Extending the Sunspot Area Series from Kodaikanal Solar Observatory by Bibhuti Kumar Jha et al. on Thursday 13 October Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KoSO) possesses one of world's longest and homogeneous records of sunspot observations that span more than a century (1904-2017). Interestingly, these observations (originally recorded in photographic plates/films) were taken with the same setup over this entire time period which makes this data unique and best suitable for long-term solar variability studies. A large part of this data, between 1921-2011, were digitized earlier and a catalog containing the detected sunspot parameters (e.g., area and location) was published in Mandal et al.(2017). In this article, we extend the earlier catalog by including new sets of data between 1904-1921 and 2011-2017. To this end, we digitize and calibrate these new datasets which include resolving the issue of random image orientation. We fix this by comparing the KoSO images with co-temporal data from Royal Greenwich Observatory. Following that, a semi-automated sunspot detection and automated umbra detection algorithm are implemented onto these calibrated images to detect sunspots and umbra. Additionally, during this catalog updation, we also filled data gaps in the existing KoSO sunspot catalog (1921-2011) by virtue of re-calibrating the 'rouge' plates. This updated sunspot area series covering nearly 115 years (1904-2017) are being made available to the community and will be a unique source to study the long term variability of the Sun arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.06922v1

An Image Processing approach to identify solar plages observed at 393 37 nm by Kodaikanal Solar Observatory by Sarvesh Gharat et al. on Thursday 22 September Solar Plages are bright chromospheric features observed in Ca II K photographic observations of the sun. These are regions of high magnetic field concentration thus tracer of magnetic activity of the Sun and are one of the most important features to study long-term variability of the Sun as Ca II K spectroheliograms are recorded for more than a century. . However, detection of the plages from century-long databases is a non-trivial task and need significant human resources for doing it manually. Hence, in this study, we propose an image processing algorithm that can identify solar plages from Ca II K photographic observations. The proposed study has been implemented on archival data from Kodaikanal Solar Observatory. To ensure that the algorithm works, irrespective of noise level, brightness, and other image properties, we randomly draw a sample of images from the data archive to test our algorithm. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.10631v1

In my last episode, Katrina Nilsson-Gorman shared her experience in southern India, and this week’s story from Annette Stixrud is partly based in Tamil Nadu as well. Annette spent much of her life working overseas as an educator and public health nurse. I call her Saint Annette.Annette's father was a Lutheran pastor who earned a meager salary and had six children. She went to Pacific Lutheran University, where she met her husband Neal. After they got married, she began her career as a teacher in Bellevue, WA. “They gave me children with health risks, and I decided I needed to learn more because I was scared to death the whole time something would happen to them.”After teaching children with medical needs, Annette began nursing school. Their first daughter, Lindsey, was born 44 hours after Annette graduated. “We call that planned parenthood,” Annette jokes.Annette comes from a family of missionaries, which inspired both her and her brother to pursue public health and work in developing countries. Annette and Neal became missionaries. They were sent to Tanzania to teach. I asked Annette about working outside the home for most of her life. She worked a lot as a volunteer in the mission school, but she was able to spend a lot of time with her children. After they came back to the states, they moved to Eugene, OR. For the next few years she worked with young mothers, helping them be mothers to their babies. I asked Annette if she got push-back from others, going back to work when her children were young. When they were first married, she told Neal she wanted eight children ad he responded, “Really? You’re not going to work?” His mother had been a working mom, so he has always supported Annette’s life of work and service. Then the mission board called and asked if they would go to Kodaikanal, India, where they taught at Kodaikanal International School in Tamil Nadu. They formed strong bonds at the school and had many wonderful adventures there. Now their son Corleigh, who met his wife Nandita there, is principal, and their grandson Tarun is a student.Their last mission experience was in Egypt, where Annette worked with the Coptic Orthodox church, finding programs for women. Annette has a different outlook on what it means to be a missionary. The people in the villages taught her a lot about listening. Annette shared stories about working with the Tamil repatriates in Tamil Nadu. About 30,000 Tamils were living in the hills in horrific conditions behind where they lived. Annette was appalled and could not believe how they were living. She recruited 10 girls and 10 boys to go to school. When people told her she should be educating all boys, she shut them up: “If you say one more word to me that I should have all boys, I will find all girls.”Annette has always been brave in speaking truth to power and speaking out if she sees injustice. She was one of the first people who shared the plight of the Palestinians, which is similar to the way the Tamils have been treated. “It makes me ache that people have to be subjugated to such horrible living conditions and hunger and watch their children grow up like that. It’s such a huge problem when the Israelis cannot see the harm they are doing to another group of people.”We also spoke of the parallels with Black Lives Matter. At the time the interview was conducted, federal troops had been sent into Portland to quell the demonstrations here and they were brutally oppressing the peaceful protests. I admire her huge heart, and I believe if anyone deserves canonization, it’s this Lutheran pastor’s kid who thinks nothing of standing up to the powers that be to help someone who does not have a voice.

Sholai School was established in 1989 by the British-born, Brian Jenkins, who so named it because of a "certain beauty and naturalness" inherent in the name. A Social Anthropologist from the University of Sussex, Brian Jenkins ('BJ') taught for 14 years at the J. Krishnamurti Educational Centre at Brockwood Park, UK. Inspired by J Krishnamurti (JK), BJ, believes, "we need to explore a new culture of alertness which is sustainable, emphasises self-awareness, dialogue, and right relationships among all of us, human beings". While at Brockwood Park, BJ frequently interacted with JK exploring with him how to live a life of intelligence and sensitivity and how to educate young people, such that they grow up to be mature and free of their fears and hurts. It is fact that many of the students who come to Sholai have already been conditioned by their previous schooling and social pressures. It is BJ's endeavour to help the teachers and students, all of us, to learn together in understanding the movement of conditioning along with a serious response to be free of it. In 2006 the Krishnamurti Foundation of India brought out A Flame of Learning: in which "Mr. J", (BJ) raised questions with JK concerning these issues. However, Mr. Jenkins, cautions against dependence on any ideology and insists there is no "guru worship" at Sholai School. "The cruciality of watching oneself in one's relationship with other human beings and nature, form an important aspect of our work, here", he says. Brian Jenkins's search for an ideal location took him to Sri Lanka and Nepal and 7000 kilometres across India before he converged on the present locale. "Initially there were just two huts. We constructed buildings from local stone and our own consolidated mud bricks, made on campus. At the same time we converted the land into an organic farm that grows coffee, pepper, bananas, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Today the children benefit from the excellent vegetarian food, organically grown at CLOAAT," says BJ. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/future-school-leaders/message

In this episode, Rocky, Mayur, Abhinandan and Prashant drive across Tamil Nadu. During their journey, the gang deep-dives into the culture and stories from this region while they travel across topographically wide-ranging cities with equally vivacious food culture. The drive into Tamil Nadu starts with Rocky breaking down the myth that it’s a predominantly vegetarian state. As he explains, Chennai has some of the most delicious Kadhai Quail and Nand Curry, and these dishes are a sign of how much the people from this part of the country love their meat. Meanwhile, Prashant describes a brusque ordeal with a representative of the Meenakshi temple in Madurai where, as they later realised, cameras and shooting was not allowed. Prashant also talks about how, like a good Dilliwala, he got out of the mess. Making inroads into his memories of Chennai, Abhinandan talks about one of the most satisfying breakfasts he’s ever had at Murugan Idli, a fairly medium-sized local favourite which now has branches in multiple countries. Rocky recollects the wide range of chutneys that were served at Murugan and how they could constitute a meal in itself. The team then drives to Mylai Karpagambal Mess, a small family-run eatery in Chennai’s Mylapore. As they pick through their memories, the gang talks about the authentic cuisine the owner dished out, and how he had borrowed the recipes from his mother and grandmother. The team reminisces about Mylai Karpagambal Mess as much for the man who ran it as for the food. As they drive out of Chennai, Rocky takes the listeners to the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre For Herpetology. This, as Rocky mentions, is a crocodile conservation centre which had more than 23 species of crocodile when they visited. The centre is also credited with having released more than 5,000 crocodiles and alligators back into the wild. The team then makes its way to the “fountainhead of biryani”, as described by Prashant: Dindigul. Rocky explains how Dindigul’s unique version of biryani came to be, and how it’s prepared with short-grain rice and lots and lots of spices. He also explains the difference between “kacchi” and “pakki” biryani. Heading from spicy biryani to great coffee and confectioneries, the gang drives to Puducherry, where Rocky demonstrates his “French Punjabi” style of speaking. Prashant recalls his long walks down the promenade, and why it’s the best place to have a meal in the middle of the night. Mayur remembers the French owner and French wine at Satsang Hotel, where Rocky ate unforgettable pork chops. The team then goes to Kodaikanal which, as Abhinandan describes, has a beautiful drive leading up to a small town with a small marketplace filled with restaurants and cafes. Mayur leaves our listeners with a list of the most famous things from Kodai, which includes magic mushrooms, chocolates and schools. The next stop is Ooty, with great food at the Sidewalk Cafe, and then Madurai, where they embarked on a search for Amma Mess. Rocky remembers a meal at one of the messes, of bone marrow omelette, rabbit roast, and Chicken Kalikattu. The conversation ends with everyone swapping stories on the energy of the Tamil people and their passion for politics, films, and food, and Abhinandan’s trip to his maternal hometown of Tirunelveli where he ate its famous Halwa. In this episode of Rise Up, Bengaluru!, RJ Divya speaks with Jacob Cherian about Ploggers. 'Plogging' is a Swedish phrase that became popular in 2016. It is inspired from the Swedish words 'plocka upp' and is a combination of the words - jogging and picking up litter. Plogging works very well in the wild and on beaches. For Jacob, it started at Kodaikanal where he has a small house by a forest. "Once, I saw a heap of waste and some animals were eating into it. So I started clearing it up; it has just continued and more people have joined the effort." Jacob also threw a party called 'Plogging Party' which close to 30 people joined. Now, whereever he and his friends travel to, they share the news of plogging.

Velan Mudaliar is my dear cousin with whom I spent most of my formative childhood years building blanket castles and running around trees with. During our discussion, we discuss his early life in Carrollton Texas, the monstrous emergence of his brother Senthil, his childhood literary career, and eventual descent into a life of video game addiction. During early adolescence, he and his family moved to India and he transitioned to a markedly different way of life and schooling. After two years spent at the Kodaikanal boarding school, he returned to finish his senior year of high school in the great state of New Jersey and subsequently attended Rutgers University. His time in college were some of the best years of his life and a place where he developed many close friendships, studied materials engineering, and trained as part of the ROTC progam. In his free time, he is a proud comic nerd and science fiction aficionado, and in recent years has created a fantastic entertainment blog 'Infinity Curry.'
