Having a ton of maintenance plan clients is awesome - especially for the recurring revenue. But with ongoing support clients come with ongoing support requests.Managing this with a dozen or so clients is pretty easy. And as we all know – not all clients ping you every month with requests. But once you get to 30, 40, 50, 100 + maintenance plan clients, you've got to have a system for support. That's why I'm pumped to share this chat I had with Phil Storey, founder and CEO of Glow. This one is interesting because, not only did Phil have some solid advice for handling support requests but it was also a chance for me to learn more about his platform.I've been using ManageWP since 2016 and while it's still my preferred tool for managing multiple WordPress sites, you can't link in non-WordPress sites and there's no native support ticketing system. That's one of the big value-props of Glow as you can add non-WP sites and their big differentiator in the market is the native support ticketing system. We dig into all of that and more!Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/378

The social media video and reel game is a hard one to play (and win) when it comes to landing clients. Every platform is beyond saturated, the competition is only growing and unless you're getting quality leads fairly quick, it can be difficult to stick with. But as Roberto Blake has recently been quoted in saying:”While there may be saturation in a market, there's not a saturation of “quality.”This could not be more timely for you if you're wanting to market your web design business with videos and reels. And there may be no better example of this than my guest in this chat, Blaze Smith Blaze, who at a very young age, started getting clients immediately through Instagram and TikTok reels. Many of them with big brand CEO's, founders and marketing directors. We get into his process from planning, to recording, to the proven strategies and blueprints he follows for all his videos which have not only brought in quality leads, but have also built up his social media following to tens of thousands in a matter of months. If you're wondering how to stand out and get clients with reels, here ya go.Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/374

An unexpected topic of conversation I've consistently had over the last couple years when coaching members of my community Web Designer Pro privately is around managing ADHD and running a web design business. When thinking about ADHD, I'm probably not alone in immediately jumping to the visual of the wild 7 year old kid who can't sit down in class. But since the conversation around this has become more prevalent for me both personally in my coaching DM's and in the web design community at large via other forums or groups I check into, I wanted to dig into what this looks like practically for adults running a web design business.Since this is a sensitive topic, I wanted to chat with someone who I could level with and learn from versus being educated from an “ADHD Coach” per say. That's why I'm dang pumped about sharing my recent convo with my old friend (literally, we were doubles tennis partners in High School) Rob Chaplin. Rob and I reconnected a couple years back when he was considering jumping into a creative field like web design. Since then, he's been through all my courses, built up his freelance business and became a member of my community Web Designer pro.But in 2024, he let me know that he hit a wall…feeling disorganized, down, scattered and disoriented about how to move forward in business and in life. Now, many of these feelings are natural when you start a business, do something new or take on the common stresses of building something – but for Rob, it was more. After some self-research, he dipped his toe into pursuing ADHD treatment, most of which are behavioral and habitual and I have to say, I've seen a noticeable difference with his output and his overall energy and state. For all those reasons and more, I wanted to have an open chat about HIS experience and journey managing ADHD as a web designer and because he's so new in the journey and he's really passionate about sharing what's working for him.We dig into:The red flags that led him to research ADHDHow he started small and began making better progress in becoming more focused and productiveWhat tips, tricks and strategies he uses to help his ADHD (daily) nowHow creative fields like web design are actually ideal for folks on any spectrum of the ADHD scaleHow ADHD can actually be used in a very positive way with boundaries and constraintsAgain, this is purely an explorative chat for me to learn more about this world without judgement or preconceived notions.Disclaimer: Rob shares HIS journey, methods, strategies and medications that work for him but this is not medical advice or recommendation. Many web designers don't want to scale. I get it - because I had that mindset too. I never wanted to be an agency with overhead, payroll, extra stress from managing people, etc.But the good news is, especially nowadays, you can scale a web design business your way. In a low-stress, low-pressure way that works for you no matter where your business is in revenue and profitability.Sandy Burns, a founding member of my community Web Designer Pro is a perfect example of this. She was on the podcast recently sharing her story of passing 10 years in business and how she (reluctantly) HAD to scale because she had become so overwhelmed with projects. We got to hear from her perspective what it was like to scale and how the timing couldn't have been more crucial because shortly after she began to scale and reduce her workload, she was diagnosed with cancer and immediately began a journey of chemo and cancer treatment. That's one angle of Sandy's story but another one is the other side of her scaling journey. Who did she hire? What was it like for them as she began to send more work their way and when Sandy was diagnosed, what was it like taking over projects and speaking directly to her clients?Well for that, I'm excited to introduce you to Alexis. At some point, most web designers dream of moving from lengthy, time-intensive, custom web design projects to a more “productized” or “templatized” web design service. Especially if you're empowering your clients with any sort of marketing or growth help.A shining example of how to do this is Web Designer Pro member Whitney Bateson who, after years of developing custom websites, refined her process into a web design + education solution for her wellness clients in her signature program “The Wellness Pro Website System”In this convo, we get into:What was the “breaking point” for her to move from custom buildsHow her maintenance plan recurring revenue growth rate was factored into this pivotWhat she did to refine her systems and processes to prepare to productizeHow she's balancing ongoing support for clientsWhy she feels it's GOOD to start custom before moving to productizedWhether you're interested in productizing your web design services as a course, service, product, program, etc…Whitney is a shining example of how to do it right so I really hope this convo helps you get more time and sanity back when you're ready to productize your results!Head to the show notes to get all links and resources we mentioned along with a full transcription of this episode at joshhall.co/356 Get my entire suite of courses in the Courses Tier = $49/moGet courses + all community features in the Community Tier = $99/moGet everything + direct coaching with me in the Coaching Tier = $199/moJoin today (in the tier that works for you) at: webdesignerpro.com*** upgrade & downgrade available ***

Let's get real and share exactly how it is…WordPress is not the tool of choice for most web designers getting into the game today. It may be where most end up, because WordPress is the most popular, customizable, and only open-source platform online but as a starting point, it's not where most new web designers are starting.Drag and drop platforms like Framer, SquareSpace, and ShowIt and even more robust platforms like WixStudio, WebFlow, and Duda seem to be where young whipper-snapper web designers jump to first. So it begs the question…is WordPress just for old people nowadays? To dive into this topic and to explore both the challenges and opportunities ahead for WordPress, I'm pleased to bring on a young web designer and thought leader Mark Szymanski who, despite being a young whipper snapper web designer, decided to choose WordPress over all the options above. We explore:What made Mark decide on WordPress over more user-friendly buildersThe challenges in competition WordPress has moving forwardHow WordPress can market better to young web designersHow important it is to have a lean tool stack as an agency ownerThe key ingredient that continues to keep WordPress leading as the most popular platformNote: we recorded this conversation before the recent WordPress vs WPEngine drama happened so that is not discussed in this one.If you have anything to add on this topic - feel free to drop us a comment on the show notes at joshhall.co/349The Web Design Business Podcast is available on:Apple - https://apple.co/36wnnc3Spotify - https://spoti.fi/36ttMEor wherever you get your podcastsView all Web Design Business Podcasts with show notes and full transcriptions at: https://joshhall.co/podcastWe just added new listening pathways on the Podcast Playlists page!

It's been a little while since we've talked about accessibility on the podcast and one area we haven't covered at all to this point is specifically how to make accessible eCommerce websites.Everything is more complex with eCommerce sites and accessibility, while complex even at the basic level, gets even trickier. So, to help understand all of this, accessibility expert Bet Hannon (CEO of accessicart.com) is on the show as we dive into:The very basics of accessibilityEasy accessibility wins you can achieve on your sitesThe common accessibility traps for eCommerce sitesThe #1 accessibility culprit for restaurant websitesOffering accessibility from the start of your projectsAnd more. It's easy to feel overwhelmed with accessibility - perhaps because it CAN be extremely robust but every time I speak with an expert in it, I'm reminded that the most important thing is to have the basics covered. So if you do everything we talk about in the first 10-15 minutes here, that's a great start. And while we do get into some of the accessibility penalties that have been circulating, I don't want you to feel intimidated or scaled by web design as a whole. Accessibility is a lot like privacy and security in terms of the “rare events (aka lawsuits and penalties)” making the headlines. The goal is simple, make websites as accessible to everyone as possible. Build sites with that in mind and you'll be far ahead of most other web designers and you'll make the web a better, more user-friendly place for all.Get all links and resources mentioned along with a full transcription at:https://joshhall.co/345View all Web Design Business Podcasts with show notes and full transcriptions at: https://joshhall.co/podcastPodcast Playlists are now live!!

In person networking and referral groups remain to this day the best way to start getting clients, get more clients by expanding your network and get better clients by way of referrals. There are a lot of different ways to get clients in person and virtually, and I've done many but if I were starting as a web designer today, my FIRST priority would be to join a networking group. More specifically, I would invest in a referral group like BNI.Referral groups differ from networking groups in that they are there to help members give and get referrals. It's what led to over 50% of my web business revenue and it's the strategy that is working for many members of my community Web Designer Pro.One of my community members who this strategy has worked so well for is Mike Albuquerque who, last year, tracked that he brought in $208,000 worth of web design revenue (website builds, hosting and maintenance plans and growth services) that all stemmed from his networking BNI referral group. In this podcast chat, Mike graciously opened up on exactly how he hit this huge milestone. We cover:How Mike got into networking despite behind a massive introvertHow long it took for him to start seeing results and an ROIWhat he would do differently and the same if he started networking todayThe big difference between networking events and referral groupsHow becoming a connector led to referrals and huge boost in trust with leadsAnd a whole lot more.Again, there are tons of ways to get web design clients but if you're in an area where you can join a BNI group or any similar referral networking group, I recommend it. It's the quickest ROI, it's what worked for me and tons of members in my community including Mike who is already on track to well exceed his 2023 revenue based off of referrals. If it worked for me and Mike, it can work for you! Ah privacy policies…your favorite aspect of web design, right?Yeah me neither but day by day, it's an aspect of websites that becomes more and more important with new privacy laws being passed in the states along with other countries, even outside the EU with regards to GDPR compliance. So, to help us make sense of where things are at with website privacy policies, I'm excited to bring back on to the podcast, my friend and privacy policy expert Hans Skillrud of Termageddon. In this chat, we cover:How to better understand what we need to do as web designers for privacyHow we can help clients by selling privacy policy plans to themThe difference between privacy on contact form submissions versus cookie contents and “behind the scenes” privacy and much moreI highly recommend using Termaggedon for your auto-updating privacy policies. This is probably ignorance on my part but my eyebrow always went crooked when I heard digital agencies, hosting companies, saas products, or any online entrepreneur talking about how they're a “green” company. It's not like we're a manufacturing company or chemical plant with waste and pollutants. We work on a computer at home…so how can we “go green?” Use less paper? Recycle old equipment? What else can we do?Well, it turns out there are a lot of ways to contribute to sustainability and to do our part in protecting our environment even while working from home or in a coworking space as a web designer. That's why I'm excited to bring back onto the podcast Adela Mei, a trusted source for this topic because, while she's a web designer and strategist, she came from a previous career in environmental work and saw much of what most of us don't see first hand while working in the amazon. From what we as web designers can do day to day to help contribute to sustainability, to the surprising toll data storage takes on the environment globally and more, I found this conversation very educational and eye opening. And side note, if you heard the recent podcast on getting grant funding, one aspect to help your cause is to have green initiatives in your business (and on your website). So you could take what you learn in this convo and apply it to your green page if you're looking for just one additional aspect to help you get grant funding in your business. We cover:Going Green as a Web DesignerImpacts of Green Web DesignPersonal and Business Environmental ResponsibilityGreen Practices for Web DesignersGoing Green in Technology and BusinessSustainability and Green Business TipsIf you have any other tips for “going green” as a web designer, feel free to drop us a comment at joshhall.co/333.View all Web Design Business Podcasts with show notes and full transcriptions at: https://joshhall.co/podcastSupport the Show.Join Web Designer Pro™ before we hit the 250 member cap!https://joshhall.co/pro

One of the benefits of being a web designer is your option to build recurring revenue. As a WordPress web designer, I learned that one of the best ways to do this was to offer a hosting and maintenance plan. Or “care plan” as it's more commonly referred to these days. For years, it was my assumption that if you use self-hosted platforms like SquareSpace, WixStudio, Webflow, Showit, etc then you can't offer care plans because there's no plugins to update or advanced security to monitor. But I was wrong...you CAN offer care plans (even if you're NOT using WordPress!!)A great example of this is Eleanor Mayrhofer, a SquareSpace web designer and member of my community Web Designer Pro™.On a recent weekly coaching call, Eleanor and I chatted together about how she could build up more recurring income as a SquareSpace designer and we came up with offering an “SOS” plan.SOS stands for "Strategy, Optimization & Support"Eleanor launched her SOS plan and literally overnight generated a few hundred dollars per month of recurring revenue with this plan and her clients are loving it! She's on the podcast this week pulling back the curtain on her plan!We cover:What she includes in her SOS planHow she prices itHow she sold it to existing clients and got several signupsHow her SOS plans work alongside her growth/marketing plansHow she's protecting her time with this new service by going slow and steady with promoting itFor all the links mentioned and to see Eleanor's SOS plan for reference, head over to joshhall.co/331, and hey, drop us a comment if this episode helps you out!Special Featured Link:Check out Eleanor's SOS plan at: https://www.eleanormayrhofer.com/support-optimization-strategyLinks Mentioned:My website maintenance plan course Get all links and resources mentioned along with a full transcription at:https://joshhall.co/331The Web Design Business Podcast is available on:Apple - https://apple.co/36wnnc3Spotify - https://spoti.fi/36ttMEor wherever you get your podcastsView all Web Design Business Podcasts with show notes and full transcriptions at: https://joshhall.co/podcastGet instant access to my brand new (free) 50 minute video masterclass on how to scale your web design business, your way.

Description:I've met a lot of 6 and 7-figure agency owners over the years and there's always often a recurring theme…many are completely burned out, disgruntled OR they've sold or left the agency altogether. It's probably the main reason I personally prefer the “small shop or studio” route as a solopreneur web designer with a lean and mean contractor team but at the same time, there's value in truly creating a “business” in the form of an agency. But…are ALL agency owners burned out? No - despite meeting many owners who fit that profile, there are the exceptions. One is Greg Merriless of Studio1Design.com who's been running his 7-figure agency for over a decade and most impressively is one of the few who is NOT burned out! Maybe it's his chill, Aussie presence or maybe it's how intentional he was about building an agency that is profitable, sustainable and geared around the work he WANTS to do in house. We cover a lot in this one including:How his 7-figure agency began getting high-profile clientsHow to focus on your core services (and hire out the rest)How to build partnerships with agencies who you can collaborate withHow to find and hire a teamStaying profitable (even as a team of 20+ employees)And more.Honestly, how amazing is it that through this podcast, you and I can learn from multi-7 figure agency owners who literally share exactly how they've built and scaled their business?!?!? It's just too cool. I recently caught up with my friend Shannon Mattern, fellow web design business coach who has a group coaching program called The Web Designer Academy. We often talk off-the-record but decided to record our most recent catch up, an honest conversation about what's working for web designers in 2024.Shannon and I are both in a unique position to be able to oversee many web designers, some early on in the journey making less than six figures and some who are established web biz owners running six and multi-six figure agencies. So we both have a good pulse on what's working for web designers today. And that's why I'm extra excited to let you in on our recent catch up.Some of the topics explored are:What tends to hold web designers back from 100kWhat designers who are making 250k-500k+ are doingTips for getting past pricing mind trashThoughts on niching by gender (or whether you should niche by personality type)Web designer work life balance tips and a whole lot morePersonally, I love having conversations with friends in the industry with no specific topic, agenda and I hope you do as well!
