In October 1997, a chilling crime unfolded in Canberra, Australia. Anu Singh, a law student at the Australian National University, drugged her boyfriend Joe Cinque's coffee with Rohypnol at a dinner party. Over the next 36 hours, she injected him with heroin multiple times. Despite his deteriorating condition, she delayed seeking help, and when paramedics arrived, it was too late. Following this case the law changed in the Australian capital territory ending the option of homicide trials being heard by a judge only. In 1997, Anu Singh, a 22-year-old law student, and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Joe Cinque, held a dinner party at their townhome in Canberra, Australia. However, this gathering was far from the usual. Shortly before their friends arrived, Anu delivered a disquieting message that suggested a horrifying crime was about to occur.Credits: "Crimes That Shook Australia" Anu Singh (TV Episode 2018) ABC News Australia Don't forget to rate and subscribe to the show, and follow me on Instagram @exhibitmaepodcast ☺
This week we revisit our conversation with iconic Australian writer Helen Garner. Helen has long been fascinated with our justice system, spending countless hours “hanging around the courts” as she describes it. Her loitering has resulted in a Walkley Award winning piece for Time Magazine, numerous stories for The Monthly and the best selling novels, ‘Joe Cinque's Consolation' and ‘This House of Grief'. Helen writes about many facets of our justice system; from complex legal cases and exceptional practitioners, to broken families and the selfless volunteers that support them. Hearing her perspective on our courts and the people that populate them is simply riveting. www.greenslist.com.au/podcast

This week Sean covers the tragic case of 4 year old Darcey Freeman - the little girl lost. Arthur Phillip Freeman does the unthinkable in a devastating act of spousal revenge, with the jury having to rule on his sanity... "was he mad or was he bad". Skye takes us through the dastardly plans of Anu Singh, boyfriend killer. Joe Cinque becomes the victim to Anu's plans of a joint suicide pact. Hosting a 'party' with her closest friends, Anu puts her plan into action and starts to poison her boyfriend.
When Joe Cinque met Anu Singh in 1995, he was immediately smitten with her, and why wouldn't he be? Anu wasn't only pretty, but she was also smart, going to the Australian University for her law degree. And although Anu was dating someone else at the time of their meeting, she would begin an affair with Joe that would turn into an actual relationship. Two years later however the relationship between Joe and Anu would begin to sour, and Anu would decide she needed to host a dinner party to say goodbye to her lover. But it wasn't a going away party, no, Anu had bigger plans for Joe- plans that included murder. Yes, Eavesdroppers - it's TRUE CRIME TIME! In this Drugs R Bad episode, we give a shout out to Ren, Jen and Zoë before looking at the case of Joe Cinque & Anu Singh alongside the story of drugs mules Michaella McCollum & Melissa Reid, also known as the Peru Two… In 1997 in Canberra, Australia, law student Anu Singh told friends she was going to kill herself and hosted two dinner parties where she was meant to end her own life. Instead, she laced her unsuspecting boyfriend Joe Cinque's coffee with Rohypnol before injecting him with a lethal dose of heroin. Why would Anu want to kill her boyfriend? And why would Anu want to kill herself? Why was she using heroin? And what did Joe do to deserve to die? Was Anu on a psychotic break? Why did she give paramedics the wrong address? Was it pre-mediated murder? And what sentence did Anu end up with? Listen in to find out! Michelle then goes on to discuss the Peru Two, a cautionary tale of how two party girls from Northern Ireland and Scotland in 2013 went from having a fun summer in Ibiza to becoming cartel drugs mules… Who are Michaela McCollum and Melissa Reid? Why are they called the Peru Two? Is it actually possible that people don't know where Lima is? Were they manipulated and groomed? Or were they just a bit stupid? Did Michaella actually go missing? And why did they lie to the media? Why are we talking about Quaker Oats? And how did their story end? Listen now to find out! It's all here on Eavesdroppin'! In 1997, 20-somethings Anu Singh and Joe Cinque were an up and coming young couple--Joe a successful civil engineer, Anu a law student at Australian National University, both smart and gorgeous. From the outside looking in, they seemed to be on top of the world. But there was a storm brewing behind the scenes. Anu was becoming more and more obsessed with a myriad of health problems that no doctors seemed to be able to find any evidence of. She was becoming more and more controlling and needy, demanding more than any partner could possibly provide. And the more she perceived Joe falling short of her expectations, the angrier she got. And when she got wind that he might be thinking of leaving her, a poisonous rage bubbled up inside her. This is the story of one of Australia's most bizarre murder cases, one that you'll be tempted to think we made up. But unfortunately, we didn't. Join us for a story of love, betrayal, revenge...and the starkest example of the "bystander effect" you may ever see. It's October 24, 1997, and 25-year-old Anu Singh, a promising young law student, invites friends over for a dinner party. She lives in a Canberra townhouse with her 26-year-old boyfriend Joe Cinque. The pair met two years prior at a night out in Newcastle. He was said to be immediately taken by Singh, and they quickly became inseparable. But something wasn't right about this dinner party. Friends who attended had heard of Singh's plans. She's called the night a ‘farewell', but some didn't take her remark seriously. Singh had issued a warning before they arrived. Tonight, in her words, “a crime was going to be committed”. Her friends arrived to the Canberra townhouse and enjoyed the company of both Singh and Cinque. They drank and ate, and eventually, left to go home. It's what happened next - when the couple were alone - that has become something of a modern horror story. TRIGGER WARNING: This case includes details of drug use and eating disorders. Giuseppe “Joe” Cinque was a 26-year-old man that seemed to have everything going for him. He was described as intelligent and well-liked. Joe had an incredible family, traveled the world, and had somewhat recently moved in to a flat with his girlfriend. Yet under the surface there was a storm brewing, because he had unknowingly let a devil into his life. Today, we go to Australia, because crimes down under are the most insane stories you'll hear about! Remember Keli Lane? Today you'll meet another special case. Anu Singh was a law student in 1997 when she killed her boyfriend Joe Cinque after organising farewell dinner parties. Meet the most salt of the earth parents in Cinques and the death behind the eyes of Singh on today's Gone bad. You get invited to a party. You are aware the person that invited you plans to kill themselves and they tell you they are in a suicide pact with their boyfriend and tonight is the night they will both end their lives. You say nothing, you don’t try to stop it. Two days later, you hear on the news that only one person died that night. And not by suicide, but as an overdose inflicted by that same girlfriend. This week we both find The One on Netflix but it may not be a match made in heaven. James takes a chance on Last Chance U: Basketball, and Dan goes indie with Joe Cinque's Consolation and The Strange Thing About the Johnsons. Reel News inevitably covers the Oscar nominations, but we also discuss the hype for Zack Snyder's Justice League and the so-called original content on Disney+ Star. In the main review, Apple TV tries to pop its Oscar cherry by joining forces with the Russo brothers, famed directors of You, Me, and Dupree. At 141 minutes, Cherry has not borne awards fruit but surely it will be worth watching.
In October 1997, Joe Cinque uprooted his entire life in Newcastle Australia to be with his girlfriend Anu Singh in Canberra. The move was a prelude to a twisted and elaborate plot to extinguish the life of a young man who had a bright and promising future ahead of him.Music Credits:The Minds Of Madness Theme Music – Duncan FosterFeel The Madness - The FunkoarsUsed with Permission - http://goldenerarecords.com.au/ge/funkoarsPlease check out this episodes sponsors and help support our podcast:Caliper CBD - Get 30% off Caliper’s all-natural, flavored Swiftstick Variety Packs when you use promo code MADNESS30 at http://trycaliper.com/madness30BetterHelp - Special offer for The Minds of Madness listeners: get 10% off your first month at betterhelp.com/madnessSpotlight Oral Care - Go to https://spotlightoralcare.com and get 20% off your first order with code MADNESSVarsity Tutors - To reserve your spot in a FREE class, go to https://www.varsitytutors.com/madnessBest Fiends - Download Best Fiends FREE on the Apple App Store or Google PlayMadison Reed: Get 10% off plus FREE SHIPPING on your first Color Kit go to madison-reed.com and enter PROMO CODE: MINDSResearch & Writing:Ashton MorrowScript Editing:Rose KeefeSpecial Thanks:Dr. Christina Forzani Psy.DIf you would like to support the show and get some extra perks including extra content, including early release/ad-free episodes, Go to - https://www.patreon.com/MadnessPodWebsite - https://mindsofmadnesspodcast.com/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/themindsofmadness/Twitter - @MadnessPod https://twitter.com/MadnessPodInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/themindsofmadness/Sources:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppggZ0fzMJ8http://www6.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/act/ACTSC/1999/32.htmlhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4504448/Anu-Singh-farewell-dinner-killing-boyfriend.htmlhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4505766/Anu-Singh-s-new-boyfriend-says-s-served-time.htmlhttps://www.nowtolove.com.au/news/local-news/anu-singh-speaks-out-about-killing-joe-cinque-37386https://murderpedia.org/female.S/s/singh-anu.htmhttps://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/oct/05/joe-cinques-consolation-toxic-relationships-and-the-mysteries-around-his-killinghttps://casefilepodcast.com/case-130-joe-cinque/https://www.singletonargus.com.au/story/4659847/twenty-years-after-their-sons-killing-maria-and-nino-speak-out/https://www.smh.com.au/opinion/her-new-careers-to-die-for-20050605-gdlghl.htmlhttps://www.drugfreeworld.org/drugfacts/prescription/rohypnol.htmlhttps://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/books/on-death-and-madness-20040809-gdjihw.htmlhttps://thewest.com.au/news/wa/complex-background-to-tragedy-ng-ya-120221http://joecinque.com.au/crimehttp://netk.net.au/Australia/Singh.aspJoe Cinque’s Consolation by Helen Garnerhttp://www6.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/viewdoc/au/cases/act/ACTSC/1999/32.html
Was passierte an diesem Abend? Jamila Rizvi and Astrid Edwards consider how justice - that greatest of concepts - appears in recent fiction and non-fiction. Chapter 1: What does justice have to do with books? Chapter 2: Jamila considers 'wokeness' and racial justice in her reading of Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid. Chapter 3: Astrid considers climate and intergenerational justice as discussed in Naomi Klein's On Fire: The Burning Case for a Green New Deal. Recommendations: Jamila recommends the legal classic from Helen Garner, Joe Cinque's Consolation: A True Story of Death, Grief and the Law. Astrid takes a different approach and lists the fiction and non-fiction recommendations that consider the climate crisis previously recommended from Seasons 1 and 2 of Anonymous Was A Woman. Auckland Writers Festival 2015 The quest for justice has seldom been more grippingly documented than in the book This House of Grief. The Australian novelist, essayist, screenwriter and journalist Helen Garner witnessed the trial of Robert Farquharson, charged with murdering his three children by drowning. This is not her first attempt to grapple with complex issues of justice and truth – Joe Cinque’s Consolation and The First Stonecanvas equally disturbing territory. The much-awarded, sometimes controversial, Garner talks to Mary Peters.
