Today's show is dedicated to discussing the state of the US empire today. Contrary to some on the left, it is not about to collapse. But it is in a state of intensifying decline. Today's show reviews these two themes and considers the evidence for collapse vs. decline. A brief history how empires extract wealth from their dependencies (plunder, occupation, colonialism, unequal trade, financial imperialism, etc.) is discussed. A review of US institutions of Empire and how the US practices imperial dominance follows. Examples of institutional decline and failing practices are discussed: the US $, SWIFT payments system, IMF, World Bank, fiscal crisis of US empire and economy (deficits, debt, global dollar recycling, etc), contradictions in US monetary policies (why low interest rates don't stimulate growth and high rates don't dampen inflation), decline of US soft power, rise of the BRICS and global South, and chronic slow growth of US economy since 2008 as well as US political, social and ideological indicators of decline. (Discussion is based on Dr. Rasmus's forthcoming new book, 'Twilight of American Imperialism', the introductory chapter of which will be posted on his blog, http://jackrasmus.com on June 1, 2025)

Trump is once again at the head of the world's strongest imperialist power. One month after his innauguration, he has already provoked a trade war with Canada and Mexico, and threatened to invade Panama and Greenland. His presidency has ushered in a new period of uncertainty and chaos into politics all over the world. As revolutionary communists, we must understand what Trump's actions represent on a world stage, and how his approach to American foreign policy reflects the relative decline of American Imperialism on the world stage, alongside the rise of smaller regional powers capable of challenging American influence. For that reason we are proud to releasse a presentation by Jorge Martín, a leading member of the Revolutionary Communist International, from the 2025 Montreal Marxist Winter School on Trump and the Crisis of American Imperialism. What to read next:Lenin's Selected Writings on Imperialist WarColossus: The Rise and Decline of US Imperialism

This is the third part of our series on the History of US Imperialism, this time on American Imperialism during and immediately after WW2. During this time the United States was an imperialist power that gained from its participation in, and played a progressive role in, the United Front with other allies, including the Soviet Union, to defeat the fascist Axis powers. We'll also cover how American businessmen collaborated with the Nazis, and how the United States and other western imperialists absorbed Nazis after the war. The recent events in Israel have added to an already heated discussion around US foreign policy and war. Hamas committed evil atrocities when they launched a deadly attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country is now at war, and cut off electricity and utilities to Gaza. They gave notice to northern Gaza telling them to evacuate as Israel prepared a ground invasion. As this unfolds, the media and politicians are out there making proclamations about how the US must support Israel. Others point to the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians in Gaza and say Israel deserved this, or at least brought this on themselves (the term libertarians use is "blowback". Regarding the truth of this specific conflict, I will be diving into that soon. I have Kyle Anzalone coming on the show next week to discuss the history and current political drives at play in this conflict between Israel and Hamas. But before we even go there, I think I need to take the time to make some things clear. I am Anti-War. And I think the rightful role of the Church and as followers of Christ is to be staunchly, as the intro to this podcast says, against both war and empire. So in this episode, I make again the case for why I think the Gospel message of Christ's work on the Cross and proclamation of the Kingdom of God should lead Christians who aim for their faith to impact ALL of their beliefs and actions to oppose war and be ever vigilant in pursuing peace here on Earth. The Russia-Ukraine war has been stripped out of its historical context. Most importantly, it conceals the role of American imperialism in preparing and deliberately instigating the conflict. The truth is that the conflict was not a sudden event, but a well-planned agenda by the US imperialist government. They instigated the coup that overthrew Ukraine's democratically elected government, and then they used Ukraine as a pawn in their geopolitical game against Russia. For Business inquiries, please go to ➡︎ show@geopoliticsinconflict.com⏰ LIVE STREAM SCHEDULE:Tuesday  and Thursday 10:00 AM CST /11AM ET/8AM PST/ 3PM GMT

Debates around what's traditional or authentic are constantly spinning in the culinary world— so much so that numerous organizations have been formed to protect the authenticity of various dishes and production methods. In Mezcal's case, there is an organization whose name translates to The Mexican Regulatory Council for the Quality of Mezcal. The stated purpose of this group, and others like it, is to uphold quality through strict regulations and guidelines. But how do these regulations potentially push people out? This week on Meat and Three, we're unpacking the meaning of authenticity in the culinary world. We explore the pressure authenticity can have on individuals and how there may be more than one “right” version of the way to cook a dish.  Further Reading:Learn more about researcher Kathleen Ja Sook Bergquist here.Jenny Herman is a doctoral fellow in the Cultural Studies department at KU Leuven in Belgium. The legitimacy of a US-led global order has been taken for granted by many in political, diplomatic and intellectual circles in the United States and even beyond. Yet this narrative of a postwar liberal order sits uncomfortably with a long history of imperial expansion and settler-colonial practices that the US has pursued over the centuries. Host Ben Zdencanovic sits down with Aziz Rana, a scholar of US constitutionalism, race, and empire at Cornell Law School, to discuss the politics of racial and cultural hierarchy that have been integral to American engagement with the world. From the days of frontier expansion and Wilsonian internationalism to the postwar push for modernization and a ‘rules-based-order', arguments for American primacy have been deeply informed by ideas and practices of supremacy.  How has America's imperial stance abroad impacted its domestic politics? Is there any prospect of forging an inclusive and progressive American foreign policy? And why must a politics of anti-imperialism require an equally strong commitment to anti-authoritarianism as well? These are the questions that guide this conversation between two scholars of the US in the world.

Speaking of Disney – the company that has forced us “to share the same formative dreams” – film critic Richard Schickel writes, “As capitalism, it is a work of genius; as culture, it is mostly a horror.” In this episode, I speak with cartoonist and educator Kane Lynch, who walks us through the story of Walt Disney, the birth of the Disney empire, and the many ways the company has helped to export capitalist ideology around the globe. Tune in to hear how Disney cartoons were used as propaganda during WWII and later as a means of combating the spread of communism in Latin America. Kane Lynch is a cartoonist and educator whose non-fiction and journalism comics and illustrations have appeared on The Nib, Slate, and Psychology Today and in the 2020 graphic novel Guantanamo Voices. He also has a kids' graphic novel coming out in 2024 titled First Steps. Follow him on Instagram and Twitter, and check out his website here. .I'm brokenhearted to report that the creator of our amazing intro song, Tim Hunt, (a.k.a. DRMWVR), recently suffered a terrible accident.  He fell from a balcony, smashing 5 vertebrae and 7 ribs. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down, unable to feel or move his legs. While he is going to fight like hell for the chance to walk again, the mental, logistical, and financial challenges in front of him are insanely daunting. Everything that has the potential to give Tim the best chances of recovery is ridiculously expensive, including rent near his rehab center and a $30,000 electrode machine that will allow him to keep exercising his legs once he leaves the facility. If any of you have the ability to contribute to Tim's mutual aid fund,  it would do so much to help Tim take on the many challenges that lie ahead. I would appreciate it so much! You can contribute through his GoFundMe page right here, or through the link in his bio! Follow Tim on Instagram to see his art and watch his inspirational healing journey. I'm constantly being blown away by his strength in the face of adversity. I can barely navigate this capitalist hellscape on a good day! The 1800s were an era of big questions, many of which we answered in cruel and selfish ways. Is one race better than another? Is one religion? If so, which one? In what ways? Is one economic system better than another? Is one system of governance like a democratic republic like the US, or socialist, or monarchy, theocracy, communism, best? Some people answered these questions with a resounding "yes". But if we think our people and ways are better than anyone else's, what responsibility do we have to spread those things? Men like Henry Cabot Lodge and Theodore Roosevelt were firm believers in social Darwinism, though their vision of it meant teaching those less "civilized" people our ways. And they were okay with the United States taking power over them. Meanwhile, there were men like William Jennings Bryan who refused to think of others in social Darwinism terms. He spent years fighting that dark philosophy, ultimately prosecuting the Scopes Monkey trial to stop the spread of social Darwinism. But the seeds of eugenics were planted. Caught in the middle were the people of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Phillippines, and other colonies of the Spanish empire. Spain was busy imprisoning Cubans in concentration camps. Their ruthless behavior toward America's neighbors caught the attention of the US Senate, which was already champing at the bit for a fight. Men in the United States were worried about their waning influence on society. Groups bellyached about how men were not men any more thanks to cities and offices. In the minds of some, war was the answer to weak-willed men. And Spain provided that war. Our guest today is Paul T. McCartney author of “Power and Progress: American National Identity, the War of 1898, and the Rise of American Imperialism”. He teaches at Towson University. Discussion Questions: Do you believe your people are somehow superior to another people group? Why? Does that sound like an attitude Jesus would have? If you are somehow superior, what is your responsibility to other people? Should the US help people who are being oppressed around the world? When should we intervene? Do you think that men are in decline? If so, what is the answer to that? Do you better relate to Teddy Roosevelt or William Jennings Bryan when it comes to war? Or are you a pacifist? How would Jesus have responded to the cruelty of Spain? What do you think about social Darwinism? With the Russian invasion of Ukraine images of war in Europe dominate the news, and questions rage about the political failure to both prevent and end the atrocities. Amol Rajan discusses the political forces that have allowed the West to flourish and the cracks that are beginning to widen. Developed in the wake of European wars of religion and nationalism, Liberalism was designed as a system to govern diverse societies, with a strong emphasis on the rights of individuals, equality and the rule of law. In Liberalism and Its Discontents Francis Fukuyama argues for a return to its classical form but shows how attacks from both the left and right have left it in a state of crisis. Europe's dependence on Russian oil is central to Helen Thompson's book, Disorder: Hard Times in the 21st Century. She looks back at the historical origins of today's overlapping geopolitical, economic and political failures. Shifts in the global balance of power in the 19th century between Old Europe and the New World of American Imperialism are at the heart of Edward Shawcross's extraordinary tale. He describes the ignoble end of a Habsburg Archduke, aided by Napoleon III, who crossed the world to become The Last Emperor of Mexico.
