Newt talks with legal scholar Jonathan Turley about his bestseller, Rage and the Republic. Turley reveals why Thomas Paine — flawed, brilliant, nearly impossible to like — was the most fascinating figure he's ever researched, and traces Paine's improbable rise from failed Englishman to "penman of the revolution" under Benjamin Franklin's wing. The conversation turns to the French Revolution's unbound passions versus America's structured path to liberty, drawing uneasy parallels to today's unrest in cities like Minneapolis. Turley and Newt dig into socialism's resurgence among young Americans and Europeans, the EU's bureaucratic unraveling, and the coming disruption from AI and robotics. They close on America's 250th anniversary and what it truly means to be American in a revolutionary age.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In part one of Red Eye Radio with Gary McNamara and Eric Harley, after the Virginia Supreme Court struck down a voter-approved Democratic congressional redistricting plan, Democratic lawmakers in the commonwealth notified the court they intend to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. Friday's ruling by the state supreme court delivered another major setback to the party's nationwide battle against Republicans for an edge in this year's midterm elections. The gerrymandering underscores the pushback from the left. Also audio from Bernie Sanders, AOC with her persistent "no billionaires" rant and Jonathan Turley with analysis of the Virginia vote. This prosecution follows a previous case against Comey that was dismissed due to the illegal appointment of Lindsay Halligan. Hawk reviews the motion to dismiss based on selective and vindictive prosecution while highlighting the First Amendment protections for political speech. The term 86 is historically recognized as restaurant jargon for removing an item or customer rather than a violent threat. Jonathan Turley writes, “From redcoats to robots, our challenges have changed. Yet, we have remained. Our greatest danger is not forgetting the history detailed in this book, but forgetting who we were in that history.” On the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, law professor, legal analyst, and bestselling author Jonathan Turley shares his exploration of how the unique origins of American democracy set it apart from other revolutions, whether it can survive and thrive in the 21st century, and how the unfinished story of the revolution will play out in our rapidly changing world. Like many nations, the United States was born from revolution. At the birth of this country, the Founding Fathers faced the quintessential question of self-governance: How do you keep democracy from devolving into anarchy or despotism? As the nation enters a new era marked by artificial intelligence, robotics, and profound economic shifts, Turley says America is again faced with the pressure of radical forces that seek to curtail natural liberties under the guise of popular reform. In this mix, there are many politicians and pundits who are questioning the very principles of American democracy, and some law professors are even calling for scrapping the Constitution. Turley, author of the new book Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution, draws on everything from history to philosophy to the arts to offer a hopeful account of how the lessons of the past can guide us through today's “crisis of faith” in democracy and see us into the future. Trump's Iran Blitz: 3,000 Targets Hit as War Escalates

The Tara Show

The U.S. has struck 3,000 targets inside Iran in just one week, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the war effort is only beginning. With American and Israeli air superiority established, heavier conventional bombing campaigns may soon follow. Meanwhile, polling shows strong public support for the operation—as long as it stays short. But the political battle in Washington is heating up, with Democrats claiming the strikes violate the law while critics accuse them of hypocrisy dating back to the 2011 NATO intervention in Libya under Barack Obama. The debate raises a bigger question: who actually controls America's war powers? Summary: The United States has launched a massive opening phase in its conflict with Iran, striking more than 3,000 targets in the first week. According to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, the campaign is only getting started, with American and Israeli air forces now operating with overwhelming dominance in the skies. Military leaders say the next phase will involve larger conventional bomb strikes on strategic military infrastructure. While the risk of retaliation remains—especially through unconventional attacks—the administration argues the objective is clear: eliminate Iran's nuclear ambitions and cripple its ballistic missile program. Public support for the war currently sits high, with polls suggesting roughly three-quarters of Americans support the operation as long as it remains short and decisive. Meanwhile, the political fight in Washington is intensifying. Democrats claim the strikes violate congressional authority under the War Powers Act. But critics point to the precedent set during the 2011 NATO intervention in Libya, when the Obama administration conducted months of military operations without formal authorization. Legal scholars such as Jonathan Turley argue that historically, presidents have had the authority to initiate hostilities without a formal declaration of war. The debate highlights growing tensions between national security decisions and political divisions in Washington. Key Takeaways: The U.S. has hit 3,000 Iranian targets in the first week of fighting. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the campaign is just beginning. U.S. and Israeli air forces now hold clear air superiority. Polls show strong public support—but only if the conflict stays short. Critics accuse Democrats of hypocrisy over war powers after the 2011 NATO intervention in Libya. Topic Tags: Iran War, U.S. Military, Middle East Conflict, War Powers Debate, Trump Foreign Policy

The U.S.-led campaign against Iran is off to a decisive start, with over 3,000 targets struck and Iran's military crippled. President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stress that overwhelming air superiority—combined with the Israeli Defense Forces—makes a ground invasion unnecessary. Energy markets spike, but experts and the administration insist it's temporary. Meanwhile, Democrats face criticism for opposing the war despite supporting similar actions in the past. This episode breaks down the military strategy, oil market impacts, and partisan contradictions. Episode Summary The Iran conflict continues with rapid U.S. and Israeli strikes crippling Iranian military and leadership structures. President Donald Trump scores the campaign a “12 to 15,” highlighting near-total destruction of Iran's army, navy, and communications, while dismissing the need for a ground invasion or European support. Secretary Pete Hegseth details the strategic advantage of air superiority and the planned use of conventional munitions—gravity bombs ranging from 500 to 2,000 pounds—to target remaining military assets. Oil prices have surged past $100 per barrel amid the strikes on Iranian depots. Energy Secretary Chris Wright reassures markets that the spike is temporary and driven by fear, not actual shortages. President Donald Trump echoes this, emphasizing that short-term disruptions are a small price to pay for neutralizing Iran's nuclear threat. Meanwhile, political scrutiny mounts at home. Senior Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi and Richard Blumenthal, criticize the war despite prior support for similar unilateral actions under Obama—drawing accusations of hypocrisy from legal analysts like Jonathan Turley. The episode also highlights the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, which handles half of China's energy exports but only three percent of U.S. oil, reinforcing that current disruptions are manageable for America while sending a warning to global adversaries. Key Takeaways U.S. and Israeli air forces have crippled Iranian military capabilities; ground invasion deemed unnecessary. Over 3,000 Iranian targets hit in the first week of the campaign. Oil prices spike above $100 per barrel, driven by fear, not supply shortage; expected to normalize. President Donald Trump emphasizes strategic benefits outweigh temporary economic discomfort. Democrats face criticism for opposing the war despite supporting similar actions in past conflicts. Strait of Hormuz disruption impacts global markets more than U.S. domestic supply. The U.S. has struck 3,000 targets in Iran in the first week, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the campaign is just beginning. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump says the war ends only with unconditional surrender. But that's not the only story: a terror incident near Gracie Mansion, media controversy, and sweeping government cuts from the Department of Government Efficiency are all fueling a massive political showdown. Summary: The United States has carried out an aggressive opening phase of its war campaign against Iran, striking roughly 3,000 targets in the first week. According to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, American and Israeli air forces now dominate the skies, allowing the next phase of the operation to expand into large-scale conventional bombing using heavy munitions. Support for the war among Americans remains high—polling suggests roughly 76% support the campaign if it remains short and decisive. The main goals being discussed include eliminating Iran's nuclear ambitions, destroying its ballistic missile program, and crippling its military leadership. President Donald Trump has been clear about the desired outcome: unconditional surrender or the complete dismantling of Iran's ability to wage war. Some political figures, including Lindsey Graham, are already speculating that geopolitical shifts could follow, including potential changes in places like Cuba. The debate in Washington has also reignited questions about presidential war powers. Legal scholar Jonathan Turley argues historical precedent supports presidential authority to initiate hostilities, while critics in Congress say the administration should have sought broader authorization. Meanwhile, controversy erupted in New York after an explosive device was thrown during protests near Gracie Mansion. Early media reports suggested one narrative, but later details pointed to suspects allegedly linked to extremist sympathies, intensifying political and media disputes. Beyond foreign policy, the administration's domestic agenda is also making waves. Data suggests the federal workforce has shrunk significantly under the government downsizing efforts led by the Department of Government Efficiency, part of a broader push to reduce federal bureaucracy. Key Takeaways The U.S. has struck 3,000 Iranian targets in the first week of fighting. Pete Hegseth says larger conventional bombing campaigns are coming next. Polls show 76% public support if the conflict remains short. Donald Trump says the war ends only with unconditional surrender. A terror-related incident near Gracie Mansion triggered media and political controversy. Federal workforce reductions tied to the Department of Government Efficiency are shrinking the size of government. Nationally acclaimed legal scholar Jonathan Turley sits down with Glenn to unpack his new book, "Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution." Through the sharp lens of Thomas Paine — the revolutionary firebrand who played a role in both the American triumph and the French catastrophe — Turley delivers a chilling warning: We've been here before. He draws parallels between the mob-driven chaos of history and today's furious calls to trash the Constitution, pack the Supreme Court, and let raw majorities run wild. Turley spotlights the Minnesota riots: Are they an "insurrection" or a stark symptom of something far more dangerous? Turley suggests the Clinton-Epstein scandal should be "the world's fastest trial" and confronts the AI and robotics revolution head-on, warning of mass unemployment and proposing a solution. "We all love Thomas Paine. We just wish we liked him." — Jonathan TurleyJonathan Turley's new book asks a deceptively simple question: why did the American Revolution become the longest-running successful democracy while the French Revolution devoured itself? The answer, he argues, lies in Madison's "auxiliary precautions" — constitutional safeguards designed not to eliminate rage but to channel it. Turley draws a direct line from Robespierre to today's calls to pack the Supreme Court and abolish the Senate, warning that removing those precautions invites the same mobocracy that sent the Jacobins to the guillotine. But the real provocation comes in the book's second half: with AI and robotics threatening mass unemployment, America may soon face a "kept population" — citizens subsidized by the state who lose their vital relationship to productivity and self-governance. We discuss Thomas Paine (brilliant about humanity, clueless about humans), why rage itself isn't the enemy, and whether the republic built to handle the 18th century can survive the 21st.About the GuestJonathan Turley is the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law at George Washington University Law School. Newt talks with Jonathan Turley, a prominent legal scholar and author, about his new book, "Rage and the Republic: The Unfinished Story of the American Revolution," Turley, who holds the Shapiro Chair for Public Interest Law at George Washington University Law School, explores the unique origins of American democracy and its potential to endure in the 21st century. His book delves into the American Revolution through the perspective of Thomas Paine, highlighting his transformation from a failed individual to a pivotal figure in the revolution. Turley contrasts the American and French Revolutions, emphasizing the role of rage in sparking revolutions and the importance of channeling that rage into productive outcomes, as seen in the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. Their discussion also touches on contemporary challenges, such as the rise of socialism and the impact of AI and robotics on employment, stressing the need to preserve the values that have historically underpinned American success. Turley expresses optimism about America's ability to navigate these challenges, contrasting it with the European Union's bureaucratic struggles. They conclude with reflections on America's continuous evolution and the enduring opportunities it offers for individual advancement.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The fatal shooting occurred during an ICE enforcement operation in south Minneapolis, according to the Department of Homeland Security, which said agents were attempting to make arrests when Good tried to use her vehicle as a weapon against officers, prompting a federal agent to fire in self-defense. Good was pronounced dead after being struck by gunfire. The agent involved has not been publicly identified, and the incident remains under investigation.
