Ian Handasyde - How to become a novel author

James Hand is a series author, but life didn't start out like that. Ian Handasyde (real name) spent most of his life as a Primary school teacher, and musician. His cover band Turn It Up can still be found entertaining crowds throughout the leafy Melbourne suburbs. Ian eventually found his way into film making. Having written a number of scripts (Feature and Shorts), he decided to dip his toe in the water and develop and produce one of his feature scripts, ‘Zyco Rock', a futuristic, anti-drug teen film.Although ‘Zyco Rock' was shown at a number of festivals around the world, it didn't catch the eye of major distributers, causing Ian to lose a lot of money. However, a later Short Film, “Just Friends” was accepted and shown at Cannes Film Festival.Receiving that shot in the arm of confidence, Ian decided to turn one of his feature scripts into a book ‘Luina', using the pseudonym James Hand. With the finish of ‘Luina', Ian (we'll call him James from here) pondered… “So, what happens to Beth Duncan?”, the lead character in the novel. James drew up a rough outline and set to creating the series. To date, 4 books have been published: ‘Luina', ‘The Fit Girl (Part 1)', ‘The Fit Girl (Part 2)', and ‘Shh, Secret Girl'.Each novel leading straight into the next, is based on the continuing adventure of Beth Duncan… and boy does she have some adventures! To date, James has written 8 books, with the next one ‘London Bound' set to be published October this year. The ninth, ‘Olympics' I will start later this year. Yes, Beth goes to the Olympics as an 800m runner! James writes all his manuscripts freehand and prefers to write at the beach. His family travels to Palm Cove every year for 2-4 weeks, and with his outline, James sits on a chair on the beach, takes out his folder and lets his imagination run wild.Socials:Insta: James Hand @jameshandauthor You Tube: James Hand Author @jameshandauthorBand - Turn It Up : www.turnitup.bizEnjoy the visual here on Youtube

The United Nations Climate Change Conference is underway in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. In this episode of the Food Matters Live podcast, we are taking stock to ask the food industry about its hopes for COP27. We have spoken to key figures from the sector to ask them: - What they want to see achieved - How hopeful they are that meaningful change can come about - Whether or not the food industry gets enough attention at these climate change conferences  And we ask them to reflect on COP26 and what progress has been made in the last 12 months. 253: Could switching to a climatarian diet really save the planet?

Table Talk

Could adopting a climatarian diet be the biggest single change each of us could make to reduce global warming? It's a big question, and possibly a big change for many of us, but James Hand, Co-Founder of Giki Zero, thinks it could have the biggest impact. In this episode of the Table Talk podcast, James sets out why and attempts to bust some myths around climatarian diets. He says that the average person in the UK has a carbon footprint of nine tonnes per year, and in order to meet CO2 reduction targets, that needs to come down to two tonnes. Our diet is one of the areas we have a lot of control of, and when you consider that food makes up around 25 per cent of the average person's carbon footprint, it's clear that making a positive change would have a big impact. But how easy and how realistic is it to expect everyone to make such a change? What are the main challenges for the average consumer? And can those challenges really be overcome? When thinking about the carbon footprint of the food we eat, there are so many things to consider; farming practices, processing, packaging, delivery. So is it all just too difficult? And what are the worst foods when it comes to impacting the environment?  Would simply removing meat and dairy from your diet make a big enough difference? Would switching your pet food to insect protein help?  James tries to answer all these questions and more. Listen to the full episodes to find out what a climatarian diet might look like, how market forces are both helping and hindering moves towards more sustainable eating, and why James believes it's vitally important not to take the fun out of food. James Hand, Co-Founder, Giki Zero James Hand is a data scientist and carbon footprint specialist who co-founded Giki with his wife Jo in 2017.  Before setting up Giki, James worked for 20 years in fund management at Ninety One where he was co-CIO, co-head of the 4Factor equity team and built the ESG team.  James has worked with various academics, including Dr Richard Carmichael, on the role that individuals can play in achieving Net Zero and lectured on behavioural finance and personal carbon footprints About Giki Zero Giki offers a step by step guide to reduce an individual's footprint on the planet.  It calculates, tracks and reduces environmental foodprints.

Escuchar audio

Why are we putting explosives on our plants? On this episode, Colleen charts the history of ammonium nitrate, the synthetic fertilizer that propelled the rise of industrial agriculture in the 20th century--cheap to manufacture, but spectacularly costly in terms of lives lost. This highly explosive compound has caused some of the worst industrial accidents of all time (Oppau, 1921, Texas City, 1947, Toulouse, 2001, West, Texas, 2013, Tianjin, 2015, and Beirut, 2020) and was the terrorist weapon used in Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995.  Nitrogen is critical to all life, and as any farmer or gardener knows, is the first ingredient in fertilizers (the “N” in the N-P-K). Plants can’t naturally pull nitrogen out of the air without the help of soil microbes; it wasn’t until the invention of the Haber-Bosch Process in 1910 that humans found a way to cut out the microbial middlemen and provide nitrogen to plants in synthetic form.  We discuss the role of nitrogen in plant life, the disastrous toll of the Beirut bombing, Trump’s rollback of EPA regulations on fertilizer facilities, and how going organic (“teaming with microbes”) can help save the planet.  ...And then, to lighten things up, we read a listener letter!
