Dr. Jimmy Lin is a cancer genomics researcher and entrepreneur who founded The Rare Genomics Institute, a nonprofit organization committed to aiding patients and families affected by rare diseases. He also currently serves as the Chief Scientific Officer at Freenome, an AI genomics company, where he's developing a blood test to enable the early detection of colorectal cancer. Jimmy joins the podcast to discuss his experience mapping the cancer genome, his spiritual journey, and why he identifies as a 'scientific doxologist.'
Jimmy Lin calls himself a scientific doxologist. The science part of that title describes his work to find cures and treatments for cancer and rare diseases and he talks about the real progress that has been made to that end. But for him, the science is merely his path toward doxology, the praise of God, and in this way, his work becomes a kind of hymn of praise. One of the foundational practices of faith, prayer is an essential part of Christian life. But what is prayer? How does it work? Can we see its effects? Does science have anything to tell us about prayer? In this episode on prayer, Language of God producer Colin Hoogerwerf explores the relationship between science and prayer with Dr. David Myers, journalist Barbara Bradley Hagerty, author Philip Yancey, and Dr. Jimmy Lin. They discuss a 1997 Harvard experiment meant to measure the effects of prayer, the findings of neurotheology, and why we should pray at all. By melding their personal prayer lives with their research, our guests find a more robust understanding of the sacred practice. Read David Myers’ response to the Harvard Prayer Experiment here. Guest: C. Jimmy Lin, M.D., Ph.D, Founder of the Rare Genomics Institute (RGI) Bio and Contact Info There are an estimated 7,000 rare diseases. In the U.S., a rare disease is defined as one affecting less that 200,000 people, or 1 in 1,500 of the American population. Rare diseases are often referred to as neglected diseases because over the years they have not received the same amount of research as a common disease like cancer.
The Transverse Myelitis Association collaborated with Rare Genomics Institute to host an “Ask the Experts Podcast”. Rare Genomics Institiute (RGI) is a non-profit organization that gives families afflicted by rare genetic disorders access to genome sequencing and expert analysis. RGI helps patients with orphan diseases initiate and fund personalized research projects through a dedicated crowd-funding platform and a highly selective network of leading academic scientists and commercial institutions across the globe. Our first Ask the Expert Podcast featuring Dr. Benjamin Greenberg and Dr. Allen DeSena from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, moderated by RGI's president, Dr. Jimmy Lin was held on February 7, 2013 at 7 pm EST.The podcast started with a 30-minute discussion of recent developments in technology applicable to rare diseases. Dr. Cathleen Lutz from The Jackson Laboratory discussed how mice are used in scientific research as models for developments in genomics and b
