BrownTown chops it up about WORK. Building on previous episodes about labor, unions, and trying to do liberatory work within capitalism, BrownTown contextualizes recent inflation hikes, the state of "hustle culture," and the seven-decade growth of corporate profits on the backs of the working class. While the majority of adults WORK, the propaganda that you must "earn" the right to live and be productive constantly in order to have any value has normalized harmful policies, language, and attitudes towards one another. Though COVID, the great resignation, Striketober, and other large phenomena have chipped the armor of capitalist logics and apparatuses, how do we better utilize that energy to sustain better material conditions forever and for always? The Great Resignation, also known as the Big Quit, is an economic trend in which employees voluntarily resign from their jobs en masse, beginning in early 2021, primarily in the United States. It has been said the trend is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American government refusing to provide necessary worker protections, and wage stagnation despite a rising cost of living. Some economists have described the Great Resignation as a kind of general strike while discussing Striketober, a wave of strikes in October 2021.Sign up for a free 30-day trial of the SNS Global Report - The world's most reliable source of advanced information at the intersection of technology and the economy for 25 years. https://www.stratnews.com/subscribe/

Thank you all for listening to and supporting our work over the past year.  We're getting some much-needed rest and gearing up for Season Five. In the meantime, we're ringing in the new year by unlocking this special bonus episode—enjoy! And happy 2022! All power to the workers! 2021 was an energizing year for a labor movement that has had its back against the wall for a long time. From record numbers of American workers voluntarily quitting their jobs to publicly supported strikes and unionization drives in different sectors of the economy, more and more working people are taking action and standing up for themselves. But this is just the beginning—there's still a lot of work to do, and 2022 will provide a crucial test for the labor movement and its supporters. In this special panel episode of Working People, originally published in November as a bonus episode for patrons, we talk to three full-time union organizers—Puja Datta (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees), Margaret McLaughlin (United University Professions), and Diana Hussein (UNITE HERE)—about what Striketober and 2021 in general have meant for the labor movement. We also talk about the day-to-day work of being a union organizer, where the labor movement goes from here, and what you can do to build working-class power. Additional links/info below... In Part 1, we covered the January 6th fascist attack on the U.S. Capital, the first year of the Biden administration, the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, ongoing cases of police terror and murder, including here in DC. And, finally, we began our discussion of international news with our geopolitical analyst professor Gerald Horne breaking down the latest on the triangular relationship BETWEEN the United States, Russia and China. In Part 2, we pick up that discussion, starting with the victory of Gabriel Boric and progressive forces in Chile over a far-right follower of the former U.S. backed dictator Augusto Pinochet. Also, labor victories and struggles, and the fight for Voting Rights and other basics of American democracy.   The show is made possible only by our volunteer energy, our resolve to keep the people's voices on the air, and by support from our listeners. For the last episode of Work Stoppage of 2021, we decided to take a look back at the stories and trends that we covered in the labor movement this year. We discuss the first major efforts at unionizing Amazon [7:00-24:11], the ways in which OSHA let workers down [24:12-35:19], and the many companies that put forward a "progressive" image only to use the same union busting tactics of every other company [35:20-51:35]. We also talk about the unfortunately large number of stories we covered this year on modern slavery [51:36-1:02:49], the year long struggle and triumph of the Indian Farmers Movement [1:02:50-1:15:51], and finally the fall upsurge in the labor movement here in the US during "Striketober" [1:15:52-1:25:30]. We try and draw what lessons we can take from these major trends labor took in 2021, and look ahead to what might be in store for 2022. Labor historian Gabriel Winant spoke about “Putting the current labor upheaval in historical context” at a December 10 labor history discussion hosted by the East Side Freedom Library in St Paul, Minnesota. Winant is the author of The Next Shift: The Fall of Manufacturing and the Rise of Health Care in Rust Belt America and his latest essay, Strike Wave, was published in the British journal New Left Review in late November. Winant's historical perspective seems especially useful as we look ahead to a new year and a rejuvenated labor movement, and we've included an inspiring report on local organizing in St Paul bookstores: these are the sparks that are firing the tinder of worker discontent across the country. On this week's Labor History in Two: the year was 1945. That was the day workers ended their ninety-nine-day strike against the Ford Motor Company in Windsor, Ontario. Questions, comments or suggestions welcome, and to find out how you can be a part of Labor History Today, email us at LaborHistoryToday@gmail.com Labor History Today is produced by Union City Radio and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor. Being on so many more stations will greatly increase our operating costs.  We are very excited to get back on the radio – we hope y'all are too.  Solidarity forever. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Television and video productions create the stories that we all love, from Hollywood blockbusters to runaway cult classic television shows.  The wave of strikes and strike authorizations now known as Striketober was significantly propelled this month by IATSE members across the country and in Oregon demanding several on and off-set basics: Fair wages and rest breaks to name a few.  While their contract was settled with a recent tentative agreement at the bargaining table, Striketober continues. We're seeing workers stand up and fight for fair contracts across the county, and basic workplace safety is critical for a fair contract. Tragically, the need for ever present safety on film productions was demonstrated by the tragic on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins last week.  As we know, when experts are hired and workers have a voice on the job, workplace safety improves and that idea has become part of the national dialogue in the past week. Joining our podcast this month to discuss Striketober, workplace safety and what it means to work on films as a union studio mechanic is cdavid cotrill, Southern Business Agent for IATSE Local 488. Hosted by  Oregon AFL-CIO Communications Director Russell SandersIntroduction by Oregon AFL-CIO President Graham Trainor

Fareed talks to Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, and Oriana Skylar Mastro of The American Enterprise Institute about the complex relationship the U.S. must navigate between China and Taiwan. Haass also reflects on the complicated legacy of his former boss at the State Department, the late Gen. Colin Powell. Then, David Sanger, national security correspondent for the New York Times, explains why China's hypersonic missile testing is a significant step towards a potential twenty-first century arms race. As Germany bids auf wiedersehen to long-time Chancellor Angela Merkel, Kati Marton, journalist and author of the new book “The Chancellor,” tells Fareed about the qualities that made Merkel such a powerful chancellor and the legacy she leaves behind. Plus, Fareed checks in with Mahbouba Seraj, the founder of the Afghan Women's Network. Seraj is still in Kabul and tells Fareed what life in the nation is like, 10 weeks after the Taliban took over. Lastly, Fareed looks at what some are calling “Striketober” — the rash of strikes and other labor problems around America - and why it actually might be a net positive for labor, business, and the American economy. At this very moment, 10,000 UAW members at John Deere are on strike in Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas; 35,000 healthcare workers at Kaiser Permanente have authorized a strike; 1,400 workers at cereal giant Kellogg's are on strike in Nebraska, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee; 1,100 coal miners in Alabama have been on strike since April; 800 nurses in Massachusetts have been on strike since March; and many other strikes and strike authorizations are also unfolding. On top of that, record numbers of US workers are voluntarily quitting their jobs, in what is being called the “Great Resignation.” Something is happening here. How should we understand this pivotal moment of labor strife? And what could this moment become if the working class gets more organized and more militant? In this segment of The Marc Steiner Show, Marc talks about Striketober, the “Great Resignation,” labor militancy, and the importance of bottom-up organizing with longtime labor organizer Alex Han. Han is a former union leader who has spent 20 years organizing in the labor movement; he is the Bargaining for the Common Good Fellow at the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University. On today's LIVE episode, we discussed worker strikes across the US and the economic impact. Is this good for workers, good for the economy or not? Then we cover former fed chair Alan Greenspan and statements attributed to him on job insecurity and inflation. Was Greenspan right? What happens to labor when they exercise power and why host Eric Darnley Small (@ericdsmall) believes labor is the key to winning in 2022 and 2024. Then, Theranos trial continues tomorrow. We do a deep dive and analysis on the case. Was Elizabeth Holmes a scam artist or was she "faking it till she made it"? Finally, the Ahmed Arbury trial begins. What happened in Georgia and what is the case against the three men involved?

Tens of thousands of workers have either gone on strike or are about to across a wide swath on industries, exasperating the massive inflation and shortages problems we already have. In some cases the workers have a valid point. In others they are probably asking for too much. In either case damage is being done at a time when we cannot afford it, and the likes of AOC and others have gotten #striketober to trend, making matters worse. Walls are up and the divide is great in many of these disputes. We dig into four specific situations with John Deere, Kelloggs, IATSE, and Kaiser Permanente, calling balls and strikes as we see them. In every case, one side (or both) doesn't understand math very well. We grapple with this messy subject in this Sunday Discussion episode of The Soule of Wisdom.
