Chasing Chrome Series - Part 5I have  guided and fished Great Lakes summer steelhead now for almost 36 years. Between my brief hotel career stints on the West Coast and Indiana, I have written and explored more about our Great Lakes Summer Skamania steelhead than perhaps no one else. Looking for answers and the history of Washington State's iconic Washougal River's Skamania strain fish's introduction into Lake Michigan by Indiana, brought me to one of the finest books ever written on those fish: Dry Line Steelhead by Bill McMillan. Join me and my guest John: Bill's  son, as we discuss John's epic steelhead conservation work and fighting for the plight of the most beautiful migratory salmonid fish that swims- Washington State's Washougal steelhead. John is President of the West Coast based Conservation Angler group. We discuss his dad and the fishing legacy of dry line steelheading today- don't miss this one!Do you enjoy the show? Please take a moment to like and leave a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify! Show Notes:  https://wetflyswing.com/702  Presented by: Stonefly Nets, Waters West Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors  In this episode, Brian Niska and Jeff Liskay talks about our upcoming Skeena Spey School and what makes the Skeena River a prime location for steelhead fishing. Expect to learn the art of spotting fish upstream, techniques to keep your fly in the "bucket" longer, and discover the best rods and lines suitable for both the West Coast and Great Lakes regions. This episode is packed with essential tips for anyone looking to enhance their steelhead fishing experience, including the top four criteria for finding fish on any steelhead water. Whether you're planning a trip to the majestic Skeena River or simply looking to improve your angling skills, this episode promises to equip you with the knowledge and inspiration you need. Episode Chapters with Brian Niska and Jeff Liskay on the Skeena Spey School 2:46 - Jeff expresses excitement about visiting the Skeena Spey Lodge, emphasizing the value of learning from experienced steelhead guides and the camaraderie among participants. Brian, the owner of the lodge, describes its unique appeal, highlighting the opportunity to catch pristine steelhead in shallow waters. 5:39 - Jeff shares that the biggest steelhead he has seen in the Skeena is close to 30 pounds. Brian explains that while the fishing season runs from mid-July to the end of October, late August to early September is particularly favorable because as water temperatures drop, fish begin to settle in the runs, increasing catch rates. 12:00 - We discuss the differences and similarities between fishing in the Great Lakes and the Skeena River, particularly for steelhead. Jeff emphasizes the importance of understanding how to fish the fly properly, noting that techniques learned in the Great Lakes can be valuable when applied to the Skeena. 14:29 - Jeff asks Brian about his approach to guiding anglers on the lower Skeena River. Brian explains that he doesn't typically have anglers fish one after the other in a step-and-cast manner. Instead, he assigns each angler their own section of the river, focusing on specific features such as diagonal bars or clusters of rocks, which can indicate where fish might choose to linger. 21:44 - We discuss the fluctuations in steelhead fish populations on the West Coast and the Great Lakes. Brian notes that natural variability in fish numbers has always existed, but modern technology and communication amplify awareness of these changes. 26:50 - Brian describes the Skeena, highlighting that within 15 minutes in any direction, one can experience solitude, yet the area is easily accessible due to its modern airport and proximity to town amenities. The lodge is conveniently located near the airport, equipped with Wi-Fi, and benefits from fresh supplies due to its closeness to town. 27:57 - Brian outlines the itinerary for those who are planning to fish the Skeena. He also emphasizes the importance of using a 12 to 13-foot rod with a Skagit or Scandi head, rather than larger rods, to fish effectively. He advises guests to maintain a mindset of optimism and confidence, believing that any suspicious movement in the water could be a fish. 30:59 - I share a memorable experience where I caught a bright coho, initially mistaking it for a steelhead. Brian explains that the catch varies year to year, with some years having more steelhead than coho, and vice versa. He notes that coho are aggressive fish that often hit harder than steelhead, describing them as tough fighters resembling Chinook salmon in build. 33:09 - Jeff provides valuable tips for fishing the Skeena River, emphasizing the importance of using one's eyes as the best tool. His first tip is to let the fly dangle in a foot of water for potential success. His second tip involves working through a run and paying attention to the movement of the fly. 34:57 - We talk about strategies for effectively fishing in challenging water conditions, particularly when dealing with obstructions like rocks. Jeff explains his approach by imagining himself as the fly to better understand fish behavior. He notes that fish often lay in front of or beside rocks, contrary to the common belief that they stay behind them. Jeff describes his technique of slowly moving his weight down to allow the fly materials to undulate and then positioning the rod toward the middle of the river to slow down the swing and keep the fly in place longer. 36:29 - Brian, although experienced, admits he hasn't fished every tributary but shares his insights on different sections of the river, emphasizing the importance of adapting fishing techniques based on the environment. He highlights the contrast between moving fish and those that linger in specific areas, particularly in the Bulkley and Morice rivers. 42:00 - We discuss the nuances of steelhead fishing, emphasizing the use of spoons and fly presentations. Brian advises focusing on changing presentation methods rather than the fly itself, and underscores the importance of patience when a fish strikes, recommending anglers allow the fish to take the fly without interference. 45:02 - We get into the click and pawl vs disc drag reel. Jeff advises against doing nothing, referencing the classic advice from George Cook, and mentions that while click and pawl reels are good for beginners, they can lead to challenges as the fight progresses. He also shares experiences of anglers struggling with these reels during intense fish fights. Brian adds that while some guides prefer click and pawl reels for personal use, they often provide clients with disc drag reels for better control. He personally favors disc drag reels, particularly the Islander TR3, for their strong drag and capacity, especially when dealing with exceptional fish. 48:45 - Jeff provides some insights into the importance of proper reel backing, especially when fishing for steelhead. He emphasizes checking for loops in the backing to prevent accidents and ensuring it's wound tightly. He also prefers using 40-50 pound gel spun backing, as it holds up well during long fights with fish, especially in challenging conditions like across boulders. 50:16 - Jeff provides valuable tips on the fishing gear used in the Great Lakes and how it transitions when fishing in the Skeena region. As a general strategy, Jeff advises having both a light and a heavy rod setup in both regions. This allows for flexibility, accommodating shallow and deep water conditions. 53:38 - Brian elaborates on the rods and lines he uses. He also describes various setups he might have in a boat. He highlights the flexibility of using a boat on the Skeena River, allowing for multiple gear setups, compared to the limitations when hiking along the bank. 1:00:10 - I raise the common challenge of locating fish in unfamiliar waters. Jeff suggests observing the river from an upstream perspective, as it reveals subtle features like flat spots and resting areas that are less obvious when looking downstream. This approach helps anglers identify potential fishing spots, whether on a small river or a larger one like the Skeena. Brian expands on Jeff's idea by emphasizing the importance of location and understanding the river's dynamics. He outlines four key criteria for finding fish: Structure: Look for features like salmon reds, woodydebris, or large rocks. Speed and Depth: Ideal fishing spots often have water around two and a half to three feet deep. Location on the River: Areas near rapids, tributaries, or bends can be promising. Lane of Travel: Anglers should focus on areas where fish are naturally traveling. 1:05:08 - Brian discusses how he manages expectations for guests at his lodge, stressing the challenges of steelhead fishing. He also emphasizes that fishing is more than just catching fish; it's about the knowledge and confidence gained. 1:08:49 - Jeff shares his enthusiasm for the Great Lakes Dude podcast, highlighting the wealth of information and knowledge he gains from engaging with experts like biologists and fishing guides. 1:12:19 - Brian talks about their collaboration with The Conservation Angler (TCA), led by John McMillan. John is both a scientist and a passionate steelhead angler, which uniquely positions him to contribute to conservation efforts. 1:15:06 - We give a shoutout to The Deep Wade podcast, hosted by John McMillan and Nick Chambers. Brian mentions on of his favorite episodes of the said podcast where they interviewed Bill Herzog, aka the Metal God, and one of the best steelhead anglers. 1:15:38 - For those who want to get a chance to win a spot in our Skeena Spey School fly fishing trip and gear giveaway, head on to wetflyswing.com/giveaway. In this episode , we look back at the high drama of winning a historic primary and unseating a political giant, only to lose in the general election. Then coming back two years later to finally win a seat in the United States House of Representatives. It was a rollercoaster of a ride with enormously consequential side stories that had far reaching importance. For the 1972 race for the 6th District Congressional Seat would open the door for the City of Washington D.C. to finally have some semblance of self governing. For years, John McMillan who chaired the committee that governed the District had prevented any form of self rule , save the schoolboard, from getting out of his committee.  African Americans had decided that the only way to achieve this goal was to unseat McMillan, and they would organize to try it twice, in 1970 when they lost and again in 1972. This time they had a strong candidate and they knew it. John Jenrette was young, talented, and had been a friend to the African American Community for years. We will listen as John Jenrette tells the story of how he got in the race, and why he decided to stay in the race even when he had only a 3% name identification in the district. He would get help from Muhammad Ali, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion. He would get help from his cousin the State Senator, James Stevens, and the race would be razor thin but John Jenrette would win. Then he would face State Representative Ed Young, a Republican, who would get help from John McMillan and many other disgruntled Democrats. He would also have another ace up his sleave, one of the greatest leaders in American History, Richard Nixon. It would prove to be a mountain to high for John Jenrette to climb and Ed Young would get elected to Congress. But two years later all of that would change.  NOTE: This show features my proudest researching find, the meeting between President Richard Nixon, 6th District Republican nominee Ed Young , and Nixon aid Harry Dent from South Carolina, from the Nixon taping system.  The Realists UncensoredHey future listeners, it's Checkers and MJ here and we are two American men that are...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify AgriFutures On AirThe official podcast channel for AgriFutures Australia. Fight Laugh Feast Conference - Ark Encounter This year, our Fight Laugh Feast Conference is at the Ark Encounter in Kentucky on The Politics of Six Day Creation. The politics of six day creation is the difference between a fixed standard of justice and a careening standard of justice, the difference between the corrosive relativism that creates mobs and anarchy and the freedom of objectivity, truth, and due process. The politics of six day creation establishes the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word for all of life: from what is a man or a woman, when does human life begin, and how is human society best organized? Come hear Ken Ham, Pastor Doug Wilson, Dr. Ben Merkle, Dr. Gordon Wilson, me and more, and of course a live CrossPolitic show! Mark your calendars for October 11th-14th, as we fight, laugh, and feast, with beer & psalms, our amazing lineup of speakers, our Rowdy Christian Merch, and a Sabbath Feast to wrap up the occasion. Maybe an infant baptism while we’re at it? https://www.zerohedge.com/political/ohios-apocalyptic-chemical-disaster-rages "Get The Hell Out Of There" - Ohio's Chemical Disaster Rages On While the US government is dispensing millions of dollars in resources to treat balloons as an existential crisis, a small town in Ohio finds itself engulfed in what actually looks like the apocalypse. Perhaps by design, all of the drama surrounding violations of US airspace by Chinese spy initiatives has done well to keep what is becoming one of the worst environmental disasters in recent memory from getting any headlines. The chaos began early last week when a train of more than 100 cars derailed in East Palestine, Ohio near the state’s border with Pennsylvania with roughly 5,000 residents. The accident launched fifty of those hundred freight cars from the tracks. Twenty of the freight cars on the train were carrying hazardous materials, ten of which were derailed. While the accident had no fatalities, of those ten cars, five contained pressurized vinyl chloride, a highly flammable carcinogenic gas. https://youtu.be/DHiXZUgQEwc - Play Video In order to address the volatile scenario around the crash site, the Ohio Emergency Management Agency executed its plan of venting the toxic gas with a controlled burn in order to evade an uncontrolled explosion which presented the risk of catastrophic damage. “Within the last two hours, a drastic temperature change has taken place in a rail car, and there is now the potential of a catastrophic tanker failure which could cause an explosion with the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile,” Gov. Mike DeWine warned in statement explaining the decision to take action to avert widespread devastation. However, that operation sent large plumes of smoke containing vinyl chloride, phosgene, hydrogen chloride, and other gases into the air as the flames from the controlled burn raged on for days. Phosgene in particular is a highly toxic gas that can cause vomiting and respiratory trouble. The toxicity of phosgene gas is so potent that it was previously used as a chemical weapon during the First World War. https://twitter.com/i/status/1625155991724605440 - Play Video The hazardous airborne chemicals prompted officials to issue mandatory evacuation and shelter-in-place orders within a one-mile radius of where the train derailed. Those orders forced nearly 2,000 residents of East Palestine out of their homes. Despite the public safety risk in proximity to the crash site, over 500 people within the parameters of the evacuation order refused to leave their homes. However, those orders were lifted on February 8th, allowing residents to return to the area adjacent to the disaster. Dead fish are being pulled from rivers outside East Palestine, Ohio. The trucks doing the work are labeled EnviroScience, an Ohio-based company that provides "time-sensitive solutions to environmental challenges." https://twitter.com/i/status/1625214717945057282 - Play Video Amanda Breshears found her chickens dead ten miles from East Palestine. https://twitter.com/i/status/1625214716443504641 - Play Video Holzer’s concerns were echoed by reports from other residents who described similar conditions near their own properties. One of those residents was Katlyn Schwarzwaelder, the operator of a local dog kennel in nearby Darlington, Pennsylvania. The catastrophe caused her to leave her home despite the fact that it lies more than 10 miles away from the site of the controlled burn. After fleeing to Boardman, Ohio, 15 miles away from the derailment, Schwarzwaelder stated she received multiple reports of dead chickens, fish, and other animals from friends and acquaintances. One affected resident told Schwarzwaelder that they let their 2-year old dog out to use the bathroom only for it never to return. When they embarked upon a search for their missing pet, they found it dead in their yard. Testimony from Holzer, Schwarzwaelder, and others paints a drastically different picture than the official narrative tailored by officials who assured residents that the situation was under control. The poor air quality presents short and long term health risks to the public considering the carcinogenic effects of the chemicals. Carcinogens like vinyl chloride can cause cancer in organs including the liver, according to Kevin Crist, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering who also serves as the Director of Ohio University’s Air Quality Center. The magnitude of this story has been seemingly scrubbed from the public view as national media outlets continue to run sensationalist headlines about issues that look innocuous in comparison. It is an instance of history being rewritten in real time, setting a precedent that would allow victims of other widespread devastation to be swept under the rug. However, the scenes of the horror engulfing this small town in America’s heartland may prove to make this disaster impossible to ignore, rightfully putting the spotlight on the shortcomings of state and federal agencies tasked with emergency response management whose continued lack of accountability enables them to fail the American public time and time again. Before I move on, I want to remind everyone, that the federal government isn’t who we should be relying on. All their authority was granted by our creator. It’s our Lord and savior Jesus Christ who our faith must lie upon. So we take our prayer requests about Ohio to our Lord. CrossPolitic Email List: Are you subscribed to our CrossPolitic email list? The congressionally mandated sale will amount to 26 million barrels of crude, according to people familiar with the matter. The sale is in accordance with a budget mandate enacted in 2015 for the current fiscal year, said a spokesperson for the Department of Energy. The Energy Department has sought to stop some of the sales required by 2015 legislation so that it can refill the emergency reserve, which currently has about 371 million barrels. After this latest release, the reserve will dip to about 345 million. Biden officials decided last year to tap 180 million barrels from the strategic reserve in an effort to ease supply issues after Russia invaded Ukraine, upending global oil flows and sending crude above $100 a barrel. Some Republicans have criticized the Biden administration for that drawdown, which was the biggest release ever and helped drain the SPR to its lowest level since 1983. Critics admonished the move as a political stunt intended to combat rising gasoline prices ahead of midterm elections. Biden officials have since spoken with energy companies about purchasing oil to refill the SPR when prices approach $70 a barrel. The latest release comes after Russia unveiled plans to curtail production by half-a-million barrels a day next month to retaliate against sanctions. Russia’s move, which was downplayed by the European Union, follows China’s rapid economic reopening with the scrapping of Covid-19 restrictions. The SPR release may give pause to the OPEC+ alliance, which earlier said that global oil markets remain balanced. So how did the market react? The US House last month passed legislation meant to curb the Energy secretary’s ability to use the reserve unless the government increases the amount of federal lands available for gas and oil drilling. Other congressionally required releases — about 140 million barrels slated for fiscal years 2024 through 2027 — were canceled at the Energy Department’s behest after lawmakers in December approved a provision in a giant spending bill. West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark for crude, fell 1% to trade near $79 a barrel after the announcement of more barrels. https://thepostmillennial.com/breaking-suspect-in-michigan-state-university-shooting-found-dead-from-self-inflicted-gunshot-at-least-3-people-killed?utm_campaign=64487 Suspect in Michigan State University shooting found dead from self-inflicted gunshot, at least 3 people killed The suspect in the Michigan State University shooting was found dead off campus late Monday night from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. MSU Police Interim Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said, “There is no longer a threat on campus and the shelter-in-place has been lifted.” Police had earlier described the suspect as a "black male, shorter in stature, red shoes, jean jacket, wearing a baseball cap that is navy with a lighter brim." Rozman said the deceased individual matched the description of the suspect but did not reveal the suspect's identity. During a press conference late Monday night, Rozman said 3 people had been killed and 5 have been hospitalized. The victims, some in critical condition, were transported to Sparrow Hospital. Police responded to reports of an active shooting at Michigan State University in East Lansing Monday night and students were ordered to shelter in place. The incident took place at 8:18 pm inside Berkey Hall the location of MSU's Department of Sociology on the northern boundary of the campus. The shelter-in-place order went out at 8:31 pm telling students to stay inside and barricade themselves. "Run, Hide, Fight. Run means evacuate away from danger if you can do so safely, Hide means to secure-in-place, and Fight means protect yourself if no other option," MSU said in the alert. According to authorities, the suspect walked to the MSU Union, approximately 19 minutes away from the initial shooting site and opened fire. Hundreds of officers from the FBI, ATF, Michigan State Police, and other agencies are still assisting on campus. All campus activities have been canceled for 48 hours and authorities have asked people not to come to the campus on Tuesday. Now that was some heavy subject matter, so let’s go ahead and end with this… this is the fight laugh feast network afterall! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/feb/14/man-facing-jail-over-theft-of-almost-200000-cadbury-creme-eggs Man facing jail over theft of almost 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs A chocolate thief is facing jail after admitting he stole almost 200,000 Cadbury Creme Eggs in a heist worth more than £31,000. Joby Pool, 32, dubbed “the Easter bunny” by police, used a stolen lorry cab to make off with chocolate after breaking into a Telford industrial unit with a metal grinder on Saturday. He is expected to be jailed for about two years next month, after pleading guilty to theft and criminal damage. Opening the facts of the case on Tuesday, prosecutor Owen Beale told Kidderminster magistrates court: “I don’t know if you have seen the news recently – there was a load that was stolen and on the trailer was Cadbury’s products, a large number of Creme Eggs.” He said Pool, a self-employed ground worker, used a tractor unit that had been stolen in the Yorkshire area in October to tow away the trailer full of chocolate, which was then driven away, eventually reaching the northbound M42. Pool was spotted by police and “gave up at junction 11 and walked towards the police with his hands up. He was arrested and the load was recovered”. “This clearly wasn’t spur-of-the-moment offending, if I can put it like that, because he had taken with him a tractor unit and he had to know that the load was there in the first place,” said Beale. Magistrates were told Pool, from West Yorkshire, was previously convicted of theft, handling stolen goods and driving while disqualified in 2019. Beale said: “This is clearly an organised criminal matter. You don’t just happen to learn about a trailer with that kind of value being available.” Defence solicitor John McMillan, told the court that Pool understood a substantial sentence was likely. In a series of tweets on Monday, West Mercia police described the incident as an “eggs-travagent theft” of a “chocolate collection box”. “Shortly after the theft a vehicle, presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny, was stopped northbound on the M42 and a man was arrested on suspicion of theft,” they said. Pool will be sentenced at Shrewsbury crown court on 14 March.

This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily Newsbrief for Wednesday, February 15th, 2023. Originally Released Jul 09, 2021 This week I am delighted to have biologist John McMillan back as my guest [46:00]. John gives us a detailed view on the affect of water temperature on a trout's metabolism, particularly at the upper end of their safe range. In this summer of low flows and high water temperatures nearly everywhere in North America, it's a critical topic. And as usual, John puts his critical eye on how we, as anglers, can mitigate these effects by changing our fishing behavior. John is never without optimism, and I think you'll enjoy his discussion and learn more about trout biology and how we can be more responsible anglers. In the Fly Box this week, we have some great questions and tips from listeners: Why did my guide tell me to use heavier tippets? Why did she suggest this would put less stress on the fish? A suggestion from a listener on getting an old bamboo rod and refurbishing it to bring one back to life. What is the difference between hen and partridge? How do I know where to find trout streams? What size should I tie my ants in? A new way of tying a clinch knot with heaver hooks is suggested by a listener Why, when fishing with a dry dropper, do I only catch browns on the nymph and only cutthroats on the dry? What do you suggest for catching pressured largemouths in summer? A belated Father's Day message Can I use the Euro nymphing method from a drift boat or float tube? Why am I having trouble mending at 30 feet with a dry dropper? When tying a Chubby Chernobyl, how do you get the legs to separate? When you see a large mammal like a beaver or otter in the river, is it time to move on? Why do I catch myself with my fly when casting? Is it OK to dry my waders and boots in the sun? How should I handle my gear for air travel? Why do I keep losing fish when using bead head flies? Does using a frog pattern change the flex of my rod? Why do Scandinavians hold their rods so high when playing a fish?

Find out why you should consider surf perch fishing for your easy days on the water.  We touch a little bit on steelhead - their bread and butter - how they're handling the changes in steelhead numbers which are slowing down lately.   And we also talk about life.. wisdom that leads to more fishing. Surf Perch Show Notes with Ed and Kyle 04:50 - Ed was born and raised in Mexico. He used to fish a lot before but stopped because he felt bad wounding some fish he caught - he later discovered that there are hooks called, barbless, that were safer for the fish. Then he got back to fishing. 06:30 - They describe what Olympic Peninsula is like - mountains and beaches.. surfing, snowboarding, and fishing 08:30 - Dave Steinbaugh founded Waters West - Ed tells us how the fly shop got started 11:30 - Dave was retiring and wanted to sell the shop - Ed had some money saved up after working a few jobs as a software engineer. Ed was a regular customer at Waters West because they had good steelhead fly tying materials. Then he bought the shop from Dave. 13:00 - They catch steelhead during the winter. Salmon, trout, and surfperch in spring. 14:30 - Surfperch can be found on sandy beaches in the steepest part 18:00 - They typically use 5 wt rod with intermediate line, orange clouser minnow for flies or bonefish flies with led eyes. Ed and Kyle break down the fishing tactics. 21:45 - The best time to fish surf perch is 1 or 2 hours after the high tide as the tide is moving out 22:30 - Since last year, Ed started using a steel leader because one day he was catching surfperch and he hooked on a lingcod but it got away - it sliced through his leader. Lingcod feed on surfperch in Spring. 29:06 - For leaders, you could use a straight piece of Maxima - 7 feet to 3x is pretty standard, 10 or 20 pound 29:45 - They have a YouTube video tying a surf perch fly - scroll down to watch the video. Surf perch can take a big fly, shrimp or crab pattern - 2 to 8 33:20 - You can catch 10 to 20 surf perch a day in just a couple of hours. They're good eating fish too. 38:04 - For reels, they usually use a Lamson Guru. We had Nick Torres from Waterworks Lamson at WFS 213 and WFS 304 39:06 - Surf perches give live birth - babies come right out of their mother swimming. They don't lay eggs like salmon or steelhead. They spawn in eelgrass because surf perch moms eat them. 41:25 - Read more about the redtail surf perch life cycle here 41:30 - You can catch some starry flounder near the eelgrass flats too 43:50 - If they could ask Bob Clouser a question, they would want to ask: What do most people do wrong when tying a clouser? 45:40 - Ahrex hooks work awesome on surf perches too - we had Morten Valeur from Ahrex Hooks at WFS 150 49:24 - In most of the rivers in the Olympic Peninsula, there's not a lot of bug life for the fish to feed on, that's why rainbows go out in the ocean 50:25 - Sea-run cutthroat can be found in a more rocky structure beach 56:30 - Ed tells us how he stays positive when dealing with the changes in steelhead numbers 58:30 - John McMillan was on the podcast at WFS 117 where we also covered steelhead in Olympic Peninsula 1:09:30 - Waters West has a line, rod, and reel combo setup specifically for surf perch fishing Surf Perch Conclusion with Ed Fuhrken and Kyle McCurdy So there you go..  Surf perch are not the typical specie that an angler would target but as you heard from Ed and Kyle, they're pretty chill to catch and actually a good eating fish. Who wouldn't want a 10 to 20 average catch in just a couple of hours? I bet every surf perch day is a great day. You're on a sandy beach.. nice weather.. nice beer.. you hear the ocean waves.. you've got fish in the cooler to take home. Would you still complain?  Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/337

How does water temp affect trout behavior? With John McMillan

This week I am delighted to have biologist John McMillan back as my guest.

The RAGE Compact line is a very good line for the Deschutes in the Wind.  I use it on my 6 weight 12' 6" Echo Swing Two Handed Rod. Tom Larimer was on the podcast in episode 11 and had a funny story about the RAGE line. The Fly Shop in Redding puts together all of the trips for Kamchatka Utkholk River and Zhupanova River are two of the main streams that Mauriusz works in out of Russia. Dec Hogan's Modern Spey Casting and the Passion for Steelhead are two of the great resources for steelhead. The Silvenator is the goto winter steelhead fly and the Steelhead Coachman is the goto summer steelhead pattern. You can find Mariusz at the Wild Salmon Center. This week I have another podcast with John McMillan, as I have to confess I love talking to John about fishy stuff.  His knowledge and enthusiasm and passion are infectious and I think his interviews are always enlightening.  This week we talk about The Colors of Trout—can we tell anything from the coloration of trout about their life history?  Is there a good way to tell a hatchery form a wild fish?  What does it mean when trout carry parr marks into adulthood?  How quickly can trout change their coloration?  And are the spot patterns on trout like fingerprints?  Warning—we come up with more questions than answers and you may as well.   In the Fly Box this week, we have these questions and tips: A way to get a dropper off a surgeon’s knot to stand at 90 degrees to the tippet A suggestion for an all-around rod for bass and Great Lakes steelhead How to carry a sinking line without lugging around a second rod Can I add 4X tippet to a 5X leader? What is the best way to dispose of tippet clippings? What is the difference between Euro, Tightline, Direct Contact, Spanish, Czech, and French Nymphing? Does it make sense to try a mouse fly during the winter? Do trout live in different places in freestone rivers than in tailwaters? Do mayflies live in warm waters? What is the best rod for an 8-year-old kid? What is the best way to thin UV Cure epoxy? If you see nymphs on the bottom, can you predict what adult insect to imitate?
