Reading With Your Kids Podcast

Get ready for an all star end oof the year episode of Reading with Your Kids! We had a really impressive lineup of guests, starting with 13-year-old author Orion Jean. Orion wrote a book called "Race to Kindness" about a young boy who uses kindness to inspire his community. Orion is wise beyond his years - he talked about how kindness can make a big impact, even in small conversations. It was awesome to hear how he's already making a difference through projects like donating toys, meals, and books. Next up was comedian Joe Ghetto, who wrote a new children's book called "Where's Bearry?" about his son losing a favorite stuffed animal. Joe shared how the story became a fun way for him to bond with his kids through reading. He had a great perspective on how writing for kids is a different creative process than his comedy work, but he really enjoyed the challenge. We also heard from author Rajani LaRocca about her new fantasy book "Sona and the Golden Beast." Rajani created this rich, Indian-inspired world and the story deals with some heavy themes around colonialism. But she balanced that with relatable characters and emotions that draw you in. I loved how she talked about putting her characters through tough situations to see how they'd handle it. And we met 15-year-old DeMarco Avant, who wrote a book called "Teenage Boss" to teach financial literacy to other teens. DeMarco has already accomplished so much, like taking college classes in high school. But he was refreshingly honest about still making mistakes with money sometimes.  Finally, bestselling author Kendare Blake joined us to discuss her new YA book "Warrior of Legend." This is the conclusion to her "Hero Maker" duology, which is connected to her previous "Three Dark Crowns" series. Kendare shared how she loves putting her characters through challenging situations to see how they respond. Overall, this episode was a great mix of creativity, wisdom, and inspiration from authors at all different stages of their careers. I always love hearing the stories behind the books and how the writers put their hearts into their work. Why do all presentations look and feel the same? Why does it feel like you have to leave your true self at the door and switch into ‘pitch mode'? Why isn't there more storytelling? These are the big questions our guest Ravi Rajani sought to answer, and he packed this episode with so much of what he has learned. In this episode, your host Donald Kelly and Ravi Rajani get pumped about the art of telling exciting stories in a sales environment – and the energy is contagious! Understanding “STORY” in a Sales Context S: Simplify story-selling: A simple, but powerful story can get attention, tug at emotions, and build trust. T: Tactically create your story bank: Include the right kinds of stories in your arsenal. O: Obtain delivery mastery: It's not what you say, it's how you say it. R: Ramp up your MVP story: Practice and fine-tune your story in low-stakes environments. Y: Yield long-term success: Over time, build up more stories to become second nature and conversational. Write Great Sales Stories With The ACORNS Checklist A: Attention-grabbing: Be unpredictable to interrupt your buyer's pattern of thinking. C: Contain a relatable person: A listener should be able to see themselves as your main character. O: Organically unfold: Keep story arcs simple and easy to follow. R: Reveal a villain: Stories with a “villain” have more tension, which gets your listener's attention. N: Nurture trust: The story should be a larger part of building a business relationship over time. S: Should add business value: Stories should lead right into your hook, prospect impact, and CTA (call to action).  Using Stories to Incite Emotion Bring someone into the room. Rather than narrating, “This happened, then that happened…” Include dialogue. Rajani uses highly descriptive, sensory-focused language to pull listeners in. “What is a story? Let's take it back to my guy Ralph Emerson. He once said, ‘The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.' I actually believe that the creation of a thousand relationships is in one story.” – Ravi Rajani Resources DM Ravi Rajani on LinkedIn with the word “Donald” so he knows you heard about him here! https://www.theravirajani.com/yourelevatorstory - FREE script for your Elevator Story Sponsorship Offers This episode is brought to you in part by LinkedIn. How to communicate during gut wrenching confrontation; Confrontation is without a doubt one of the hardest situations to communicate in… We've all been there…  It's absolutely gut wrenching, heart stopping, and amygdala triggering… And let's be real, most of us would do whatever it takes to avoid being in that situation… But avoiding it can only be damaging in the long run. So how can you express yourself during gut-wrenching confrontations, specifically with someone in your team? As a recovering people pleaser, I know how challenging it can be to engage during conflict and be fully transparent with whoever you're in conflict with. But I found a YouTube video a few years ago that helped me improve on this… It was a video from Simon Sinek where he answers a question on how to effectively communicate when facing confrontation, and I found his response fascinating… I've since dissected his FBI Framework and I wanted to bring that to you today! Alright my friend, push play and I'll see you on the other side! VALUABLE INSIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: How to effectively communicate in highly confrontational situations by recognizing your own feelings and analyzing the behavior that goes along with it The importance of being highly empathetic and authentic during confrontation How to focus on the intention and the delivery of your message  Why it is crucial to find the right timing and scenario when holding sensitive discussions NOTABLE QUOTES: [7:40] - “It boils down to delivering it in a way that's highly empathetic, highly authentic, and also very, very timely.” - Ravi Rajani [8:57] - “Conflict resolution starts with authentic, honest, and open communication with yourself, then with the other person.” - Ravi Rajani USEFUL RESOURCES & LINKS: Ravi Rajani's Website & Podcast: https://www.theravirajani.com/podcast Connect with Ravi on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ravirajani/ Follow Ravi on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@theravirajani Subscribe and watch the show on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3eAJQx0 ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: [FREE SCRIPT] Discover how to craft a magnetic 45-second elevator story: https://www.theravirajani.com/yourelevatorstory Hire Ravi for a keynote or storyselling workshop for your sales team: https://www.theravirajani.com/speaking Learn more about Ravi's Storyselling Bootcamp: https://www.theravirajani.com/thestorysellingbootcamp

Does storytelling work in sales? If not, why? If yes how do you use it effectively? Our guest today is Ravi Rajani, Founder at Ravi Rajani Consulting & Host of The Influential Communicator Podcast. Ravi's exportise is in generating sales through the use of storytelling.Ravi is a sales and communication expert who helps B2B sales teams ditch the pitch and become better communicators so they can get their solution in the hands of those who need it the most. His journey to this career began in 1997, when his family took a trip to Tanzania and he first picked up a camcorder and began narrating their safari in his best David Attenborough voice. From that moment on, he was hooked on performing and feeling invincible on stage. Despite not having the grades for a career in medicine or law, Ravi excelled in the world of theatre as a teenager. After business school in London, Ravi had a successful career on the trading floor, but eventually felt drained and out of alignment. In August 2016, he decided to press eject and went on a journey to remove his mask and reclaim his story. Through a variety of experiences, including TV, speaking, coaching, and building sales teams in the world of early stage startups, Ravi realized that success and failure in sales is dependent on one's ability to communicate their value, story, and solution in a memorable way.Ravi now helps others capture their customer's attention, build trust, and sell more with story. He currently lives just outside of London with his wife Sophie, daughter Zara, and dog Nellie. We regularly talk about selling the way people want to buy.  In that training we highlight 4 distinctly different buyer profiles. Sharing in the excitement of our students' success is such a privilege for our team at the Speaker Lab! Our Director of Student Success, Maryalice Goldsmith, is taking the mic for our Student Highlight series so you can hear directly from our students about their experiences and what they want you to know about growing your speaking business. He credits (or blames!) his mom for directing him to a career on the stage after she made him attend dance lessons with his sister at age 8. While it wasn't his favorite pastime, he learned the art of stage presence at a very young age, and the rest is history! Working as a corporate banker, Ravi spent years leading and building sales teams in early-stage start-ups to build what he would describe as his “portfolio career.” In September 2020 he quit his full-time job and started his own speaking business. Understanding the risks, challenges, and rewards of taking this leap excited Ravi, and his unique intuition that this was his time helped pave the way. During their conversation Ravi talks about investing in himself, how he found The Speaker Lab, and how he's built relationships through building his business. Storytelling is his passion and Ravi shares his strategy of repositioning his offerings and redefining his niche to find success. His journey is unique, engaging, and will keep you on the end of your seat! Also, guess what? Ravi is joining The Speaker Lab to lead his very own Virtual VIP Cohort!
