This week, Justin sits down with Kati Marton. Kati is an author, journalist, and correspondent who has worked with National Public Radio and later ABC News, where she was the Bureau Chief in Germany. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Times of London, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and many other publications. She has also published nine books and has served as an advocate for human rights all over the world, including as the chair of the International Women's Health Coalition and on the board of directors for the International Rescue Committee. I invited Kati onto the podcast to discuss the story of Noel Field, a State Department Foreign Service officer and devoted communist ideologue, who was part of a Soviet spy network inside the U.S. government in the years leading up to World War II. Noel ultimately suffered tremendous consequences for his role as a spy, but not as a result of a trial in the U.S. Instead, despite his unfailing loyalty to the communist party, he spent years in a Hungarian prison as a suspected double agent.Connect with Kati:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kati_MartonCheck out Kati's book, True Believer, here.https://www.amazon.com/True-Believer-Stalins-Last-American/dp/1476763763Connect with Spycraft 101:Check out Justin's latest release, Covert Arms, here.spycraft101.comIG: @spycraft101Shop: spycraft-101.myshopify.comPatreon: Spycraft 101Find Justin's first book, Spyshots: Volume One, here.Download the free eBook, The Clandestine Operative's Sidearm of Choice, here.Support the show

Is being an upstander the ultimate connection? The only thing that leads us there is observation, something we are doing less of as a species today... Episode 9 brings you to think deep like this- it is not an easy listen, but one we all need-- but like we need to face the HARD of the state of the world around us- let's do it with ease, care, and appreciating that every bit matters. “We all come into existence as a single cell, smaller than a speck of dust. Much smaller. Divide. Multiply. Add and subtract. Matter changes hands, atoms flow in and out, molecules pivot, proteins stitch together, mitochondria send out their oxidative dictates; we begin as a microscopic electrical swarm. The lungs the brain the heart. Forty weeks later, six trillion cells get crushed in the vise of our mother's birth canal and we howl. Then the world starts in on us.”― Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot SeeThere is no motivation for this action. It seems like this story is missing a part because people just aren't this nonsensically cruel. But where you see no motivation, you understand racism a little more. It's this weird, unprovoked lashing-out, and it never makes any sense. It's why it's so easy for people to believe the police when they beat someone up--because no one would be that cruel just because the person was Black. But they are!”― Amber Ruffin, You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey: Crazy Stories about RacismHolocaust and Human Right CenterPopulation of HungaryLEGAL RULES ON THE PROTECTION OF ANIMALS IN HUNGARYIUCNWWF HungarySustainable Hunting HungaryCall to action: Owls'First they Came For...' Kati Marton, an acclaimed journalist and author The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel, joins The Common Good to discuss the incredible and enduring legacy of German Chancellor, Angela Merkel. Moderated by former US Ambassador to Germany, John Emerson. This definitive biography details the remarkable rise and political brilliance of the most powerful—and elusive—woman in the world. The Chancellor is at once a riveting political biography and an intimate human story of a complete outsider—a research chemist and pastor's daughter raised in Soviet-controlled East Germany—who rose to become the unofficial leader of the West.

"Evangélikus lelkész lányaként nőtt fel az NDK-ban, kutatófizikusként dolgozott, és csak a berlini fal leomlásakor ébredt rá arra, hogy szívesen vállalna szerepet a politikában. Alig tizenöt év alatt Németország első embere, majd Európa nem hivatalos vezetője lett." A rendkívül alapos életrajzi kötetben Kati Marton annak járt utána, vajon mi a titka ennek a rendkívüli felemelkedésnek - erről beszélgetünk. (Az Amerikában is megjelent könyvet Barabás András fordította magyarra.)
Imagine a political leader that is not about celebrity or attention? In a time when we have elected a reality show star as President, when celebrity politics is the lifeblood of the American political class, it's hard to imagine a politician or world leader whose life is private; who keeps their own counsel, who listens first, who shuns celebrity, and yet proves powerful as a leader. Such was Angela Merkel, who served for 16 years as German Chancellor. Its first and only woman Chancellor, and without questions the glue that held parts of the world and certainly the Western Alliance together for many years. What can we all learn from this Greta Garbo of geopolitics? To find out we have to dip into Kati Marton's new biography of Merkel, The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel My conversation with Kati Marton:
In 2015, as the United States tightened its immigration policies under President Barak Obama, then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel opened Germany to one million refugees. And while former US President Donald Trump told the world that the coronavirus would fade away as the weather warms up, she told the world – as a mother and a scientist – to take it seriously. At the same time, Germany's far right skyrocketed in popularity during her tenure. Host Steve Clemons speaks with Kati Marton, author of The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel, to find out more about what she leaves behind.
After 31 years in politics - 16 of them as Germany's leader - Angela Merkel's successor finally took over the country last week. It ended quite a swan song for Merkel, who announced back in 2018 that she would stand down this year. Kati joins Kathryn to talk about her new biography: The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is stepping down after 16 years. Author and former NPR correspondent Kati Marton has written a new biography of Merkel titled, appropriately, The Chancellor. Marton told NPR's Sarah McCammon that Merkel's upbringing in East Germany before the wall fell prepared her for a future as a politician. But it also created some blind spots in her governing; allowing the far right movement, centered in former East Germany, to gain a foothold in the German Parliament.
In the coming months, Germany will have a new chancellor for the first time in 16 years. Following the country's recent elections, Angela Merkel, one of the world's longest serving democratically elected leaders, will step down. As she leaves behind a legacy of decisive action and an unrelenting moral compass, Merkel's retirement comes at a time when there is a great deal of uncertainty in the world, which stands in stark contrast to the guiding pillar of stability she has been for her countrymen over the past two decades. In The Chancellor, biographer Kati Marton takes an in-depth look into Merkel's success as a leader, uncovering the secrets of her political and diplomatic success, as well as the unique personal background that helped shape her into the strong, yet humble, leader she is known for being today. Kati Marton is an author and award-winning former correspondent for NPR and ABC News. She became a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist following her book, Enemies of the People: My Family's Journey to America. Marton has also written books on other topics of international affairs, such as True Believer: Stalin's American Spy, The Great Escape: Nine Jews Who Fled Hitler and Changed the World; The Polk Conspiracy, and A Death in Jerusalem. As part of a special symposium on the past and present of Christian democracy held on September 24, 2021, just ahead of this year's German elections, the Review of Democracy has interviewed Kati Marton about her forthcoming book The Chancellor. The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel (Simon & Schuster, 2021). This new book, which will appear in fifteen languages in the near future, draws on years of research and direct access to key individuals to paint a human portrait of the first female chancellor of the Federal Republic. The conversation conducted by Ferenc Laczó focuses on Kati Marton's motivation to paint a human portrait of Angela Merkel who has been known to be rather fiercely protective about her privacy; on Merkel's personality traits and how they have impacted the style and substance of her political leadership; the tensions between Merkel's commitment to liberal and democratic values and the demands of Realpolitik that have defined her sixteen years in office; die Kanzlerin's signature achievements, notable failures and her legacy; and how her time in charge of Germany has transformed our image of a competent and effective political leader, not least in gender terms.
Would China and the U.S. go to war over Taiwan? Fareed talks to Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Oriana Skylar Mastro of The American Enterprise Institute about the complex relationship the U.S. must navigate between China and Taiwan. Haass also reflects on the complicated legacy of his former boss at the State Department, the late Gen. Colin Powell. Then, David Sanger, national security correspondent for the New York Times, explains why China's hypersonic missile testing is a significant step towards a potential twenty-first century arms race. As Germany bids auf wiedersehen to long-time Chancellor Angela Merkel, Kati Marton, journalist and author of the new book “The Chancellor,” tells Fareed about the qualities that made Merkel such a powerful chancellor and the legacy she leaves behind. Plus, Fareed checks in with Mahbouba Seraj, the founder of the Afghan Women's Network. Seraj is still in Kabul and tells Fareed what life in the nation is like, 10 weeks after the Taliban took over. Lastly, Fareed looks at what some are calling “Striketober” — the rash of strikes and other labor problems around America - and why it actually might be a net positive for labor, business, and the American economy. In just a few days, German voters will decide who will lead the EU's most powerful economy. With this watershed Bundestag election, Angela Merkel's 16 years at the chancellery will come to an end. Her story is nothing but extraordinary. Trained as a research chemist in the country's formerly communist East, Merkel became Germany's first female chancellor and then rose to Europe's undisputed leader. How have Germany, the EU and, in fact, the Western alliance changed during the era of her chancellorship? And as Merkel is about to hand over to a yet-to-be-determined successor and a new government, where is the country going domestically, in Europe and as a global power? Award-winning journalist and Merkel biographer Kati Marton and Teneo Managing Director and German political affairs expert Carsten Nickel join Kevin Kajiwara, Co-President of Political Risk Advisory, for an engaging discussion on the rise, rule and legacy of Angela Merkel -- and what lies ahead for Germany, Europe and the West in the wake of her departure.
Marcia Franklin talks with author and former journalist Kati Marton. She describes the experience of researching her book Enemies of the People, which chronicles her effort to learn more about her parents. They were imprisoned by the Hungarian government during the Cold War for their work as reporters for American news outlets. Released after nearly two years, her parents fled to the United States, where they lived out their lives and never discussed their ordeal. Years after their deaths, Marton had the unique opportunity to look at the once-secret files compiled on her family. She discovered not only who had betrayed her parents, but more about their past lives than she had ever imagined. Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) is best known as the author of Night, survivor of Auschwitz and a powerful, enduring voice of the Holocaust. A recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, he was a hero of human rights, professor and author of more than 50 books. Among his accomplishments, Wiesel co-founded Moment Magazine with Leonard Fein in 1975 to be a place of conversation for America’s Jews. For editor-in-chief Nadine Epstein, he became a mentor and friend after she took over the magazine in 2004. In this striking volume (https://www.amazon.com/Elie-Wiesel-Extraordinary-Life-Legacy/dp/1942134576/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3L2E7TU5HPM9H&keywords=elie+wiesel+an+extraordinary+life+and+legacy&qid=1561563097&s=gateway&sprefix=extraordinary+elie%2Caps%2C142&sr=8-1), Epstein shares her memories of Wiesel and brings together 36 interviews with friends, colleagues and others who knew him – including, his son Elisha, Michael Berenbaum, Wolf Blitzer, Father Patrick Debois, Ronald S. Lauder, Bernard Henri-Levi, Kati Marton, Natan Sharansky, Ben Kingsley, and Oprah Winfrey. The foreword is by British Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and the afterword is by broadcaster Ted Koppel. To celebrate this humanitarian and keep his inspiration alive, Epstein presents readers with a visual history of Wiesel’s life and examines the influence of Night. This chilling story of the Holocaust has already gripped the souls of millions of readers. Epstein includes a selection of his speeches and writings, lively conversations with teenagers about Night and discussion questions. The book features more than 100 photos. Says Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: "This book of reflections is a fitting tribute to the legacy of Elie Wiesel. In its pages and through the words of its contributors, you will feel a promise, not just to the souls who perished, but also to Elie and all those who survived Europe’s darkest night." Special Guest: Nadine Epstein.

Hours before President Trump attends a NATO Summit in Brussels, we examine the role of the alliance and how it fits into Europe’s recent struggles. Brexit, terrorism, a new anti-establishment government in Italy, and rising nationalism fueled in part by a flood of immigrants from the Syrian war are testing the grand European experiment. How should the continent move forward? And how will the region handle Trump’s anti-European and anti-NATO rhetoric? The Aspen Institute’s Elliot Gerson leads a conversation with Kati Marton, journalist and human rights advocate; Douglas Lute, former US ambassador to NATO; and Mircea Dan Geoana, former president of the Romanian Senate and founder of Aspen Romania. Kati Marton, a veteran reporter and author now with the Committee to Protect Journalists, talks to host Ryan Heath about how the reelection of Victor Orbán in Hungary will impact media freedom in Europe. Jan Philipp Albrecht, also known as Mr. Data Protection for his role in the GDPR legislation being enacted in May, chats to Ryan about his work in Parliament. Albrecht also tells us about the dream job he is set to begin soon. The Brussels brains trust, Ailbhe Finn and Lina Aburous, is shell-shocked by a story of sexual harassment in the most unexpected EU institution. They also tackle comments by the U.K.'s Brexit minister David Davis.
What does it take for someone with seemingly every advantage in life to turn on their friends, their family and their country, all in the name of a cause? Today's guest, Kati Marton, explores that question in her new book, True Believer: Stalin's Last American Spy.
At a time when Russia is alleged to have manipulated the recent US Presidential elections, Kati Marton returned to the American Academy to present her latest book, True Believer (Simon & Schuster, 2016), which reveals the life of Noel Field, an Ivy League-educated State Department employee, who was deeply rooted in the culture and history of the United States yet spied for Joseph Stalin. With a reporter’s eye for detail and a historian’s grasp of the cataclysmic events of the twentieth century, Marton captures Field’s riveting quest for a life of meaning that went horribly wrong. Host: R. Jay Magill
Listening to our political discourse today, vis a vis Russia, it brings back powerful reminders of the Cold War. A time when spies and covert action existed in what Le Carre called “a moral twilight.” And yet when we think about people like Kim Philby or Alger Hiss or Aldrich Ames, is the way that they turned on their country any different than what we are seeing today? We look at one of these instructive Cold War stories, True Believer: Stalin's Last American Spywith best selling author, and award winning journalist Kati Marton. My conversation with Kati Marton:
Council President and CEO Jim Falk spoke with best-selling author, Kati Marton to discuss her newest book, "True Believer: Stalin's Last American Spy", about the life of Noel Fielding, one of Stalin's most faithful American spies.
At a live event at the International Spy Museum, SPY Historian Vince Houghton sat down with journalist Kati Marton to discuss Soviet spy Noel Field, the subject of Marton’s new book True Believer: Stalin’s Last American Spy.
We live in an ever-shifting world, where industries are rushing to meet modern expectations and the demands placed upon the global workforce are changing daily. In this week's podcast, former Indiana governor and current president of Purdue University Mitch Daniels speaks about the changing role of education and how schools like Purdue, formally an agriculturally-focused institution, are adapting to meet contemporary innovation. Later, International Security Program Director Peter Bergen engages with Raza Rumi, an analyst for Express News and the consulting editor of the Friday Times, in addition to Kati Marton (a New America board member) and Joel Simon of the Committee to Protect Journalists. The group discusses the recent assassination attempt on Rumi, as well as the growing dangers facing journalists working in Pakistan and the fine line they tread.
