Success Late, Late, Late Night with Jim Short, fabulous comedian from David Letterman, Conan O'Brien and winner of the San Francisco International Stand Up Comic Competition. Laughter is the best medicine, so get ready for a good dose. Hear Jim's story, his life in Texas and Australia, and his enduring journey in comedy.
Season Two of It's Your Call podcast begins with a conversation with Jim Short, a retired clergy person who has an extensive and interesting career in ministry, including years as a chaplain with the Reserves and the Fire Department. Jim grew up in a committed church family, and liked to say he was "United Church in my mother's womb." Yet, his exposure to ministers during the 1970s, when some of the cracks that were starting to appear in the assumed "glamour" of the role, convinced him that that wasn't what he wanted to do. But then a mystical experience changed his mind and opened him to hearing God's call to ministry. He has re-examined this call numerous times through the years to make sure it was still legitimate, and a cloud of witnesses have surrounded and supported him through this life-long discernment and all the challenges that come with ministry. Jim also discusses the difficulties of the transition to retirement, and the opportunities this presents to consider a needed role for elders in The United Church of Canada. It's Your Call is a podcast from the Office of Vocation of The United Church of Canada. It is available on Google Podcasts, Spotify, Apple, and other podcast distributors.
Grateful and humbled to announce Episode 4 of the “Quest for Success Podcast” w/ the great Jim Short. We caught up with Jim and had an absolutely incredible and humbling conversation with the former @nevadafootball standout, High School Teacher, coach and one of the greatest, most humble men you'll ever meet. We call him coach, teacher, friend and a role model.—Jim Short grew up in the small town of Poplar, California. When Jim entered Monache High School in 1977, his childhood friend Jeff Brown was already blazing the sports trail, so Jim did what Jeff had, and became a three-sport athlete. By his sophomore year, Jim was playing at the varsity level in football, wrestling, and baseball. By his senior year, he was becoming an accomplished athlete and earning recognition in the East Yosemite League and as an All-Valley recipient. He received the Double M Award, or Male Athlete of the Year, that same year. Having been positively influenced by many special men and women at Monache, he aspired to play at the college level. Signing with Cal Poly Pomona, he began playing under the famed NFL quarterback, Roman Gabriel. Jim was named first team all-conference after his sophomore year. When Pomona decided to drop its football program, Short took the initiative to keep on playing and transferred to the University of Nevada. While there, they won the Big Sky Championship under the College Hall of Fame Coach, Chris Ault, and Jim earned many additional individual player awards including Player of the Week against Boise State and the Hammer Award his senior year. Jim also played alongside future NFL players before earning his college degree. Jim currently lives just outside of Porterville with his wife, Quinanne. They have three daughters, Devin, Zander, and Bryn, all of whom also graduated from Monache. Jim teaches and coaches at Monache. He was honored to coach Monache's first state wrestling champion in 2006 and is currently the girls' wrestling head coach.—Listen on any podcasting platform.INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/questforsuccess_/YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0IMr0SYn7XbkEMcivFyeAg/featured

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner, your host for the duration of this extra-stuffed edition of Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Thank you for deciding to choose us for the next bit of listening entertainment in your life. On the topics of life AND decisions I'd like to point out how the two are inexorably entwined. Life is full of decisions. Sometimes I have to make the agonizing choice of doing anything other than spending time with my newborn son. As a result, most of the work I get done is at night when he is sleeping. That's my decision to make and I happily make it. I've also decided to make an entire episode comprised of clips that were found with the help of our friends at the Laughable app because it helped me find some fantastic shows to clip for you this episode. I've got clips from Gettin' Better with Ron Funches, Oprah's Master Class: The Podcast, CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley, The Mike Lupica Podcast, Congratulations with Chris D'Elia, and The New Yorker Radio Hour. I've also got a double dose of raging moderate Will Durst's Burst O' Durst segment. I will be reading another selection from our sponsor TrumPoetry.com. And in this episode we introduce a special new segment from our very own Executive Producer Marc Hershon called "Let's Review", where he reads recent reviews he's written for "This Week in Comedy Podcasts" on Vulture.com. This episode he's covering Girls Gotta Eat and Inside Conan. THE CLIPS Oprah's Master Class: The Podcast In this episode, Emmy-, Grammy-, Oscar- and Tony-winning actress, TV host and stand-up comic Whoopi Goldberg talks with Oprah Winfrey candidly about her childhood in New York City, her most valuable life lessons and her defining screen roles. Whoopi explains how she landed her two most iconic roles: Celie in "The Color Purple" and Oda Mae Brown in "Ghost." She shares how she learned to accept success and open up doors of opportunity in her life. Whoopi also describes the moment she made peace with her mother's death. In our clip, Whoopi discusses her mother's approach to parenting. Gettin' Better with Ron Funches After listening to Hannah Gadsby's episode of Monsters of Talk (a now-defunct soundcast hosted by Margaret Cho and Jim Short), I really wanted to find a soundcast that featured some more conversation with Margaret Cho. Thanks to the Laughable App I found Gettin' Better, hosted by Ron Funches. In our featured clip Laugh-In is discussed as well as Margaret's early comic role models as well as her current favorite comedy personalities. The New Yorker Radio Hour David Remnick is joined by The New Yorker's award-winning writers, editors and artists to present a weekly mix of profiles, storytelling, and insightful conversations about the issues that matter — plus an occasional blast of comic genius from the magazine's legendary Shouts and Murmurs page. Our clip is from the episode that dropped on November 23rd last year (2018), entitled "Jim Carrey Doesn't Exist (According to Jim Carrey)". The Mike Lupica Podcast Mike Lupica, one of the most prominent columnists in America, brings his experience and insider's knowledge, coupled with a provocative presentation that takes an uncompromising look at the tumultuous worlds of professional sports, and politics to this weekly podcast. Every week join Mike and a special guest as they tackle the topics of today! The clip we're featuring is from Mike's chat with Larry David back in 2017. CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley is the top-rated Sunday morning news program in all the key demos, and features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science, Americana and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. From May of last year, Lee Cowan hosts this part of the soundcast. I was specifically looking to clip the segment with two of my all-time favorite funny people, Steve Martin and Martin Short…so I did. Congratulations with Chris D'Elia Comedian and actor Chris D'Elia sits down every week to talk about what's on his mind. THe clip we're featuring comes from Epi116, "Open Up the Limit", where Chris responds to the local Albuquerque news covering his reaction from the week previous. And that's the lineup for this episode. There only remains for me to thank you for making us your destination listening for however long this episode turns out to be. I can't emphasise more the gratitude I feel every time you decide to make the decision to listen. If you could do this show a solid and leave us a review on iTunes it would really help us out. It's another type of word-of-mouth that is apparently very effective in helping us grow our audience and eventually perhaps landing us a real sponsor. When you tell others about us, you show us love in that particular fashion that is what we mean when we gently implore you to Please... Pass The Succotash? — Tyson Saner

Joining us this week is the great Australian comedian Jim Short, who brings us a whopper of a classic, The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas’ timeless pillar of western literature, which Jim claims to have read in it’s entirety. Next, we get a positive recommendation for ‘Bright Shiny Morning’, the post-modern novel of contemporary and historical Los Angeles by James Frey that followed his controversial memoir “A Million Little Pieces”. Finally, we get to discuss one of my favorite authors and one of my favorite books based on one of my favorite films, Charles Bukowski’s ‘Hollywood’, his fictionalized version of the making of the movie ‘Barfly’. (Hint, I liked it!) And as always, we end up with a “bonus recommendation” when the conversation brings us to downtown LA and I recommend ‘Ask The Dust’ by John Fante.!

Thinking of retirement at 65? Think again... The pension funds in many large corporations (e.g., Boeing, Lockheed Martin, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, etc.) have been “Over Funded” because many “late retirees” who keep-on working into their old age and retire late after the age of 65 tend to die within two years after their retirements. In other words, many of these late retirees do not live long enough to collect all their fair shares of pension money such that they leave a lot of extra-unused money in the pension funds resulting in the over-funded pension funds. This indicates that for people retired at the age of 50, their average life span is 86; whereas for people retired at the age of 65, their average life span is only 66.8. An important conclusion from this study is that for every year one works beyond age 55, one loses 2 years of life span on average. The Boeing experience is that employees retiring at age of 65 receive pension checks for only 18 months, on average, prior to death. Similarly, the Lockheed experience is that employees retiring at age of 65 receive pension checks for only 17 months, on average, prior to death. Dr. David T. Chai indicated that the Bell Labs experience is similar to those of Boeing and Lockheed based on the casual observation from the Newsletters of Bell Lab retirees. A retiree from Ford Motor told Dr. Paul Tien-Lin Ho that the experience from Ford Motor is also similar to those in Boeing and Lockheed. Dr. Ephrem (Siao Chung) Cheng provided the important results in the following Table 1 and the associated chart from an actuarial study of life span vs. age at retirement. The study was based on the number of pension checks sent to retirees of Boeing Aerospace. The objective of the Market Trader Training program is to teach students to trade safely and profitably.
