Bestselling author Elle Cosimano (of the famed Finlay Donovan series) was miserable in her job working in real estate. Then her mother offered to care for her children for the summer and take on the physical and mental load of parenting so that Elle could try to write her own book. That moment of receiving permission to do something for herself, completely changed Elle's life and put her on the path to writing her first book, to finding an agent, to publishing a book and then many books and then hitting the bestseller lists. And along the way Elle connected with other women who were also blowing up their lives to switch careers to become authors. Those women inspired her every single day to keep going. This is about women lifting each other up and supporting one another unconditionally. It is about the fear and shame and guilt many of us have about doing something that seems selfish, that is for ourselves.Elle Cosimano has inspired me so much on my own journey and I know that she is going to inspire you.VISIT OUR SPONSORS:Treat yourself to the best bras on the market and save 20% Off at honeylove.com/influence. On our latest weekly roundup, some of our kids are moving back and forth from college, and one is moving down to the basement apartment... little by little. What we're watching: On The Gilded Age, there were many winners and a few losers in the season 2 finale, "In Terms of Winning and Losing." While we're sad that the show has not (as yet) been renewed for season 3, we also kind of wouldn't mind letting these characters stay where they landed in this episode. We also watched the movie Quiz Lady, which you can find on Hulu. It stars Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as a pair of sisters, but the twist is that Sandra Oh is the screw-up and Awkwafina is the straitlaced one. The movie also has enough fun little twists (plus dogs!) to make it a lot of fun.Catherine's library find this week is Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano. It's the first in a series about a mom and suspense novelist who gets mixed up in some real-life crime, with her trusty babysitter as her sidekick. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed parenting trends to take or leave (December 21, 2021), parenting trends of the decade (December 18, 2019), crazy jobs and crazier elves (December 18, 2015), and our very first episode: Holiday Parenting Joys and Jangles (December 18, 2013; be warned that the production quality is best described as "primitive").We're taking the next two weeks off for the holidays (we think we've earned it, after 10 years!). We'll be back in January. Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available. From the author of Finlay Donovan Is Killing It and Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead, the third book in a hilarious murder mystery series with a completely lovable heroine - perfect for fans of Abbi Waxman and Maria Semple. New year, new Finlay Donovan. She's got a list of resolutions and she's ready to bite the bullet. No junk food. No men. No bodies in her minivan. But first, she owes the Russian mob one last favour - tracking down a rogue hitman with her nanny Vero, before the cops do. The small complication? This killer might be cop himself. Enter distractingly hot Detective Nicholas Anthony, whose new citizens' police academy provides the perfect cover-up for Finlay to sleuth out the target - and some fresh ideas for her crime novel. Between firearms and forensics training, family dramas and hands-on research with Detective Nick, can Finlay get to her edits and the hitman before time runs out? She'll give it her best shot. With more dating, diapers and dodging bullets, the third book in the hilarious irresistibly lovable Finlay Donovan series is perfect for fans of Dial A for Aunties, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, and Netflix's Dead to Me.
A new Finlay Donovan! And mostly a bunch of juicy thrillers. All of the books being published in January, February, and March! ❤️
When a misunderstanding at a Panera results in an offer that's impossible to refuse, Elle Cosimano's title character springs to life for readers who can't help but root for her heroine to find love, money, and kick a lot of butt along the way. Elle returns to the podcast to talk to Olivia about the third book in her series, FINLAY DONOVAN JUMPS THE GUN. This time we see Finlay and her bestie/nanny/accountant, Vero, head off to a citizen's police academy that puts her right in the focus of the police, for better or worse. The author says the situation was inspired by a real-life writer's academy she took part in, which provides a safe space to ask questions that might otherwise make you look like an aspiring serial killer. “My google search probably has me on several very scary watchlists… but the writer's police academy was great for those questions that would be frowned upon for asking anywhere else!” FINLAY DONOVAN JUMPS THE GUN is available from Minotaur Books on January 31, 2023, and as an audiobook from Macmillan Audio. For more on the author, visit www.ellecosimano.com

Grab your favorite soup or sandwich from Panera and settle in for a chat with Elle Cosimano – don't worry, no spoilers! The beloved Finlay is back and smack dab in the middle of yet another wonderful mess in Elle Cosimano's February 1st release, “Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead,” the follow up to her hit, “Finlay Donovan Is Killing It.” In this story Finlay and Vero must sort out who is after her ex-husband Steven, and what they can do to protect him, or if they want to. Throw in plenty of secrets, lies, disguises and love triangles and the book is a non-stop mystery full of laughter, friendship, and an adorably relatable heroine. Elle joined the podcast to talk to Olivia about the series, crafting the friendship between Finlay and Vero, and how many more stories are already in the works (more than listeners may expect!) She shares advice on writing, and her delight over the love her book covers have received on Instagram. “Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead” is published by Minotaur Books. “Finlay Donovan Is Killing It” is now available in paperback. In A Moment With Margaret, Margaret and Olivia discuss some of the reading challenges and book club selections that are out there for the start of the year, and Margaret discusses her current reads and TBR. From the author of Finlay Donovan Is Killing It comes the heart-pounding sequel Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead, a hilarious murder mystery perfect for fans of Abbi Waxman and Maria Semple. Finlay Donovan - single mum, floundering crime writer and accidental hit-woman - is, once again, struggling to finish her crime novel. Ever since someone misinterpreted her talking about her new book, she has been busier than ever working as a hit-woman and taking on the life she usually reserves for her characters. On the bright side, the only dead body she's dealt with lately is that of her daughter's pet goldfish. On the not-so-bright side, someone wants her ex-husband dead. And saving him is going to send her down a rabbit hole of soccer moms disguised as hit-women, with a little more involvement with the Russian mob than she'd like. With her book deadline looming, and an ex-husband to keep alive, Finlay is quickly coming to the end of her rope. She can only hope there isn't a noose at the end of it.... Finlay Donovan really is killing it....
Elle Cosimano is the Edgar-nominated and award-winning author of the acclaimed young adult novels Nearly Gone, Holding Smoke, The Suffering Tree, and Seasons of the Storm. Her debut novel for adults, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It, kicked off a witty, fast-paced contemporary mystery series, which was featured as a People Magazine Pick and one of New York Public Library's Best Books of 2021. In addition to writing novels for teens and adults, her essays have appeared in The Huffington Post and Time. Cosimano lives with her husband and two sons in Virginia.Intro roll for WTPC

Sorry that the July wrap-up pod is actually coming out in August but it's the Olympics. Sorry not sorry! There was only one new Hallmark movie this month during Christmas In July, Crashing Through The Snow. I made it through six books before the games came on and my life was consumed with sports so let's get into them! Book club pick And Now You're Back by Jill Mansell wasn't my favorite of hers but I still liked it. Beth O'Leary had another hit in The Switch. Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano really did kill it: get that book! How no one told me to read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne is beyond me, but it and The Wall of Winnipeg and Me by Mariana Zapata from 2016 were both good reads. And then there was How To Love Your Neighbor by Sophie Sullivan. You can't read it until next January so major thank yous to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the advance copy, but put it on your Christmas list! You won't want to miss that. Want links to these books? Head over to sockbunstudios.com and check the blog for them! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Discussing a wonderful listener's emailed hot take about I Care A Lot (2021), in which Renaissance defends their love for morally reprehensible women in fictional media and Sunny recommend Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Ellie Cosimano as an alternative piece of media to I Care A Lot (2021) that is intentionally camp and funny thriller about a morally gray woman that is actually written by a woman and not a corny man with even cornier politics. Then we discuss Taylor Swift's latest song, which is a feature. on Big Red Machine's single 'Renegade.' We are both obsessed with it, of course. Finally, Renaissance recommends a throwback classic movie- The Devil Wears Prada (2006) and Sunny recommends the sci-fi fantasy novella Yellow Jessamine by Caitlin Starling.Follow us on Twitter @thelavenderpod and send your hot takes to thelavendermenancepodcast@gmail.com!

When struggling crime writer Finlay Donovan takes on a life of crime normally reserved for her characters, she finds herself entangled in a real-life murder investigation. Witty and fast-paced, this murder mystery is perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich and Maria Semple. 'Proves you only need to get mistaken once for a contract killer to solve all your problems' LISA GARDNER Finlay Donovan, single mum and floundering crime writer, is having a hard time. Her ex-husband went behind her back to fire the nanny, and this morning she sent her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an unfortunate incident with scissors. Making it to lunch with her literary agent is a minor victory but, as she's discussing the plot of her latest crime novel, the conversation is misinterpreted by a woman sitting nearby as that of a hit-woman offering her services to dispose of a 'problem' husband. And when the woman slips Finlay a name and a promise of a large sum of cash, Finlay finds herself plotting something much bigger than her novel. And, after all, they do always say: write what you know. . .
