“Your mind sometimes hijacks your emotions to think the worst-case scenario in order to protect yourself. You need to reclaim your mind in order to be in control.” Jay Sukow Jay began teaching for Second City in 2010 and teaches in both the Improv and Conservatory programs. He is also a facilitator with Second City Works, teaching improv to business professionals to drive behavior change. Previously, he was on faculty at The Second City Chicago, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago. He is the co-host of “Improvcast with Jay and Landon” and currently performs around town with the group Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and Jay Sukow, as well as the monthly show Improv Famous. He has over 25 years of experience as a leader. As an Improv leader and coach, Jay speaks about the dynamics of living the future and having a standard that we can never live up to instead of living in the moment and the “now.” A difference in how we look at the world shifts our focus from our failures into the zone of learning and growing. We will always have stressors in our lives, and instead of avoiding them, we need to learn how to deal with them because we all have seasons and ups and downs; just because it happens now doesn't mean that it will be the same forever. However, always having a positive mindset in all situations will lead you to a happy and more content life, both personally and professionally. • From stand-up to outstanding – with a lot of work • “It is a leadership tool” (Total Recorded Time is 23:44) It takes a lot of practice to do improv, whether on stage as an entertainer or in front of your staff as the organization's leader, says Peter Margaritis, a CPA who calls himself the “Accidental Accountant” and who has been doing something other than crunching numbers for years. Not overly in love with accounting, Mr. Margaritis tried standup comedy in the late 1980s. Since he's not seen cracking jokes on late night TV, it may be apparent the spotlight failed to find him. But that attempt to make people laugh opened a new door for him as a leadership coach, speaker and author. “Improv … is about the ability to take our knowledge and experiences and bring it into any situation,” says Mr. Margaritis. “It is a leadership tool.” Peter Margaritis talks about improving your impro in this Bizgnis Interview podcast. Sales Game Changers | Tip-Filled Conversations with Sales Leaders About Their Successful Careers
This is episode 491. Tips for Sales Career Success. Read the complete transcription on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. BOB'S TIP: "Cling to, “Yes and.” There's an oversimplification that the majority of people use for ‘yes and' that it's an ideation tool only. At its core, it's a communication tool because you cannot ‘yes and' somebody without listening to them, without understanding them. And' is the bridge to your voice. This provides this opportunity to build bridges. ‘Yes and' links to that postponement of judgment. ‘Yes and' is a fantastic conflict management technique. Imagine some difficult questions being thrown your way or pushback that you're receiving. A way to deal with both of those is through ‘yes and.'

Facilitator Shannon Hughes shares how she uses improv and other experiential learning techniques to help her clients get the results they want and how to help prospective clients want to hire her to use these techniques.
“So, I have this concept which I call ‘Listening to Ignite', which is, you're listening for things that can really light up the other person. So, it's about what your curiosity clicks into. And can you ask a question that allows them a launchpad to show the best of their skill, their experience, their expertise, their background? And I think in that occasion, when you're thinking of those questions, when you're thinking of something you remember, not being present with that person is almost the more generous act.”That is Max Dickins, an improv artist who helps leaders and their teams get extraordinary outcomes through the use of improvisation techniques. Many months back, I had reviewed Max's superb book, 'Improvise: Use the Secrets of Improv to achieve Extraordinary Results at Work' and was delighted to have him on my podcast. For the uninitiated, improv, short for ‘Improvisational theatre' is the art of unscripted theatre. But it goes so much beyond that. It's a whole different way of thinking. A way of thinking that has applications in almost all aspects of life - whether at work or at home.In the book, Max shares several lessons from improv that can help you to: • Be more creative • Listen better • Become more mentally agile • Improve spontaneity • Enhance collaboration • Embrace failure and learn from it We touch upon all of these topics in the conversation. I specifically was curious to know how Improv principles can help us listen and present better at the workplace. Max has some great ideas for us. This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I connected with Dr. Jennifer Christner, doctor, educator, and improviser. Jennifer G. Christner, MD is the Dean, School of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). Dr. Christner was practicing general pediatrics when early in her career, she was selected to become a National Faculty Development Scholar by the Academic Pediatric Association. This changed her focus from seeing patients to developing educational methods to train better doctors. This new path fascinated her, so since then, she has completed training programs in Medical Education as well as a Certification in Research. Dr. Christner works on research regarding new methods of medical education and faculty development. Most recently, Dr. Christner founded Christner Strategies, LLC to bring together all her skills and research. With this new business she is providing medical education consulting for her academic clients, and executive/life coaching for professionals in both academic and nonacademic environments. Dr. Christner also speaks at events about a variety of faculty development and leadership topics including the use of improvisation to enhance communication skills. When I met Dr. Christner (she told me to call her Jenny), we talked about how she got connected with the improv community in Houston, Texas. You see, the medical profession is tough (like really really tough), and Dr. Jenny needed a little break from all the hard work she had been doing. So she decided to take an improv class and completely fell in love with it. Dr. Jenny had already been focused on helping doctors tap into their creativity to work on soft skills like communication and professionalism. So when she found improv, it opened up a new door for her. She had found a new way to show her students how to open up, how to learn empathy, how to listen. In our conversation, we have a great chat about Dr. Jenny's creative path. We start with her dreams of being a ballerina and we follow her journey through to the creation of Christner Strategies, LLC, her new life coaching company that supports leaders in both academic and nonacademic environments. Support Dr. Jenny Christner by hiring Christner Strategies, LLC (or by telling someone else about her great services)! You can also help Dr. Jenny by supporting her improv community in Houston, The Station Theater! New classes starting IN PERSON on July 14th! Hey Storytellers,In this episode, we talk about how many premade adventures can't be run strictly by the book and that you, as the game master, may need to use your mad improvisational skills (or amateur ones), to make up for the fact that your gaming group wasn't a part of their test market (assuming they even had one). Check out our newest book - Human NPC's: 84 Complete NPC's for 5th edition to use in your RPG in minutes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TCKRZTM/ Check out our first book - 19 RPG Adventures for Game Masters to Run in any TTRPG: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NQ38H2KFun fact: most premade adventures aren't playtested and some have been ported from system to system so much that they still bring misprints (looking at you Tomb of Horrors). So this covers how to fix some of those problems as you read through premade adventures. It will also cover how to scale up or scale down the challenge of each premade on the fly so that you can provide some sort of challenge (or not just kill everyone 10+ times - true story). Finally, we will cover what happens if the players what to do a game-breaking choice and how to say "yes, but" to that.

Stephen and I discuss his recent move from NYC to Lisbon to be on the front lines of developing the improv scene in Portugal. This was a fun conversation with lots of good advice throughout! My guest for this episode is Andrea Hummel. Andrea is trained in multicultural diversity, mediation and trauma recovery. She holds a Masters in applied anthropology American University (Washington, DC) with additional studies in refugee affairs and linguistics. Andrea holds a Theory certification in TSM psychodrama for post-traumatic growth and presents at conferences both in the US and abroad. In 1991 she founded a consulting firm specializing in cultural diversity and human relations consulting, providing training, cultural needs assessments, and human relations consulting. She was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Florida and Manatee Community College. Initially Andrea's focus was on preventing conflict (via cultural understanding); now it is on resolving conflict (via improvisations). She is the developer of the cutting-edge “i4 peacedramas” method for helping individuals, nonprofits, and communities increase empathy, decrease miscommunication, and create alternate endings to organizational conflict. No stranger to staying focused during crisis, she was in the Middle East during the 1990 Kuwaiti oil crisis, Guatemala during the 1995 refugee persecutions, and Greece during the 2015 refugee crisis. Andrea and Mary discuss gaining a better understanding of organizational issues using experiential learning, not just talking about issues. We explore how to use "improv" as a tool to improve communication and working relationships. Episode 009 – Using the Power of Improv at your Trade Shows (Part 1) – Interview with Roger Miller of Tues@7 Show Notes from Interview with Roger Miller – Part 1 Introducing Roger Miller – a right-brained person in a left-brained world. Roger has the unique background combination of being in the not-very exciting medical Insurance industry, and also a special effects makeup artist! Roger has been involved in many shows in both of his worlds – insurance and special effects makeup. He draws on inspiration from both to give great tips and value for you and how to do things differently in your booth for greater customer engagement and results. Tips for doing things differently at the trade show booth: · Learn from Experiential shows that are extremely creative. The energy, creativity, engagement, live streaming, multi-media and more are used in more of the arts, theater and creative industry shows. · Iconic characters are one way companies can brand themselves and build on themes · In the insurance industry, think of Progressive’s “Flo” and Allstate’s “Mayhem” · Memorable and effective for very different reasons · Flo is good but Mayhem is great because his character immediately ties to the benefits of having insurance. · But think about characters like that and what make them memorable. Then think of those aspects and how you can create a character or a brand image using those characteristics. · Try to bring the same kind of creativity to the show floor and use it in a way that stops attendees in their tracks and allow you to engage in new and exciting ways. · Obviously this takes planning with your team prior to the show to give you enough time to execute your plan. · Figure out what emotion you need to get from your audience. Is it fear, like in the insurance industry? Is it desire? Or something else? · Then its about taking it to the next level – taking your attendees to a place they haven’t gone or typically don’t go at a trade show. o For example – at an auto show go beyond just letting people sit in one of your cars and give them an immersive test drive experience. · Step 1 is Drawing Attention – how do we actually get people to stop. · Step 2 is Engaging the attendees · If you are in a more traditional business industry like insurance, being creative will really help you stand out at your next show. However, if you are in a creative field like art, music or theater, then you really have to ramp up your game because everyone there will be employing creativity. · Don’t call your booth staff your sales people or marketing people or whatever their usual role is. Call them Your Cast. Using Improv · When most people think of improv, their minds go to the TV show “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” starring Drew Carey. o Most people who watched this thought that there is no way this could be improvised – these people are way too good. This must be rehearsed. o But it is truly improvised! o The key to these people being so good is that they practice their improv by practicing various situations that they might be put in. So when new situations come up, they can pull from things they have practiced in the past that are similar...

Jessie Shternshus founded The Improv Effect (https://improveffect.com) to help businesses reach their full potential by means of interpersonal-communication skills training. Her work includes leveraging tools and practices from improv to help individuals and organizations improve the way they interact and problem solve. Jessie is also the author of the book CTRLShift: 50 Games For 50 ****ing Days Like Today. (amzn.to/2Qy0eAi) In this interview, Jessie and I discuss ways in which improv practices can be used to improve your listening skills, develop your ability to read the room, and find more effective ways to respond. Personal Note: Jessie is brilliant, kind, and extremely patient. During the latter half of the conversation, I asked Jessie about one of the ways I often try to emphasize certain points in class or when I am presenting. In a supportive, kind, and patient way, she helped me see how that "habit" can impact the folks I am working with. I got completely schooled and I am grateful to her for the lesson. That's my best advice. It's irrelevant what they think about you. It's nothing, it's air, it's ether. You need to stop that and you need to say this is what I believe and this is what I'm trying to do. You may succeed, you may fail. Belina Raffy is on a mission to make climate change… funnier. She teaches Sustainable Stand-up, in order to enable people to be able to talk about the serious topic of climate change with humour, in order to more effectively engage our citizens and encourage behaviour change. We've been friends for a few year so our conversation about her amazing work is peppered with goofing around. We'll talk about failed advocacy techniques, angry Australians, making vegans nicer, whataboutism and how to shine bright, giggly light into the dark crevasses of the global climate change narrative. Dr. Daphne Scott, founder of DS Leadership Life, specializes in creating mindful leaders and mindful organizations through leadership coaching programs that focus on mindfulness, positivity, creativity, and fun. Daphne has developed her coaching programs throughout two decades of real world coaching and corporate development experience. She draws on her unique background in improv theater and physical therapy to bring engaging embodiment and team-building elements to her coaching and facilitation. As a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, certified Hendricks Coach, a founding member of the Conscious Leadership Group, and a member of the International Coaching Federation, Daphne has studied with top-level executive coaches, consciousness experts, and organizational psychologists. She holds a Masters Degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy from Andrews University. In today’s conversation, Daphne points to the main reason why leaders fail and reveals the five relationships a leader needs to develop in order to be successful. We also explore how improv can be a powerful tool for building leadership skills and how leadership can be found at any level in an organization. We further discuss the importance of feedback, fun, and value of building a “Yes/And” culture in your organization. Key Takeaways We make the assumption that a leader should magically be able to lead a group of people. However, most leaders are not equipped with the skills to lead. Five relationships a leader needs to have: Time, Money, Self-Identity, Friendships, Unknown When we are operating from fear we don’t have access to our best decision making. When people are engaged in an experience of play they learn much faster. A lot of leaders don’t need to learn how to have more productivity, they already have that; they just want to have that productivity with less stress. When we pin employee engagement solely on the leadership, we disempower 80% of the organization and set up a blame dynamic where people can blame their disengagement on their boss or the leadership team. The moment anyone in the organization makes the choice not to gossip about another person on the team, they are making an incredible decision about the culture they want to have. "One of the things we do is teach people that they need to use what they have, and that is ENOUGH...before you get up to do give a speech or a talk, or deliver a message to someone." GBD66: Human Intelligence. Jennifer Gardner talks to improv facilitator, speaker and founder of BraveSpace, Kristy West. 1 in 4 people are terrified of speaking in public, sometimes rating it their 2nd biggest fear (next to death). Improv teaches problem solving and encourages a sense of community, as students’ step into a role of making their classmates shine with the valued concept of “Mistakes are gifts.” This approach can be used in all classrooms as a valued brain break as well. Katie takes us through a couple of games, such as “Space Walk.” This game would be FABULOUS for a faculty meeting. The shared experience of this one game can enhance the community of adults in the building. Wow! Katie has shared some of her improv guidelines called “Yes…And for the Classroom” Grab here! • Katie on MyEdExpert • Katie's website • Katie on Twitter

She teaches improv to professionals to improve their listening, communication, connection, and creative skills. Jen shares what she thinks are the four points needed to be present to move forward with everyday listening: Who you are Where you are How you feel What you want If something is not moving forward in improv, or life, then you are probably missing one of these four things. Listening is a skill we underestimate. Choose to be present and listen actively, don’t be thinking about your next move. Laura Stoll is the Talent Development Consultant at Ernst & Young, and she has a fascinating perspective on how you can develop top talent within your organization that is influenced by her background in improv. Laura studied at Second City, iO, and ComedySportz Chicago. She even has the distinction of being the only student ever thrown out of previous guest (and current husband) Jay Sukow’s classroom! At EY, Laura strategizes, designs, and consults on large-scale programs designed to improve the value of the internal talent organization, which includes over 8,000 people. Their big focus right now is on the Career Journey. In every organization, people tend to resist change, especially the kind of large-scale change that Laura aims to create. So change management becomes critical, and that’s where the fundamentals of improv can really come into play. Improv isn’t about making things up––it’s about planning like mad, and then being prepared to throw your script away to meet the needs of the person you are talking to or working with. Learning improvisational skills inspires a more adaptable mindset, and you can’t approach change without that. Possibly the most exciting thing about Laura’s work at EY is that other people see the value of these skills, and the top leaders in the organization are getting excited about improv. There’s simply no way to effectively inspire a change in culture without buy-in from the top, so this is a huge step for a huge organization. And taking that step isn’t optional any more, for any organization. Global markets and whole industries are shifting rapidly – the organizations and individuals who resist change will be left behind. “If you’re not actively moving to shift your skill set so that you can be more in the moment, react, and respond – and ultimately be a trusted business advisor – you’re going to be left behind because that’s just the way things are evolving.” If you want to take your first step today, just practice awareness: When you feel yourself putting up a wall, saying no, or reacting negatively, pause and ask yourself, “How could it work?” It’s basic, but that little tweak will start you on the path to change. Neil Curran, improv teacher and performer, and Anna Wilson, improv performer, join me to discuss how improvisation skills could help you nail your next pitch and unleash the potential of your team. And the good news is, you were already doing it as a kid! We talk about banning the “but” word, team making vs team breaking and embracing your mistakes. Key takeaways [1:53] Improv is usually associated with comedy but really it is something we all are born doing but tend to lose as adults. It is how we react and how we listen. Its about spontaneity, how we respond in the moment. [3:27] Improv skills are life skills. As children we just want to play, kids don’t have the constraints we put on ourselves as adults. Fear of punishment shuts down playfulness and creativity. [5:39] 'Mistakes are just a new way of doing things' - Jill BernardClick To Tweet [7:55] How Anna came to improv. Discovered it's not about being funny and witty but about being supportive of your partner on stage. [11:34] Team building days usually mean being sent to a competitive environment or activity - not necessarily the right approach to build a strong collaborative team. An effective team is people working together. [17:37] As a techie, Anna came from a “no but” approach to working on ideas but through improv has changed to a "yes and" approach. You build on ideas rather than tearing them down. [22:41] 'The edge of your comfort zone is where the magic happens when it comes to learning'Click To Tweet [28:04] Within the corporate environment, improv is a tool to help you achieve what you want. Used in sales training, for communication skills, negotiation and conflict resolution. [37:53] Mindfulness through improv as an alternative to sitting in a quiet room, breathing in and out. [43:29] Improv teaches you to care less about what you think other people think of you [44:14] Neil on confidence when speaking in public: Perception is reality, fake it til you make it and over time you will turn it into real confidence [47:50] Neil and Anna's top 5 tips on public speaking and presentations: Your audience is already on your side. You’re already the expert Find what you're passionate about in your topic. That is what will sell it to your audience and make it engaging Understand what the audience needs If you're having fun, your audience will have fun [56:00] Neil's biggest tip: Do something that scares you every day!Click To Tweet [57:19] Anna's biggest tip: If you want to do it, you have to do it!Click To Tweet Links to things mentioned lowerthetone.com @improvneil Speechless Live @yesitsanna Zenprov

Dan Attfield and Paul Hammond discovered that the rules of improv comedy are the polar opposite of Patrick Lencioni's "Five Dysfunctions of a Team." For example, the first dysfunction is Absense of Trust, but in an effective team, you encourage the Presence of Trust. The duo walked Agile Amped through a series of exercises that they used in their session "The Five Dysfunctions of an Improvised Comedy Group"--which started out right with a blackout disco with Beyonce blaring on the speakers. In the end, Dan and Paul have one goal: getting people to change their egocentric views to one that focuses on making others look awesome. And how he now helps others to do the same through comedy and performance. Cameron worked in advertising for over 10 years. Found it very stressful and anxiety-inducing. Over time it got worse began to include depression. Cameron went for therapy and at some point someone remarked on how he made jokes and should perhaps try improv. Eventually he tried improv at Second City. It helped a lot. 10 years later, he teaches at Second City, and has introduced the Improv to Anxiety program. Links: http://playwithfireimprov.com/ In this particular episode you will learn: - How for a lot of Cameron's childhood no one even labeled what he had as Anxiety - How Cameron first ruled out any physical issues before considering that it might be mental - How a lot of Anxiety sufferers try to be funny to cover up their anxiety - How improv shows us that it's OK to not be perfect - How to be more gentle and loving than constantly needing to fix yourself - How with improv you can't be attached to the outcome because you don't know what it is - How Cameron decided to love himself as he was - There is a saying in improv "Mistakes are gifts" - Why Improv and overcoming anxiety are closely linked - If you're feeling nervous stand up - How we don't necessarily need to hit bottom in order to start changing

Using Improv in Your VO Career? YES and… some surprises with Kay Bess Part 3 of 4 on LovethatVoiceover In this 3rd part of my interview with Kay Bess, we have a nice discussion about improvisation and what it means to each of us as it relates to a voiceover career. It's a really cool conversation because we both have a small revelation about what we mean by the word ‘improvisation'. So we discuss the concept of ‘acting improvisation' versus pure improvisation. We also find hear her story of age 7 and being asked to be ‘funny' on stage – poor thing! We also touch on that aspect of community in VO again - how we are all somewhat isolated and looking to connect… Some specific improv examples with a script and Kay's quotable line, “It's really about keeping your mind sharp, open and willing.” Kay also gives a shout out to Rob Paulson and his live podcast because … well listen to my show and hear about it!! Kay Bess is an American voice actress with over 20 years experience and is the female voice of The Tennis Channel, the female imaging voice for Q107 Toronto, and narrated the insanely popular TV series The Property Brothers on HGTV, seasons 1-4.
