Our dream, as Christian parents, is surely that our kids will find God in the everyday - knowing they can chat to him about anything, ask him questions, and invite him to be a part of their decision-making. But how does this happen, what about if it's not happening, and where does play fit into all this? To help us think through discipling our kids in the everyday is Joy Wendling. Joy is a family pastor, writer, speaker, podcaster, certified parent coach and founder of Created to Play. She has over 20 years of experience in children, youth and family ministry, as well as a Master's in Youth, Family and Culture from Fuller Theological Seminary. Joy is based in the Pacific Northwest of America with her husband and five daughters, and loves nothing more than gazing at the mountains from her island home with an ice-cold Diet Coke and a good book. When you hear the word play do you secretly think (as I once did), it sounds lovely, but not for me? Does play sounds too time consuming and so not simple? I was there Mama. But my conversation with Joy Wendling from Created to Play changed all of that. I think I was making play to be this big thing and it's really not. In fact, I discovered that I have been playing without really knowing it. In this episode we unpack what play is, how we can use it to point our kids to Jesus, and a whole lot more. So if you're ready to be converted, this episode is the one for you! We often think of play as a child's thing. Parents who don't particularly enjoy building with legos, playing with dolls, or putting on costumes can find the idea of play to be tedious. Joy Wendling, host of the podcast Playfully Faithful Parenting, challenges that definition of play. Listen in as she discusses what play really is, the different ways we are wired to play, and how we can make our house a more playful place. Find show notes here. How do you faithfully pursue a dream despite your limitations? Mother of five little girls, Joy Wendling relishes the dream God has given her to help other moms enjoy their motherhood and incorporate playful moments with conversations about faith. But there are days when her own sin and brokenness make her feel disqualified from pursuing this dream. That's when she reminds herself to trust that God's faithfulness is bigger than her brokenness. Maybe you have felt unqualified and inadequate to convey the message God has given you to share with others. Maybe the enemy has told you that you're too broken, imperfect, or messed up to carry any goodness, hope, or encouragement to others. Let this conversation with Joy encourage you through practical steps to integrate playfulness into your life and allow the Lord to meet you with His grace, mercy and faithfulness to do the work in and through you, despite you. In this episode you'll also hear Joy and I discuss: A definition of play, how Jesus played, and how that informs playfulness for us How we are meant to enjoy the abundant life Nurturing an awareness of God's presence with you in your dream Joy is a mama of five fun and fabulous girls, a podcaster, a parent coach, and a speaker with 20+ years of ministry experience and a Master's in Youth, Family, and Culture from Fuller Theological Seminary. One of my core beliefs as a children's ministries director, one that I continue to hold today, is that children already experience and know God in a deep and personal way. Kids are not junior varsity Christians. They are able to communicate with God, to hear from Him, and to engage with Him in so many incredible ways. But because we are adults, we don't always see it. We don't always believe it. What looks like child's play to us can really be a form of prayer. What looks like them using their imagination can really be them engaging with God in His Word. What looks like sitting quietly with a coloring book can actually be a form of silence and solitude. And that's why I love this interview with Joy Wendling. Joy is a spiritual parenting coach, and she helps mamas use play with their children to engage with God and build their faith. “But what if I don't like to play?” you ask. “What if I'm not very good at it? What do I do if I'm not very creative?” Joy offers us some very practical steps to take when it comes to using play to talk with our kids about their faith. And let me assure you, you can do this. Kari MEET JOY WENDLING: Joy Wendling is a Children's and Family Minister turned Stay-at-Home Mom to her 5 little girls. Growing up in the South, Jesus has always been a part of her life, but it wasn't until college that she came to know him as a friend and to realize that he desires a daily relationship with her. This experience started Joy's journey and passion for equipping families to take responsibility of their children's discipleship. For a time, her Family Ministry also overlapped with Christian Early Childhood Education, which is where Joy fell in love with play and its benefits for learning and well-being. Joy is now a play advocate and believes play is the best way to engage children in discipleship. Currently, Joy is encouraging mamas to point their children to Christ with play at her blog CreatedtoPlay.com and is the host of the podcast Playfully Faithful Parenting.
