Since 2013, Dr. Richards has led various family and child health (FCH) initiatives, including early childhood home visiting, maternal and infant health surveillance, teen pregnancy prevention, preconception health promotion, and fatherhood empowerment. In this episode of The Innovator's Mindset Podcast - A Convo with Melisa, Tori, and Jenny, George Couros welcomes three members of the #bookclubIM group who connected after one of Couros' keynote presentations! Couros reflects on a strategy he uses to help educators make connections and learn from those across the hallway while still making connections with others around the world. The four talk about mitigating learning loss and creating a solution for the problem - too often, the conversation stops at addressing the problem, but these four connect to create solutions! Each guest, Melisa, Tori, and Jenny, share what they are doing for their learners, how they build relationships, and how they have used the ideas shared in The Innovator's Mindset to create their own solutions. In November, the Technecast is hosting the Invitations Series, a series of four conversations by Techne PhD students Judah Attille, Therese Henningsen, Mark Aerial Waller and Astrid Korporaal. Each episode is based on a research encounter with a creative practitioner connected to the field of sound and moving image. Together, the episodes question the relationships between audience, screen, maker and subject. These exchanges invite you to creatively unsettle conventions around objectivity, ethics and participation at a live online social event (Date TBC), hosted by a group of researchers and practitioners involved with moving image. In this first episode, Astrid Korporaal talks to creative practitioner and Birkbeck University Lecturer Dr. Sophie Hope. They discuss the use of performative strategies and role play in research and collaborative art practice, as well as the importance of long-term conversations, time to pause, and thinking in dialogue. *** Images and projects discussed in order of appearance: 1. Sophie Hope and Jenny Richards started Manual Labours in 2013 as a research project exploring our physical and emotional relationships to work. The Global Staffroom grew out of this, and Owen Kelly talks to them about it. The project reconsiders current time-based structures of work (when does work start and end?) and reasserts the significance of the physical (manual) aspect of immaterial, affective and emotional labour. It has gone through five disctinct phases so far. As part of the current phases Jenny and Sophie launched a live video podcast on Twitch.tv called The Global Staffroom. This took the form of “a live podcast we hosted involving conversations and interviews with people about what it feels like to care, be cared for, not be able to care at work. Over 14 weeks during lockdown, every Monday lunchtime we brought together guests from different workforces and geographies to discuss architecture of home-work, racialised experiences of lockdown, emotional labour of health workers, social reproduction and remote working. The podcast was subsequently purchased and archived by The Edinburgh University Art Collection.”

My friend Jenny Richards (married mother of 4, classically trained pianist and composer with an undergraduate and master’s degree from Juilliard in New York) joins us to share and honor the life of her dear younger sister Emilee who died in January 2019.
