers to have done the same –fewer than 400 people who have stood on the top of K2 (more people have been into space) and 85 have died trying. Jake's 10 year odyssey shows that perseverance can truly pay off. He is leadership Development Consultant for the Inspirational Development Group (IDG) who work to transform the behaviour of individuals and teams to bring about sustained change within organisations. His charity work includes support for – walking with the wounded, help for heroes, the princes trust and the make a wish foundation. He is also a current serving army reserve officer with the Royal Wessex Yeomanry which has included an operational of Afghanistan. My guest this week is world record breaking mountaineer and adventurer, Jake Meyer In this episode we talk about being too cool for school, the dangers of getting out of the wrong side of the bed, embracing stress and the importance of choosing the right team mates when your life is in their hands.  Bio Jake Meyer is an experienced public speaker whose incredible story of climbing Mt Everest aged only 21 is an inspirational tale of determination, tenacity and an unerring will to succeed. Jake was only 14 when he set his sights on wanting to climb the ‘7 Summits’ – the highest mountain on each continent. Not content with just the 7 Summits, he also holds the record for the fastest ascent of the highest mountain in each of the 48 states in the contiguous USA. This culminated in 48 mountains, 350 miles of trekking, 100,000ft of climbing and 15,000 miles of driving in 23 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes. He has also made first ascents of mountains and routes in Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, holds the record for the fastest ascent of the highest point in every county in England, and numerous expeditions to Africa and South America. In 2009 he spent 2 months in Pakistan on K2, the second highest mountain in the world and arguably the most difficult and dangerous (with a 1 in 4 death rate). He reached 7700m without oxygen before bad snow conditions forced a retreat to safety. Jake returned to K2 in 2016 as part of the first British Team to attempt the mountain in over a decade – which was described as ‘probably the strongest team on the mountain’. Again unfortunately, the summit wasn’t to be – during the summit attempt, a huge avalanche destroyed Camp 3 (7300m), calling a halt to all climbing for that season. Jake will be returning to K2 in summer 2018. In 2010 Jake Meyer joined the Inspirational Development Group as a consultant. IDG offers first-class training designed to transform the behaviour of individuals and teams, and lead to sustainable change within an organisation. They offer a range of bespoke Leadership Development programmes focussing on the interlocking areas of Leadership, Followership and Partnership, to produce accomplished leaders who are also effective followers and highly skilled team players. He was an ambassador to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards Scheme, and regularly presented the Gold awards at St James’s Palace, and has worked closely with a number of charities including Walking With The Wounded, Help for Heroes, The Prince’s Trust, the Prince’s Teaching Institute, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the CAIRN Trust. Jake is also a commissioned officer in the Army Reserve, and in 2012 spent 6.5 months in Afghanistan as a Battlegroup Influence and Consequence Management Officer. Jake Meyer is available as a thought-provoking, inspirational and motivational speaker for events around the world. His presentation can be tailored specifically to the audience and to fulfil the aims and objectives of the client. He is comfortable providing focused and intimate discussion with small teams of Senior Executives or presenting to large audiences of 1800+.  Recorded: 22nd November 2018 Links: More about Jake Meyer More about Maria Franzoni Ltd Connect with Maria on Linkedin Connect with Maria on FaceBook     To book any of the speakers featured on the Speaking Business podcast, click here

Listen in as Jake Meyer, Pat Cotter and I follow up our "Breakouts" episode with our 2018 bust candidates.  But first, let's do some trivia!  I have four questions for the guys to start the show (2:00).  From there we jump into the league news and notes (19:20).  Andddd it's bust time!  Jake gets the show rolling with a QB I did NOT expect (32:30).  I'll tell you why Rashaad Penny isn't in the best situation to put up big numbers in year 1 (40:50).  Pat keeps the RB talk going by telling us why you should probably pause on Darius Guice and his current ADP (51:45).  Jake throws us yet ANOTHER curveball with his second player (57:20).  Listen as Pat breaks my heart by naming Josh Gordon as his second bust (1:12:00).  Finally, I'm a little worried that Jimmy Graham won't live up to the hype in Green Bay (1:14:05).

Last time we interviewed Carlos Lara and Prof. Robert Murphy to give us the Austrian perspective on the boom & bust cycle. Today we’re going to see the another side of the debate, with the help of Jake Meyer, a Nobel Prize losing economist at California State University! Jake’s work focuses on empirically studying the interaction of the international finance system and domestic political factors, particularly looking at financial crises and credit--all very relevant to the boom/bust cycle debate. He’s also a research economist at Forensic Economic Services, was part of the faculty at Claremont Graduate University, and got his Masters and PhD from Claremont as well. My guest today is Jake Meyer of California State University, Long Beach. We discuss Jake's work on the intersection of financial crises and politics. Jake's work explores important questions such as the interaction between interest group politics and financial and currency crises. A country's monetary authority needs to manage both the domestic labour market and the country's exchange rate, but particular interest groups tend to favour one over the other very strongly. If one of these interest groups becomes disproportionately influential in national politics, they can affect monetary policy in ways that lead to crises. For instance, if a group that cares about the domestic economy and not the exchange rate takes power, they can push the monetary authority into causing an exchange rate crisis. If a group that cares exclusively about the exchange rate takes power, they can push the monetary authority to ignore the domestic economy to the point that it causes a banking crisis. Jake's work also looks at the way countries learn in the wake of financial crises. He looks at the change in the growth rate of credit before and after a crisis, and he finds that things like the number of veto players and the independence of the central bank impact this change. Check out Jake's Quora account, where he answers many questions related to economics.
