From first-minute penalties in Seattle, to the Naeher-aissance denying Utah their first-ever win in front of a "sold out" crowd, to 17-year-old Kennedy Fuller making as many headlines as Bay FC goalscorer Asisat Oshoala, there were narratives galore.  But Eric, Evan, and Arianna can only focus on one thing: the Kansas City Current and Portland Thorns opening CPKC Stadium with nine goals, tying the NWSL single-game record. Did Mike Norris make a wise decision rolling out an entirely new backline? Did Vlatko Andonovski properly adjust to Janine Beckie's arrival in the second half? It has been a rollercoaster of emotions in 48 hours for fans of the Portland Timbers and Thorns. On this week's episode of Soccer Made in Portland, co-hosts Ryan Clarke and Chris Rifer break down the Savarese firing and what it means for the Timbers' future. Canada forward Janine Beckie has joined the growing chorus calling for better research into the prevalence of injuries in women's soccer, saying that alarm bells would ring if their male counterparts were suffering the same fate. The 28-year-old, who helped Canada capture gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, is among a group of players who will miss the Women's World Cup that kicks off on July 20 after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. This is apparently the same injury that could keep Springbok captain Siya Kolisi out of the World Cup later this year.

Born to Canadian parents in Colorado, she's played top level footy for both countries, and she's currently under contract with Manchester City. So the forward has deep knowledge about the quirks and qualities of most of the leading women in the game. Sometime teammates, sometime opponents, often both. At this moment, Beckie is digging in her cleats for the Olympic tilt, and that's top of mind as she catches up with Player's Own Voice podcast host Anastasia Bucsis. How is the Canadian team taking to new coach Bev Priestman? What's going to make the difference in Canadian efforts to finish even higher on the podium than the 2012 and 2016 Bronze wins? What's the thinking on the current roster? Beckie is forthcoming about the peaks and valleys of her career, and she shows particular class in describing one stinging moment, a missed world cup penalty kick in 2019. Beckie took exactly the right lesson from that saved shot, which is, she is an aggressive, confident penalty taker, and not a dang thing is going to change about that!

In this weeks episode we look back on a bounce of home games at the Academy, last Sunday's win against Birmingham City. After a weekend of results throughout the FAWSL, Manchester City sit top of the table as it stands on 12 points following 4 in 4 wins. Midweek, attention returned to the Champions League once more as we welcomed Atletico Madrid to the Academy Stadium and also the welcomed return of former blue, Toni Duggan who you'll hear from later in the podcast. It was difficult night for City, an early goal from Janine Beckie. Cancelled out by Atletico in City latter stages of the game, a lapse in concentration & Corral was able to capitalize. We hear from Manager, Nick Cushing & POTM Jill Scott following the 1 all result. City will take the result to Madrid & the 2nd leg tie will be played away on Wednesday 30th October. Dave joins me on the weeks podcast as we look ahead to a run of away fixtures, we preview both Sunday's Manchester Derby at Leigh Sports Village in the Conti Cup & next weeks trip to Arsenal at Borehamwood. Dave also provides fans with some away days info for anyone making the trip. Credit - Suzy Wrack (Post Match Audio - vs Atletico Madrid)

Andrea Neil says it's a heavy responsibility to put the situation of a penalty kick at the World Cup on the shoulders of Janine Beckie because you'd want someone who has been in that situation to take the kick. Andrea says there are great players that are coming up in the Canadian system and they are all 24 and under, and she considers those players no where close to their peak.

TSN's Kristian Jack says no doubt about it, a manager should give the players clarity as to who is the designated penalty kicker on the field. Kristian says scrap everything else away, whether it was a good penalty kick or not by Janine Beckie, if you have Christine Sinclair on the pitch in a situation to take a penalty kick, Christine Sinclair should be taking the kick.
