With a career spanning over three decades, Karen Knight is a seasoned professional renowned for her unwavering commitment to the not-for-profit sector. Having navigated various leadership roles in both the private and public sectors, Karen's journey highlights her adaptability and versatility.  Key Takeaways:Before looking for volunteers, establish the roles that they will fill or come up with a list of tasks that they will do. Know who you are looking for and what they're going to do. Keep your volunteers happy by making them feel appreciated. Thank every volunteer in every shift and in specific if possible. If you can't be specific, then show them that you see what they're contributing. Talk to your volunteers. If you listen, people tell you about what they want. Don't spend time and energy arranging an event for the volunteers that they may not necessarily like. Instead, ask them what they want. Volunteers are not merely “free workers”. The senior leadership needs to realize the value of investing in their volunteer program. One change that could make an impact is to hire a volunteer manager who's qualified and appropriately funded. Being a volunteer manager is a senior leadership position.  “The more people who are involved in your mission, the faster it'll advance, you get to your mission sooner. The more people you bring in, the more ideas you have, the more enthusiasm you have - it just builds on itself.” “You have to be ready for your volunteers. Otherwise, it's, you're frustrating them and you're not making any difference to your cause. Once you know who you're looking for, you will find them.” “You need to have the buy-in of the senior executive of the board to invest in the [volunteer] program. You need to realize that [managing volunteers] is a senior leadership position and treat it as such and fund it as such.” - Karen Knight Reach out to Karen Knight at:Website: https://karenknight.ca/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karen-knight-consulting/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KarenKnightConsulting  Ask for and receive all you want need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy. The best organizations have the most committed people involved.  It doesn't matter if it's a non-profit group or a money-printing corporation.     The most generous cultures attract the best talent (and the more loyal customers).  It's important that you create an environment in which people want to participate.     Karen Knight is a mentor, consultant, speaker, and lifelong volunteer herself.  She has quite an eclectic mix of skills but her self-proclaimed “wiggle” career path has led her to training organizations and people on how to lead and attract the best volunteers.  You'll be sure to notice the parallels between recruiting volunteers and hiring great people in a for-profit business.     You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: https://www.bobdepasquale.com/podcast/karenknight

Volunteers are the fuel that keeps nonprofit organizations humming. Not discounting volunteers' hard work to serve nonprofits' missions, volunteers and how they talk about their experiences working with their favorite organizations provide the thrust that brings an abundance of donations, interest, and other volunteers into the system. In short, when you treat your volunteers well and create an experience that a) positions them as the heroes in your mission story and b) treats their time as an invaluable resource not to be wasted, you'll be on the path to real success.See, many nonprofits position the organization as the hero of their story. In this narrative, the organization is cast as the creator of the majority of the thrust leading the charge to fulfill its mission.Turning that framework on its head to position the volunteer as the hero is a fantastic way to encourage better engagement and attract more volunteers to your organization. It's a subtle shift that can be challenging, but magic happens when you get it right. This shift in messaging helps bring volunteers into the system as they see themselves cast that the hero. Who wouldn't want to work with an organization that views its volunteer force through that lens?Once you have enticed your volunteers to take action to engage with your organization is the next area in which planning and process development works wonders.Crafting an onboarding process and following that process each and every time a volunteer offers to engage with your organization is paramount. Have a plan, make the volunteers feel welcome and valuable, and ensure they don't feel that their time was wasted. When you nail these two elements of your organization, you will see an uptick in your repeat volunteerism, your helpers will start recruiting for you, and you will see referral-based donations start rolling in.That's a long introduction to this week's guest on Relish THIS, Karen Knight. Karen has worked in the nonprofit space since first volunteering at age 11 and has been helping nonprofits improve their volunteer engagement ever since. Her consulting business helps nonprofit organizations knock their volunteer engagement out of the park by developing proven, repeatable processes and a better understanding of effective volunteer engagement and management. If you leverage the talent and hard work of volunteers, this episode is tailor-made for you.Dig in to see a different approach to volunteerism. Links: Karen Knight Consulting Ask: Show your appreciationThank your volunteers on every shift

Matthew Layton presents Studio 1 – Vision Australia's weekly look at life in Australia from a low vision and blind point of view. This week Matthew gets a lesson in how to be a professional broadcaster from Nas Campanella. You know Nas from her bulletins on Triple J and from her reports on the Disability Royal Commission  for ABC Television, but what you may not know is that Nas is blind. In spite of her vision impairment, Nas is at the top of her profession, but 76% of adults who are low vision or blind are not currently in full time employment. Matthew talks to Studio 1's official emotional guru, registered counsellor Tammey Candeloro, about the effect that long-term unemployment can have on the mental health of people with a vision impairment.  And, in the search for a solution, Matthew talks to Vision Australia's General Manager Client Services, Karen Knight, about her career, and her work helping Vision Australia's blind and low vision clients into employment. We conclude our Vision and Eye-Health Feature, “THE EYES HAVE IT” as we chat with Karen Knight, the Queensland General Manager of Vision Australia, about the wonderful services offered by VA for the vision impaired in our community. We look into the sad reality that, for many older Queenslanders, this time of year can be a lonely experience, and how organisations like the Red Cross reach out to people in this situation. The truth is we can ALL help to make a difference by giving some of our time to reach out to relatives, neighbours and even complete strangers, bringing some joy and ‘belonging’ to those in our community who might be lonely, socially isolated or unwell. We chat with COTA Queensland’s Lisa Hodgekinson about Emergency Respite during the holiday period, and also discuss how a small change in your shopping habits can help those in need ! It’s been fantastic having the pleasure of your company throughout this year, Thank You for your support and encouragement ! … Radio COTA will be back with our first Podcast for 2018 on Friday the 12th of January, so stay tuned for that ! On behalf of everyone at COTA Queensland, we wish you a Joyous Christmas and a Peaceful, Safe and Revitalising New Year ! So, make yourself a cuppa, put your feet up, and enjoy all that Radio COTA brings to you .. Please send us your feedback and suggestions, we'd love to hear from you ...
