Today is the anniversary of the Covenant School shooting, which killed three adults — Mike Hill, Katherine Koonce and Cynthia Peak — and three children — Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney and Hallie Scruggs — on March 27, 2023.  Last year, there were many events, both planned and organically happening, in the weeks and months after. This year, there is really the one, collectively. This week for What Where When-sday, we talk to some of the organizers behind Linking Arms for Change, which will form a human chain from Vanderbilt Children's Hospital to the capitol tonight. Organizations like Moms Demand Action and local clergy have announced their attendance. The nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition behind the event, Voices for a Safer Tennessee, began 11 months ago and now has chapters in all 95 counties in the state. Its board chair, Todd Cruse, and well-known musician and performer, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, sat down with us to discuss the event and the last year.

Sarah Neumann, News Channel 5 Nashville: https://www.newschannel5.com/news/they-saw-the-bodies-covenant-school-mom-describes-how-the-shooting-affected-families Transcription: I'm not here because I want to be here. I hate public speaking. But Covenant School is my community, my son's school. It's filled with staff who've become friends and whom we love dearly. When I first met Katherine Koonce our beloved head of school three years ago she told me Covenant was intentional to make sure every child was loved and known and prepared, and those weren't empty words. In our nearly three years there I have witnessed every staff member call my son by name; they know his interests his strengths his struggles. They know our whole family. On March 27th at 10:38 am, I was at Green Hills about a mile from the school when a friend reached out, to ask where my 5 year-old son Noah was. She heard on social media that there was an active shooter; tweet from the Nashville Fire Department that they were responding to an active aggressor. I said no, it's a drill; it has to be a drill. I called my dear friend who's the librarian. She answered with terror in her voice that I don't have words to describe, screaming and crying. She managed to get out the words that she and her son were okay—her son was home sick—and that it wasn't a drill. My own son Noah was okay; he was getting a haircut with his dad, but the rest of our community was inside that building: my friends; our children; so many people we love in that building, our safe space. My 2 year-old and I parked; we ran down as fast as we could to the school. The roads were blocked off; there were cops everywhere. We hadn't even received word from the school yet. I texted our pre-school moms thread: Active shooter at Covenant. I could barely type the words. My body was shaking. At that moment that innocent moms' text thread was forever changed, from a place where we shared pictures and reminders about dress-up days, to now coping through trauma and things parents should never have to discuss. I frantically called friends, promising to try to find their babies. We got word quick from the school confirming the nightmare. The shooter was down, and a reunification site was in place. I got there as fast as I could, and my husband and Noah joined. I will never be able to describe what it was like, sitting in that church. I didn't feel like I was in my own body. Holding our friends, praying, waiting to hear if their kids were alive, piecing together things people saw and heard. All we knew was 7 people were dead. Texted friends, teachers, begging “please text us the word ‘safe'.” We got confirmation that our son's teachers were okay, and started hearing back from others. His art teacher he adores; his PE teacher he loves because he'll make mischief with him, and our dear pastor. The first mom was told her kid was gone. The screams and sorrowing wails. I've worked in pediatric oncology for 13 years. I've held kids in my arms as they've died, way too many times. Nothing compares to the scream of that mom. We kept learning about more staff members, but no one saw or heard about Katherine. We all knew. We knew there was nowhere else she would be other than in that church with us and with the students. My best friend kept asking if anyone had seen her dear friend. No one had. She knew, too. She knew what it meant, if she wasn't in that reunification room by that time. The last 3 weeks have been deeply painful. Our days are spent hearing children as young as 3 years old describe in horrific detail what they saw and heard. Third graders saw the dead bodies of their friends, not just coffins. Their classmates. They sat in those rooms, shielded by their teachers, with bullets flying over them. We walked to school the other day and saw the bullet holes; we saw where those bodies lay. We went through classrooms that looked like they were frozen in time, with “March 27” still written on the boards. The trauma's not going to dissipate, it's not going to leave us or our children. It'll just find a home within us and we'll learn to live with it. The most painful question I've had to answer from my 5 year-old, who keeps proudly telling me how brave his teachers were, and how they knew exactly how to keep them safe from the bad guy: he asked, “Mommy, how did they know to do the practice? Has this happened before?” And I said, “Yes.” He said, “A lot, Mommy?” I said, “Yes.” We had everything. We had the security. We had locked doors. We had intense active shooter training. The teachers hear AR-15s shot, and the school had to practice locking down for that. They had everything. Our cops are heroes, they didn't hesitate a second. It's not enough. [William Barber: The one thing you didn't have, was banned assault weapons] We don't have banned assault weapons. Sure, we're going to add the bullet-proof glass, but what about when they're on the playground; what about when they're playing soccer? [William Barber: I want y'all to say to her, “You won't bear this grief alone.”] [William Barber: I want the nation to hear what you said. You know the people who say, “The real problem is mental illness.” They are right. It is mental illness, when you can hear this kind of pain, and still be more interested in guns.]

On the last Monday of March, just two weeks before Easter, 200 children between the ages of 3 to 12 sat in their classrooms at the private Christian school The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee. The typical bustling sounds of children playing and learning were suddenly disrupted by the sound of gunshots and shattering glass. The intermittent sounds of gunshots continued for approximately 15 minutes. When they finally went silent, the lives of six innocent people, including three 9-year-olds, were tragically ended, and a community was left traumatized. I will share the details of this tragic event that resulted in the loss of 6 innocent lives, the events leading up to the shooting, and finally, the disappointing, inconsistent, and politicized response from the media and the Biden administration. The last Monday of MarchAudrey Hale was a 28-year-old woman and former student of The Covenant School. She was described by those who knew her as quiet and sweet, and many did not know she had recently begun to identify as a man.She left her parents' home, where she lived, wearing a white t-shirt, camouflage pants, and a red baseball cap while carrying a red bag.  Her mother did not know it then, but she likely was carrying several firearms in that bag. They did not know Hale had legally purchased seven guns from five local gun stores and had been planning a mass shooting for months. Hale's parents knew she had owned a firearm, but it was their understanding that she had sold it. So, they did not think anything of the red bag she carried that morning when leaving the house. Hale got into her Honda Fit and drove from her house located at the 3000 block of Brightwood Ave to the neighborhood of Green Hills. She arrived in the parking lot of The Covenant School at 9:54 am. At 9:57 am, she sent an Instagram message to her former basketball teammate and friend, Averianna Patton."I'm planning to die today. You'll probably hear about me on the news after I die.""My family doesn't know what I'm about to do. One day this will make more sense. I've left more than enough evidence behind. But something bad is about to happen."Patton calls the Suicide Prevention Help Line and Nashville police. At 10:11 am school, surveillance footage captures Hale at a locked side entrance with glass doors. Hale raises her firearm and shoots out the glass. She then climbs through the doors carrying a Kel-Tec SUB2000, a Grunt rifle, and a 9 mm pistol while wearing a vest carrying additional magazines. It's reported that Hale pulled the fire alarm to lure students and teachers out of their classrooms. At 10:13 am, the first of several 911 calls were placed reporting the shooting. One caller reported leaving the church with six preschool-aged children upon learning about the active shooter threat. The dispatcher was told that the attacker was a white man in camouflage with a vest and an assault rifle.Another caller, a teacher, speaks with a dispatcher in a hushed voice. A child can be heard whimpering in the background. When the dispatcher asks if she is in a safe place, the woman tells the dispatcher they're located upstairs by the art room hallway. Gunshots can be heard in the background. Chad Scruggs – Covenant Presbyterian's senior pastor and the father of one of the victims – called emergency services after learning about the shooting.“Are you inside?” the dispatcher asks after Scruggs says there's an active shooter. “No. I'm the lead pastor. I'm going that way now,” Scruggs replies, adding that he was “getting calls from inside.”There is no sign during the call whether Scruggs knows his daughter had been shot.At 10:25 am, Nashville Metro Police arrive at the school and enter the building, clearing the first floor. Shots can be heard from the second floor. The officers climb up two flights of stairs, arrive at the second floor, and head down a hallway that opens up to what appears to be a reception area with an atrium to the right.  Hale fires at the officers, and the officers return fire.  10:27 am, police confirm that Hale is dead.Hale had fired 157 total rounds and killed six people Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9;  William Kinney, 9; Hallie Scruggs, 9; Katherine Koonce, 60; Cynthia Peak, 61 and Mike Hill, 61.Mike Hill was a school custodian.Katherine Koonce was the head of the Covenant School.Cynthia Peak was a substitute teacher.Hallie Scruggs was a third-grader and daughter of lead Pastor Chad Scruggs. She was classmates with Evelyn Dieckhaus, who was also killed.William Kinney was a third-grader at the Covenant School. What did we learn after the shooting?Hale acted alone when she targeted The Covenant School. However, during an interview with NBC Lester Hold, Nashville police Chief John Drake stated that she had considered other targets, including a mall and possibly family. Still, she was concerned about the security at these other locations and determined that the school was an easier target. Drake stated that the victims were fired upon at random. It has been incorrectly reported that Hale was being counseled by lead Pastor Chad Scruggs, whose daughter Hailey Scruggs was a victim of Hale's. Pastor Scruggs was not counseling Hale and had never met her.Within her belongings, a manifesto was discovered. The Nashville police handed over the manifesto to the FBI, and it has yet to be released. Many are beginning to doubt it will ever be released. On Friday, Nashville Channel 5 reported during a Tennessee Sheriffs' Association meeting that the director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), David Rausch, provided information about the manifesto found at the Nashville shooter's home. According to Rausch, the material found did not provide a clear motive for the shooting and instead consisted of rambling writings. Rausch said the journals did not mention any specific political, religious, or social issues. Instead, the journals seemed to focus on idolizing previous school shooters. This partially contradicts what Chief Drake said during interviews shortly following the shooting. When asked if how she identified had anything to do with her targeting the school Chief Drake responded, “There is some theory to that, we are investigating all the leads, and once we know exactly, we will let you know.”The motive behind the school shooting is still unknown.Hale used "male pronouns" on social media, indicating that Hale was transgender. During the police interview with the parents, the parents stated that Hale was under a doctor's care for an "emotional disorder." What that disorder was and how she was being treated is not known. The Daily Mail reports that Hale, who recently changed her name to Aiden and identified as gay and transgender, was at odds with her Christian parents, who refused to accept her gender identity. The Daily Mail also reported that Hale had to wait to leave their home in order to dress as a man. A source close to the Hale family told the Daily Beast that Hale was autistic but high-functioning — “and relatively recently announced she was transgender, identifying as he/him.”In a video of an art show from 2022, she was still using the name, Audrey. Her LinkedIn profile also had the name Audrey although she listed he/him pronouns. She also signed off on one of her last Instagram messages to her former classmate Audrey (Aidan). Hale graduated from Nossi College of Art & Design in Nashville and worked as a freelance graphic designer and a part-time grocery shopper. Hale won "Most Improved" and "Class Participation" awards from Nossi. She was deeply affected and “heartbroken” over the 2022 death of Sydney Sims, a girl she was “infatuated” with, who had played on the same basketball team in school, according to Samira Hardcastle, a classmate of both girls. Hale had posted a TikTok on a since-deleted account, “iam_aiden10,” dedicated to “Syd” in February. Hardcastle said she had last seen Audrey a month ago and thought Audrey “looked up” to Sydney.Maria Colomy, a former instructor at the Nossi College of Art & Design, who taught Hale, said her transition began around the same time as she was grieving the loss of her friend Sydney. The victims are not big enough victims to merit the same response as real victims. It is unfortunate but not surprising that politicians, activists, and the media will politicize an event to push an agenda or narrative in the aftermath of a tragic event. And let me be clear everyone does it, but the politicization and response, or lack of response, was particularly telling in this instance. In virtually every past mass shooting that took place within a religious or minority community, hatred against the victims' religious beliefs or community affiliation is mentioned. However, the killing of six innocent Christians by a woman who identified as transgender was not given any significance by the Biden administration or the mainstream media. The media's bias is showingOf course, the media reported on the event, provided details about Hale and published obligatory gun control articles. But they never once presented the hypothesis of this being a hate crime. Even in the past, accusations of hate crime or extremism would typically follow an event like The Covenant School shooting. There were no articles about the previous recent shootings perpetrated by transgender individuals, the increased hateful language on social media towards Christians, or the two planned shootings by transgender individuals thwarted by authorities the week following The Covenant School shooting. The media instead focused on making sure that they were using the correct pronouns, and CBS News executives told their staffers, not to mention Hale's transgender identity. “The shooter's gender identity has not been confirmed by CBS News,” a memo obtained by the NY Post stated. “As such, we should avoid any mention of it as it has no known relevance to the crime. Should that change, we can and will revisit.”A freelance reporter for NBC News, Benjamin Ryan, attempted to link the shooting to the Daily Wire, headquartered in Nashville, and its commentators Ben Shapiro and Matt Walsh. The tweet has since been deleted, but screenshots are forever. Not surprisingly, the Biden administration and the media were on the same page, but politicians have to politician and take it a step further. Biden's bias is showingIt has been over two weeks since the small community of Covenant Presbyterian was forever changed. Biden has yet to mention the victims were Christian or that a hate crime was committed, even though in the past, he has been very quick to make such connections even when there was no evidence of it being the case. A reminder, this occurred a short time before Easter and within the same week of Trans Day of Visibility. Tenessee had recently been in the news for passing bills restricting drag shows in front of minors and banning medical transition for minors. Also, a protest outside the Supreme Court called “Tran Day of Vengence,” organized by the Trans Radical Activist Network (TRAN) was planned for Friday.Biden first publicly mentioned the shooting while delivering remarks at the Small Business Administration's Women's Business Summit in the East Room of the White House. But before he mentioned the shooting, he joked about ice cream, which led to a very awkward moment. After this, he wanted to “speak very briefly about the school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee.” Calling it “sick,” “heartbreaking,” and a “family's worst nightmare.” He then shifted to a call for an “assault weapons” ban. However, Biden does not broach the victims' Christian faith or the fact that the perpetrator was trans. The day following the shooting, Sen. Josh Hawley requested that the FBI investigate the shooting as a hate crime. When Biden is asked if he believes the shooting could be a hate crime against Christians, he responds, “I don't know.” When told that Hawley believes it was, he jokes and responds, “Then probably not.”He does, however, release a Trans Day of Visibility statement accusing “MAGA extremists” of “advancing hundreds of hateful and extreme state laws that target transgender kids and their families.” And when he finally does address the shooting on social media, the Christian faith of the victims is omitted. Suddenly, he is not addressing the clear religious nature of a shooting. He did call for an “assault weapons” ban, though he did not mention the Nashville shooting in the tweet, at least not until a later tweet, where he wrote that "we owe them action." The action, of course, is an “assault weapons” ban. Biden did issue a proclamation directing that flags be put at half-staff in honor of the victims. Four days later, the White House released a statement and fact sheet on Transgender Day of Visibility. That same day on Instagram and Twitter, Biden shared a graphic stating, "Transgender People Deserve Love, Dignity, and Respect." The caption read, “To the Transgender community: we want you to know that you are seen – made in the image of God and deserving of dignity, respect, and support. And, know this. You are so brave.Affirming your child's identity is one of the most powerful things you can do to keep them safe and healthy. Our Administration will never quit fighting to stop discrimination, stand against unjust state laws, and guarantee everyone the fundamental right and freedom to be who they are.”This administration does not care about its Christian citizens. It doesn't fit well with the political agenda or its voter base. Not when the victims are white Christians, and the perpetrator is trans. But it fully supports the medical transition of minor children, making them lifelong medical patients. During a press briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said (THE FOLLOWING), "LGBTQI+ kids are resilient. They are fierce. They fight back. They are not going anywhere, and we have their back. This administration has their back."Biden is comfortable attributing LGBT and religious hate as motivesIf you are saying, “But we don't know the motive. They haven't released the manifesto.” I would say you are correct; we do not know the motive. But that has never stopped Biden in the past from politicizing religion or the marginalized identity of victims in other shootings and attributing them to unconfirmed motives. On March 17, just over a week before the Covenant School shooting, Biden commemorated the two-year anniversary of the Atlanta-area spa shootings in which eight people — six of them Asian women — were killed. Using the opportunity to bring attention to anti-Asian hate. In his statement, Biden said, “I want you to know that I see you. My administration sees you. And we are determined to end the scourge of gun violence, anti-Asian hate, and all forms of racism and extremism in this Nation.” The only problem is authorities attribute his motive to sex addiction, not racism. In 2022 Biden was completely fine with mentioning the religion of the victims of the 2012 Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, resulting in six deaths. The perpetrator did have a history of white supremacist sympathies. Still, the motive was not confirmed, but Biden was comfortable mentioning it as "the deadliest attack on Sikh Americans in our nation's history." He also said that attacks on houses of worship have become more common over the past decade, and “No one should fear for their life when they bow their head in prayer or go about their lives in America.”In 2021, Biden and Vice President Harris released statements to commemorate the three years since the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting that left 11 dead. The victim's faith was a central focus of their statements. It is reported that the perpetrator made anti-Semitic comments during the shooting. Again, Biden was comfortable mentioning the victims' faith. Also in 2021, just four months after Biden was sworn in as President, he designated the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, a national memorial to honor the 49 people killed in a 2016 mass shooting. He urged Congress to pass laws explicitly protecting the civil rights of LGBTQ people. "Our presence this afternoon makes a very strong statement: Pride is back at the White House," Biden said after being introduced by Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is openly gay, and a young transgender man, Ashton Mota.Only thing is that authorities attribute the motive of the shooting at the Pulse nightclub to an act of Islamic extremism by a 29-year-old U.S. citizen of Afghan descent, it was civil rights activists said the massacre was a hate crime targeting gay men and Latinos that frequented the club.In November 2022, a man entered the LGBTQ nightclub Club Q in Colorado Springs, killing 5 and injuring 25 people. Following the shooting, Biden denounced the targeting of the LGBTQ community.“Places that are supposed to be safe spaces of acceptance and celebration should never be turned into places of terror and violence,” he said in a statement. “We cannot and must not tolerate hate.”There was no known motive at the time of his statement, and there still isn't. However, in the footnotes of court filings, it is indicated that the shooter identifies as non-binary, uses they/them pronouns, and wants to be referred to with the prefix Mx. Whether this is true or a tactic is not known, just like the motive. Visiting the victimsDepending on the political optics a tragedy can provide will determine if it merits a personal visit, a phone call, a first lady visit, or a lie. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden (can't forget she is a doctor) attended the candlelight vigil honoring the six victims of the shooting at the Covenant School. She did not meet with any of the families or make any remarks. President Biden has made no contact with any of the victims' families or members of Covenant Presbyterian. On May 14, 2022, a shooting occurred at a Tops Friendly supermarket in a predominantly black neighborhood in Buffalo, NY, killing 10 victims. Biden visited Buffalo a few days later and spoke a short distance from the grocery store calling the shooting a “murderous, racist rampage” and “domestic terrorism.” He placed flowers at the memorial near the store, met with the family of the victims and first responders, and condemned white supremacy as a poison that must be rejected.Following the Robb Elementary School shooting in the predominantly Latin community of Uvalde, 19 students died. Biden and the First Lady visited Uvalde and met with the victims' families. In November 2022, Biden and the First Lady called and spoke with the owners of Club Q on Thanksgiving. During the call "reiterated support for the vibrant and strong Club Q family and commitment to fighting back against hate and gun violence," according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). On January 21, a 72-year-old Vietnamese man killed 11 people at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, CA, a predominantly Asian community, after an all-day Lunar New Year Festival. Brandon Tsay disarmed the man in the lobby. The shooter fled and was later found dead in a van from a self-inflicted gunshot. The motive was speculated to be a family dispute, but it remains unknown.Biden later visited Monterey Park on March 14, where he met Tsay and announced an executive order to increase the number of background checks. "All have lived lives of love, sacrifice, and service for their families, for their community," Biden said during his remarks. "They represent a bigger story. Who we are as Americans embodying the simple truth that our diversity is the strength of this nation."Finally, if Biden can't visit the families of shooting victims, he lies and says he did. In a 2019 campaign ad, Biden claimed that he visited and met with every one of the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting. The problem is that Connecticut State Senate candidate JT Lewis, the brother of one of the victims, says it was a lie."This is a lie," wrote Lewis in a tweet. "Obama came to Sandy Hook and met with every family. Joe Biden DID NOT. In fact, my family was not allowed on Air Force One because we refused to support Obama/Biden gun control efforts."Also, I found no news reports or images that indicated Biden had accompanied Obama to visit the families of the Sandy Hook victims. It's Meseidy is a reader-supported publication. These horrible events have a lasting traumatic effect on the people left behind to pick up the pieces. I am not going to debate the solution or the cause of these shootings. That debate is happening all over social media, the news, and in the halls of Congress. I want to talk about the biased response in the aftermath of this tragedy. While other tragedies affiliated with so-called marginalized communities merited phone calls, visits, and anti-hate remarks and campaigns from our administration, The Covenant School families did not. All they got was a vigil photo op visit from the First Lady, where she didn't even speak, and ice cream jokes from the President before he made any mention of the tragedy. But he did not forget to call for an “assault weapons” ban before quickly shifting to declaring support for the medical gender transition of minors and celebrating Trans Day of Visibility. The media's larger concern was protecting Hale and, by proxy, they believed they were protecting the transgender people. They were all very careful to respect her pronouns and not to mention too often that the victims were Christian unless it was to say how her Christian parents did not support her in her decision to transition. The message is clear, a white Christian community and its victims are not victims enough to merit the same response as those the media and the Biden administration deem true victims. For the media and this administration to care and call out hate, you have to have the right skin color, religion, and/or be LGBTQ.To donate to The Covenant School and Covenant Presbyterian Church, click the button below and select “March 27 Fund”Thank you for reading It's Meseidy. Our community was rocked by tragedy last week... a shooter opened fire at Covenant School in Nashville, killing 6 people, and leaving us feeling devastated and frustrated and incredibly sad. We are all left shaken, and wanting to take real action amidst the immobilizing divisiveness we see all around us. While our listeners and viewers know that the 3 of us have very different views on politics, religion, parenting, etc... there is only one SIDE for us here - the side of keeping our children safe. We are the MOMS, and we wanted to have an honest conversation about the terror we felt that day, the anxiety we're left with, how we're talking to our children about what happened, the hours we're spending figuring out what our routes to change look like, and how we can make some noise to incite that change. Our hearts are breaking for the families of William Kinney, Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, Katherine Koonce, Mike Hill and Cynthia Peak, and the many other families affected by these horrific events. If you'd like to get involved, here is a list from Nashville Lifestyles with many ways to support our community.  Over the coming weeks, we will continue to share the ways we're taking action for change. Mike walks us through the event itself, scripture being bastardized in response and what the Bible actually says about violence. Lord, we grieve so heavily, again, over this loss of precious and innocent life. We pray that their communities would come alongside them, love and sit with them. We pray that we do not grow calloused and accepting of this continuing and escalating violence. Father, we ask that you would soften the hearts and open the eyes of your people. That they would see this violence for what it is. That they would choose life and the edification of humanity over rights and tools of destruction Father, we pray that you would give courage and integrity to those we have chosen to lead. Give them discernment and clarity, wisdom and empathy. Father, allow them to see these tragedies for what they are and to act accordingly. Father, grant us all the courage to see your kingdom here and now, to advocate for the upside down nature of you vision and to love our neighbors, all of them. May they know us by our love. The Daily Still Podcast - Guided Christian Meditations and Devotions

Today we hold space for grief. Grief, suffering, and loss touch all parts of our world in communal and personal ways. This week here in the United States, right in our hometown of Nashville, TN, we have experienced the tragedy and trauma of gun violence. We can become desensitized and unable to process so much tragic news. Often words alone seem inadequate. We need silence in the presence of a loving and compassionate God who sees our tears. There is importance in sharing space for grief, to sit with our feelings, and help one another process our emotions. In this meditation, we offer space to grieve and mourn - for ourselves and/or for those who are mourning. We make space to honor and remember each precious life. We make space to get in touch with our own feelings. And we make space to consider how God is calling us to action and to show compassion to those hurting. We'll be meditating on a prayer from Psalm 57, TPT. We invite you to prepare a quiet place for this time of meditation. Perhaps light a candle. Don't rush or hurry this time. Linger as long as you need to process your feelings. Allow the Spirit of God to minister to the places in your heart that need to be comforted and healed. Have mercy on me, O God…for in you my soul takes refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 57:1 NLT In Memory of: Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9; William Kinney, 9 Hallie Scruggs, 9. It's Friday, March 31st, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Nigerian Muslims killed pastor, kidnapped wife On March 23rd, Fulani Muslim herdsmen killed a pastor in Kaduna state, Nigeria, just two weeks after terrorists killed a Baptist pastor's son in the same area, reports The Christian Post. Rev. Musa Mairimi of the Evangelical Church Winning All was killed in his home and his wife was kidnapped at gunpoint. In Romans 3:15-18, Paul wrote, “Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know. There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Trump indicted in New York Yesterday afternoon, former president Donald Trump was indicted by a New York City grand jury in Manhattan, making him the first former president to be charged with a crime in American history, reports CBS News.  In fact, CNN claims that he has been indicted on 30 counts related to business fraud. The Manhattan District Attorney, Alvin Bragg, has been investigating Trump for allegedly falsifying business records in connection with a "hush money" payment made in 2016 to a disreputable actress. The charge or charges against Trump are sealed, but they will be unsealed in the future. CBS News legal analyst Rikki Klieman said, “He will be processed. He will have a mugshot. He will get a booking number. He will give fingerprints ... and ultimately whether or not he will be handcuffed is discretionary for the police, in this case the NYPD." On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history. … I believe this witch hunt will backfire massively on Joe Biden. The American people realize exactly what the radical left Democrats are doing here." Then, on Fox News, Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, said this. HABBA: “I think his sentiments are that this is the result of him leading in the polls, doing incredibly well. He is the leading candidate. When people are afraid of someone being successful and fixing the mess that our country is, they come after you. This is the same thing that President Trump has been dealing with for years. He's disappointed in what has become a sad day for our country.” And George Washington Law School professor Jonathan Turley echoed the Trump attorney's sentiments that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's indictment of Trump smacks of politics. TURLEY: “The chaos that is erupting is pretty much the element for Donald Trump. I mean, it's like trying to kill an orca by throwing him into the water. He's obviously doing well in the polls because Alvin Bragg just gave him a proof positive that the criminal justice system is being politicized.” Minnesota train derailment Hundreds of people in Prinsburg, Minnesota had to evacuate after a train hauling ethanol and corn syrup derailed and caught fire early Thursday, reports the Associated Press. Minnesota officials said the BNSF train derailed around 1 a.m. in Raymond, roughly 100 miles west of Minneapolis. That prompted the evacuation of essentially all of the town's 250 homes because they were within 1/2 mile  of the derailment. The evacuation order was lifted around noon. "Trans Day of Vengeance" at Supreme Court April 1st The Trans Radical Activist Network is organizing a "Trans Day of Vengeance" rally to be held tomorrow, April 1st at 11:00 am at the Supreme Court. They claim their rally is not connected to the March 27th murder of three children and three adults at the Covenant Christian School in Nashville, Tennessee at the hands of Audrey Elizabeth Hale, the 28-year-old gunwoman. Hale was pretending to be a man. Their alleged purpose is to protest the various bills in numerous states which will outlaw mutilating surgeries and cross sex hormones for kids. In a statement to Newsweek, organizers condemned Hale's murderous rampage and said the Trans Day of Vengeance "means fighting back with vehemence. We are fighting against false narratives, criminalization, and eradication of our existence." Kentucky bans transgender mutilating surgeries for kids In related news, Kentucky became the latest state to ban puberty-blocking drugs and body-mutilating sex-change surgeries for youth younger than 18 after lawmakers overrode a veto by Democratic Governor Andy Beshear, reports The Christian Post. On Wednesday, the Republican-led Legislature overwhelmingly voted to override Beshear's veto on Senate Bill 150, voting 29-8 in the Senate, followed by 76-23 in the House. Covenant School principal gave her life to protect students And finally, Dr. Katherine Koonce, the principal at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, was among the six Christians murdered by Audrey Elizabeth Hale, but the steps she took that morning and before are credited with helping save lives, reports FaithWire.com. According to Nashville City Councilman Russ Pulley, Koonce was in a virtual meeting when the shooting began. She immediately got off the meeting and “headed straight for the shooter.” He said, “She also made sure the school was prepared with active shooter training and protocols. Those actions saved countless lives.” John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, March 31st in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Ken and Betsey turn their attention to the tragic shooting at the Covenant (Elementary) School in Nashville, Tennessee where three 9-year-old students and three adults, including the school's headmaster, were brutally murdered. The shooter was quickly taken out by courageous first responders who arrived on the scene within minutes. The perpetrator used legally obtained automatic weapons to terrorize the school. Ken and Betsey reflect on the reports of the shooter's identity. They affirm that the killer is entirely responsible for the heinous crime, no question. However, the manifesto left behind by the perpetrator indicates that Audrey Hale identified as transgender. It raises questions about the conservative school's treatment of the LGBTQ community and the shooter's experience there as a young student. Right-wing politicians and religious zealots across the country have targeted transgender individuals, young and old, with all manner of restrictive, moralistic and sometimes draconian legislation and policies.  Ken turns the conversation to a new subject. He shares his most recent read - Celebrities for Jesus: How Personas, Platforms, and Profits Are Hurting the Church by Katelyn Beaty. [This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription.]On Monday morning, at The Covenant School, a private elementary school in Nashville, TN, a mass shooter opened fire over fourteen minutes, killing three children who were students there, all nine years old, and three staff members before police arrived and took out the shooter, mercifully bringing the horror to an end.The children were Evelyn Dieckhaus, William Kinney, and Hallie Scruggs. The staff members were Katherine Koonce (the head of the school), substitute teacher Cynthia Peake, and custodian Mike Hill. According to Gun Violence Archive, this is the 150th mass shooting in the United States this year. GVA is an independent research and data collection organization that defines a mass shooting as “four or more people shot or killed, not including the shooter.”This definition has been criticized by some conservatives, who feel that the metric poorly frames America's gun violence epidemic and accuse those who adopt GVA's definition of “four or more injured” as inflating the problem. They point to the FBI's definition of “mass murder,” which describes any type of violent incident in which four or more people are killed, not just injured.Of course, the more you think about it, that doesn't make much sense. For example, if a mass shooter wounds 10 people—perhaps paralyzing several, to say nothing of other longterm health complications of a bullet ripping through one's body—but only kills one person, that would not fit the definition of a “mass shooting” by the FBI.Nor if a mass shooter wounds 50 people but only kills three. Or wounds 100 people but kills none. Neither of these are “mass shootings” under the FBI's definition.Does that make any goddamn sense? Of course not.Okay, well, fine, conservatives might say, but the threshold is still too low because GVA allows for just four people to be injured—not killed—in order to qualify as a “mass shooting.”Some of them may hint that certain injuries are more qualifying than others. What if, they seem to say, four people are merely grazed by bullets, simply burning their flesh rather than entering their bodies?Gee, I don't know, if their child were merely grazed by a bullet, their tender flesh burned by it, how would they feel? Would they think it's a problem worth addressing?Of course they would, and they'd be right. So, we're sticking with GVA's “mass shooting” definition. Because common sense.Last year, there were 647 mass shootings in the United States. In 2021, there were 690 mass shootings. Since January 1, 2016, GVA has tracked 3,581 mass shootings in the United States. When the carnage at The Covenant School began hitting news and social media in a way that has become nauseatingly familiar, the gun extremists immediately starting doing what they do best: pointing fingers and blaming anything but our country's ludicrously easy access to firearms.Fox News contributor Nicole Parker attempted to posit that “side doors” to schools—meaning physical entrances to schools other than the front—are the real problem here.Bless her heart. There were the other usual excuses by gun extremists — their greatest hits of shifting blaming: that teachers should be armed, that it's an issue of mental health, etc.Of course, I'm not sure anyone expected GOP Congressman Tim Burchett to openly admit he and his conservative colleagues have no interest in finding a good faith solution to the gun violence epidemic. I'm not kidding. Here's the full quote, and I'll even link you to the video:“We're not gonna fix it. Criminals are gonna be criminals. My daddy fought in the Second World War, fought in the Pacific, fought the Japanese — he said ‘Buddy, if someone wants to take you out and doesn't mind losing their life, there's not a whole heck of a lot you can do about it.'”So, there you have it. Criminals are gonna be criminals, the man said. Why bother trying to stop children from being slaughtered? Mr. Burchett's children are homeschooled, by the way. When I first heard of the shooting, my stomach dropped in the same way it has every other time this senseless violence has occurred. And when you find out children were killed, it only compounds that feeling. But this time, on top of that, it was eventually revealed that the shooter—whose name I refuse to mention—was a trans man. Predictably, anti-trans conservatives seized the opportunity to cynically exploit the murder of these children and staff members to further their transphobic propaganda and distract from their own complicity in enabling gun violence. Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed testosterone was to blame, something she has never said all the other times when a cis man was behind a mass shooting. Donald Trump, Jr. and others put up tweets and memes implying trans people are especially violent. You see where this is going. The obvious problem here, of course, for anyone who has mastered 3rd grade math, is that the numbers indicate trans people are substantially less likely to commit gun violence compared to cisgender people and far more likely to be victims of gun violence ourselves.Of the 3,581 mass shootings that have occurred in the United States since January 1st, 2016, four were perpetrated by a trans person. I absolutely refuse to count the Colorado Springs mass shooter who murdered five people at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub, and then attempted to claim, through his lawyers, that he identifies as nonbinary, clearly in an effort to troll the victims. And this after neighbors and police brought forward evidence of his long history of anti-LGBTQ hatred. Thus, of that total number of mass shootings since the start of 2016 and the available data on those mass shooters, cisgender people account for 99.9 percent of them. According to a report released last year by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law—which is considered one of the leading data sources on LGBTQ people—the trans community makes up about 0.6 percent of the 267.8 million people in the United States who are age 13 or older. So, trans people make up 0.6 percent of the population but 0.1 percent of mass shooters, six times less than what would be proportionally expected in an even distribution of mass shooters. It turns out that cis people are disproportionately more likely to be mass shooters.I have no problem recognizing that a trans man murdered these children and staff members. I'm glad police arrived and killed him before he could murder other innocents. But if these anti-trans conservatives are gonna demand trans people answer for him, shouldn't they answer for the 99.9% of mass shooters who aren't trans?I have a feeling we'll never get an answer to that. This week, I am holding the families of these children and staff members in my thoughts. I cannot begin to imagine their suffering, and I am filled with rage at this coward, at this piece-of-s**t, who cruelly took the lives of these innocents.I am praying for two things: 1) a measure of peace and healing that must seem impossible for these families in this moment and 2) that anti-trans conservatives will actually start giving a damn about vulnerable children instead of exploiting their deaths to further a hateful agenda.Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Hale had gained entry by shooting through the glass panes of the front door, which was seen on surveillance footage that was released on Monday night by the Nashville police. Hale would go on to shoot and kill three students and three teachers. Surveillance footage released last night shows Hale's car driving through the school's parking lot. Hale can be seen walking through a hallway as the alarm goes off, gun drawn. "Hale fired a number of rounds inside the Covenant Church/School building. She was armed with these 3 guns and significant ammunition," Nashville PD said in a report. Hale, a transgender shooter, identified as male using the name 'Aiden' and 'he/him' pronouns. Hale killed head teacher Katherine Koonce, church custodian Mike Hill, and substitute teacher Cynthia Peak in an "assassination" style shooting. Hale was a former student of Covenant Christian school and was found with multiple firearms. A search of the family home in Nashville uncovered maps and a manifesto detailing the attack, according to police at a Monday press conference. But the judge said – in a ruling that remains under seal – that Pence can still decline to answer questions related to his actions on January 6 itself, when he was serving as president of the Senate for the certification of the 2020 presidential election, according to one of the sources. The ruling from chief judge James Boasberg of the US District Court in Washington, DC, is a major win for special counsel Jack Smith, who is spearheading the Justice Department investigation. Pence still has the ability to appeal. In the lead-up to the congressional certification vote, Pence faced enormous pressure from Trump and his allies to disrupt lawmakers’ plans to validate Joe Biden’s win. As president of the Senate, Pence was tasked with presiding over the certification proceedings. Trump’s conversations with Pence in the days surrounding the insurrection have been of keen interest to investigators probing the attack. Though Pence declined to testify before the House January 6 committee that investigated the insurrection, people in Trump’s orbit told the committee about a heated phone call he had with Pence the day of the attack in which he lobbed insults at his vice president. Pence and Trump did not speak during the attack on the Capitol itself, in which many of Trump’s supporters angrily sought him out, and Pence narrowly escaped the mob heading to the Senate floor. Nicholas Luna, a former special assistant to Trump, told the committee he remembered Trump calling Pence a “wimp.” Luna said he recalled something to the effect of Trump saying, “I made the wrong decision four or five years ago.” And Julie Radford, Ivanka Trump’s former chief of staff, said she recalled Ivanka Trump telling her that “her dad had just had an upsetting conversation with the vice president.” Radford said she was told that Trump had called Pence “the P-word,” referencing a derogatory term. For Pence’s part, many of his public comments about his conversations with Trump in the days before and after the insurrection have come in a memoir he published last year. In the book, Pence wrote that Trump told him in the days before the attack that he would inspire the hatred of hundreds of thousands of people because he was “too honest” to attempt to overturn the results of the election. Over lunch on December 21, Pence wrote, he tried to steer Trump to listen to the White House counsel’s team’s advice, rather than outside lawyers, a suggestion the then-president shot down.
