Yangsta is a hip-hop artist and radio/podcast personality from Dartmouth Nova Scotia. He is an avid supporter of the local NS hip-hop scene and has been releasing music for over a decade. Yangsta's musical style is inspired by the likes of Will Smith, 2Pac, Jay-Z, Notorious BIG and other notable figures of old school 90s rap era. A lyrical perfectionist, Yangsta prefers to write bars on a pen and a pad vs. freestyling songs. The polished and to-the-point song structure in all of his music serves as a testament to his effort towards creating the best music. Yangsta co-hosted a popular radio show on 88.1fm CKDU called “Pyrate Radio”, a one-hour-long local hip hop show alongside Vadell Gabriel. Over the eight years of the show being active, the duo brought on countless guests from the local music community to showcase their content and talents, including the Blackout Podcast's host. Yangsta & Vadell also performed and DJ'd at various venues across the city such as the Gottingen 250 festival, “Family Over Fame” day, The Coast's “Food Truck party” and “Multi-cultural night” at MSVU. Yangsta's latest project “Tales From the Dark Side” #TFDS is a testament to his lyricism and life experiences as a resident of Dartmouth. The gritty yet energetic sounds of the project is an accurate reflection of life in the Dark Side and the unique vibe the city has. A must listen. Check him out @theyangsta7
You likely know Dan Misener for his work in Podcasting - but I managed to trace his roots back to radio. Specifically, to CBC and shows like DNTO (Definitely Not the Opera) and Spark with Nora Young. His radio days actually stretch back a little further than that to campus radio at Dalhousie's CKDU in Halifax. But it was his time at Pacific Content where Dan began to explore audience development in the podcast space. Yes, he could have continued on making great sounding shows at places like the CBC, but what's the point if you aren't getting everyone to listen, right? In this episode we will discuss those early radio days and the natural transition to podcasting, the experimenting at the CBC with Spark, and the creation of a feedback loop for the show. We also spoke about the importance of the packaging of your podcast and how it appears in podcast catalogues and on a dashboard display in a vehicle. We also talked about some of the cool blogs that Dan has written, the very helpful Podcast XRay that was released earlier this year which helps you find out things about show's like release days, enclosure tags and the brand new analytics Dashboard from Bumper presents another look at podcast metrics focusing in consumption and verified listens to a show. Yes downloads are cool but have you ever appreciated the Time Spent Listening (TSL) to your show?Dan has given us a look into new Bumper Dashboard for their clients and we make a few observations about the Sound Off Podcast. Some we knew; some we did not.We also touched on some other lingering podcast questions like, does it matter what day of the week you release an episode, and what's the role in video for your show. The answer to both is... YES!I did not ask Dan about his feelings about Rogers (mis)handling the attempted shuttling of Pacific Content, nor the ensuing sale to Lower Street... there were podcast marketing strategies to pursue after all.A Transcript and video version of the episode is available on the network page. Agricultural workers provide the food we eat but often face a unique combination of occupational health concerns including increasing incidence of unexplained chronic kidney disease, or chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu).With evidence from a recent Ag Health Study (AHS) in the U.S. directly linking kidney disease to pesticide exposure along with further concern that heat stress may exacerbate the effects of pesticide exposure on kidneys, the study of chronic kidney disease in farmworkers is emerging as a high priority. In this episode, hear from Dr. Chris Vulpe, professor and molecular toxicologist in the Center for Environmental and Human Toxicology at the University of Florida. Dr. Vulpe discusses the interaction between heat stress and pesticide exposure which can lead to kidney damage, and just why this disease has been considered a ‘medical mystery.' Dana Beeler leads the rock band Hello Delaware, has her hands in all facets of the music industry—just last week she returned to Music Nova Scotia after a year at CKDU—and hates the patriarchy. She and Tara are from the same town (Lantz, it's the worst) so after some rage-tinged nostalgia about adolescence they'll get into post-pandemic perspectives about music, old attitudes—that would be the many all-male music festivals on the docket this summer—and what Nova Scotia Music Week could look like in November.

In this week's episode, Stephen and Carsten a look at indigenous filmmaking in Canada and beyond, starting with Mi'kmaw director Jeff Barnaby from just over the New Brunswick/Quebec border in Listuguj First Nation, with his recent apocalyptic zombie hit Blood Quantum and its kinda-prequel Rhymes for Young Ghouls, and moving to the Arctic, the U.S., Scandinavia, New Zealand and Australia. Each film tells a different story, but unsurprisingly the theme of the harm done by settler culture imposing its will on Indigenous communities is universal and a consistent thread through most of these films. The newspaper industry in Atlantic Canada is far less than healthy. The largest-circulation paper, the Halifax Chronicle Herald, is more than 400 days into a crippling strike which sees most of its senior reporters and editors on the picket line while its replacement workers are plugging out disturbingly sub-par journalism. Elsewhere in the area, the rest of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador have almost almost all of their daily and weekly newspapers cinched up between two companies: Brunswick News (owned by the Irving family, who employs approximately one-in-five New Brunswickers), and TC Media. Still, there are bright spots. Atlantic Canada is seeing a significant number of start-up journalism enterprises. Might there be a light at the end of the tunnel? Jack finally finds David in CKDU in time for the last of the InFRINGEment shorts with "Housbroken" before the reunited co-hosts are whisked off to Audio Epics' "The Will of the Woods" by Domien deGroot and Eline Hoskins!
Jack is getting drawn back to CKDU for some reason with two episodes from this year's INFRINGEment Festival "The Stand of a Tribute Band" and EVP's "Duel" but not before the main feature of Middlebury Radio Theater's "Rossum's Universal Robots". Where is David?
David is stuck in a cold cave with a blizzard roaring through the mountains, as he thinks warmly about Harry Strange and some more CKDU's King's College Infringement Festival including with a new version from Electric Vicuna Productions of an old favourite "Night Driving" starring Colleen MacIssac, Sonja Gould, and Dorian Lang. M. Sieiro Garcia continues as Bumper Girl.
This week we take a look back at the earliest (and only) Shadowlands Troop live show. a tribute comedy written by Jack J. Ward called "Hill Manors". Even though this show was done live, the recording was so g-d awful that we ended up recording it quickly at CKDU studios for this version.Enjoy!
