A Royal Train carrying Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII), derailed near Jarnadup, Western Australia, during his Australian tour. The accident occurred when the rails spread, causing the last two carriages, including the Prince's, to overturn down a low embankment. Remarkably, no one was injured, though the event temporarily trapped the Prince and his entourage in the overturned carriage. This incident, though potentially perilous, endeared the Prince even more to Australians. Known affectionately as the “Digger Prince,” his poise and quick wit during the ordeal reinforced his popularity with the public, already captivated by his tour of the country. The event remains a notable chapter in the history of royal visits to Australia, reflecting both the challenges of travel and the Prince's grace under pressure.Join Holly & Matthew as they explore the derailment, the tour, and the wider context of royal visits to Australia.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/weird-crap-in-australia--2968350/support.
When defenders of the British royal family scrounged around for dirt on Wallis Simpson, the divorced U.S.-born fiancee of King Edward VIII, they often highlighted her year spent in China—often sharing scurrilous, and poorly-sourced–if not entirely unfounded–details of her time there. China historian Paul French tries to set the record straight with Her Lotus Year: China, the Roaring Twenties, and the Making of Wallis Simpson (St. Martins: 2024). Simpson managed to have a jam-packed year, with time spent in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing, as different warlords fought for control of China. The American socialite Wallis Simpson is best known as the wife of former British king Edward VIII. When they announced their intention to marry, her status as a divorcée (and an American) caused a constitutional crisis that led to Edward's abdication in 1936. But long before that, Simpson's adventures had led her to spend a year in interwar China, from 1924-25, while fleeing her abusive first husband and allegedly transporting U.S. diplomatic documents. Later maligned by the British press for this "lotus year," the truth of Simpson's China sojourn reveals much about the chaotic state of the nation in the 1920s, and attitudes toward it — and foreigners living there — from outside. Our guest on the podcast this month is Paul French, a British writer who lived in Shanghai in the 1990s and 2000s, where he ran a market research firm. He is the author of several books on modern Chinese history, including the bestselling Midnight in Peking (Viking, 2012) and City of Devils (Picador, 2018). His latest title, Her Lotus Year: China, the Roaring Twenties, and the Making of Wallis Simpson (St Martin's Press, 2024), tells the full story of Simpson's China year, long before her tryst with King Edward VIII caused a scandal worthy of Harry and Megan. French talked to us about the political backdrop to this personal drama, what it shows about the status of foreigners in China, and the state of the “China book” in general. The China Books Podcast is a companion of China Books Review, a project of Asia Society's Center on U.S.-China Relations and The Wire, a digital business platform that also publishes The Wire China. We have two scandalous stories this week, but on a similar theme.Firstly our friend Dai Davies - former top royal protection officer - returns to the podcast to talk about how his former colleagues in the Metropolitan police have been dealing with royal scandals recently, and especially their interest (or lack of!) in certain allegations involving Prince Andrew, the disgraced Duke of York, and his past life as a trade envoy. Are we really all equal before the law in modern Britain? Then Andrew and Phil are joined by American fingerprint expert Pat Wertheim to discuss one of the greatest unsolved royal mysteries of all time - the murder of multi millionaire Harry Oakes in the Bahamas during the Second World War, whilst the Duke of Windsor - former King Edward VIII - is governor of the island. Is the Duke, along with others close to the case, involved in unusual financial dealings? Why did he treat the murder investigation in such an unorthodox manner? And why was an innocent man almost sent to the gallows whilst the obvious suspect walked clean away? It's a colourful tale worthy of Agatha Christie and, although the mystery has still not been solved, Pat and Andrew share their theories! You can buy books from the authors we feature here in our own Scandal Mongers bookshop - along with thousands more.https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/scandalmongersLooking for the perfect gift for a special scandalous someone - or someone you'd like to get scandalous with? At the turn of the last century, the French Riviera was mostly a winter destination for those in colder climates. It turns out that "fun in the sun" and "playground for the rich" are fairly modern concepts, but in a brilliant real estate move, American actress Maxine Elliott created both. Her waterfront Château de l'Horizon, constructed in 1932, became a veritable clubhouse for the rich, famous, and powerful on both sides of the Atlantic. Alicia takes us through some of the more notable personages, stories, and affairs from the heyday of the Château de l'Horizon, under Maxine Elliott's ownership, and later that of Prince Aly Khan. Among the luminaries who appear in this episode: Gerald and Sara Murphy; King Edward VII; William Montagu, 9th Duke of Manchester; George Keppel; Alice Keppel; Jennie Jerome Churchill; Winston Churchill; Elsie de Wolfe; Prince George, Duke of Kent; J.P. Morgan; King George V; King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson; Cecil Beaton; Cimmie Mosley; Picasso; Prime Minister David Lloyd George; the Aga Khan; Clark Gable; George Bernard Shaw; Lady Diana Cooper; Lady Doris Castlerosse; Daisy Fellows; Marion Davies; Edwina Mountbatten, Countess of Burma; The Mitford Sisters (and their brother); Randolph Churchill Jr.; Evelyn Waugh; Gloria Guinness; Kick Kennedy; Prince Aly Khan; Pamela Churchill; Rita Hayworth; Gianni Agnelli; JFK and Jackie Kennedy; Aristotle Onassis; Elizabeth Taylor and Eddie Fisher, just to name a few. In it Christine asks the question “What if it Edward, Prince of Wales, the man who briefly became King Edward VIII, had a love child?” Hi there. I'm your host, Jenny Wheeler, and a chance remark from a friend suggesting Edward sowed wild oats during his stay in Australia in his youth. got Christine thinking. During World War II, a new medium gave people on the homefront the kind of insight into the frontlines they had lacked during World War I: Radio. This relatively new technology enabled political figures such as Winston Churchill to warn of the dangers on Nazism even before the war. But radiowaves are not confined by national boundaries and the British were not the only ones to see the usefulness of this technology during war time. In 1939, listeners in the UK began hearing seemingly British yet unwelcome messages over the radio. In this episode I explore, Lord Haw Haw and the Nazi's radio propaganda machine.

King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Their relationship has long been lauded as a royal fairytale. But there was a lot more going on. Wallis never really liked Edward but became trapped by her own ambition. And Edward, desperate to find any mode of escaping the insurmountable pressure of his birth rite, became obsessed with the woman who dominated him. And they were both Nazi sympathizers. The abdication of a King who wasn't allowed by the church to marry a divorced woman was not nearly that simple. And the crisis that almost ended the British monarchy likely saved it in the end... Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. She was queen regnant of 32 sovereign states during her lifetime and 15 at the time of her death. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days is the longest of any British monarch, the longest recorded of any female head of state in history, and the second-longest verified reign of any monarch in history.Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, as the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father acceded to the throne in 1936 upon the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir presumptive. She was educated privately at home and began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021. They had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. When her father died in February 1952, Elizabeth—then 25 years old—became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon (known today as Sri Lanka), as well as Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, devolution in the United Kingdom, the decolonisation of Africa, and the United Kingdom's accession to the European Communities and withdrawal from the European Union. The number of her realms varied over time as territories gained independence and some realms became republics. Her many historic visits and meetings include state visits to China in 1986, Russia in 1994, and the Republic of Ireland in 2011, and meetings with five popes.Significant events include Elizabeth's coronation in 1953 and the celebrations of her Silver, Golden, Diamond, and Platinum jubilees in 1977, 2002, 2012, and 2022, respectively. She faced occasional republican sentiment and media criticism of her family, particularly after the breakdowns of her children's marriages, her annus horribilis in 1992, and the death of her former daughter-in-law Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997. She was served by 15 prime ministers during her reign, more than any other British monarch. Throughout her lifetime, support for the monarchy in the United Kingdom remained consistently high, as did her personal popularity. Elizabeth died aged 96 at Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire, in September 2022, and was succeeded by her eldest son, King Charles III.
One of history's most famous royal love affairs is threaded through Emily Hourican's latest novel. The backdrop to The Other Guinness Girl is the 1936 abdication crisis, when the newly-crowned King Edward VIII surrendered this throne to marry his twice-divorced American lover, Wallis Simpson. “What was it about her that so compelled the Prince of Wales? Why was he determined to give up everything for her?” asks Emily. Similarly, the 70 years, seven months and two days of her reignbecame the modern Elizabethan age. Born on April 21, 1926, Elizabeth AlexandraMary Windsor was the first child of Albert, Duke of York, and his wife, formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. His 16 years on the throne, from 1936 to 1952, took inone of the most turbulent periods in modern British history, including WorldWar II, the fragmentation of the Empire, and the construction of a new Britain. In 1952, when the young Princess Elizabeth —who in 1947 had married her third cousin, Prince Philip — was on a trip toKenya, the news came through of the death of her father, aged just 56. At theage of 25, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II, and a new era hadbegun, one that has only ended now, 70 years later.1947年,伊丽莎白与远房表亲菲利普王子结为夫妻。 The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, a titleher husband was given on their wedding day, had four children; Charles, Anne,Andrew and Edward. They, in turn, produced eight grandchildren and 12great-grandchildren, the most recent addition being Andrew's grand-daughter,Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021, and as those aroundthem struggled, the royal couple's marriage remained a rock of solidity untilthe Duke's death on Apr 9, 2021, aged 99. In contrast, of her children's marriages, onlyEdward's has survived, with the high-profile separation of Charles and hiswife, Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1992 being the darkest moment of what theQueen called an 'annus horribilis', which also saw Anne divorced and Andrewseparate from his wife, before the year ended with a serious fire at WindsorCastle. Events of 1997 took an even darker turn, however, when the fallout of the shock death of Diana in a car crash in Pariscaused the biggest crisis for the royal family since the abdication.1997年,事情发生了更为黑暗的转折,戴安娜王妃在法国巴黎因车祸丧生,给王室带来了自1936年爱德华八世退位以来最大的危机。As the nation reeled and saw spontaneousdisplays of mass public emotion, unlike anything normally expected of theBritish, the perceived lack of reaction from the Royal family and the Queen wastotally out of step with the national mood. Rattled by this, the Queen made a livetelevised address the night before Diana's funeral, and the mood abated, butthis was a rare example of the woman who was regarded for so many years as thenation's grandmother failing to gauge public feeling. If the 80s and 90s were troubled times for theroyals, the turn of the millennium ushered in a new era of optimism. Her Golden Jubilee in 2002 marked 50 years onthe throne, with a chain of celebratory beacons lit the length and breadth ofthe British Isles, and four years later, she celebrated her 80th birthday.2002年6月2日是伊丽莎白二世登基50周年纪念日,庆祝灯塔照亮了不列颠群岛。 But it was 2012 that was the truly vintage year, with first the celebrations of her Diamond Jubilee, to honor 60 years on thethrone, and then the London 2012 Olympics, which she formally opened, as wellas appearing in a short comedy film as part of Danny Boyle's dazzling openingceremony. Dark days soon returned, however. Family tensions arose again in January 2020,when her grandson Harry, Duke of Sussex, announced that he and his wife Meghanwould be stepping away from royal duties, causing a rift that has clearly upsetmany family members.2020年1月,王室成员之间的关系再次紧张起来。 The build-up to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in2022 saw Prince Andrew the focus of world attention because of his connectionsto convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and his subsequent public disgraceand removal from public life did significant damage.2022年是英国女王登基70周年。 One of the Queen's greatest strengths, both onthe domestic and world stages, was her detachment from politics. In a lifetimetravelling the world, she was entertained by and hosted countless monarchs, presidents and heads of state. She met every president of the United Statesduring her reign, except Lyndon B Johnson, who she would have met at John FKennedy's funeral had she not missed the trip as she was pregnant with Edward. In addition, the Queen saw 15 British primeministers during her reign, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss. Speculationover the content of the weekly private meetings she had with them was even the subjectof an award-winning theatrical play of 2013, The Audience. The Queen reigned through social and politicaltransformations such as the Suez Crisis, the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which claimed the life of her cousin Lord Mountbatten, the decline of Britain'smanufacturing industries, and change from being a post-Imperial power to beinga player in a global economy, with a substantial and varied immigrant community, and Brexit. In the run-up to the referendum in 2016, theunspoken convention of never ascribing political opinions to the Queen wasbroken by The Sun newspaper, when it claimed that, during a lunch with seniorpoliticians, she had voiced support for Britain leaving the trading bloc. The story caused a furious row, with BuckinghamPalace making a successful complaint to the press regulator Ipso, who calledthe article "misleading", and the Queen's reputation for impartialityremained intact. But Remain supporters were quick to react when,in 2017, the snap General Election led to a stripped-down ceremony for theState Opening of Parliament which was less formal than usual, and rather thanthe traditional royal robes, the Queen attended wearing a blue and yellowfloral hat which they said bore a strongly coincidental resemblance to the EUflag. Both sides of the Brexit divide trying, howeverindirectly, to claim royal patronage sums up the Queen's importance to the Britishpsyche and identity over the last 70 years. Born just eight years after the end of WorldWar I, she grew up in World War II, training as a vehicle mechanic and lorrydriver towards its end, and the first prime minister of her reign was wartimeleader Winston Churchill. Her death marks the severing of a bond whichties modern Britain to the wartime era which, through the language of debate, continues to cast a huge defining shadow across the modern British politicallandscape, sometimes to the bafflement of other countries. Her passing is also the end of an era for the world,as of all the world's major political leaders and heads of state, only USPresident Joe Biden, born in 1942, shares any connection to World War II. In the same way that Victoria, the previouslongest-reigning monarch, gave her name to her era, defining generations, thishas been the modern Elizabethan era, brought to a close by the Queen's death. She is now the past, and her successor, King Charles III, is the future.Where Britain goes from here, in what state of mind, and how it handles thechallenge of striking a balance between dealing with its past, grappling withits present challenges, and embracing its future, remains to be seen.

RE-RELEASING AT PUBLIC REQUEST: 2 May 1937. Cecil Beaton photographs for American Vogue the twice-divorced American heiress soon to marry the ex-King Edward VIII. Wallis Simpson wears a Schiaparelli ‘waltz dress' with a Salvador Dali red lobster down her skirt. The setting is a French chateau belonging to the American businessman who a few months later will mastermind the Windsors' honeymoon tour of Germany. But what – other than Wallis Simpson - connects all these people?
