Guest Chad Whitacre Panelists Richard Littauer | Eriol Fox Show Notes In this episode, host Richard Littauer and co-host Eriol Fox interview Chad Whitacre, a key figure in the open source community and Head of Open Source at Sentry. Today, they delve into the challenges and strategies related to sustaining open source projects, focusing on Sentry's efforts to fund open source through various initiatives, including the ambitious OSS Pledge. The discussion covers the history of Sentry's commitment to open source, the creation of a comprehensive funding program, and the launch of the OSS Pledge. The pledge aims to encourage companies to contribute financially to open source by establishing a social norm. Chad also touches on the broader impact and potential of open source foundations and platforms in allocating funds and supporting maintainers, highlighting the importance of making open source a core part of company culture and brand identity. Press download now to hear more! [00:01:50] Chad provides a brief history of Sentry, its evolution from an open source project to a start-up, and its commitment to support open source projects. He discusses Sentry's open source funding program, its growth over the years, and the company's budget plans for the current year. [00:04:04] Chad talks about the importance of other companies joining Sentry in funding open source projects and mentions the launch of the “Open Source Pledge.” [00:05:05] Chad explains that funding open source is part of Sentry's brand marketing, similar to how large companies sponsor events for brand visibility. [00:07:48] Richard asks about the potential dilution of Sentry's brand by encouraging other companies to join the funding efforts. Chad explains that the “Open Source Pledge” requires companies to contribute a minimum of $2,000 per developer annually and share their contributions publicly. [00:11:37] Eriol expresses concerns about the focus on developers, noting the importance of other roles like designers in the open source ecosystem. Chad acknowledges the different roles in open source and discusses how Sentry focuses on funding dependencies critical to their tech stack. [00:14:56] Chad talks about the role of open source foundations, especially in light of new European regulations (CRA), and their potential to steward funds more effectively. [00:18:55] Richard questions how foundations can pay developers under U.S. law, leading to a discussion on the need for potential changes in how foundations operate. [00:21:48] Eriol appreciates the “Open Source Pledge” for providing a vocabulary and structure to involve organizations and companies in supporting open source. [00:23:06] Chad talks about the upcoming media campaign to promote the pledge and the aim to establish a new social norm around funding open source. [00:25:13] Richard asks how the pledge ensures that funds given are truly no-strings- attached to which Chad responds that platforms like GitHub Sponsors typically enforce a no-strings-attached culture, and the pledge doesn't directly handle funds but incentivizes companies to contribute through established platforms. [00:27:56] Richard seeks clarification on how the pledge ensures contributions don't come with expectations of ongoing development work from maintainers. Chad emphasizes the need for adding more financial support to the open source ecosystem and fostering collaboration among platforms, foundations, and maintainers. [00:33:49] The conversation concludes with a brief mention of Fair Source, another initiative Chad is involved in. [00:34:14] Find out where you can follow Chad and his work online. September 5, 2024 - LNP News Alert **** (17:00 hours) For the very first time, an "unairable" episode is released from the vault. Thanks to the willing and completely un-coerced consent of THE Derek Whitacre... Life with the Ryans #50 sees the light of day. Recorded on April 26, 2018 this episode should be a case study on human psychology. Derek is a friend and was one of our first guests. It went well-enough where he came back for our 50th episode. He had also recently experienced a health scare which we planned to discuss for the first time here. It all seemed so simple... Everything starts fine. Positive energy from everyone. Until... something goes off the rails. One person holds onto something from weeks ago, it eventually comes out on the show... and we spend the rest of the time going in circles discussing relationship advice and what makes a good podcast, all while trying to decide who's at fault. Spoiler alert, there are no innocent parties... EVERYONE is to blame. It's difficult for me to watch on my own but when we reluctantly screened it as a group after Nicole passed away (15-20 of us... #notawake) we were all crying laughing. No matter how many times you'll think we MUST have gotten to the crux of the situation, you'll be surprised til the end. As hilarious as it is to see all our imperfections on display, I'm taken with how vibrant and vivacious Nicole was back in 2018, even while discussing how upset she was about her decline. In fact, this may be the missing link to what the hell happened here! This one's for you, Babe. I love you, Derek loves you and your entire community loves you. Forever. I love you at home. Please love one another. Thanks for watching. Enjoy... J

I'm not a religious person, but I'm convinced that if there's a God, that's the language that he speaks — light on the surface of the water. I'm mesmerized by it. Today, we're chatting with the head of Open Source at Sentry, Chad Whitacre. Everyone knows that once a startup begins to make the move from garage band to stadium tour, they're going to need some investors. But how do we bridge the gap between them? Chad's background as a developer has undoubtedly contributed to his talent for communicating with developers in his current role. But beyond that, he and the whole Sentry team have slightly bigger ambitions in mind for the future. They have begun work on something they call the Open Source Pledge, and Chad breaks down for us exactly what this entails, and how it will incentivise organisations to prioritise contributing to the open source community in the same way they prioritise profits. He also takes us through the history of Sentry, and how their roots in the open source community have cemented their commitment to ensuring its continued survival. If you're passionate about open source, and seeing maintainers get their dues, then you'll want to hear this. Chad also introduces FOSS Funder, a platform encouraging companies to give back to open source and shares his unique approach to business cards that has left a tangible imprint on the community. Hit download now to hear more! [00:01:47] Chad is introduced, we hear his history with open source platforms and Sentry's programs for community engagement, compliance, and funding. [00:02:30] Justin asks Chad about changes since his last appearance, particularly Sentry's 150k open source funding initiative, and Chad describes Sentry's journey, the systematic approach to funding open source projects, and the growth of Sentry's annual funding program from 150k to 500k. [00:06:03] Justin interjects with a question about the math used to determine funding, leading Chad to reflect on the economic value of open source and the sense of unfairness in the community about companies not giving back. He continues to explain the reasoning behind funding figures. [00:08:35] The conversation turns to defining the right amount to give, with discussions on per-engineer contributions and industry metrics for sponsorship. [00:11:02] Richard asks about Sentry's employee count, office locations, and if they pay a living wage, to which Chad confirms they do, and details Sentry's office distribution and company policies. [00:11:50] Richard raises a question about the focus of Sentry's financial contributions, wondering if open source practitioners are the most appropriate recipients compared to other groups, and Chad states that Sentry does have contractors and they are paid adequately. He emphasizes that Sentry's founders come from open an open source background, and the company still views itself as aligned with open source values. [00:14:00] Chad clarifies that when Sentry gives money to open source, it's viewed as giving back for value received. He draws a distinction between charitable giving and investing in software, suggesting that the open source funding program is more about paying for the value received from open source software rather than charity. [00:17:23] Chad speaks about the provision of public goods, touching on taxes and shame as mechanisms, and the role of corporate social validation. [00:18:38] Leslie raises concern about the divestment from open source by corporations and the impact on the open source maintainer ecosystem. Chad discusses the multiple roles of OSPOs beyond funding and the cultural importance of open source at Sentry, and he tells the story of Sentry's attempt to support every project on GitHub through GitHub sponsors and the challenges encountered. [00:22:57] Chad acknowledges the effort required to sponsor every project, mentioning the help of thanks.dev crew and the need for better tools to simplify the process. He also introduces FOSS Funders, a platform started by Dwayne O'Brien, and explains the group's activities and its Slack community. [00:27:25] Abby inquires about how companies can join FOSS Funders and get their logos featured. Chad details how companies can participate in FOSS Funders through platforms, and the next phases of FOSS Funders. [00:29:12] Abby shares how her and Chad met and making his special business cards which are pennies with a logo punched into them. [00:32:14] Find out where you can learn more about Chad and his work on the web. He also touches on the connection and the need for honest conversations about sustainability in the community. Quotes [00:05:26] “The open source community is not monolithic.” [00:06:42] “There's all these idealistic youths who put all of this software out there into the world, and then waking up ten years later totally burned out because they poured themselves out writing all this open source software.” [00:09:20] “We need other companies to join us.” [00:09:44] “We also need a better name for the non-commercial, sponsorable part of the community.” [00:09:57] “Let's make this real, let's make this sustainable.” [00:10:06] “It needs to be weird for companies not to do what Sentry is doing.” [00:12:43] “If we're going to do this Pledge1%, giving to open source is part of that.” [00:13:09] “Open source is core to our company culture. And also, we've been there.” [00:14:40] “Personal opinion: I think this line-item should be software, and not charity.” [00:15:38] “Public goods are IOR: Invest On Return.” [00:17:29] “Public goods are provisioned in two ways: taxes or shame.” [00:23:00] “We need to start telling stories about the companies that are doing it.” Spotlight [00:34:08] Richard's spotlight is the book, Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. [00:34:44] Leslie's spotlight is the Sovereign Tech Fund. [00:35:12] Abby's spotlight is The Wheel of Time audiobooks. [00:35:45] Justin's spotlight is the great city of Los Angeles. Have you wondered what you would do if asked to commit a crime in your workplace? Could you be a whistleblower? The choice is not always easy, and fear may prevent acting with integrity. Linda's guests, Mark & Ginger Whitacre, chose truth and integrity over money and power, which led to Mark becoming an FBI informant who wore a wire for over three years to expose fraud and corruption in one of America's largest corporations. As a result, they faced hurdles and hard times, but their courage to tell the truth changed government policies, business protocols, improved the lives of millions of people, and changed the course of history. Mark now serves as vice-president of Culture and Care and executive director of the t-Factor Initiative at Coca Cola Consolidated, but the path to that role was not easy. It's a wild based-on-a-true-story film about Mark Whitacre. In the early-1990s, Whitacre was the corporate vice president and President of the BioProducts Division of the agro-business giant Archer Daniels Midland. Whitacre would go on to become an informant in the FBI investigation into a conspiracy to price-fix lysine, an essential amino acid. At the same time he was informing on his employer to the FBI, Whitacre was embezzling $9 million from ADM in a kickbacks and money laundering scheme. It all came to an end a few years later when ADM settled federal charges for more than $100 million and paid hundreds of millions of dollars more to plaintiffs and customers to settle class-action lawsuits. In 1998, Whitacre pled guilty to tax evasion and fraud and was sentenced to nine years in prison. But what marked the end of this tumultuous period in Mark Whitacre's life also marked the beginning of his journey to his Christian faith, redemption, and a series of second chances.Today, Eric Kohn talks with Mark Whitacre about his time as a corporate executive, his time as an FBI informant, his time in federal prison, and how all of this brought him to his Christian faith that he now integrates into his corporate work.Subscribe to our podcastsThe Informant!
