The 'GOAT' is how fans and broadcasters describe the greatest athlete of all time.  It's also the fuel that has fired debate since sports began. I can certainly make a case for my guest this week, Canadian soccer phenom Christine Sinclair being in that exclusive club.  No male or female on the planet has scored more international goals, and she is the second footballer of either sex to score at five World Cup editions. Her legacy is a testament to her athleticism and perseverance: five FIFA Women's World Cups, Four Olympic Tournaments with three medals and one Gold, three championships with professional teams, and twice the National Collegiate Division Championship in the United States. In January 2022, Sinclair was awarded the Best FIFA Special Award as the world's all-time leading scorer. Christine has just released a fantastic memoir called Playing the Long Game. Christine reflects on her rousing successes, the role her family played, why she wants to level the playing field for women athletes and why Canada and Canadians need to support professional women's soccer in Canada. I also invite two people who have played with Christine to share their thoughts on why 'Sinc' is the greatest and why she matters beyond the field.  Karina LeBlanc, who backstopped Canada's national team, is now the General Manager of Portland Thorns FC, where Christine plays, and Shannon Cole, the VP of Marketing at RBC, played with and against Christine in college. As you would expect from someone who has accomplished so much and for so long, Christine offers many powerful life lessons on perseverance leading to possibility.

Rhian Wilkinson: changing the culture, one win at a time

Player's Own Voice

‘Culture', toxic or otherwise, is invoked almost daily in sports. Like a collective mood, it is easily named but much more difficult to manage- let alone improve. Rhian Wilkinson, the new coach of the Portland Thorns, has managed to do both those things. She inherited a club that had recently endured a blistering abuse scandal. Turning that culture around is an ongoing success story, and it's by no means the only problematic situation Wilkinson has confronted in her long career. In a wide-ranging chat about her Soccer experiences in England, Wales, Norway, the U.S.A., and here in Canada (as a player on the groundbreaking national teams of 2012 and 2016), Wilkinson shares lessons learned from grassroots to elite teams. Anastasia leads Wilkinson back to England, where the younger player had to deal with boys who never passed the ball to their obviously gifted teammate. The talk moves through her national team years, when some coaching advice brought on uncomfortably necessary introspection. And jumps ahead to where Wilkinson coaches now, at the epicenter of the North American women's game. Are the Thorns the picture of a healthy team culture? G.M. Karina LeBlanc's toddler is a regular visitor in the locker room. And there are more team mate's babies on the way. A distraction in the clubhouse ? Au contraire. The team are defending league champions, and it's exactly for those little ones that Wilkinson is laying down a winning culture today. Looking closely at the unprecedented international successes for the Canadian men and women's teams, Wilkinson traces a direct line of winning ways and leadership back a decade to her teammates and then coach John Herdman. She names names- and describes how individuals from the class of 2012 have gone on to change soccer culture (there's that word again- and she does not use it casually) for the better, wherever they landed. It's the last podcast of a double season- two Olympics in the same year will do that! Anastasia is recharging her audio recording gear and POV will be back later in the summer.

But for LeBlanc, it was never just about the play on the pitch. Even in the big wins- her team aimed beyond the game of the day. The really big idea is to make women’s football a force for global change. Helping young women, particularly, assess themselves in a new light, once they get the chance to participate in the world’s game. Since becoming Head of CONCACAF Women’s Football, LeBlanc has had the privilege and pleasure to see it happen again and again in the 41 countries that represent the FIFA association. A shy girl comes to the pitch for her first time, and within a few hours, sees herself as a player, with all the confidence, enthusiasm and strength that goes with it. "I couldn't see my baby daughter for two weeks" - former Canada Karina Leblanc goalkeeper gave birth to her daughter last month. However, soon after her baby was born, Karina was rushed to hospital with breathing issues. Due to the possible risk of exposure to COVID 19 at the hospital - Karina then had to self quarantine from her baby and husband for two weeks. We speak to Karina about what happened, how hard it was being separated from her daughter Paris and how good it felt to hold her baby for the first time after isolation. "I feel like my purpose in life is competing at a very high level" - in 2018 Robert Wickens was paralysed following an IndyCar crash. Recently he's been competing in the INDYCAR IRacing Challenge, a competitive series that uses simulators. He tells us he sees it as a step towards racing in IndyCar again and how he was determined to and managed to stand at his wedding last September. Anxiety in the A League - play in Australia's A League was suspended in March due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Since play was halted the Professional Footballers Australia say that 58% of players they surveyed have reported symptoms of anxiety while 45% have demonstrated symptoms of depression. There are also rumours the competition's broadcast partner is looking to pull out of their deal. A possible return date of August 1st has now been suggested but with all the uncertainty in the air Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young will join us to discuss the impact the situation is having on players mental health. Extreme E and more opportunities for women in Motorsport - This week a new all-electric off-road race series was launched. When it starts in 2021 each team will field one male and one female driver, meaning men and women will race against each other. Swedish racing driver Mikaela Kottulinsky is one of the few people to have driven the new SUV as she's been working as a test driver for the tyre manufacturer. She'll join us to talk about the new series, what it could mean for women in motorsport and her own background in racing. A lack of PPE means I'm wearing a Scuba Mask - Snooker referee Olivier Marteel is working as an a and e nurse in his native Belgium. He's a radiologist by trade but has answered the call to help on the front line in the fight against coronavirus. He tells us about working in the hospital, a lack of Personal Protective Equipment, and how he's watching old snooker matches to unwind. The long shot that changed a homeless caddie's life - 59 year old Llewellyn Barnes has been been homeless for most of his life and has supported himself by working as a caddie on the golf courses of South Africa. He's also battled substance abuse but last month he made his debut as a player in a professional golf tournament. We'll hear from Llewellyn and also speak to BBC Sport Africa's Celestine Karoney about his remarkable life story. That's Isolation - Former Tottenham midfielder and current Charlton Assistant Manager Johnnie Jackson has been writing and performing songs to fund-raise for cancer charities during the coronavirus lockdown. He'll join us to talk about his idea and he'll perform "That's Isolation", which is a play on the Jam song "That's Entertainment". Sporting Witness - This week we tell the emotional story of how a young girl in Pakistan fought for the right to take part in one of the country’s most popular sports. Ashley Byrne has been talking to Maria Toorpakai Wazir about how she disguised her gender - and risked her life - in order to play professional squash. Photo credit: Karina Leblanc (Getty Images)

When The Sustainability Report first met Karina LeBlanc, she shared a platform with Prince Albert II of Monaco at COP24 in Poland, urging the sports industry to “wake up” and be part of the solution to climate change. It's a subject that became very close to her heart after her home country of Dominica (she moved to Canada when she was eight) was decimated by Hurricane Maria in 2017. During this episode, LeBlanc discusses the role sport can play in addressing climate change, and reveals details about a sustainability task force being established by CONCACAF – the North and Central American football federation – to tackle the challenge using its influence and resources. But most of all, the former Canadian international goalkeeper, who won more than 100 caps and represented her country at five FIFA World Cups, explains her role as head of women's football for the federation and the opportunities and challenges she's navigating to grow the game in a culturally diverse region.LeBlanc talks about CONCACAF's women's football strategy and enthuses about a “game-changing” 2019 FIFA World Cup – a tournament that saw players like Brazil's Marta and Megan Rapinoe of the US become household names by making waves off the field and performing with distinction on it.She also talks about attempting to channel the momentum generated by the landmark tournament to cement women's football as a key part of sporting culture in North and Central America.“I think for us the priority is trying to change the perception of young girls playing soccer,” LeBlanc explains. “In some of our regions it's still believed that young girls can't play. It's a challenge, but it's also an opportunity. And I think what this Women's World Cup has done is really put it at the forefront because a lot of men who thought women couldn't play football had to shut up. Men started watching and started to enjoy it.”

Tea with a Titan: Conversations Steeped in Greatness |Achievement | Olympics | Olympians| Success | Athletes | Entrepreneurs

What we cover: “If you want something badly enough, you don’t make sacrifices. You make choices.” – Rhian Wilkinson Today’s Guest Titan chat is a wee bit of a deviation from the norm – and I am so glad about it. Today, I have a guest co-host in the form of 12-year-old Alex Vietch, herself a serious athlete – she’s a track star and a soccer freak, in a good way. She asked me once if I ever were to interview one of the women from Team Canada, if she could maybe come and say hi, but we did one better. When I found out that Rhian Wilkinson, 3-time Olympian and today’s Guest Titan was up for it, I asked Alex if she wouldn’t mind being my co-host. And, because Alex is one of those kids who personifies carpe diem, of course she was in! The impact of women athletes on the positive self-image of young girls and boys – because they too get to see another definition of what it means to be a powerful, strong woman – cannot be understated. To that end, I want to give a shout-out to two of my young friends on the east coast of Canada as well – a big hello to Elle and Lauren Davidson, sisters who themselves are so into the game of soccer in the province of New Brunswick. It was a bit of a coincidence really, on the day I interviewed Rhian – who is the aunt of one of my daughter’s friends – she was on her way back east to run a camp with teammates and today business colleagues within the scope of their incredible enterprise called iS4 -- Christine Sinclair, Karina LeBlanc, Diana Matheson. Well, turns out, one of my oldest and best friends, Alison, had put her two rock star daughters in the camp – and Alison told me that as a mother, she was moved to tears. That our girls are so privileged to have exposure to these resilient, accomplished women – women who teach girls that they are not to be relegated to the sidelines, that to be strong and powerful is the only option, that to work one another – our sisters on the field and off – is a surefire way to build a network and a life of support and love and memories and empowerment. I was so thrilled to have Alex join us for this important conversation. If you are a parent, this is one for the kids too. If you’re going on a road trip, or running errands, have this one on in the car.  MJDionne.com

Inspiring a Region   Introducing Karina LeBlanc and the Pond-Deshpande Centre We here at the Boiling Point Podcast spend a lot of time discussing triple bottom line businesses, but the question becomes where can I find out how to get involved in this emerging sector of socially minded businesses? This week's guest has just the organization for you to check out. Karina LeBlanc is the executive director of the Pond-Deshpande Centre based out of the University of New Brunswick. Entrepreneurs Gerry Pond, Jaishree Deshpande, and Gururaj Deshpande founded the centre with a mission to act as a catalyst to grow and support a stronger culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in Atlantic Canada. Beyond this, the Pond-Deshpande Centre seeks to simulate young people (and young-minded people) to become active and engaged change makers and leaders in the emerging business-for-good ecosystem. When Karina came on board as the executive director, she already had experience in the Fortune 500, startup, and non-profit space. She decided to take a 90-day “listening” tour to understand how the centre could assist the province and the region. From that tour, she learned that too often young people were disconnected from the concept of becoming an entrepreneur and there was little to no conversation about being a social entrepreneur. Since then, the centre has produced over 100 alumni and has been the catalyst in New Brunswick recent business boom. Check out this week's episode to learn how you could take the same practices to your region.   In this episode Greg tells us about his recent trip to the B Corp Champions retreat in Philadelphia. We hear how Greg and Karina met and how it spun off into the “Millennial Dream”. Karina tells us about the mission and goals of the Pond-Deshpande Centre. We hear about the great work the centre does with students all around New Brunswick and Atlantic Canada. Karina speaks about the misconceptions that some have toward becoming and entrepreneur and what it truly means. We hear how starting the centre was similar to many other start-ups. Greg mentions that he hears all over North America about how the centre does things right. We discuss what makes the centre and New Brunswick different then many other areas. Karina tells us about their accelerator programs. She also lets us in on some authors you should check out if you want to get involved with social entrepreneurship. Greg is truly inspired by Karina and the centre and how it has created a legacy of giving back. Dave agrees that there is so much to learn about the space and thinks it was great that the centre got it start by doing a “listening tour”.   Links - The Pond-Deshpande Centre Website - Pond-Deshpande on Facebook - Pond-Deshpande on Twitter - Millennial Dream Website - Karina on LinkedIn - Karina's Bio - Karina on Twitter     Learn more about your ad choices. The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off a month to this very day in Edmonton (hopefully without any snow). With the eyes of the world's game focusing on Canada for a month or so, we thought we'd get you in the mood with the first of two Canadian Women's National Team special podcasts that we'll be bringing your way before the tournament kicks off. We'll be talking with a number of different aspects to the CWNT - coaches, players and fans. Kicking things off is head coach John Herdman, who talks a little bit about some of the players announced to his World Cup squad and what the thrills of playing at home will mean to him and the team. We kick off our chats with the players with our first ever CWNT "Teammates" section, as Emily Zurrer shares some insights and home truths about the team. Who has the worst dress sense? Who's the most intelligent? And who takes the longest in the shower and in front of the bathroom mirror? All this and more inside info! One name that cropped up a few times in Emily's "Teammates" section (and Karina Leblanc's which you'll hear in another episode) was midfielder Rhian Wilkinson. Now, I have to admit here, Rhian was my particular favourite player we spoke with for these two podcasts. She was great fun to chat with (not the others weren't, but we could have chatted with her for way longer than we did!) and we covered a whole host of topics including what playing a World Cup in Canada means to her, the learning process from tournaments past and whether a coaching role is in her plans after she finishes playing. Away from the playing side we find out about her podcast habits, her childhood without television and playing so many other sports, whose Panini sticker she carried around and we try and get her to write for us here at AFTN (the offer of which is still open Rhi!!). Taking a break from the players for a few minutes, we chat with one of the leading lights of the Voyageurs supporters' group of west, Curva Collective member Zachary Meisenheimer. Zach talks to us about what having the tournament here means to the fans and how they plan to support not just the CWNT but the whole tournament. One of the newest faces in the squad is Allysha Chapman. After only getting her first senior cap last October, the 26-year-old is now set to play a World Cup on home soil. We talk to Allysha about her journey, what it was like coming into such a close knit group, playing in Sweden, how hard it is to keep hold of mascots hands, her love of Maple Leafs and maple butter, and we find out who sent her an email saying "we're watching you"! A player who was touch and go to make the World Cup roster was one of our particular favourite players, Diana Matheson. The midfield dynamo talks to us about her recovery from her two injuries, the x-factor John Herdman brings to the team, what the girls learned from the 2011 World Cup and 2012 Olympic experiences, dealing with the mental pressures and advantages of playing a World Cup on home soil and her Netflix habits. And there's still time for some more jam talk, this time with Erin McLeod and Karina Leblanc, the youngest player on the squad, striker Jessie Fleming and midfielder Desiree Scott. Have a listen!
