On Saturday 9th of October 2021, mother-of-four Nicole Hurley was brutally attacked in her bed; only the man who murdered her wasn't a stranger who'd stalked her or a burglar who'd broken in, but the jealous and controlling boyfriend she'd loved, lay beside, and raised a family with for half of her life. That night, he took her life, orphaned her children and devasted her family, yet - like so many domestic assaults which culminate in a killing – it could have been stopped, if only he'd got himself some help.Date: Sunday 10th of October 2021 at 12:30am (rough time of attack)Location: Block 2, Kingsland Estate, Broxwood Way, Primrose Hill, London, NW8.Victim: 1 (Nicole Ann Hurley)Culprits: 1 (Jason Bell). The book results from 16 years of research, detailing how Winthrop Bell became a successful MI6 spy and a true Renaissance man. Jason Bell explains how Winthrop Bell exposed the Nazis and their plans before the term "Nazi" even existed. The discussion includes Winthrop Bell's actions during WWI and WWII, which helped prevent Hitler's extermination of Jews and other minorities worldwide. The book is incredibly fascinating and rich in history. We also touched on Winston Churchill, and Betsy shared a personal story about my grandparents fleeing Europe during WWI. Jason Bell emphasized the importance of post-war employment to prevent people from joining extremist groups and the necessity of taking threats against minorities seriously.Betsy believes this book should be in high school and college libraries. I highly recommend reading this riveting book! Please visit his website for further information about the book and Jason Bell's speaking engagements. Betsy described this as an incredibly fascinating book rich in history.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/chatting-with-betsy--4211847/support.
Matt Crawford speaks with author Jason Bell about his book, Cracking the Nazi Code. For those that think history is boring this is the book to read. Bell uncovers just declassified information about Winthrop Bell, also known as agent A12. A true Renaissance man Agent A12 uncovered the Nazis before they even had that moniker and also broke Hitler's final solution to the world years before the start of WWII. A truly unbelievable piece of history, this book reads like a spy novel.
Monday's show featured some Bruins talk with sportscaster/author John Leahy who will be showcasing his versatility Wednesday in Concord during an open mic Event at the Bank of New Hampshire Stage at 7. The thrilling true story of Agent A12, the earliest enemy of the Nazis, and the first spy to crack Hitler's deadliest secret code: the framework of the Final Solution. In public life, Dr. Winthrop Bell was a Harvard philosophy professor and wealthy businessman. As an MI6 spy--known as secret agent A12--in Berlin in 1919, he evaded gunfire and shook off pursuers to break open the emerging Nazi conspiracy. His reports, the first warning of the Nazi plot for World War II, went directly to the man known as C, the mysterious founder of MI6, as well as to various prime ministers. But a powerful fascist politician quietly worked to suppress his alerts. Nevertheless, Dr. Bell's intelligence sabotaged the Nazis in ways only now revealed in Jason Bell's Cracking the Nazi Code: The Untold Story of Agent A12 and the Solving of the Holocaust Code (Pegasus Books, 2024). As World War II approached, Bell became a spy once again. In 1939, he was the first to crack Hitler's deadliest secret code: Germany's plan for the Holocaust. At that time, the führer was a popular politician who said he wanted peace. Could anyone believe Bell's shocking warning? Fighting an epic intelligence war from Eastern Europe and Russia to France, Canada, and finally Washington, DC, Agent A12 was a real-life 007, waging a single-handed struggle against fascists bent on destroying the Western world. Without Bell's astounding courage, the Nazis just might have won the war. Jason Bell, PhD, is a professor of philosophy at the University of New Brunswick. He has served as a Fulbright Professor in Germany (at Winthrop Bell's alma mater, the University of Göttingen), and has taught at universities in Belgium, the United States, and Canada. He was the first scholar granted exclusive access to Winthrop Bell's classified espionage papers. He lives in New Brunswick, Canada. Stephen Satkiewicz is an independent scholar whose research areas are related to Civilizational Analysis, Social Complexity, Big History, Historical Sociology, military history, War studies, International Relations, Geopolitics, as well as Russian and East European history. Rural education leaders Bill Chapman and Jason Bell were interviewed at the National Forum to Advance Rural Education conference. As members of state and national rural educator associations, they value the quicker impact and tight-knit community support possible in rural schools. Chapman emphasized rural schools' vital role in expanding students' limited worldviews. If he had a "magic wand," Bell would make legislators truly understand rural challenges differ from urban ones when crafting education policies. They encouraged embracing the strengths of rural schools, not just the struggles. Bush and all that surrounds him. The series was born out of the shared sweets with former first ladies, vacuous portraits of damaged war veterans, verbal tomfoolery on daytime talkshow sets, and the untold suffering of people who happen to have been born in the wrong place and the wrong time. There's the way he both uses power, and does not use his power. There's the way he feeds culture, and the way culture feeds him. Homebrewing has been a topic of discussion many times here on Beer Me, but we haven't had many opportunities to dive into what it looks like to transition from hobbyist to professional. While it is a path that requires tenacity, there are certainly rewarding moments along the way. This week, we welcome to the show Jason Bell, Founder of Living the Dream Brewing in Littleton, Colorado. He takes us through his path in kitchens, restaurants, beverage sales, and finally opening a brewery. His brewing path started with homebrew, and he describes how his mindset needed to shift from homebrewer to commercial brewer and what that entailed. He shares the challenges he constantly considers with brewing consistency, distribution, ensuring staff wellbeing, and brewing for the guest. The road to opening a brewery is often condensed into a quick blurb on a website, "engineer turned brewer", but the story is usually more complicated - and more exciting. Congratulations to the team at Living the Dream Brewing as they head into their anniversary weekend! Nine years! In public life, Canadian Dr Winthrop Bell was a Harvard philosophy professor and wealthy businessman. As MI6 secret agent A12, he evaded gunfire and shook off pursuers to break open the emerging Nazi conspiracy in 1919 Berlin. His reports provided the first warnings of right-wing conspiracies in the German establishment, eventually leading to Hitler and the National Socialists. In the 1930s, after reading Hitler's speeches and books, Bell was warning of the Holocaust. But his warnings fell on deaf ears until the outbreak of war. For this episode, I am joined by Jason Bell. Jason is a professor of philosophy at the University of New Brunswick. He has served as a Fulbright Professor in Germany and was the first scholar granted exclusive access to Winthrop Bell's classified espionage papers. Jason is also the author of Cracking the Nazi Code: The Untold Story of Canada's Greatest Spy, which recounts Bell's story. Patreonpatreon.com/ww2podcast
