There's nothing like a little light-hearted solicitation to relive your lost youth and discover how amazing sex could be since your, now deceased, boring husband "missionary Martin" never gave it propa'. So, in walks gigolo Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) to guide Nancy (Emma Thompson) in her search for the ever-elusive big "O". Just chuck some fit bloke some cash and it'll solve all your problems basically. Some procrastination here, some procrastination there, and that's what Emma Thompson as Nancy does in the sex comedy drama ("sexadramady"?) penned by Katy Brand and directed by Sophie Hyde. It's a weird one. At the heart of the film is a sex-positive message that has some genuinely touching moments from the inimitable Ms. Thompson. But when you come down to it, it misses the mark in giving Mr. McCormack enough meat to play with. You'll get what we mean when you give it a listen. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE is currently streaming on HULU in the US.
With us this episode are filmmaker Janis Pugh & actor, director & writer Tilda Cobham-Hervey - just two of the brilliant women showcased at the Edinburgh Festivals 2023. Anna Smith also gives top tips of other female-led highlights of the Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh International Book Festival, and - of course - Edinburgh International Film Festival. Our first guest is Janis Pugh, writer/director of Chuck Chuck Baby which will receive its World Premiere at Edinburgh International Film Festival on 20th August. The feature is a musical comedy drama that celebrates female working class friendship and love in Wales. Helen, played by Louise Brealey (Sherlock, Smack the Pony) is stuck packing chickens by night and by day cares for a dying mother figure. Her life takes an unexpected turn with the return of Joanne, played by Annabel Scholey (Being Human, Walking on Sunshine). Janis Pugh joins Anna for a lively chat about her personal experiences of working in a chicken factory in Wales, and talks about the camaraderie she saw that inspired the film. She also explains why love is at the heart of the film, and talks about the fragile male character of Gary, played by Celyn Jones. We also chat with actor, director & writer Tilda Cobham-Hervey who, as well as working in film and TV, also works in live art and is bringing her intimate audio adventure Two Strangers Walk Into A Bar… to the Fringe. Tilda chats about her journey to making the production, and her love of immersive live experience, as well as the effects that the piece has on the two-strong audience. Anna Smith will be sharing her reaction to the piece as she updates live from the festivals, so stay tuned on the socials below. Sophie Hyde je austrálska režisérka, producentka, scenáristka a zakladajúca členka Closer Productions. Jej najnovší film Good Luck to You Leo Grande, ktorého scenár napísala Katy Brand, s Emmou Thompson a Darylom McCormackom v hlavných úlohách, rozpráva príbeh mladého (a mimochodom veľmi dobre vyzerajúceho) sexuálneho pracovníka Lea Grandeho a ovdovenej učiteľky na dôchodku, upätej päťdesiatničky Nancy Stokes. Film som videla trikrát a zakaždým som s hlbokým úžasom sledovala premenu oboch postáv, ich zraniteľnosť a krehké, no krásne ľudské spojenie, ktoré dokázal sprostredkovať. WARNING: In this episode, I repeatedly mispronounce Leo Grande. Sophie was really nice so she never corrected me and I didn't realise till I uploaded. It's not easy being this dumb but somehow I stumble through life. Sophie Hyde is a super talented Australian director from Adelaide whose first fiction feature, 52 Tuesdays, won directing awards at both Berlin and Sundance. Since then she's been making a bunch of phenomenal work in features, doco and TV, most recently the film Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, starring Emma Thompson. We chatted about everything from her background in documentary, shooting 52 Tuesdays over 52 weeks, her collaboration with Irish sound editor Steve Fanagan, rehearsing over Zoom and the challenges of shooting a film in one location. Good Luck To You is currently screening in theatres across Australia (maybe still in the US and UK?) Either way watch it it's so good!
In today's episode we're discussing Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, now streaming on Hulu. Directed by Sophie Hyde and written by Katy Brand, the story follows an older woman, Nancy (Emma Thompson), who hires a young male sex worker, Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack), with the hope of finally exploring all the desires she was never allowed to act on with her late husband -- her one and only sexual partner. ** After we discuss how Kate worries that she could become Nancy and Carinn declares she is Leo, we deep dive into our favorite scenes. These scenes evoke the idea of women taking what they want, mommy issues, letting go, acceptance of one's body and the power of releasing self-judgment. There is also a lot of discussion of all the surprising times we each cried while watching! (11:57) *What She Said, Sophie Hyde and Katy Brand. We share our favorite first person quotes of the talented director and writer of this sex-positive and positively sexy movie! (64:33) ** Who Won and Takeaways. We discuss the power of Daryl McCormack's eyes (aka Leo Grande) and the power of pleasure, intimacy and vulnerability. (71:58)
I recorded this less than five minutes after learning the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. What follows are the earliest thoughts, blended in with the themes I admire from Sophie Hyde's new comedy, "Good Luck to You, Leo Grande." The plot follows Nancy (Emma Thompson), a recently widowed and retired schoolteacher who books sex worker Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) for a session. Through her interactions with Leo, Nancy explores her sexual repression, shame, self-judgment and mental roadblocks regarding having a satisfying sexual experience. I can't help but think the psychology behind how we approach, discuss and respond to our sexual expression serves as a good starting point to how we then regard our bodily autonomy and reproductive rights. All of this from a straight cis man. Christ. Sorry for when I (inevitably) fuck this up, but this podcast is partially a diary for me, so here we go. | Follow me on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod
Q&A on the Searchlight film Good Luck to You, Leo Grande with writer Katy Brand and immediately after a Q&A with director Sophie Hyde. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Nancy Stokes, a 55-year-old widow, is yearning for some adventure, human connection, and some sex--some good sex.
On this episode, I spoke to director Sophie Hyde about Good Luck to You, Leo Grande. The film stars Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack.
Emma Thompson is a lonely, unfulfilled woman, and Daryl McCormack is a sex work she hires for several assignations in a hotel room. And there we have Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, and so much more. Ashley & Matt review this new movie, available to watch on Hulu.

Good Luck To You, Leo Grande is a fantastic new British movie that sees Dame Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack spend a lot of time together in a hotel room. So that's exactly what we made them do again this week, with Ella Kemp (making her Empire Podcast debut) talking to the stars of Sophie Hyde's movie about an ageing woman who, having had very few positive sexual experiences, hires a sex worker (McCormack), and complications ensue. The film is frank, funny, and insightful, and their chat with Ella is similarly so, featuring Dame Emma's reminiscences about The Tall Guy, and one of the best answers we've ever had on the podcast. Hint: it features an Oscar. Then, in the podbooth this week, Chris Hewitt is joined by James Dyer and, for the first time in ages, Helen O'Hara, and truth be told, being reunited makes them go a little doolally. So, in-between answering a listener question about the film sets they've accidentally stumbled upon in a non-professional capacity, they talk about Helen's Wikipedia page, and Chris and Helen educate James about the history of the Giant's Causeway. They also discuss actual films at some point, including the week's movie news, including Lady Gaga possibly joining Joker 2 (which may be a musical???), the announcement of the Paddington 3 director, and their feelings about the official title of Knives Out 2: Benoit Boogaloo. In the reviews section, they run their eye over Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Spiderhead, Everything Went Fine, and Last Seen Alive, and Sophie Butcher goes to infinity and beyond to help everyone get to grips with Pixar's Lightyear. Enjoy. TIMESTAMPS! (timings are approx.) Intro/Listener Q/Nonsense: 0:00.00 - 19:56.00 Movie News: 19:57.00 - 43:08.00 Emma Thompson/Daryl McCormack: 43:09.00 - 1:02:19.00 Reviews/Outro: 1:02:20.00 - end
We open this week with Amanda Micheli's HALFTIME (2:31), a moving Netflix documentary that follows Jennifer Lopez as she reflects on her career and starts to navigate the second half of it, leading up to her halftime performance at the 2020 Super Bowl. Next, we discuss Sophie Hyde's GOOD LUCK TO YOU, LEO GRANDE (22:56), a poignant dramedy about a widow (Emma Thompson) who hires a sex worker (Daryl MacCormack) to help her expand her sexual horizons. We wrap up with Cooper Raiff's CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH (44:11), a charming dramedy about recent college grad who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a mother and her autistic daughter while he's working as a Bar/Bat Mitzvah party starter. And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about the winner of our Studio Ghibli poll, Hayao Miyazaki's 1989 film KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE!
This week on a sex obsessed Truth & Movies we're talking about Pleasure, Good Luck To You Leo Grande and soft-core classic Emmanuelle. Hosted by Picturehouse's very own Sam Clements, The Love Of Cinema podcast is proudly supported by Kia. Sam is joined by director Sophie Hyde (Animals) to discuss her latest film, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande. Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson), a retired schoolteacher and widow, is yearning for some adventure, some human connection, and some sex. Good sex. Whilst her husband Robert provided a home, a family, and something resembling a life, good sex was never on offer. But he's gone now, and Nancy has a plan: she will find adventure with a sex worker named Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack). In an anonymous hotel room Nancy greets Leo. He looks every bit as good as his picture, but what Nancy wasn't expecting was conversation as well as fornication. Leo has a view on everything, and though he may not always tell the truth, Nancy finds she likes him. And he likes her. With growing sexual confidence, Nancy starts to relax. Over the course of three rendezvous, the power dynamics shift and their well-worn masks begin to slip.
