Authenticity and Keeping it Human are the Keys to Good Events Today (ft. Shawna Suckow, Founder, SPIN (Senior Planners Industry Network)OPENING QUOTE:“The pandemic removed our filter, we don't have time for BS, we don't have time for lack of authenticity, we don't have time for polished over professionalism, just be a human. We're exhausted; just tell us how it's going to be, and we'll do it. We want to have distractions and fun along the way, it can't be all business. That's reflected in the meetings that we need to plan as well, it can't be all business. We are so hungry for human connection, and we don't get that sitting and listening to the speakers; on one the one hand, I'm a speaker, but also, I want my attendees to be energized and interested and engaged, and so it's a balance that has to happen. The meeting planner has so much power to control that outcome that maybe wasn't there before, and now I think people are really ready to hear it. Whereas before, the committee or board would before say we have to cram as much education into this conference as possible. Now they are realizing they have humans in those seats, and they need more than that; they need to be stimulated to have this conversation in the hallway after the speaker and have the energy to come back in for the next speaker, being an engaged and interested audience.”-Shawna SuckowSUMMARY:This week, we hear from a leader in the events industry on authenticity, how to engage audiences, and how to feed event attendees that are hungry for human connections. In this episode, Kathy Klotz-Guest and A. Lee Judge discuss being authentically you, content creation, marketing strategies and more.Kathy Klotz-Guest shares the importance of being yourself and using improv as a marketing strategy to create engaging content and build reputable relationships. In this episode of the Business of Marketing podcast, Kathy Klotz-Guest and I talk about how to “Keep It Human”, get past “Business Boring” and creating engaging content.Conversation points:Kathy, I love it when I see people who have been able to bring their whole selves, (including their natural talents and passions) to the business world. Tell me about your journey in bringing Improv Comedy into your lessons in business and marketing strategy.Help me paint this picture Kathy… You meet with a stiff, over-jargoned executive team. That team has been tasked with being a part of the content creation process by being the experts in audio and video content. You know that they and their company culture is a bit boring. Where do you start? Kathy, I've worked for some very, very conservative global organizations. So conservative that, showing that you have a unique personality can be seen as unprofessional. How does one be more human and show more color in their personalities without crossing the line? I was in Israel a few years ago and saw a billboard ad for English lessons. It had a picture of Samuel L. Jackson with his famous line from Pulp Fiction saying… “English Motha F... Do You Speak It!?”This is how I feel when I'm in some business meetings. When it comes to being more human in Branded Content, what do you say about Jargon? Kathy, we've both been involved with teaching Content Marketing for a while and you have a book with a title that I love, ““Stop Boring Me!” How to Create Kick-Ass Marketing Content, Products and Ideas Through the Power of Improv.”” Tell us about the book. Kathy, it's been a pleasure chatting with you, but before we go, please tell us where we can find you online and even more fun, in person at one of your improves.A. And in fact, in some cases, it might even be the best choice. And at the end of the day, everything else you do is on rented land, social media is rented land. If you're trying to get better search engine rankings, it's rented to YouTube, Apple podcasts, it's all rented land, we don't own it, the only thing we own our own websites, more importantly, our own email lists, right, which give us direct communication. And we could say the same thing on a podcast and YouTube as well. This is content, it's gonna live forever in the search engines. It's out of your control, but you're building asset. They continue to develop a deeper relationship with their customers, their customers continue to open their emails, and they continue to act upon what those calls to action are.Because once again, they may see us on social media, they may not they may see us in search engines, they may not they may come to our website, they may not. But the email, we know that we can get in front of people, right. And when we get in front of people, we need to be strategic about how we do it. But if we are given the privilege to directly communicate with people, that gives us an opportunity to deepen the relationship on our timeline, rather than the timeline of an arbitrary algorithm.I realized there was a gap in the market marketers were being misled on what influencer marketing was, they were missing out on an extremely impactful way of developing business of developing influential relationships of developing community. We sort of sometimes take for granted the actual verbiage that we use in our messaging, and it's critical. "When we have compassion and empathy for ourselves, we will radiate that to other people." Kathy Klotz Kathy Klotz-Guest is a speaker, author, comedian, and founder of Keeping It Human. Kathy started Keeping It Human after 15 years leading tech marketing and communications. Her mission is to help leaders, teams and companies use Improv and humor principles to be happier, healthier, and more creative all the while having more fun. Cathy has worked for global brands such as Amazon, Dow Jones and Deloitte and has spoken internationally on company and conference stages, including South by Southwest, Inbound and coming soon, TEDx salon. In addition, Kathy studied and performed Improv at Comedy Sports and Sketch at the second city La. Kathy still performs and teaches Improv and stand up. Kathy is a graduate of Stanford University and UC Berkeley with an MBA and a Masters of Arts. She is currently working on her third book and still barely makes her teen kids laugh. The challenges that organizations have today stems from fear and uncertainty and this keeps people from moving forward because they get stuck in old patterns that have to be unlearned. Leaders thought that they had to have all the answers but with a shift of mindset towards improvisational thinking, we reframe leadership and suddenly realize that leaders don't have to have all the answers and that it is okay to let go. Leaders constantly send these conflicting, contradictory messages, which are shut-up signals. Suppose we don't do something about honoring the way people learn and how they check for credibility and honesty in an organization. In that case, we are just shooting ourselves in the foot repeatedly because we're doing the same things and expecting that it's going to be different. Leaders must let people experiment and know that it's safe to fail. Part of growing that muscle is to be okay with failure and see it as learning. The difference between people who succeed and those who don't is that the people who succeed keep trying and keep showing up every day. People have a template mentality about how things are supposed to work, but that's not how humans or life works. The reality is so much of the bravery, boldness, and the art of learning to show up human, making mistakes, learning, and improving. This requires us to use this muscle of trusting the process. Lead with compassion. Give yourself permission to play, be human, and make mistakes. When you do that for yourself, you are more likely to show up that way for other people, which will automatically make it safer for other people to connect with you. What do you get when you combine an impressive education, experience in tech marketing, and a love of stand-up comedy and storytelling? You get Kathy Klotz-Guest, founder of Keeping It Human! Kathy is a textbook example of creative problem solving and out-of-the-box thinking. People create products and services. People use products and services. Yet the traditional approaches Kathy found in her mid-90's tech marketing jobs seemed to completely ignore the people and humanity. As intelligent humans are prone to do, Kathy saw a problem, then set out to solve it. Armed with the skills she was honing doing stand-up company and improv after hours, Kathy started to introduce idea that telling stories and bringing humanity into the picture could change everything in marketing. Long before YouTube and social media changed the face of marketing, Kathy was laying the groundwork. Improv and comedy were fun and invigorating. Corporate tech marketing was not. Armed with the idea that people relate to real people, humor and even vulnerability, Kathy left the corporate world behind and set out to turn marketing and selling on its ear. She was brave enough to call the marketing establishment on its tone-deafness. Using the first feedback coming back across the early Internet, Kathy started to convince the establishment that she was on to something. Marketing was really storytelling. It required experimentation and risk taking and a willingness for brands to abandon the safety of the corporate monolithic image. Brands had to become human, and Kathy was ready to teach that lesson. What followed was 20 years of innovation and creativity in storytelling on both business and comedy staged in the San Fransisco Bay area. There have been seminars, workshops, speaking engagements, and books. When Kathy says things, smart marketers listen. Her commitment to creatively changing the face of that business is paying off, and its a GREAT story. Imagine that? An expert storyteller with a great story to tell. Thanks Kathy!
