Success. This is something we all crave and are trying to attain. Success personally and professionally, but what is it exactly? Can any one person define what success means for everyone? The answer is no. Success is in the eye of the beholder. Og Mandino said: "What is success other than a state of mind? Which two, among a thousand wise men, will define success in the same words;" Success is determined by each and every one of us. So what does success in family life look like? What does it mean? In this podcast we talk about how to define success in family life, we give examples of what successful families do, and we implement habits to help build our successful families. I would guess most of us are already doing this, we are already in the thick of it and doing a lot of good, but sometimes we just need to clarify and narrow down what exactly we want. Listen in to today's podcast for more on building successful families! The family explored iconic attractions earning bonus points through Rakuten for ticket purchases. They wrapped up the trip with a positioning flight to Amsterdam. While Justin and his travel companions had a smooth return flight to the U.S., his parents faced a different experience. Their itinerary was hit by a lengthy delay, resulting in an unplanned overnight stay in Chicago. This situation served as a reminder to stay calm and make use of available resources when irregular operations (IROPS) occur. On a positive note, they successfully filed a UK261 claim to compensate for the inconvenience. Justin concludes with practical family travel tips—plan your transportation, bring portable strollers, and use Uber for ease. — Through Jim's passion for personal development and family enrichment, he was discovering and putting into practice the principles, values and beliefs that make a life full of peace, joy, purpose and love possible. Twenty years ago he wrote s definition of a “successful family” — A successful family is one whose members speak with respect, honor difference, provide a nurturing environment, empower each other, and truly enjoy being together. They have a knack for really enjoying and appreciating the good times, while at the same time, they can effectively deal with any difficult issues that come their way. There is a sense of peace, joy, warmth, and love within their home. While Jim's family doesn't always meet this definition, they experience it more often than not. Most importantly, when they start to drift away from this ideal or they are confronted with a new obstacle, Jim knows how to lead them back. Now, he finds himself at a point in his life where he is being called to share what he has learned during his life as a father and a husband so Jim founded the Family Enrichment Academy as a vehicle to fulfill this calling. The mission of The Family Enrichment Academy is to share 40 years of lessons and hard-earned wisdom. To empower parents to be the hero within their families. To teach the principles, values and beliefs that will lead to a life and a family full of peace, joy, warmth, and love. Jim's first priority is to guide families along their second journey - the journey of fulfillment. His lifetime of study and experience as a husband and parent has taught him that this is where miracles happen! Wealthy families often face significant decisions about the ultimate dispensation of their wealth. Uniquely successful clients typically want to transfer some of their wealth to the next generation or two. Many also wish to make philanthropic gifts during and after their lifetimes. Unfortunately, some people make these decisions without a clear sense of the impact that a gift would have on their own future financial security and, as a result, delay making meaningful gifts. Here, Scott and Ken show how an advanced financial planning tool can create a gifting capacity analysis to help families answer the question “How much can I afford to give?” The information contained herein reflects the views of AllianceBernstein L.P. or its affiliates and sources it believes are reliable as of the date of this production. You may have heard the phrase “shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations” when talking about family business and succession planning. The statistics generally back this up, given only one-third of family businesses make it through the second generation, and only 13 percent make it through the third generation (2021 HBR study). But what if that doesn’t have to be the case? This episode is a real-life story on how Rachel Wallis Andreasson’s family business has successfully passed on their company(s) to the second–and now the third–generation. Rachel shares how her father started the business with one gas station and what her role was in doubling the company to over 1,000 employees and multiple companies. It was not all rainbows and unicorns. There have been plenty of challenges along the way (setting up family governance, separating leadership roles from ownership roles, deciding how to handle the future direction of the company, who should be CEO, how to handle leaders who are not part of the family, how to handle leaders that ARE part of the family, what role outside advisors play, and how the equity and distributions should be handled). This episode is a shining example for owners of family businesses (as well as non-family businesses) on how to set up your company to last generations. // WATCH THE INTERVIEW ON YOUTUBE: Intentional Growth™ Podcast What You Will Learn What led Rachel to rejoin the family business after working in corporate America for a while. How Rachel’s family defined leadership and shareholder roles. Why no family member got an elevated salary for being a “shareholder.” The three benefits of being a shareholder in a family business. How the family transition was handled from the first generation to the second. The various advisors that Rachel and her family used, the roles they played, and whether she thought they were worth it or not. Why the shift from a family business to a family run company was difficult. Why getting an outside consultant when needed was so beneficial to growing the family business. How Rachel and the board decided on how to reinvest and take distributions. Why Rachel left the family business–and how they handled it–after doubling the size of the company. // USE YOUR FINANCIALS TO CLARIFY A PATH TOWARDS A MORE VALUABLE BUSINESS: Intentional Growth Financial Assessment Bio: Rachel Wallis Andreasson joined Wallis Companies in 1993 and first served on the acquisition team that doubled the size of the company. Following the acquisition, she spent a year as a territory manager and then moved into the corporate headquarters to create a training department. From there, she added human resources, information technology, recognition, and retail operations. Prior to joining Wallis, she worked at South Seas Plantation in Florida as the training coordinator. Prior to South Seas Plantation, she worked for Pepsico managing Taco Bell quick-serve restaurants in Miami. Interview Quotes: 10:12 - “It was part of our identity. We talked about it at the dinner table. We all rolled quarters. We were all a part of the business at some point.” - Rachel Wallis Andreasson 16:03 - “I think for your own personal confidence, knowing you can go out and work for a another company–knowing how those companies operate–becaus
