In recent months I've become more interested in art. I've bought a gouache set, some watercolour pencils, and found a few ‘how to draw' books we had at home. So far there's very little art being produced. Needing inspiration, I turned to 3 photography friends who are also talented artists.Matt Jones, Matthew Joseph, and Bill Thoo often share their artwork with others in a photography group chat. I've been amazed and inspired by their art this year. Matthew and Bill have produced beautiful works based on their travels. Matt is a prolific artist in his home studio in Thailand, often creating works from photos others post in the chat. Some of the topics of our conversation include:* Which came first for you? Art or photography?* Show and tell 2-3 pieces of art you're proud of* How has art affected or enhanced your photography?* Does making art come at the expense of photography?I hope you find this conversation as interesting as I did. It has renewed my interest in pursuing some form of art - if for no other reason than to get Mrs Murray off my back about my new found supply of neglected art materials! As well as listening to this conversation through your usual podcast app or on Substack, you can also listen / watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpkvnbYZPQwMatt Jones [SOCIAL LINKS REDACTED] Matthew Josepeh instagram.com/fotodudenz Bill Thoo instagram.com/billthoo MY SUBSTACK NEWSLETTER Sign up for my FREE Substack photography newsletter: https://mattlovescameras.substack.com/ Get full access to Matt Loves Cameras at mattlovescameras.substack.com/subscribe
Joseph is often overlooked in the Christmas story. Matthew 1.18-25 explains how the earthly father of Jesus learns that his soon-to-be wife Mary is pregnant - and he is not the father. How will he respond? And what is God showing us through this passage of Scripture?

Matthew Joseph is the man 'coaching the coaches' at Arsenal Football Club's Academy. Matthew played as an Arsenal and England youth team player, gaining an Arsenal pro contract at eighteen. However, at nineteen he was released by Arsenal, a decision that he says broke his heart. He went on to play over 400 games in English League Football for Cambridge United and Leyton Orient before retiring and becoming a coach at the FA. In 2022 Matthew completed a career circle, rejoining Arsenal to oversee the Academy Coaching staff. Danno caught up with Matthew to talk about his playing career, his role now as Academy Coach Developer at Arsenal F.C. and what it looks like to live as a Christian in the high-pressure world that is professional football. (1:15) How do your sport and faith connect? (2:08) What's it like to be released from a Football Academy? (8:27) Coping with being released. (11:22) Identity in retirement and becoming a Christian (15:33) Why do you want to be a coach? Main Idea: God uses painful moments to help us die to our temporary kingdoms so we may LIVE fully for His Kingdom. Today's Scripture (John 19:38-42) 1. The darkness of this world cannot & will not overcome the Light of God. In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5 2. No matter what happens, Jesus is still king and his kingdom is coming. Verse 38, “After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.” Matthew: Joseph was a rich man who was a disciple of Jesus. Mark: Joseph was a respected member of the council, who was looking for the kingdom of God. Luke: Joseph, a member of the (Sanhedrin) council, a good and righteous man who did not consent to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. John: Joseph was a disciple of Jesus but in secret for fear of the Jews. 3. Jesus' burial is the assurance that he has conquered death and is able to give everlasting life. v41-42 John 12:24 “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone: but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away and the sea was no more. I saw the holy city, coming down out of heaven from God. I heard a loud voice saying Behold the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them and they will be his people. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain… the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. Revelations 21:1-4,23
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” In today's Gospel, Joseph hears the angel of the Lord and does as he commands. Joseph is the first to take Mary into his home; since then, innumerable Christians throughout history have taken Mary into their homes. Mary's yes ushered in God's new creation through Christ; Joseph's yes brought Mary into the heart of his home and into the center of salvation and redemption for all people. To hear and believe what the angel of the Lord said, Joseph had to put aside fear and, like Mary, begin to ponder the name above all names: Jesus. How can I not respond in kind as Joseph did? God, give me the grace to comprehend what it means to ask Mary into my home. In doing that, I know there is no guarantee of consolation or receiving whatever I pray for. Instead, the more I ask Mary to intercede for me, the more things will be shaken up as she redirects me to her son. At the Wedding at Cana, Mary said of Jesus to the servers: “Do whatever he says.” And so Jesus began his public ministry, which led to his passion, death, and resurrection. Hear me, God, and help me recall: when the day's challenges are in full force and multiple imperatives become entangled with one another, let me be unafraid and do as Joseph did by inviting Mary into the heart of the conflict. Stay with me, Lord; let me be obedient to you, as Joseph was in his faithful care of Mary and Jesus. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. In this episode, we talk to Mathew Joseph. He's a 3rd Generation Entrepreneur who was the Marketing Director at Duroflex before he started a D2C Mattress Brand called Sleepyhead. So, mattresses. It's one of those ‘boring' and ‘unsexy' industries and as we've often discussed on the podcast, it's perfect for building a large, profitable business. The mattress industry in India is estimated to be 12,000 Crores Industry of which 60% is still Unorganized. Traditionally, 3 players dominated the industry, Kurl-on, Duroflex and Sleepwell. All legacy companies built over decades. Then between 2016-2018, atleast 10 new D2C Mattress brands popped up. Some of which have survived and grown to more than 200 Crores in revenue in the last 5 years! Talk about Disruption! What makes today's episode interesting is that we got a chance to talk to Matthew Joseph who not only is the 3rd generation entrepreneur of the family run Duroflex but he's also the founder of a D2C Mattress brand called Sleepyhead! What makes his journey fascinating is that he saw the upcoming disruption from the online players and instead of fighting to defend the legacy brand of duroflex, he set up a completely new brand and business entity to start Sleepyhead! In the conversation today, we talk about the Mattress industry, the value chain and manufacturing process of mattresses, the different types of mattresses, the reason D2C Mattress Industry scaled so well over the last 3 years, how he has built Sleepyhead's brand and most importantly, which is his favorite mattress! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you like the content we create, I need 30 seconds of your time to help us reach more people. On this week's show, I interviewed Matthew Joseph, founder of Coastal Hotel Properties and West Avenue Realty. Matt reached out to me to share his story. I am approached multiple times per week by potential guests and their PR firms to come on my show. I really try and focus on active investors who I think will be of most benefit to you the listener. I believe Matt is definitely one of those investors! When I asked Matt about his investment experience, he told me that he started as a residential broker in 2005 in Miami where he sold over $300m of apartments. Then, he started working with investors flipping condos in 2009-2013 and then got into selling luxury. He said he realized the only way to get ahead is to own real estate, so he bought land on Biscayne Blvd. for $250k in 2006 and flipped it for $1.2m in 2013. Then he was hooked. He started syndicating and finding deals. He found a motel deal in 2015 on Craigslist, and created a cool niche by taking old roadside motels and making them cool. He'll talk about how he structured his first deal with just a deposit down. Matt now has 18 years of direct real estate investment and sales experience. Today CHP is a privately held, fully integrated, entrepreneurial real estate and hotel management company that develops, acquires, and operates hospitality assets. CHP manages 400 units, 50 million portfolios throughout Florida and North Carolina. CHP is in the process of creating a new extended-stay brand called Coastal Suites. What I really liked about Matt's interview was how he spoke about being a student of the game and the importance of being a constant learner. He also talked about how he looks at assets from the inside out to figure out how best to reposition. I know that you'll get a lot out of this episode. The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. What would you do if I told you that the whole story behind this patriotic event was steeped in tyranny, racism, and slavery? To be honest, I was shocked at first too. During a recent trip to San Antonio, my wife and I decided to visit the Alamo. We're nerds and we love exploring historical spaces like this while also attempting to uncover any untold truths that may be waiting to be discovered. And what a truth we found! After touring the site we continued our exploration of the city and happened to stumble across a small museum, SAAACAM (say-cam) where we learned a disturbing reality that neither of us had ever considered. Not only did the Alamo serve as a slave auction site, but that the events leading up to the battle were fueled, in large part, by slavery. During this episode, I recount my reactions and what I realized as I found myself digging deeper into this newfound truth. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast.
An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. -- In this episode, I chat with Ryan Tibbens, a 16 year classroom veteran in the middle of his first year teaching in a brand-new 100% distance learning program. His work with high school juniors and seniors has helped propel students to a variety of excellent universities and fulfilling careers. Outside of school, Ryan operates Tibbens Education Services & Tutoring, a consulting and tutoring venture specializing in college admissions essays, AP prep, writing instruction, and counseling parents. Mr. Tibbens also hosts and produces the ClassCast Podcast, which blends philosophy, pedagogy, policy, and people into great discussions about improving education. He lives in northern Virginia with his wife and two (soon-to-be three) children. During our conversation, we talked about Ryan's new role and the perceptions around remote learning. We recognized that remote learning should be a choice. There are some students who do well in the environment while others struggle. Yet, we often talk about remote learning as an all or nothing approach to education. Ryan also shared the possibilities that remote learning can offer students who want to explore opportunities that are limited through traditional school practices. Imagine being able to travel the country playing for a professional sports team while still attending class. We continue by exploring methods to make remote learning successful for both students and teachers engaged in this approach. Now, this isn't an extended commercial or promotion for remote learning but rather an exploration of a style of teaching and learning that has undoubtedly changed the face of education.
An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. -- In this episode, I chat with Sandra Donaghue, who has served in education for over 30 years. She has been a teacher for 16 years, a principal for 15 years, and has served as an Instructor for the Principal Qualifications Course for 10 years. In addition to education, Sandra loves music and musical theatre. She has taught dance for years and even performed in musicals while in high school. Sandra is a Code Breaker Ambassador and works closely with Matthew Joseph on a number of projects and is currently co-authoring a book on leadership. During our conversation Sandra brought up a powerful sentiment - everyone with whom we interact should walk away better because of the experience. While this may sound a bit conceited, the truth is that we should strive to improve those around us at every opportunity. We discussed how this could look with the students in our building by adopting a lens of possibility and allowing them the opportunities to become empowered participants within their schools. Sandra encourages educators to step out of their comfort zones, the real reason why we continue to practice antiquated approaches, and to engage in some reflection activities to identify areas of improvement. Yes, it requires relationships. Yes, it requires vulnerability. Yes, it may be challenging. But it is so well worth it. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast.
An urban educator for more than 15 years, a current school principal in Chicago, an educational consultant, an equity advocate, and the co-host of Inside The Principal's Office. -- Before we jump into today's episode I wanted to tell you about a super exciting event that I have coming up and I would love for you to be in attendance. As I mentioned in the intro to the show, I am the co-host of Inside the Principal's Office, a web series that runs live on the first and third Saturday of each month. During the show my co-host, Michael McWilliams, and I bring on other educational leaders and discuss the most pressing issues and topics facing us today. We also have a facebook group where educators can connect and learn from each other. Well this summer, we are planning to host an event where we can get together in person. That's right. Not another zoom. Not another google meet. But live. Even better? Its only $35! So join us in Dallas for a networking reception on Friday, July 30th followed by a day of activities on Saturday, July 31st. Stop by our twitter page, join us on facebook, or check out an upcoming episode for more information. I look forward to finally meeting you. -- In this episode, I chat with Matthew Joseph, who currently serves as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment in Leicester Public Schools. He has been a school and district leader in many capacities in public education over his 27 years in the field such as the Director of Digital Learning and Innovation, elementary school principal, classroom teacher, and district professional development specialist. During our conversation, we talked about conflicting parallels that exist with educational leadership. We, as administrators, encourage teachers to adopt a growth mindset and to take risks in their classrooms and yet we utilize punitive evaluation systems that often discourage the very behavior we would like to see. Matthew insisted that we need to develop a system that balances both accountability and innovation so that teachers can move from lessons to experiences and would be more willing to celebrate the attempts of their students as opposed to being focused solely on results. We also discussed the power of reflection … to know oneself so that we can walk in our purpose. -- I want to thank you for listening to The Counter Narrative Podcast. If you like what you are hearing, please be sure to like, subscribe, and of course share it with friends and family. I'd also love to hear your thoughts about the show so please leave a comment or two as well. Punk Rock Collaboration 13 with Matt Joseph One of the awesome things we would see in punk is at shows when musicians from different bands would join forces on stage or when one of your favorite punk singers would lend their growl to some gang vocals on another band's record. We wanted to create that same thing here at PRC. On this punk rock collaboration, Josh and Mike sit down and chat with Matthew Joseph, a district leader in curriculum and instruction, a tech guru, and author of "Modern Mentor" and "The Power of Us." We dive into a discussion about the importance of mentors in education and how anyone on a campus can help fill that role! Today's MIND Mental Health podcast episode is all about Discussing Depression: How it manifests differently in people, ways to identify depression in yourself and others, shocking statistics, and both positive and negative coping skills. Please join our hosts, Matthew Joseph and Kristen Kluber (now a second-year medical student), as they speak openly about their personal experiences with depression and battle to fight stigmas. They provide resources for people experiencing depression as well as things people can do to help their friends and loved ones. At the end of the episode, they challenge their listeners with three things they can do daily for self-reflection. I encourage everybody to listen because it is common for healthcare students to experience depressive symptoms throughout their time in school. Medical students that reported high levels of stress during first-year increase their odds of experiencing depressive symptoms by 49% during fourth year. Also, those with little social support during first year are 44% more likely to show signs of depression in 4th year. Help us break down the walls of stigma surrounding depression! I almost dropped an Xpan. No, that's not a joke, it's the truth. In July 2019, podcaster, photographer, and Sunny 16 helper Matthew Joseph flew up to Brisbane for a few days and we met up for a photo walk. Matthew gave his Xpan to shoot with when the incident occurred. Was it my clumsiness that almost saw a legendary camera smash to the floor of the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art? Or was it Matthew's inability to put a camera strap on properly? Keep listening and find out. Also keep listening for details of the Matt Loves Cameras plastic pano challenge! Welcome to The Dirty Bits of History. I’m Tawny Platis, a professional voice actor, who gives a casual, and comedic southern Californian retelling of the sexy, scandalous, salacious, fierce, funny, and freaky bits of history your teacher probably left out. Stay tuned after the episode or take a peek at the show notes for The Dirty Bits After Dark: Catching Up With Tawny and George, our contact info, coming attractions, and a special thank you message to our producers. For commercial-free episodes, visit Patreon.com/DirtyBits. Now, enjoy the show. If you aren’t familiar with Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald, they were writers and socialites who became the poster children of what we now call, “The Jazz Age.” Scott seems to be best known for writing, “The Great Gatsby” and less well known for mercilessly plagiarizing his wife, Zelda. They’re both notorious for alcoholism, infidelity, mental illness, and just generally causing a scene in general during the 1920s and 30’s.After nearly a century, why are we still so obsessed with the artists? What is it about Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald that has kept them relevant generation after generation? The academic answer would be that we remain fascinated by the duality of narcissistic geniuses and reckless self-destruction. I personally find the answer to be that America has always loved to stop and gawk at a gnarly trainwreck. And the Fitzgeralds were the gnarliest of trainwrecks. Per usge, to better understand what’s going on here and get the full picture, we have to go back to the very beginning. And because she got the shit end of the stick for so long, I’m starting out with Zelda. If anything sounded goofy in this episode, it probably was! Don’t take my word for it - always do your own research and make sure what you’re reading is from a verified, reputable, and academic source.Sources:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2322760/The-Great-Gatsbys-heartbreaker-F-Scott-Fitzgeralds-fatal-obsession-love-inspiration.htmlDinitia Smith (September 8, 2003).
