Happiness is becoming scarcer as more of us work harder, longer hours. Most adults don't have a productivity problem—they have a joy problem. Somewhere between responsibilities, careers, parenting, and achievement, many people abandon happiness, that playful, curious version of themselves that once came naturally. Do we build better habits at the sake of losing our joy? Improv comedian, speaker, and workplace culture expert Erin Diehl argues that play is far more than entertainment—it's a gateway to resilience, creativity, authentic leadership, self-love, and deeper human connection. Through powerful stories about burnout, post-concussion recovery, IVF heartbreak, motherhood, and rebuilding her life around joy instead of achievement, Erin shares how learning to surrender control, develop happiness as a skill, embrace uncertainty, and intentionally create space for fun transformed both her personal life and business. If you've been feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, overly serious, or stuck in constant productivity mode, this conversation offers a practical and deeply human reminder that joy isn't a reward for success—it might actually be the path to it. What if the secret to handling life's curveballs—from school board battles to flight delays—was hidden in the rules of improv? In this episode, Amy Liz Harrison unpacks how the power of “Yes, And” can transform our daily interactions. Drawing from personal stories (hello, monkey bar mishaps and honor roll debates), Amy gives us a real-time lesson in emotional agility, communication with grace, and embracing humor in hard moments. With a blend of wit, wisdom, and lived experience, Amy shares five magical “power phrases” that help shift energy, protect peace, and create connection—even when life serves you squid instead of a hamburger. This one's a must-listen for anyone navigating tough conversations, curmudgeonly Christians, or just trying not to lose it at the post office.5 Key TakeawaysImprov is life practice. Responding with openness instead of defensiveness creates opportunity for connection.Use “yes, and…” to validate others' experiences while guiding the conversation toward solutions or humor.Power phrases like “how wild!” or “your feelings are welcome here” can de-escalate tension and foster empathy.Choose curiosity over certainty. Wearing life like a loose garment can prevent unnecessary emotional tangles.Invite co-solution, not confrontation. Asking “What would you do if you were me?” empowers both parties to collaborate.Timestamped Moments[01:44] – Why improv theater taught Amy how to handle negativity in everyday life[07:00] – Real-life example: trying to change school culture, one pep band request at a time[14:56] – How to disarm negativity with light humor (and what to say instead of clapping back)[36:18] – “How rude!” – Amy's favorite sarcastic tool to keep things light[44:44] – “Your feelings are welcome here”—the ultimate parenting phraseNotable Quotes“Improv is a way of practicing life on life's terms.” “Yes, and is not just a communication tool—it's a life philosophy.” “How rude!—It's sarcastic, but it lightens the mood like magic.”Resources & MentionsComedy Sports – Improv comedy shows in various U.S. citiesRule 62 – A 12-step principle: Don't take yourself too seriouslyAmy Liz Harrison's Memoirs – Eternally Awkward & Eternally ExpectingVisit www.amylizharrison.comFeeling inspired to reframe your next awkward moment? These games not only help build relationships, but they also flip the switch on how we typically feel about mistakes – simply by celebrating and encouraging them. This episode wraps up by explaining how these three games can be used in classrooms, especially if students are slightly hesitant.Curriculum Associates' BlogTwitterInstagramEmail: ExtraordinaryEducators@cainc.com

“Your mind sometimes hijacks your emotions to think the worst-case scenario in order to protect yourself. You need to reclaim your mind in order to be in control.” Jay Sukow Jay began teaching for Second City in 2010 and teaches in both the Improv and Conservatory programs. He is also a facilitator with Second City Works, teaching improv to business professionals to drive behavior change. Previously, he was on faculty at The Second City Chicago, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago. He is the co-host of “Improvcast with Jay and Landon” and currently performs around town with the group Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and Jay Sukow, as well as the monthly show Improv Famous. He has over 25 years of experience as a leader. As an Improv leader and coach, Jay speaks about the dynamics of living the future and having a standard that we can never live up to instead of living in the moment and the “now.” A difference in how we look at the world shifts our focus from our failures into the zone of learning and growing. We will always have stressors in our lives, and instead of avoiding them, we need to learn how to deal with them because we all have seasons and ups and downs; just because it happens now doesn't mean that it will be the same forever. However, always having a positive mindset in all situations will lead you to a happy and more content life, both personally and professionally. • From stand-up to outstanding – with a lot of work • “It is a leadership tool” (Total Recorded Time is 23:44) It takes a lot of practice to do improv, whether on stage as an entertainer or in front of your staff as the organization's leader, says Peter Margaritis, a CPA who calls himself the “Accidental Accountant” and who has been doing something other than crunching numbers for years. Not overly in love with accounting, Mr. Margaritis tried standup comedy in the late 1980s. Since he's not seen cracking jokes on late night TV, it may be apparent the spotlight failed to find him. But that attempt to make people laugh opened a new door for him as a leadership coach, speaker and author. “Improv … is about the ability to take our knowledge and experiences and bring it into any situation,” says Mr. Margaritis. “It is a leadership tool.” Peter Margaritis talks about improving your impro in this Bizgnis Interview podcast. Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
This is episode 491. Tips for Sales Career Success. Read the complete transcription on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. BOB'S TIP: "Cling to, “Yes and.” There's an oversimplification that the majority of people use for ‘yes and' that it's an ideation tool only. At its core, it's a communication tool because you cannot ‘yes and' somebody without listening to them, without understanding them. And' is the bridge to your voice. This provides this opportunity to build bridges. ‘Yes and' links to that postponement of judgment. ‘Yes and' is a fantastic conflict management technique. Imagine some difficult questions being thrown your way or pushback that you're receiving. A way to deal with both of those is through ‘yes and.'

“So, I have this concept which I call ‘Listening to Ignite', which is, you're listening for things that can really light up the other person. So, it's about what your curiosity clicks into. And can you ask a question that allows them a launchpad to show the best of their skill, their experience, their expertise, their background? And I think in that occasion, when you're thinking of those questions, when you're thinking of something you remember, not being present with that person is almost the more generous act.”That is Max Dickins, an improv artist who helps leaders and their teams get extraordinary outcomes through the use of improvisation techniques. Many months back, I had reviewed Max's superb book, 'Improvise: Use the Secrets of Improv to achieve Extraordinary Results at Work' and was delighted to have him on my podcast. For the uninitiated, improv, short for ‘Improvisational theatre' is the art of unscripted theatre. But it goes so much beyond that. It's a whole different way of thinking. A way of thinking that has applications in almost all aspects of life - whether at work or at home.In the book, Max shares several lessons from improv that can help you to: • Be more creative • Listen better • Become more mentally agile • Improve spontaneity • Enhance collaboration • Embrace failure and learn from it We touch upon all of these topics in the conversation. I specifically was curious to know how Improv principles can help us listen and present better at the workplace. Max has some great ideas for us. Bob Kulhan, professor and performer, teaches how improvisation can improve communication, collaboration, agility, and adaptability at work and in your personal life.
This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I connected with Dr. Jennifer Christner, doctor, educator, and improviser. Jennifer G. Christner, MD is the Dean, School of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Dr. Christner was practicing general pediatrics when early in her career, she was selected to become a National Faculty Development Scholar by the Academic Pediatric Association. This changed her focus from seeing patients to developing educational methods to train better doctors. This new path fascinated her, so since then, she has completed training programs in Medical Education as well as a Certification in Research. Dr. Christner works on research regarding new methods of medical education and faculty development. Most recently, Dr. Christner founded Christner Strategies, LLC to bring together all her skills and research. With this new business she is providing medical education consulting for her academic clients, and executive/life coaching for professionals in both academic and nonacademic environments. Dr. Christner also speaks at events about a variety of faculty development and leadership topics including the use of improvisation to enhance communication skills. When I met Dr. Christner (she told me to call her Jenny), we talked about how she got connected with the improv community in Houston, Texas. You see, the medical profession is tough (like really really tough), and Dr. Jenny needed a little break from all the hard work she had been doing. So she decided to take an improv class and completely fell in love with it. Dr. Jenny had already been focused on helping doctors tap into their creativity to work on soft skills like communication and professionalism. So when she found improv, it opened up a new door for her. She had found a new way to show her students how to open up, how to learn empathy, how to listen. In our conversation, we have a great chat about Dr. Jenny's creative path. We start with her dreams of being a ballerina and we follow her journey through to the creation of Christner Strategies, LLC, her new life coaching company that supports leaders in both academic and nonacademic environments. Support Dr. Jenny Christner by hiring Christner Strategies, LLC (or by telling someone else about her great services)! You can also help Dr. Jenny by supporting her improv community in Houston, The Station Theater! New classes starting IN PERSON on July 14th! Belina Raffy is on a mission to make climate change… funnier. She teaches Sustainable Stand-up, in order to enable people to be able to talk about the serious topic of climate change with humour, in order to more effectively engage our citizens and encourage behaviour change. We'll talk about failed advocacy techniques, angry Australians, making vegans nicer, whataboutism and how to shine bright, giggly light into the dark crevasses of the global climate change narrative. Helping companies and teams to unlock their natural creative ability can be daunting to innovation leaders. One method that I have found incredibly useful is to use improv comedy skills as a way to get team members comfortable being uncomfortable since in improv, you never know what's going to happen next. Kelly Leonard, Executive Director of Insights and Applied Improvisation at The Second City and Second City Works, shares his experience and insights from Second City being part of the training for such creative talent as Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Amy Poehler, Seth Meyers, Steve Carell, Keegan Michael Key, Amy Sedaris and others. So what role can and does improv comedy skills play in helping teams and individuals boost their creative output? Through Second City Works, Kelly and his team bring the skills, training and experiences of improvisational comedy to help companies such as Coca Cola, Microsoft, Memorial Sloan Kettering and DDB Worldwide unlock their teams natural ability to be highly creative. How? Improv Comedy Skills Leonard shares there are two core basic skills that directly apply: Careful listening: In one exercise he uses with clients, a group has to create a story one word at a time by having each person in a circle add one (and only one) word to the story based on what has been said already. It forces people to have to focus on their listen skills and not their talking skills since 90% of this exercise is about listening. Building on the ideas of other by using "Yes And ..": In a second exercise, Leonard sets a rule that for the first team minutes, any comments ideas must build on the ideas of others by starting each statement with the words, "Yes - and ...". This reinforces listening skills and offering positive reinforcement to the original idea and the premise that the best ideas on built upon the ideas of others. For more exercises and how they apply to the business world, check out Kelly Leonard's book, Yes, And: How Improvisation Reverses "No, But" Thinking and Improves Creativity and Collaboration--Lessons from The Second City. Kelly shares a number of other experiences and examples of how improve comedy can boost innovation. To hear the other examples, listen to the audio from show below ..
