In this episode I am joined by Gareth Melia from Melia Marketing and Design (meliamarketing.com) a Company based in Christchurch which has a global reach in both its audience and customer base. Gareth downloaded his years of experience in the web design space direct to me during our wide-ranging conversation. Not only did I learn some new slang, “techno babble” but I also learned about the key ingredients that strong and persuasive websites need to embed. The reality is that most businesses have and need a website. A website acts like a silent digital gateway for your business whether it be selling products or services. Your website is often the first impression that most people will have of your business, and we all know that first impressions are critical in all walks of life and business. A website needs to be kept up to date and project your brand in a compelling way with appropriate calls to action. When was the last time you looked at your website? Gareth really opened my eyes on the potential returns that await those who get it done right. If your website is little old and tired or your ‘bounce rate' is too high and engagement is flagging, then give this episode a listen! Is there a topic you want covered or a person you want to hear from? In this episode I am joined by Nick Alcock the Tax Debt Coach and financial therapist (www.taxdebtcoach.co.nz) . Nick is a Chartered Accountant with over 17 years' experience working at a number of Chartered Accountancy firms across NZ and overseas helping business owners. As a result of his work Nick has acquired a lot of experience dealing with the Inland Revenue Department on behalf of his clients. Nick came across the subject of financial therapy one day quite by accident as a result of this he enrolled in a one year Masters Level Course in Financial Therapy via Kansas State University in America. This course helped Nick to better observe the habits and behaviours of the accounting clients he was working with and lead to the realisation that the new skills and knowledge he gained would greatly assist them with their businesses, especially where they had fallen behind meeting their tax obligations. This then lead Nick to helping a client who had a long history of tax arrears by filing a financial hardship application which in turn lead to the IRD writing off a large proportion of the tax arrears owed. This spurred Nick on to incorporating tax debt management as a niche service offering to his clients. Sally talks to me about what has changed in NZ law with respect to 90 day trial periods in the employment space. With a change of Government in 2023 the new coalition Government has opened up the use of trial periods to all employers no matter the size of the organisation and who many employees they employ. Aside from this change Sally and I deep dive the requirements, to be legal and what has stayed the same at law, the pitfalls and common mistakes, along with some other things you should be aware of regarding offers of employment and employment agreements. If you are looking to hire anyone in 2024 then you really should make sure you are up to speed with trial periods and how to use them successfully. Please note that the information presented in this podcast is not intended to be, and cannot replace, detailed legal advice. If you need help you should look to take specific advice from an employment lawyer that is relevant to your individual circumstance and business. The subject of teeth may seem slightly esoteric for a business podcast but trust me the story is well worth listening to and nowhere near as painful as visiting the dentist!. In this episode of the Real Business Solutions podcast I am joined by Chris White from Rise Wellness (www.risewellness.co.nz). This is a welcome return to the podcast for Chris having previously guested. Chris talks to me about the concept of stress in the workplace, the narratives we tell ourselves about the nature of stress (and our responses to it) and whether a little stress is, or can be, in fact performance enhancing. It was fascinating listening to Chris unpack the concepts behind stress, the physiological responses to it, the narratives we tell ourselves about stress and how that influences our reactions. This really resonated with me as it seems many people in business (whether that be leaders, managers or team members) complain of being 'stressed out' all the time. If you want to learn more about this topic and how a small mindset change can help you turn the stress narrative around then listen to this episode. Chris kindly also makes a special offer for the first 3 listeners who email him on chris@risewellness.co.nz and mention this podcast to get a free 90 minute stress workshop for you and your team. Finally, below you will find some useful links mentioned by Chris during the podcast to dive a little deeper on this topic: Is there a topic you want covered or a person you want to hear from? In this episode I am joined by Jon Foulkes, Senior Consultant from Redvespa Consultants a national business consultancy firm with an office here in Christchurch. Jon talks with me about the concept of Risk Management considerations for NZ SMEs when looking at and deploying new projects within their organisations. Jon talks with me about the fact the there is no avoiding every risk in a new project or its delivery, rather it is knowing what risks are deal breakers and which can be navigated or lived with depending on an organisations risk appetite. Jon talks with me about the 'Triangle of Tension' inherent in all projects along with the 7 key takeaways for an organisation considering or delivering a new project. This one is a fascinating listen. If you have ever wondered about "creeping bloat" in your projects then you need to listen to the sage advice imparted in this episode. Aside from consulting in the cyber security space, Max has a number of years' experience in IT across a diverse range of industries and professions. In this episode I am joined by Max John from White-Mirror Cyber Security Awareness and Consulting to talk about the topic of “end user cyber security” in your business. In this context an “end user” is anyone in your business who has access to your computer system including email and the internet, read pretty much most team members in any SME in New Zealand. Max talks with me about the importance of “end users” having a working understanding around the impact of their actions on an organisations data security. Max then explains the consulting and training that he can offer to businesses to help bolster team preparedness and vigilance for cyber threats. The reality is that cyber threats are always present to anyone in business and the consequences of suffering a cyber-attack could be devastating, both to reputation and business survival. You can have state of the art systems and software and think you are safe but all it can take is one click by a team member on the wrong thing and all your hard work can be seriously undone. If you are serious about cyber security in your business then you need to get serious about training your team about to be your first and best line of defence.
