In Episode 99 of the Award Travel 101 podcast, Mike Zaccheo and Justin Walter dive into exciting travel updates and tips. Highlights include member Paul's recommendation to explore European Christmas markets, featuring Vienna's charm. News about Chase Freedom's Q1 2025 5x categories, Virgin Red's link to Virgin Flying Club for bonus points, and status match opportunities for Delta and Hilton elites was discussed. Southwest also announced the sale of A-List status, offering perks like priority boarding and same-day flight changes. In the main feature, Justin recounts his recent 6-night family trip to Europe, managing the logistics of traveling with seven people, including his sister-in-law's first international journey. He secured United Polaris business class tickets, enjoyed the Polaris lounge at ORD, and stayed at the Hyatt Regency Churchill in London with upgraded suites and stellar service. The family explored iconic attractions earning bonus points through Rakuten for ticket purchases. They wrapped up the trip with a positioning flight to Amsterdam. While Justin and his travel companions had a smooth return flight to the U.S., his parents faced a different experience. Their itinerary was hit by a lengthy delay, resulting in an unplanned overnight stay in Chicago. This situation served as a reminder to stay calm and make use of available resources when irregular operations (IROPS) occur. On a positive note, they successfully filed a UK261 claim to compensate for the inconvenience. Justin concludes with practical family travel tips—plan your transportation, bring portable strollers, and use Uber for ease. Plus, Justin's tip of the week encourages listeners to jump on outstanding offers when you see them, like we did with the NLL Amex Business Gold recently.Links to Topics DiscussedChase Freedom Q1 2025 CategoriesLink Virgin red to Virgin Flying Club for 4000 pointsAA Announced 2025 Loyalty program changesDelta Status for Hilton Diamond membersWhere to Find Us The Free 110k+ member Award Travel 101 Community. This week we feature another installment of “Meet the Mods” Angie talks with Justin Walter who shared his journey into the points and miles hobby, which started in 2021 after being inspired by fellow enthusiast Justin Vacula. His first major redemption, staying at the Hyatt Ziva Cancun, got him hooked, and he now prefers traveling in business class, especially for international trips. One of his favorite redemptions was flying Virgin Upper Class from JFK to London using Flying Blue miles. He's now looking forward to his upcoming trip to Japan, where he'll experience JAL's first class. Justin's tip of the week is to always work on hitting minimum spending requirements to continue building points, as it's essential to unlock valuable rewards.Links to news discussedChase Ink Unlimited new elevated bonusSAS joining Skyteam, now bookable via Delta and Flying BlueAmerican Airlines switching to dynamic pricing on Fiji AirlinesIHG is back with another airline partnership. STEVIE MAITA is just 11 years old. When he was eight years old, he started going to the golf range with his grandpa. That sparked a passion that now has resulted in three years of tournament play. He has two Hole-in-Ones! His first tournament win was at Bing Maloney. He played in 41 tournaments last year that included trips to Texas, Washington, and a lot of stints in San Diego. And this August, Maita will be returning to play in the U.S. Kids' Golf World Championship at Pinehurst. That's right the same Pinehurst that has hosted both the Men's and Women's U.S. Open as well as the Ryder Cup. So how does he do it? That question and more are answered today.HOST STEVE BUZZARD on Stevie Maita | "As a former teacher, this is the fun part! Getting to see kids like Stevie enjoy success outside of my classroom. This week we’re going back to a favorite episode from 2015. During World War II, something happened that nobody ever talks about. This is a tale of mysterious balloons, cowboy sheriffs, and young children caught up in the winds of war. And silence, the terror of silence. Reporters Peter Lang-Stanton and Nick Farago tell us the story of a seemingly ridiculous, almost whimsical series of attacks on the US between November of 1944 and May of 1945. With the help of writer Ross Coen, geologist Elisa Bergslien, and professor Mike Sweeney, we uncover a national secret that led to tragedy in a sleepy logging town in south central Oregon. Check out pictures of the ghostly balloons here. Special thanks to Annie Patzke, Leda and Wayne Hunter, and Ilana Sol. Special thanks also for the use of their music to Jeff Taylor, David Wingo for the use of "Opening" and "Doghouse" - from the Take Shelter soundtrack, Justin Walter's "Mind Shapes" from his album Lullabies and Nightmares, and Michael Manning for the use of "Save". The Memory Palace is a proud member of Radiotopia. Music We hear Waltz from the score to Angels & Insects. Movements IV and II from David Liptak’s Serenade for Alto Sax and Strings. A bit of Violin Solo no. 1 from Peter Broderick. Some of Zucht 2 from Machienfabrik. A bit of Origami Tulips from Lullatone. Unseen Forces from Justin Walter. Midnight Moon from Annalisa Tornfelt and Gideon Freudman Ida Lupino from Paul Bley’s Changes album from 1965. And Lost Fur (Reprise) from the score to Where the Wild Things Are. Notes Many of my favorite things I read for this piece were contemporary newspaper tributes upon her death in 1911. They’re easy to find. By far the most useful thing I read was Lenore Skomal’s *The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter: The Remarkable True Story of American Heroine, Ida Lewis. *It’s very well researched and highly readable.
It's that time of the year again - end of the year Best Of list time! It's always a difficult task to pick albums for one of these lists. But it's also fun because I get to sort through a bunch of music and it's definitely cool to have a look at other lists and discover a ton of things I missed. There is no way these lists are close to being definitive. A lot of ambient releases can tend to blur from one into the next and the difference between making the list and not making it can boil down to what mood I was in when I first heard the album. There's so much excellent music being released on a weekly basis it's impossible to keep up so this list and mix is just a bunch of stuff that I liked this past year. Here are a few other good year in review lists: http://www.astrangelyisolatedplace.com/blog/2017/12/5/asip-reflection-on-2017 https://irregularcrates.com/2017/12/12/end-of-2017-a-list-and-mix-by-harry-towell/ http://ambientmusicguide.com/best-of-year/best-albums-of-2017/ https://www.popmatters.com/best-ambient-instrumental-albums-2017-2513144740.html?page=2 My best of list is more of a best instrumental music list than just straight ambient. The mix is mostly ambient but the list contains jazz, instrumental & ambient. According to my Spotify data I played a lot of 36 last year so it's appropriate that he's got two albums in the top ten. I guess I'm too lazy to write up comments about all the music except to say that there's a lot of good stuff there. So take some time and hunt down these releases, you won't be disappointed.
